RESUMEN

Concentration of total thyroxine, normalized thyroxine ratio, T3-RIA, and Serum TSH before and 30 minutes after stimulation with 0,2 mg TRH i.v. in various forms of euthyroid goiter were determined. There were no significant differences between the three clinical groups of goiter patients. We draw the conclusion that the dependence on TSH, as one important factor in pathogenesis, can on the one hand lead to a diffuse goiter and, on the other hand lead to a nodous goiter. That means, that different developments of goiter are determined by specific thyroid tissue factors.

RESUMEN

A total of 330 male 3-week-old mice of the N.M.R.I./Han. strain were infected with the M-variant of the EMC (encephalomyocarditis) virus by subcutaneous inoculation of 0.25 ml of the virus suspension diluted 1:500. Animals were killed at 4- or 6-hour intervals, respectively, and groups of 2 to 8 hearts were taken for virological, morphological, and biochemical studies. Before the 8th hour after the inoculation, no virus and no pathological cell changes could be detected in the hearts; it is assumed, therefore, that there first takes place an extracardiac virus cultiplication. The virus content in the hearts increases from the 12th to the 30th ahour and subsequently maintains that level. Also from the 12th to the 30th hour, electron microscopy reveals increasing damage of the myocardial cells, the course of which is described. In most instances following virus-induced damage of the myocardial cells, the onset of alterations of the blood and lymph capillaries and damage to the interstitial cells were observed...

RESUMEN

Nutritional disturbance and blockage of drainage of the vascular wall which were considered to play an impoetant role in the pathogenesis of arteriosclerosis were experimentally produced by aortic sheathing previously (Huth et al., 1974). Alteration of the rabbit aorta following feeding of cholesterol diet in combination with sheathing of aortic segments by polyethylen tubes is reported in this paper. The results were as follows: 1. When rabbtis were fed a cholesterol diet, atherosclerotic lesions formed in the intima of the aorta. 2. When rabbits were fed a cholesterol diet with simultaneous aortic sheathing, aortic atherosclerosis was also produced within the sheathed segments. 3. When rabbits were fed a cholesterol diet after formation of intimal thickenings within the sheathed segments, lipid deposition was scarce within these segments. The results suggest that among the pathogenetic factors of atherosclerosis a disturbance of vascular nutrition and a blockage of vascular drainage may be of greater importance than hypercholesterolemia.
