RESUMEN

Systemic osteosclerotic lesions are frequently caused by multiple bone metastases or systemic metabolic disorders. However, bone metastasis from gastric cancer is rare. Herein, we describe such a case, with radiographic and clinical findings resembling Paget's disease. The patient was an 80-year-old Japanese woman with a history of early gastric cancer, treated by partial gastrectomy 2 years prior. The patient sought medical care for chronic low back pain. On imaging, systemic sclerotic lesions were observed throughout the spine and pelvis, with an increase in bone mineral density from 0.86 g/cm3 (2 years prior) to 1.38g/cm3 (current visit) in the lumbar spine. Elevated serum levels of osteoblastic and osteolytic markers were identified. A bone biopsy was used to confirm the diagnosis of metastatic gastric cancer. The patient was treated with TS-1 and denosumab, with normalization of abnormal metabolic markers and alleviation of the back pain. Bone metastasis is reported in only 10% of cases of gastric cancer and, thus, is relatively rare. Therefore, our case of gastric cancer recurrence presenting with mixed osteoblastic and osteolytic bone lesions similar to Paget's disease is relevant to the report. Bone biopsy is necessary for an accurate diagnosis.

Sum frequency mixing has been demonstrated below 150 nm in KBeBO3F2 by using the fundamental with its fourth harmonic of a 6 kHz Ti: sapphire laser system. The wavelength of 149.8 nm is the shortest ever obtained to our knowledge by phase matching in nonlinear crystals. The output powers were 3.6 µW at 149.8 nm and 110 µW at 154.0 nm, respectively. The phase matching angles measured from 149.8 to 158.1 nm are larger by 3-4 degrees than those expected from the existing Sellmeier equation. The measured transmission spectra of KBeBO3F2 crystals support the generation of coherent radiation below 150 nm.

RESUMEN

The characteristics of an APLF80+3Ce scintillator are presented. Its sufficiently fast decay profile, low afterglow, and an improved light output compared to the recently developed APLF80+3Pr, were experimentally demonstrated. This scintillator material holds promise for applications in neutron imaging diagnostics at the energy regions of 0.27 MeV of DD fusion down-scattered neutron peak at the world's largest inertial confinement fusion facilities such as the National Ignition Facility and the Laser Mégajoule.

For pump and probe experiments in x-ray free-electron laser (XFEL) facilities, accurate timing synchronization between short-wavelength femtosecond pulses from XFELs and short optical pulses from other light sources is required. For this purpose, the response time of a hydrothermal-method-grown ZnO is improved by over one order of magnitude via intentional iron ion doping. The fluorescence rise- and decay-time constants are measured to be less than 10 and 100 ps, respectively. Owing to its intense fluorescence even for single pulse XFEL excitation, the timing jitter of the soft x-ray pulse and timing electronics are evaluated to be less than 70 ps.

RESUMEN

Experimental results are presented on the neutron scintillating properties of a custom-designed Pr3+ (praseodymium)-doped lithium (Li) glass. Luminescence was observed at 278 nm wavelength, originating from the 5d-4f transition. Time-resolved measurements yielded about 20 ns decay times for ultraviolet and x-ray excitation while much faster decay times of about 6 ns were observed for alpha particle and neutron excitation. Actual time-of-flight data in laser fusion experiments at the GEKKO XII facility of the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University reveal that it can clearly discriminate fusion neutrons from the much stronger x-rays signals. This material can promise improved accuracy in future scattered neutron diagnostics.

RESUMEN

Thermionic emission (TE)-type X-ray generators have been exclusively used in medicine, but there are many difficulties in making these X-ray sources compact. A field emission (FE)-type X-ray generator using carbon nanotubes is a newly-developed compact system that can be as small as several cm in length. Considering the compactness of the equipment, the FE-type X-ray generator may become a useful tool for endoscopic, intracavitary or intraoperative radiotherapy in the future. The aim of this study was to investigate the biological effects of X-rays generated by the FE-type X-ray source in comparison with those of conventional TE-type X-rays. Mouse thymic lymphoma 3SB cells were irradiated by an FE-type X-ray generator developed by our group and a conventional TE-type X-ray source under identical conditions. DNA damage after radiation was detected by foci formation of phospho-H2AX (gamma-H2AX). Effect on the cell cycle was analyzed by flow cytometry. Activation of the DNA damage checkpoint was analyzed by immunoblotting. Induction of apoptosis was studied using the TUNEL assay. In terms of induction of DNA damage (DNA double-strand breaks), activation of cell cycle checkpoints (p53 stabilization, p21 induction, Chk1 and Chk2 phosphorylations), and induction of apoptotic cell death, FE-type X-rays were as effective as TE-type X-rays, and FE-type X-rays appeared to be applicable to radiation therapy.
