RESUMEN

The aim of the study was to compare the efficacy and tolerability of flutrimazole 1% powder vs. bifonazole 1% powder in treating tinea pedis. A multicentre, double blind, randomized, parallel and comparative study was conducted. Two hundred and twenty-two patients with clinically and mycologically confirmed tinea pedis were randomized to flutrimazole (n = 136) or bifonazole (n = 138) 1% powder applied twice daily for 4 weeks. The corresponding clinical cure rates were assessed at 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, and the global (clinical and mycological) cure rates were determined at the fourth week. Clinical cure rates were 83.5 and 82.4% for flutrimazole and bifonazole, respectively (95% CI: -0.0806 to 0.1009). Global cure rates were observed in 65.3 and 70.1% of patients treated with flutrimazole and bifonazole, respectively (95% CI: -0.0828 to 0.1779). Three non serious adverse events at the application site--itching (one patient per group) and dishydrotic eczema (one patient treated with flutrimazole)--were recorded during the study. These results support that flutrimazol 1% powder applied twice daily for a duration of 4 weeks is highly effective in the treatment of tinea pedis, showing a similar therapeutic profile with that of bifonazole 1% powder.

RESUMEN

We describe the clinicopathological features of multiple hamartoma and neoplasia syndrome (Cowden's syndrome) in a 58 year-old man and in a 56 year-old woman. The typical mucocutaneous lesions of this disorder were present in both cases. Visceral hamartomas involving thyroid and gastrointestinal system (polyposis) were present in both patients. Dermal or submucous fibromas are proposed as an additional diagnostic criterium of Cowden's syndrome. Associated abnormalities and visceral involvement in multiple hamartoma syndrome are reviewed.

RESUMEN

A 3-year-old boy presented two patches of light, bright, smooth, uncombable hair that were morphologically different from the rest of the hairs. Examination under scanning electron microscopy showed the morphologic characteristics of pili canaliculi and trianguli. Clinical and ultrastructural features seemed to correspond with a previously undescribed localized form of pili canaliculi et trianguli. Differential diagnosis is discussed.

RESUMEN

Prurigo gravidarum is an infrequent dermatologic condition in pregnant patients that has been found to be associated with an increased incidence of perinatal and obstetric complications. We present ten cases of this finding and review the pathogenesis, therapy, and complications of prurigo gravidarum. The recognition of this entity by dermatologists, obstetricians, and general practitioners should prompt referral of these patients for high-risk obstetric care.

RESUMEN

Excessive, pseudotumoral granulation tissue proliferations appeared in three patients receiving isotretinoin for nodulocystic acne. A review of the literature disclosed few reports of this unusual adverse reaction. Two clinical patterns have been reported; one in a periungual location and the other occurring in the sites of acne lesions during isotretinoin therapy. Loose edematous connective tissue with small vessels and chronic inflammatory infiltrate were the histologic findings in all three cases.

RESUMEN

The efficacy of treatment with doxycycline hyclate was studied in 50 patients (25 men and 25 women) with urethritis or cervicitis, or both, caused by Chlamydia trachomatis. Microbiological diagnosis was carried out by means of a micro-immunofluorescent technique. The pathogen was eradicated in the specimens from the urethra and endo-cervix from 86% of the patients after treatment with 200 mg/day doxycycline for up to 24 days. Clinical symptoms disappeared in 76% of the patients, and the remaining patients showed improvement. A possible adverse effect (mild gastric discomfort) was reported by one patient, but it did not prevent his completing the treatment course. The results of the study support previously published findings and indicate that doxycycline may be a treatment of choice for patients with lower genital tract infections caused by C trachomatis.

Authors report a new case of cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita. This disease has been preferably described by dermatologists and few issues in the pediatrics literature have been published. This is a rare illness recognizable at birth which must be knowed by pediatricians to establish the diagnosis and prognosis in the beginning. A new case with typical features is presented being of localized distribution and having as associated abnormalities. Hemiatrophy, enlarged inferior extremity without Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome and physical growth retardation.
