BACKGROUND: Renal artery variations are clinically significant due to their implications for surgical procedures and renal function. However, data on these variations in Sudanese populations are limited. This study aimed to determine the prevalence and characteristics of renal artery variations in a Sudanese population. METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted in Khartoum state from October 2017 to October 2020. A total of 400 Sudanese participants who underwent abdominal CT scans were included. Data on demographic characteristics, kidney measurements, and renal vasculature were collected and analyzed using descriptive statistics and inferential tests. RESULTS: The mean age of participants was 46.7 ± 18 years, with a nearly equal gender distribution. Overall, renal artery variations were present in 11% of participants, with accessory renal arteries observed in 6% of the study population. Among those with accessory vessels, 50% were on the right side, 29.2% on the left, and 20.8% bilateral, distributed across hilar 29.2%, lower polar 29.2%, and upper polar 41.7% regions. No significant associations were found between accessory renal arteries and age or gender (p-value > 0.05). However, participants with accessory renal arteries exhibited significantly narrower width 5.0 ± 1.4 than those with no with accessory renal arteries 5.8 ± 1.1 (p-value 0.002) Early dividing renal arteries were found in 5% of participants, with nearly half being bilateral. No significant associations were found between the presence of early dividing renal arteries and demographic or renal measurements (p-value > 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study provides valuable insights into the prevalence and characteristics of renal artery variations in a Sudanese population. The findings contribute to our understanding of renal anatomy in this demographic and can inform clinical practice and surgical planning, particularly in renal transplantation and other renal procedures.

Carcinoma of the lung is among the most common types of cancer globally. Concerning its histology, it is categorized as a non-small cell carcinoma (NSCLC) and a small cell cancer (SCLC) subtype. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are a member of non-coding RNA whose nucleotides range from 19 to 25. They are known to be critical regulators of cancer via epigenetic control of oncogenes expression and by regulating tumor suppressor genes. miRNAs have an essential function in a tumorous microenvironment via modulating cancer cell growth, metastasis, angiogenesis, metabolism, and apoptosis. Moreover, a wide range of information produced via several investigations indicates their tumor-suppressing, oncogenic, diagnostic assessment, and predictive marker functions in different types of lung malignancy. miRNA mimics or anti-miRNAs can be transferred into a lung cancer cell, with possible curative implications. As a result, miRNAs hold promise as targets for lung cancer treatment and detection. In this study, we investigate the different functions of various miRNAs in different types of lung malignancy, which have been achieved in recent years that show the lung cancer-associated regulation of miRNAs expression, concerning their function in lung cancer beginning, development, and resistance to chemotherapy, also the probability to utilize miRNAs as predictive biomarkers for therapy reaction.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Disturbance of gut microbiota plays a role in induction and progression of non alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) and the associated cognitive dysfunction. We supposed that high fat diet (HFD)-induced dysbiosis may lead to NASH/cognitive impairment co-morbidities through hippocampal TLR4/BDNF signaling pathway and the regaining of microbiota balance through probiotics could provide a therapeutic option. METHODOLOGY: Four groups of male Wister rats were used; Naïve, Lactobacillus Plantarum EMCC-1039 (LP EMCC-1039), NASH and NASH+ LP EMCC-1039 groups. After induction of NASH with high fat diet (HFD), LP EMCC-1039 was given daily by oral gavage in the last two weeks of experiment to the treated group. Body weight percentage (BW%) changes, Lee index (LI), liver function tests, expression of BDNF, TLR4 with RT-PCR and quantification of BDNF, TLR4 by ELISA were measured . Histological studies and assessment of cognitive function were also performed. RESULTS: NASH group showed an increase in BW% and LI . It was associated with cognitive deficits, an increase in hepatic, hippocampal TLR4 expression and decline in BDNF expression and protein, all p values were <0.05. Histological examination revealed significant decrease in number of viable cells and shrinking of pyramidal cells in hippocampus (p<0.05). Treatment with LP EMCC-1039 improved all these pathological changes significantly (p<0.05) with negative correlation between NAFLD activity score (NAS) and cognitive measurements. Additionally, hepatic and hippocampal TLR4 expression were decreased and BDNF expression and quantity were increased. CONCLUSIONS: Dysbiosis-induced NASH was associated with cognitive impairment and a probiotic (LP EMCC-1039) supplementation has beneficial effect through modulation of TLR4/BDNF signaling pathway.

Calf diarrhea is one of the major health challenges in cattle herds. The bacteriological examination of fecal samples collected from apparently healthy and diarrheic calves' revealed isolation of 26 E. coli isolates out of 56 calves with an incidence of 46.4%. Serogroups O1, O26, O44, O55, O115, O119, O125, O146, and O151 were identified from the collected fecal samples. Using PCR all isolates was positive for ompA gene species specific for E. coli. While stx1 and eaeA genes detected with incidence of 3.8 and 19.2% respectively from the isolates. The presence of stx2 gene was negative in the fecal isolates. Among colostrum samples 4 E. coli isolates were detected and serogrouped to O26, O55 and O119. They were negative for eaeA, stx1 and stx2 except strain number 4 (O55) was positive for stx1. E. coli strains were sensitive to norfloxacin (80.7%) and resistant to ampicillin and cefotaxime (100% each). Based on our findings, there was no association between occurrence of E. coli and age of calf (2-14 days), while bottle feeding calf colostrum may be a source of E. coli contamination.
