RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of transvaginal approach combined intracavitary and interstitial brachytherapy (IC/IS BT) assisted by transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) for treatment of locally advanced cervical cancer (LACC). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 30 patients of LACC treated with external beam radiotherapy and IC/IS BT via transvaginal approach assisted by transrectal ultrasound were observed retrospectively. The 2-year local control (LC), progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival (OS) were analyzed using the Kaplan-Meier method. Late adverse events were also evaluated to assess the safety of IC/IS BT. RESULTS: The median follow-up period was 22 months. The 2-year LC, PFS, and OS were 90%, 61%, and 82%, respectively. We observed no critical complications related to the IC/IS BT technique. Late adverse events of grade 3 or more included one case of grade 4 colon perforation. CONCLUSION: Our patient series demonstrated that radiotherapy combined with transvaginal approach, TRUS-assisted IC/IS BT achieves favorable local control and safety for LACC.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: We investigated acute adverse events in patients with brain metastases (BMs) of anaplastic lymphoma kinase-rearranged (ALKr) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with both cranial radiotherapy and tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) of ALK. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Acute AEs were retrospectively investigated in patients with BMs of ALKr-NSCLC who received both whole-brain radiotherapy (WBRT) and ALK-TKI. For comparison, they were also assessed in patients with epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-mutated NSCLC and wild-type with neither ALK rearrangement nor EGFR mutation treated with WBRT. RESULTS: Two ALKr cases were consequently eligible. Grade 3 otitis media unexpectedly occurred in both cases, while there was one case out of 11 and one case out of 18 of grade 2 otitis media among the EGFR-mutated cases and wild-type cases (p=0.013), respectively. CONCLUSION: Concurrent treatment with WBRT and ALK-TKI may be associated with acute severe ear toxicity in patients with BMs of ALKr-NSCLC.

RESUMEN

Hepatocellular adenoma (HCA) is a benign liver neoplasm composed of hepatocytes. We experienced HCA demonstrating a high uptake of (18)F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) on positron emission tomography-computed tomography, mimicking a malignant tumor. The mechanism underlying the uptake of FDG has not been identified. Here, we discuss that an enhancement of glucose metabolism via an increased expression of glucose transporter 2 may have a role in the high uptake of FDG shown by HCAs.

RESUMEN

Pelvic schwannoma typically forms a large, well-circumscribed mass in the retroperitoneum or presacral area and frequently undergoes cystic degeneration. It appears as a well-demarcated round or oval mass, often showing prominent cystic degeneration and calcification. Characteristics of these calcifications are punctate, mottled, or curvilinear and are seen along the walls of the mass. Herein, we describe a case of schwannoma presenting a huge pelvic mass with unique eggshell-like calcification.

RESUMEN

Glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored protein Thy-1 is abundantly expressed on the cell surface of neurons and T lymphocytes in rodents. Although Thy-1 is known to bind integrins as a ligand and to mediate neurite outgrowth and immune responses, its precise function is not fully understood. Previously we produced several anti rat Thy-1 monoclonal antibodies and identified one, 2E11, which induces PC12 cell neurite outgrowth. Here we screened antibodies that inhibit 2E11-induced neurite outgrowth and stimulate or inhibit rat thymocyte aggregation. Since Thy-1 lacks an intracellular region, it requires other membrane-bound molecules for the signal transduction. Hence these antibodies are hypothesized to play key roles in the interaction between Thy-1 and signaling molecules. To elucidate the mechanisms of antibody-induced Thy-1 functions, antibody characterization and epitope determination were carried out. Thy-1 cleavage and mutation revealed that the antibodies recognize not only amino acid sequences, but also the three-dimensional structures consisting of immunoglobulin-like domains. Two antibodies were suggested to bind spatially close to the integrin binding site and crosslink Thy-1 molecules, while a third antibody is believed to inhibit Thy-1 crosslinking and subsequent Thy-1 signaling. The antibodies reported here may therefore function as crosslinkers, agonists, or antagonists that modify Thy-1 signaling.
