RESUMEN

Microbial contamination can occur on the surfaces of blow-molded bottles, necessitating the development and application of effective anti-microbial treatments to mitigate the hazards associated with microbial growth. In this study, new methods of incorporating anti-microbial particles into linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) extrusion blow-molded bottles were developed. The anti-microbial particles were thermally embossed on the external surface of the bottle through two particle deposition approaches (spray and powder) over the mold cavity. The produced bottles were studied for their thermal, mechanical, gas barrier, and anti-microbial properties. Both deposition approaches indicated a significant enhancement in anti-microbial activity, as well as barrier properties, while maintaining thermal and mechanical performance. Considering both the effect of anti-microbial agents and variations in tensile bar weight and thickness, the statistical analysis of the mechanical properties showed that applying the anti-microbial agents had no significant influence on the tensile properties of the blow-molded bottles. The external fixation of the particles over the surface of the bottles would result in optimum anti-microbial activity, making it a cost-effective solution compared to conventional compounding processing.

RESUMEN

Suprasellar meningiomas make a relevant differential when it comes to sellar/suprasellar masses. The most common pathology in this location is pituitary adenomas. It is imperative to differentiate the two entities based on imaging as the clinical picture, and sometimes the biochemical profile can show significant overlap. It is also essential for the neurosurgeons to have a preoperative diagnosis as the behavior of both tumors is different. This piece will give a pictorial review of the imaging features of suprasellar meningiomas, in patients who presented to us with sellar/suprasellar masses. The aim is to help the radiologists as well as fellow clinicians to diagnose this entity with confidence based on imaging.

RESUMEN

CNS tuberculosis has a broad spectrum of disease patterns and a high risk of complications and mortality. We present a case of a 36-year-old man who was diagnosed with neurotuberculosis with intracranial and spinal tuberculomas, meningitis, and spondylodiscitis. The patient was a known case of sarcoidosis and was being managed on corticosteroids. His presenting complaints were headache, low-grade fever, severe backache, lower limb weakness, and one episode of altered sensorium. The initial diagnosis was based on imaging findings, which were confirmed with positive cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) culture for Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Imaging and clinicopathological correlation enables early diagnosis and treatment and prevents permanent neurological sequelae.

RESUMEN

Cantharidin is a highly potent toxin produced by insects belonging to the order Coleoptera and family Meloidae. The insecticidal activity of cantharidin against different orders of insects has been well documented. Although it is highly effective, its extraction and synthesis is very tedious. Consequently, much work is underway to synthesize the bioactive analogs of norcantharidin and study their relative structures. In this study, we investigate the acute and chronic toxicological effects of cantharidin and endothall, an analog of norcantharidin, using an age-stage-based two-sex life table methodology. Results reveal the acute toxicity of these compounds to Spodoptera litura Fabricius (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), with the LC50 of cantharidin being 2.10 and endothall being 3.72 ppm, after 72 h posttreatment. Although both the compounds negatively affected the intrinsic rate of population increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), net reproduction rate (R0), mean generation time (T), doubling time (DT), relative fitness (Rf), biotic potential, and longevity, cantharidin was slightly more effective. Among the reproductive parameters, fecundity was severely affected by cantharidin, which reduced offspring to 42 compared to 528 per female in the control cohort. Both cantharidin and endothall caused similar physiological changes such as weight reduction, wing malformation, and pupal deformities. These findings demonstrate that both cantharidin and endothall are highly toxic to S. litura, particularly in their chronic effects on population parameters. This will help us to understand the biological and ecological interactions in agricultural cropping systems and how their application will modify insect herbivory.

RESUMEN

A 74 years male with hematuria, mass on digital rectal examination, and elevated prostate specific antigen levels (26 ng/ml) underwent prostate MRI. Imaging demonstrated a prostate mass which contained multiple cystic and solid areas. Subsequent biopsy revealed ductal prostate adenocarcinoma with a Gleason grade of 5 + 4 (9). MRI suggested rectal wall invasion, which was confirmed on rectal biopsy. The patient underwent external beam radiotherapy and concomitant hormonal therapy. A follow-up MRI revealed marked response of the tumour to therapy. Based on these findings, a definitive prostatectomy and pelvic exoneration was performed, with excellent surgical result.
