RESUMEN

Effects of a number of quinones and diphenols of various structures on free-radical fragmentation processes taking place in alpha-diols, glycerol, 2-aminoethanol, glycero-1-phosphate, ethylene glycol monobutyrate, maltose, and some lipids were investigated. Quinone additions have been found to change the direction of free-radical transformations of the compounds cited above by inhibiting formation of the respective fragmentation products owing to oxidation of radicals of the starting compounds. The results obtained and literature data available allow a suggestion to be made that the system quinone/diphenol is able to not only deactivate or generate such active species as O2.- but also control the realization probability of free-radical processes of peroxidation and fragmentation in biologically important molecules.

RESUMEN

Four hundred and eighty Ixodes ricinus (278 female and 202 male) samples collected in the natural biotopes of 13 administrative districts in southwest Byelarus were studied via DSK-H medium (Sigma) inoculation. Twenty-four spirochetes isolates (3, 2, 1, and 18 in the Brest, Gomel, Mogilev, and Grodno regions, respectively) were obtained on the territory of Byelarus. After adapted to the medium, most isolates (as many as 7 x 10(6)-5 x 10(7) microbial cells per ml) in the stationary phase. All the obtained isolates were cryoconserved at the level of 2-6 passages and after -70 degrees C storage during 4-6 months (a followup period) they were able to recover their initial reproductive activity in the fresh BSK-H medium. Proceeding from preidentification using a comparative electrophoretic analysis of the molecular mass of polypeptides, the pattern of their specific reactivity with polyclonal serum antibodies from the rabbit immunized with cultured Borrelia afzelii (Ip21 strain), in immunoblotting and indirect immunofluorescence assay, I. ricinus spirochetes were referred to Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato isolates.

RESUMEN

As a result of herpes simplex virus reactivation with holoxan in rabbit reconvalescents with acute primary herpetic keratoconjunctivitis, the ophthalmic herpes relapse was observed and it was characterized by a more severe and prolonged course with longterm viremia and generalization of the infection. In the survived animals the chronic, recurrent ophthalmic herpes was developed.

RESUMEN

The large immune stratum and intense collective immunity to virus hepatitis A among the urban population of Byelorussia are characteristic of hyperendemic territory. The geometric mean of the antibody titer has been noted to increase with age, which is probably due to repeated infections of persons who have already had the disease. The use of this value for the characterization of collective immunity and epidemiological situation has been proposed.

RESUMEN

The use of monolayer brain cell cultures from humans who had died of amyotrophic leukospongiosis and from animals with experimentally induced diseases allowed the authors to explore pathogenetic contribution of astrocytes to this disease. Morphofunctional heterogeneity of astrocyte population as well as the pathologic involvement of some of the cells were demonstrated, using light and electron microscopy and cytochemical technics.

RESUMEN

The epidemiological aspects of amyotrophic leukospongiosis (AL), a slow viral infection of the central nervous system leading to the fatal outcome in 2-4 years, have been studied. As a rule, this disease is observed in the inhabitants of rural areas or in town dwellers born in rural areas and having spent there a considerable part of their life. AL occurs in persons of middle and older age; young people under 19 years and old people over 68 years of age are not affected by this infection. In contrast to amyotrophic lateral sclerosis and the Jakob-Creutzfeldt disease, AL is characteristic for persons in the phase of hormonal activity. The disease starts mostly in autumn and winter; this regularity is especially pronounced in women. The morbidity level (according to the average annual data) is at present 0.3 per million of population. An increased morbidity rate is characteristic of the family and group type of the epidemic process. This higher morbidity rate, by one order higher than that observed in the sporadic type of morbidity, is caused by the gradual formation of "genetic isolates".

RESUMEN

A new model of chronic infection of BHK-21 cells with Machupo virus has been obtained. The chronically infected culture of BHK-21-M cells differed morphologically from the control culture by the presence of giant mono- and multinuclear forms with granular cytoplasm and by an increase in the number of small rounded cells. In the system of BHK-21-M cells, the persisting virus was produced permanently but the per cent of infected cells determined by indirect immunofluorescence and the infectious centre method was not high (12-17%). The main factor contributing to the development of Machupo virus persistence in this cell system appears to consist in the formation of defective interfering particles.
