RESUMEN

The geometries of aluminum-magnesium nanoalloys are explored using a genetic algorithm applied to the Gupta potential function and tuned to search for the 10 lowest energy minima for each cluster size and composition. Each structure is re-optimized using density functional theory calculations, allowing both a classical and quantum analysis of the system. Average binding energies, excess energies and HOMO-LUMO gaps are calculated. Differences between classical and quantum descriptions are discussed. The results reveal structures that are particularly stable, and a discussion on magic numbers of valence electrons is presented.

RESUMEN

Medical Cyber-Physical Systems (MCPS) are currently a trending topic of research. The main challenges are related to the integration and interoperability of connected medical devices, patient safety, physiologic closed-loop control, and the verification and validation of these systems. In this paper, we focus on patient safety and MCPS validation. We present a formal patient model to be used in health care systems validation without jeopardizing the patient's health. To determine the basic patient conditions, our model considers the four main vital signs: heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure and body temperature. To generate the vital signs we used regression models based on statistical analysis of a clinical database. Our solution should be used as a starting point for a behavioral patient model and adapted to specific clinical scenarios. We present the modeling process of the baseline patient model and show its evaluation. The conception process may be used to build different patient models. The results show the feasibility of the proposed model as an alternative to the immediate need for clinical trials to test these medical systems.

RESUMEN

Investigation of oral administration of Saccharomyces boulardii in healthy volunteers demonstrates several cellular and humoral changes in peripheral blood. Among its effects are the increase of erythrocytes, leucocytes, polymorphs, neutrophils, complement components C3, C5, C3d, serum anticomplementary activity and leucocyte chemokinesis, specially when autologous serum and antigen have been added to the culture medium and decrease of complement haemolytic activity (CH50, classic and alternative pathways). We have also demonstrated that in vitro S. boulardii was able to activate complement directly, to fix C3b to its surface and that its phagocytosis by mononuclear cells was complement-dependent. The overall changes in serum proteins suggested changes of acute phase proteins typical of an inflammatory process. Furthermore S. boulardii had no mitogenic response of lymphocyte populations. Our results demonstrated that S. boulardii activates the reticuloendothelial system and complement system and suggest that S. boulardii merits therapeutic trial in a variety of clinical situations.
