RESUMEN

The general activity of the antitryptic system of the blood was studied in 60 practically healthy persons and in 65 patients with active tuberculosis. A group of tobacco smokers (5 years, 6-10 years) was singled out. It was established that tobacco smoking and pulmonary tuberculosis was accompanied by activation of the antitryptic system which should be considered as a peculiar defensive reaction of the body to increase of the proteolytic activity of enzymes in the lungs. In persons that have been smoking from 6 to 10 years there was a reduction of the general antitryptic activity which can further the development of dystrophic changes in the pulmonary parenchyma and produce an unfavourable effect on the course of specific inflammation.

RESUMEN

Production, heterogeneity and functional activity of hemoglobin were studied in 60 practically healthy young smokers depending on the length of smoking. Those smoking under 5 years showed an increase of oxygen capacitance of the blood which is a response reaction to hypoxia; those smoking for 6-10 years showed changes of these values that may be interpreted as an adaptation reaction to chronic hypoxia. The functional activity of hemoglobin was reduced.

RESUMEN

Total circulating platelet count and thrombocytogram were examined in 60 tobacco smokers and in 30 nonsmoking normal subjects aged 23-32. The smokers were divided into two subgroups, 30 subjects in each: Group 1 included those with a history of smoking under 5 years and Group 2 those smoking for 5 years and Group 2 those smoking for 6-10 years. The platelet count was found increased in Group 1 smokers at the expense of old, atypical, and involutional forms. In Group 2 smokers the total platelet count and the counts of their differentiation forms were reduced. This evidences the effect of tobacco smoking on circulating platelets, this effect depending on the length of tobacco smoke inhalation.
