OBJECTIVE: This cross-sectional study evaluated the bone thickness on mini-implants insertion site, the factors that influence the digital planning of MARPE appliance (miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expansion), and its different designs. METHODS: A total of 135 plannings were assessed regarding the size of the expander screw used, the positioning and the type of the mini-implant rings, and their location in relation to the teeth. Bone thickness measurements were assessed in the region of the mini-implants' trajectory. Differences between the sexes was verified using the ANOVA test (5% significance). RESULTS: 73 cases were planned with 4 mini-implants and 62 cases, with 6 mini-implants. In 90% of cases, teeth #16 and #26 were used as supports, and the most used expander screw was 13mm (64.1% of cases). The anterior mini-implants of conventional MARPE showed more pronounced insertion in bone in males (5.9 ± 2mm; p= 0.025). The extra mini-implants (anterior region) were inserted with greater bone thickness in males (11.1 ± 2.3mm) compared to females (9.9 ± 1.8mm; p=0.041). A greater bone thickness was observed in males (10.1 ± 2.1 mm) when using mini-implants in the paramedian region. CONCLUSION: Additional rings allow more pronounced bone insertion. Male patients had greater bone thickness, which may be related to greater difficulty in opening the sutures. The alveolar process region seems to be a satisfactory site for mini-implants to those patients with reduced bone thickness in the paramedian posterior region. MARPE appliance must be customized for each patient, due to bone thickness and anatomical variations.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of an adhesive loaded with 0.2 % copper (Cu) and 5 % zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles (Nps) on its adhesive properties and enzymatic activity at the hybrid layer ex vivo in a randomized clinical model. METHODS: Fifteen patients participated in this study, and a total of 30 third molars were used. Occlusal cavities (4 × 4 × 2 mm) were made in each tooth, and randomly divided into 2 groups: (i) Experimental group: commercial adhesive loaded with 0.2wt % CuNps and 5wt % ZnONps; and (ii) Control Group: non-loaded commercial adhesive. Teeth were restored with resin composite. Thirty days later, extractions were performed. Extracted teeth were longitudinally sectioned. Nps in powder were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. Microtensile bond strength (µTBS), degree of conversion (DC), and nanoleakeage (NL) tests were executed. In situ zymography (Zym) was performed to evaluate the gelatinolytic activity at the hybrid layer. Student's t-test (α = 0.05) was applied for all tests. RESULTS: µTBS and DC did not show significant differences (p > 0.05) between both groups. However, NL and gelatinolytic activity at the hybrid layer showed significant values (p < 0.05) for experimental group in comparison with control group. CONCLUSION: The addition of 0.2 % CuNps and 5 % ZnONps to a universal adhesive decreases NL and gelatinolytic activity at the hybrid layer, without jeopardizing its adhesive properties. SIGNIFICANCE: This randomized clinical trial with ex vivo analysis demonstrate that a commercial adhesive modified with 0.2wt % Cu and 5wt % ZnO Nps that does not affect its adhesive properties, reducing gelatinolytic activity and nanoleakage at the hybrid layer, which should contribute to an improvement of long term bonding-dentine clinical performance.

In this article, we use the career development trajectories of neurologists who have become education deans in student affairs and curriculum to offer advice to aspiring clinician educators of all levels and backgrounds. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the effect of hookah and cigarettes on the oral mucosa of smokers through the use of exfoliative cytology. STUDY DESIGN: Smear samples were collected by exfoliative cytology from the tongue of 33 hookah smokers, 22 cigarette smokers, and 30 non-smokers. The selected analyses include micronuclei (MN), metanuclear anomalies, epithelial maturation, and cytomorphology (nuclear area [NA], cytoplasmic area [CA], and NA/CA ratio). RESULTS: The largest differences observed for MN and metanuclear anomalies were between cigarette smokers and the control group (notably 1 MN P = .04; total cells with MN P = .039; total MN P = .042; karyorrhexis and binucleation, P = .0001). The hookah group, compared with the control group, showed the greatest differences for karyolysis (P = .0023), binucleation (P = .0003), and broken egg (P = .008). Significant differences were found between the smokers and the control groups regarding changes in the superficial cell without nucleus, perinuclear halo, vacuolization, color change, mucus, and keratohyalin granules. There was a significant increase in the NA and NA/CA ratio in the smoker groups. CONCLUSION: This study showed that a combined analysis of exfoliative cytology associated with other diagnostic methods is a useful tool for studying oral carcinogenesis. Hookah and cigarettes showed similar effects in terms of displaying substantial cytogenetic and cytotoxic damage.

In myrmecophilous organisms, which live in symbiosis with ants, cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) play a pivotal role in interspecific communication and defense against chemical-oriented predators. Although these interactions form complex information webs, little is known about the influence of biotic environmental factors on the CHC profiles of myrmecophiles. Here, we analyzed the effect of different host plants and tending ants on the larval CHC profile of Synargis calyce (Lepidoptera: Riodinidae), a polyphagous species with facultative myrmecophily. Groups of caterpillars were fed individually with three host plant species (without tending ants), and with two tending ant species. Through gas chromatography analysis, we compared the cuticular profiles of treatments and found a high similarity between plants and caterpillars (65-82%), but a low similarity between caterpillars and their tending ants (30 - 25%). Cluster analysis showed that caterpillars, ants, and plants form distinct groups, indicating that S. calyce caterpillars have their own chemical profile. These results are similar to those observed for Lycaenidae caterpillars indicating that there is functional convergence in the chemical strategies used by myrmecophilous caterpillar species with similar ecology. Also, the results suggest that the cuticular compounds of S. calyce are primarily influenced by their host plants rather than their tending ants. Thus, we propose that these caterpillars present a trade-off between camouflage and directly informing their presence to ants, maintaining their unique chemical profile, though slightly affected by biotic environmental factors.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of an educational program leveraging technology-enhanced learning and retrieval practice to teach trainees how to correctly identify interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs). METHODS: This was a bi-institutional prospective randomized controlled educational trial involving junior neurology residents. The intervention consisted of three video tutorials focused on the six IFCN criteria for IED identification and rating 500 candidate IEDs with instant feedback either on a web browser (intervention 1) or an iOS app (intervention 2). The control group underwent no educational intervention ("inactive control"). All residents completed a survey and a test at the onset and offset of the study. Performance metrics were calculated for each participant. RESULTS: Twenty-one residents completed the study: control (n = 8); intervention 1 (n = 6); intervention 2 (n = 7). All but two had no prior EEG experience. Intervention 1 residents improved from baseline (mean) in multiple metrics including AUC (.74; .85; p < .05), sensitivity (.53; .75; p < .05), and level of confidence (LOC) in identifying IEDs/committing patients to therapy (1.33; 2.33; p < .05). Intervention 2 residents improved in multiple metrics including AUC (.81; .86; p < .05) and LOC in identifying IEDs (2.00; 3.14; p < .05) and spike-wave discharges (2.00; 3.14; p < .05). Controls had no significant improvements in any measure. SIGNIFICANCE: This program led to significant subjective and objective improvements in IED identification. Rating candidate IEDs with instant feedback on a web browser (intervention 1) generated greater objective improvement in comparison to rating candidate IEDs on an iOS app (intervention 2). This program can complement trainee education concerning IED identification.

OBJECTIVE: We created a framework to assess the competency-based EEG curriculum, outlined by the International League Against Epilepsy (ILAE) through a video-based online educational resource ("Roadmap to EEGs") and assessed its effectiveness and feasibility in improving trainees' knowledge. METHODS: Ten video-based e-learning modules addressed seven key topics in EEG and epileptology (normal EEG, normal variants, EEG artifacts, interictal epileptiform discharges (IED), focal seizures, idiopathic generalized epilepsy (IGE), and developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEE)). We posted the educational videos on YouTube for free access. Pre- and post-tests, each comprising 20 multiple-choice questions, were distributed to institution leadership and advertised on social media platforms to reach a global audience. The tests were administered online to assess the participants' knowledge. Pre- and post-test questions showed different EEG samples to avoid memorization and immediate recall. After completing the post-test, participants were asked to respond to 7 additional questions assessing their confidence levels and recommendations for improvement. RESULTS: A total of 52 complete and matched pre- and post-test responses were collected. The probability of a correct response was 73% before teaching (95% CI: 70%-77%) and 81% after teaching (95% CI: 78%-84%). The odds of a correct response increased significantly by 59% (95% CI: 28%-98%, p < .001). For participants having >4 weeks of EEG training, the probability of a correct response was 76% (95% CI: .72-.79) and 81% after teaching (95% CI: .78-.84). The odds of answering correctly increased by 44% (95% CI: 15%-80%, p = .001). Participants felt completely confident in independently interpreting and identifying EEG findings after completing the teaching modules (17.1% before vs. 37.8% after, p-value < .0001). 86.5% of participants expressed a high likelihood of recommending the module to other trainees. SIGNIFICANCE: The video-based online educational resource allows participants to acquire foundational knowledge in EEG/epilepsy, and participants to review previously learned EEG/epilepsy information.

Sperm competition and male mating rate are two non-mutually exclusive key evolutionary pressures selecting for larger testes within and across animal taxa. A few studies have tried to test the role of mating rate in the absence of sperm competition. Under the mating rate hypothesis, particular phenotypes of a given population that are expected to gain more mates (e.g., more ornamented males) are expected to make higher investments in testes size (a proxy for sperm production). We test this prediction in Polistes simillimus, a neotropical paper wasp in which females are single mated (no sperm competition) and males can mate with multiple partners. Testes size was predicted by body size (positive association), sexual ornamentation (negative association), and their interaction (among small males, testes size was positively related to ornamentation, but the opposite pattern was observed among large males). We propose that small-bodied well-ornamented males may face the highest risk of sperm depletion. Small-bodied males make relatively higher investment in testes size when highly ornamented. This strategy might be less profitable to large males, as they have overall larger testes. Our results provide strong evidence for the mating rate hypothesis.

Workers of social hymenopterans (ants, bees and wasps) display specific tasks depending on whether they are younger or older. The relative importance of behavior and age in modulating immune function has seldom been addressed. We compared the strength of encapsulation-melanization immune response (hereafter melanotic encapsulation) in paper wasps displaying age polyethism or experimentally prevented from behavioral specialization. Foragers of Polybia paulista had higher melanotic encapsulation than guards, regardless of their age. Nevertheless, melanotic encapsulation decreased with age when wasps were prevented from behavioral specialization. Thus, in this species, worker melanotic encapsulation seems more sensitive to task than age. Foraging is considered one of the riskier behaviors in terms of pathogen exposure, so upregulating melanotic encapsulation in foragers can possibly improve both individual and colony-level resistance against infections.

Background: Evaluate the effects of incorporating silica-coated silver nanoparticles (Ag@SiO2 NPs) into odontological clinic resin materials. Material and Methods: Silver nanoparticles coated with silicon dioxide were added to the experimental resin matrix at 1, 3, and 5wt%. Degree of conversion (DC), optical properties (total transmittance and color change), and microstructural analysis were evaluated. Materials were tested for silver ion release, cytotoxicity in dental pulp fibroblasts, Streptococcus mutans biofilm growth by Colony-Forming Unit (CFU) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Results: Groups had a similar DC, despite significant differences observed in transmittance and color change analysis for all groups with NPs. Silver ion release values were below the detection limit after 72h for all groups, and NPs incorporation did not show a statistical difference from the control on pulp fibroblasts assay. After 72h, the CFU count was significantly reduced by 74% from 3wt% of Ag@SiO2NPs. CLSM evaluation on S. mutans colonies showed a dose-dependent decrease in the emitted fluorescence. Conclusions: The application of Ag@SiO2 NPs in a resinous matrix, demonstrates a significant reduction of S. mutans CFU in oral biofilm, at concentrations from 3wt%, without an increase in cytotoxicity. The reduced transmittance values did not affect the DC, although a significant color change was perceived in all concentrations. OBJECTIVE: this study evaluated dentin microtensile bond strength (µTBS) and failure modes (at 24 h and one year), bonding interface regarding hybridization, surface morphology regarding demineralization, in situ metalloproteinase (MMP) activity, and antibacterial effect of three dentin etchants compared to 35% phosphoric acid (PA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Adper Single Bond 2 adhesive (3 M Oral Care) was applied on moist dentin etched with PA (control) or on air-dried dentin etched with 3% aluminum nitrate + 2% oxalic acid (AN), 6.8% ferric oxalate + 10% citric acid (FO), or 10% citric acid (CA). The µTBS test used 40 human teeth (n = 10). Failure modes and surface morphology were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (n = 3), while bonding interface morphology and MMP activity were evaluated by laser scanning confocal microscopy (n = 3). Antibacterial activity was evaluated against S. Mutans biofilm by means of viable cells count (CFU/mL). RESULTS: PA presented the highest bond strengths regardless of aging time. PA, AN, and CA showed stable bond strengths after one year of storage. Adhesive and mixed failures were predominant in all groups. Thin hybrid layers with short resin tags were observed for the experimental etchants. The AN-based etchant was able to inhibit MMP activity. All tested etchants presented antibacterial activity against S. Mutans biofilm. SIGNIFICANCE: This study suggests different dentin etchants capable of inhibiting MMP activity while also acting as cavity disinfectants.

Ants patrol foliage and exert a strong selective pressure on herbivorous insects, being their primary predators. As ants are chemically oriented, some organisms that interact with them (myrmecophiles) use chemical strategies mediated by their cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) to deal with ants. Thus, a better understanding of the ecology and evolution of the mutualistic interactions between myrmecophiles and ants depends on the accurate recognition of these chemical strategies. Few studies have examined whether treehoppers may use an additional strategy called chemical camouflage to reduce ant aggression, and none considered highly polyphagous pest insects. We analyzed whether the chemical similarity of the CHC profiles of three host plants from three plant families (Fabaceae, Malvaceae, and Moraceae) and the facultative myrmecophilous honeydew-producing treehopper Aetalion reticulatum (Hemiptera: Aetalionidae), a pest of citrus plants, may play a role as a proximate mechanism serving as a protection against ant attacks on plants. We found a high similarity (>80%) between the CHCs of the treehoppers and two of their host plants. The treehoppers acquire CHCs through their diet, and the chemical similarity varies according to host plant. Chemical camouflage on host plants plays a role in the interaction of treehoppers with their ant mutualistic partners.

OBJECTIVE: We published a list of "must-know" routine EEG (rEEG) findings for trainees based on expert opinion. Here, we studied the accuracy and inter-rater agreement (IRA) of these "must-know" rEEG findings among international experts. METHODS: A previously validated online rEEG examination was disseminated to EEG experts. It consisted of a survey and 30 multiple-choice questions predicated on the previously published "must-know" rEEG findings divided into four domains: normal, abnormal, normal variants, and artifacts. Questions contained de-identified 10-20-s epochs of EEG that were considered unequivocal examples by five EEG experts. RESULTS: The examination was completed by 258 international EEG experts. Overall mean accuracy and IRA (AC1) were 81% and substantial (0.632), respectively. The domain-specific mean accuracies and IRA were: 76%, moderate (0.558) (normal); 78%, moderate (0.575) (abnormal); 85%, substantial (0.678) (normal variants); 85%, substantial (0.740) (artifacts). Academic experts had a higher accuracy than private practice experts (82% vs. 77%; p = .035). Country-specific overall mean accuracies and IRA were: 92%, almost perfect (0.836) (U.S.); 86%, substantial (0.762) (Brazil); 79%, substantial (0.646) (Italy); and 72%, moderate (0.496) (India). In conclusion, collective expert accuracy and IRA of "must-know" rEEG findings are suboptimal and heterogeneous. SIGNIFICANCE: We recommend the development and implementation of pragmatic, accessible, country-specific ways to measure and improve the expert accuracy and IRA.

In recent years, alternative pulpal therapies targeting dentinogenesis signaling pathways using different peptides have been investigated. The aim of this study was to verify the effectiveness of poly(aspartic acid), pAsp, in dentin regeneration using an animal model. METHODS: Mechanical pulp exposure was performed in the upper molars of 56 Wistar rats, randomly divided as follows (n = 14): control (no treatment); MTA group-pulp capping with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA Angelus); pAsp group-application of 20 µL of pAsp solution (25 mg·mL-1); MTA+pAsp group-application of MTA mixed with pAsp (5:1 by mass). Animals were euthanized after 7 or 21 days. Histological sections were submitted to hematoxylin-eosin and Brown and Brenn staining and immunohistochemical analysis for osteopontin (OPN) and dentin matrix protein 1 (DMP 1). RESULTS: At 7 days, an acute inflammatory infiltrate and the presence of disorganized mineralized tissue were observed in all groups. At 21 days, the quality and thickness of the reparative dentin in treated groups were superior to the control, and bacterial contamination was observed in two MTA-pAsp specimens. While all treated groups showed intense immunostaining for OPN at 21 days, only the pAsp group expressed DMP 1, indicating the presence of fully differentiated odontoblast-like cells. CONCLUSION: Poly(aspartic) acid promoted dentin regeneration in rat molars in the absence of an additional calcium source and may be an alternative to MTA as a pulp-capping agent.

Although electroencephalography (EEG) serves a critical role in the evaluation and management of seizure disorders, it is commonly misinterpreted, resulting in avoidable medical, social, and financial burdens to patients and health care systems. Overinterpretation of sharply contoured transient waveforms as being representative of interictal epileptiform abnormalities lies at the core of this problem. However, the magnitude of these errors is amplified by the high prevalence of paroxysmal events exhibited in clinical practice that compel investigation with EEG. Neurology training programs, which vary considerably both in the degree of exposure to EEG and the composition of EEG didactics, have not effectively addressed this widespread issue. Implementation of competency-based curricula in lieu of traditional educational approaches may enhance proficiency in EEG interpretation amongst general neurologists in the absence of formal subspecialty training. Efforts in this regard have led to the development of a systematic, high-fidelity approach to the interpretation of epileptiform discharges that is readily employable across medical centers. Additionally, machine learning techniques hold promise for accelerating accurate and reliable EEG interpretation, particularly in settings where subspecialty interpretive EEG services are not readily available. This review highlights common diagnostic errors in EEG interpretation, limitations in current educational paradigms, and initiatives aimed at resolving these challenges.

Chemical communication plays a major role in regulating social dynamics in social insect colonies. The most studied class of chemical compounds are the cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs), compounds with high molecular weight that cover the insect body. CHCs are used in nestmate recognition and to signal reproductive status. Brood, in the form of larvae and eggs, is known to participate in chemical communication and social dynamics by performing hunger behaviour and inducing interaction with adults and conferring nest and maternity identity. CHCs of adults and egg surface compounds are similar in composition in social insect species. The main source of egg compounds is proposed to be Dufour's gland, an accessory reproductive gland found in several Hymenoptera females. There is still a lack of information about the level of similarity among CHCs, compounds of egg surface and Dufour's gland for several wasp species, which could provide correlational evidence about the origins of egg-marking compounds. Thus, we investigated whether egg surface compounds were more similar to CHCs or Dufour's gland secretions in two Neotropical primitively eusocial wasp species, Polistes versicolor (Olivier) and Mischocyttarus metathoracicus (de Saussure, 1854). As expected, there was a higher chemical similarity between eggs and Dufour's gland secretions in both studied species, supporting the hypothesis that this gland is the source of chemical compounds found over the eggs in these two primitively eusocial species.
