RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: The academic performance of nursing students significantly impacts their ability to deliver quality patient care. This descriptive correlational study investigated the effects of nursing students' locus of control, motivation, and learning strategies on their academic performance in a sample of 515 students. External locus of control was associated with higher scores in extrinsic goal orientation, task value, elaboration, and academic performance. Locus of control, test anxiety, and organization were identified as predictors of academic performance. The study highlights the need for further research on factors affecting academic performance and effective educational interventions.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Academic advising and counseling services support students in achieving their educational outcomes. Unfortunately, there is a paucity of research on academic advising and student-support systems among nursing students. Therefore, the current study aims to develop a student academic advising and counseling survey (SAACS) and measure its validity and reliability. METHODS: Cross-sectional design was used to collect online self-administered data from undergraduate nursing students in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. The SAACS is developed based on relevant literature and tested for content and construct validity. RESULTS: A total of 1,134 students from both sites completed the questionnaire. Students' mean age was 20.3 ± 1.4, and the majority of them were female (81.9%), single (95.6%), and unemployed (92.3%). The content validity index (CVI) of SAACS overall score (S-CVI) is 0.989, and S-CVI/UA (universal agreement) is 0.944, which indicates excellent content validity. The overall SAACS reliability showed an excellent internal consistency with a Cronbach's Alpha of 0.97 (95% CI: 0.966 - 0.972). CONCLUSIONS: The SAACS is a valid and reliable tool for assessing students' experience with academic advising and counseling services and can be utilized to improve those services in nursing school settings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is a serious medical condition that may cause blindness, renal failure and amputation of the lower limbs, stroke and myocardial infarction. The global incidence of diabetes increases continuously. The self-management of diabetes can be problematic and burdensome, especially if employed individuals choose not to reveal their illness. The workplace has been highlighted as an important element that may impact how employed individuals, diagnosed with diabetes and managed their illness. AIM: To describe the influence of diabetes disclosure on the cognitive, physical ability and diabetes self-management of employed adults with diabetes in Saudi Arabia. DESIGN: A descriptive correlational study. METHODS: This study used a self-administered questionnaire, including the Checklist Individual Strength and Perceived Diabetes Self-Management Scale, for data collection. The sample size was 250 employed adults with diabetes. The data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Spearman's correlation coefficient and bivariate analysis. RESULTS: A significant correlation was found between diabetes self-management and support from co-workers (r = .55, p < .05), and the employees who received more support from their co-workers were able to perform diabetes self-management. The results also indicate that employees who received support at their workplace reported improved concentration, motivation and activity (r = .41, p < .05). CONCLUSION: It is essential for top management and policymakers to implement supportive programmes in the workplace, and considering a constant, not rotating, work schedule.
