RESUMEN

Between 1966 and 1983 we selected 209 patients with colorectal adenocarcinomas, stage B (14%) and C (86%) of Dukes, treated with convenient surgery in 100% of cases, 5-fluorouracil in 85% and postoperative radiotherapy with telecobalt in 46.41% of cases, doses of 5000 to 5500 cGy in 25 to 30 fractions. The results at five years postsurgery were: colon patients who received radiotherapy obtained a survival rate of 34 months versus 17 months for those who did not receive radiotherapy; rectum patients who received radiotherapy survival rate of 20 months versus 26 months for those who did not received. Local recurrences in patients who received radiotherapy were 9.30% for carcinomas of the colon and 11.53% for those with cancer of the rectum, and in patients who did not received radiotherapy local recurrences were 22.22% for those with cancer of the colon and 37.83% for those with cancer of the rectum.

RESUMEN

The results of treatments applied to 25 patients with stage I adenocarcinoma of the endometrium, are presented. The patients were attended between 1979 to 1984 at the Oncology Service of the Hospital 20 de Noviembre in Mexico City. Three successive methods of treatments were used: preoperative external radiation to the pelvis with telecobalt, using a dose of 5000 cGy in 6-7 weeks. Subsequently, one apparatus containing two capsules of radium of 20 or 15 mg within intravaginal applicator made of flexible plastic inserted in a vaginal acrylic cylinder; the dose given was 5000 cGy at vaginal mucosa. Finally, total abdominal hysterectomy and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The following results were obtained from the five years control period: 92 per cent of the patients were cured and without incidence of intrapelvic tumoral recidivation.

RESUMEN

The results of treatments applied to 142 patients with breast carcinoma stage III, in the Oncology Service from 1965 to 1974 are as follows: successive cycles of treatments were applied: irradiation with X-rays of 280 Kv-20 mA for ulcerated tumors or Cobalt 60 for non-ulcerated tumors, using a dose of 5,500 rad in eight weeks. Subsequently, in cases of residual neoplasia, mastectomy was used or an extra dose of 1,500 to 3,000 rad. Later, at the first sign of the spread of carcinoma, hormonal therapy was given and then chemotherapy. Survival rate after five years was as follows: 41.54% of patients survived and 58.45% died from the cancer.
