RESUMEN

In looking back over 3 decades since the development of his interest in developing a unitary conceptualization of despair, nurse scholar W. Richard Cowling, III, had new insights and revelations. The purpose of this dialogue article is to re-envision this journey as one of unfolding, seen with the gift of new eyes. Revisiting this journey allowed him to understand and appreciate it anew. Horizons of possibilities of this conceptual journey are explained in terms of conceptual-theoretical development, inquiry, and the advancement of discipline-specific knowledge, and improving the lives of women in despair. It is his sincere hope, as with all meaningful scholarly endeavors, that a wider discourse occurs with the persistent inclusion of women's voices and experiences.

RESUMEN

Following one's passion can lead nursing educators and scientists to develop nursing knowledge. Influenced by her and her family's experiences with healthcare, Dr. Shannon Avery-Desmarais, a nurse practitioner, nurse educator, and scientist, has developed a theoretical framework with her colleagues to promote minority PhD and DNP student success in nursing education. In addition, she and other colleagues are looking at stigma in nursing students and how nursing education can decrease stigma toward patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). In this column, Dr. Avery-Desmarais shares her influences on nursing knowledge and discusses her early contributions to nursing.

RESUMEN

Dr. Marilyn A. Ray, nurse scholar and retired United States Air Force (USAF) veteran and former flight nurse, began her nursing scholarship in Canada. She was influenced by the experiences and interprofessional scholarly ideas that she encountered along her career trajectory. Her early love of the air and space led her to the United States Air Force Nurse Corps, where she served as a flight nurse during the Vietnam war era, followed by leadership positions in nursing education, administration, practice, and research. Dr. Ray's contributions to nursing knowledge includes two nursing theories and a caring inquiry methodology. Dr. Ray is helping to create a new caring science certificate program at Florida Atlantic University, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing. In this column, Dr. Ray shares the story of her scholarly influences and how they helped her care for her husband and gain insight into her contributions to nursing knowledge development.

RESUMEN

There are many nursing scholars who have contributed to nursing knowledge. Dr. Monika Schuler started her career as a cranberry biologist and is now a nurse scholar and educator. Her contributions to nursing knowledge include two new models that contribute to our understanding of nursing professional growth: (1) the reflection, feedback, and restructuring model for role development in nursing and (2) the substance use disorder nursing attitude model. Dr. Schuler is working with colleagues toward developing an understanding of how nursing experiences inform their role development. In this scholarly dialogue, Dr. Schuler shares her path to nursing scholarship and her recent contributions to nursing knowledge development.

RESUMEN

The year 2022 is Nursing Science Quarterly's 35th year in publication, and we are dialoging with nurse theorists. We hope to uncover influences and origins of their theoretical thinking and hear about their current projects related to nursing science. In this scholarly dialogue column, we dialogue with Dr. Jessica Hemberg, a former nursing student of nurse theorist Dr. Katie Eriksson who was internationally known for her theory of caritative caring. In 1986, Professor Eriksson was invited to create a caring science academic program at Åbo Akademi University in Vaasa, Finland, which drew graduate students from all Nordic countries.Eriksson's work highlighted the uniqueness and dignity of the human being and the importance of protecting the vulnerable suffering human being. Dr. Eriksson passed away in 2019, and we are grateful to spend some time with one of her PhD students.

We hope to uncover influences and origins of their theoretical thinking and hear about their current projects related to nursing science. In this scholarly dialogue column, we dialogue with Sister Callista Roy, nurse theorist, retired professor at Mount Saint Mary's University and Professor Emeritus at Boston College Connell School of Nursing. Her contribution to nursing science began in her master's program and her Roy adaptation model (RAM) has been the foundation for countless studies across at least five continents, nursing programs, and implementation practice projects.

Marlaine C. Smith, nurse theorist, Professor Emeritus, Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing, Florida Atlantic University, and president of the Society of Rogerian Scholars. Her contribution to nursing science began with her own inquisitiveness, the influence of nursing faculty and mentors, and an academic career based steeped in leadership and nursing theory. Her middle-range theory of unitary caring synthesizes her work in the science of unitary human beings and caring science.

RESUMEN

Davis proposed that there are three overlapping phases of a caring relationship to NCLEX-RN® preparation, grounded in Peplau's theory. Faculty members' perspectives on successful strategies related to NCLEX-RN® results were explored using semistructured phone interviews. Faculty perspectives were categorized under external support structures and internal collaborative processes. The results indicate that a multifaceted collaborative approach using commercial testing products and program evaluation is the best approach.

RESUMEN

Holistic admission review (HAR) practices have been identified as a means to increase diversity in the nursing profession. HAR practices consider the whole applicant in a dignified and respectful manner, while focusing on valued experiences, attributes, and metrics needed for the nursing profession. Nursing has lagged behind other healthcare professions in implementing holistic admissions and with support from national organizations are starting to move onward. Interviewing applicants appears to be a process embraced not only by healthcare service organizations but now by schools (and colleges) of nursing (SONs) that have implemented HAR practices. There is much to gain and not much to lose by using holistic admissions. In addition, increasing diversity in nursing is the only way one can determine if nursing diversity improves health disparities. Faculty need to consider all that their SONs, the profession, and those they serve can gain by implementing holistic admissions.

RESUMEN

Shame is an ethical tenet of the humanbecoming ethos, dignity. While shame is a difficult concept to discuss, it is used by some disciplines to transform society. Shaming has become the norm in 2020 society with the advent of social media. A recent press release noted that nursing is complicit with racism if they do not speak up against it. The press release is examined using Milton's straight talk of nursing ethics and Parse's leading-following model to determine if shaming was used to transform nursing related to racism or if it was a nurse leader's act of courage.

RESUMEN

The authors focus on discussing the barriers in the use of physical assessment skills by RNs (Registered Nurses) in mainland China. This study was a multicenter, cross-sectional survey conducted in 6 cities with 1,115 RNs in mainland China. The results indicated that 15.36% of the skills were used regularly, where general and skin condition assessment skills are used most frequently. Lack of training and a unified documentation form were the top two barriers RNs faced. In conclusion, RNs are not performing assessment skills with required proficiency in mainland China and still need managerial attention in continuing education.
