RESUMEN

Two hundred eighty-one undergraduates at a large university in the southeastern United States anonymously completed a 26-item questionnaire about the degree to which they deceived their parents during high school. Only five percent of the respondents reported that they had never lied to their parents about "where I was." "Who I was with," "my alcohol use," and "my sexual behavior" were additional topics about which they lied the most. It was also found that (1) females lied more than males about sexual behavior, (2) the opposite-sex parent was deceived more often, and (3) intact homes were associated with more lying. Respondents also reported more lies when they lived with their parents than when they left for college. The implications of the findings are discussed.

RESUMEN

The use of replacement FVII is critical to the successful treatment of life-threatening bleeds in newborns and infants with severe FVII deficiency (<1%). However, the clinical efficacy, optimum dosage and pharmacologic recovery of rFVIIa in such children has not been studied systematically. This report is a case of an infant with severe FVII deficiency (FVII:C at 0%) and massive intracranial haemorrhage in which successful use of rFVIIa (NovoSeven) was carefully monitored. The drug was administered by intravenous bolus through a central line every 4 h at each of three dose levels: 15 microg kg-1, 22 microg kg-1 and 30 microg kg-1. FVII:C was >100% between 30 and 180 min after each infusion with mean trough levels above 25% for all three dose levels. There was no evidence of hyper-coagulation as indicated by measurements of the platelet count, D-dimer, plasma protamine paracoagulant and fibrinogen levels in spite of high FVII:C concentration. In this infant, rFVIIa was well-tolerated, maintained effective haemostasis with good clinical outcome, and produced consistent therapeutic mean trough levels above 25% FVII:C even at 15 microg kg-1 every 4 h.

RESUMEN

In an attempt to understand the paucity of women in psychiatric research, a descriptive pilot survey of women psychiatry residents in three residency programs was undertaken in 1992 to investigate the factors that influenced career choice and interest in research. Only 5% of the respondents intended to pursue an academic career with an emphasis on research; 60% listed a research career as their last choice. Significant factors that affect professional training and subsequent career choice included the women's desire for a nurturing training environment, availability of mentors/role models, and personal and family considerations.

RESUMEN

Consumer confidence is at its lowest ebb since 1980. Economic growth is at a standstill & unemployment & inflation are both rising. Here's a front-line report from more than three dozen operators who are fending off the recession's dual pressures of slow sales & rising costs. They are using discount pricing, partnering with vendors, setting pay for performance standards & a variety of other recession-beating practices.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence and correlates of anticipatory nausea and vomiting in a sample of pediatric patients with cancer who were receiving outpatient chemotherapy. Forty male and female patients representing a broad range of diagnoses were interviewed with their parents concerning nausea and vomiting before and after chemotherapy. Anticipatory nausea was reported by 28.8% of the sample; anticipatory vomiting was present in 20% of the sample. An additional 9% had experienced anticipatory nausea and vomiting in the past but not currently. Anticipatory nausea and vomiting was positively correlated with the emetic potential of chemotherapeutic regimens and the severity of nausea and vomiting after chemotherapy; anticipatory nausea and vomiting most often developed within the first 4 months of treatment. Onset of anticipatory nausea and vomiting usually occurred two to four hours before treatment and was most severe at the actual time of drug administration. Considerable interpatient variability was observed, with treatment-related factors accounting for only 22% of the variance in the occurrence of anticipatory nausea and vomiting. These findings are considered within a behavioral framework for understanding conditioned aversions in pediatric patients with cancer. Implications for patient education, future research on the prediction of children at risk, and intervention are discussed.
