RESUMEN
Abstract Increasing habitat modification and species loss demand consistent efforts to describe and understand biodiversity patterns. The BIOTA/FAPESP Program was created in this context and it has been a successful initiative to promote studies on biodiversity and conservation in Brazil. The BIOTA/Araçá is an interdisciplinary project that provided a detailed evaluation of the biodiversity of Araçá Bay, a coastal seascape located on the North coast of the state of São Paulo, Southeast Brazil. The bay encompasses multiple habitats, such as beaches, mangroves, rocky shores, and a tidal flat, and provides important ecosystem services. Unfortunately, the bay is the subject of complex social-environmental conflicts that oppose economic, social, and environmental demands (i.e., the expansion of neighboring harbor activities vs. small-scale artisanal fisheries and protection of biodiversity). The present study presents a survey of the benthic species occurring in the different habitats of Araçá Bay, including data obtained during the BIOTA/Araçá project and previous assessments of the area. The benthic species play an important role in marine environments and studying the diversity of these organisms that live associated with the bottom is indispensable for comprehending the environment's functioning. The macrofauna, meiofauna, and microorganisms associated with soft and hard bottom were listed, and additional information, such as the habitat and geographical distribution, were provided for each species. The checklist includes 826 species, almost 70% recorded during the BIOTA/Araçá project. The most speciose taxa were the annelids (225 spp.), mollusks (194 spp.), and crustaceans (177 spp.). Seven benthic species are endemic to Araçá Bay, 14 are considered threatened, and seven are economically exploited. Furthermore, the bay is the type locality of many taxa, and 11 new benthic species were described based on specimens sampled during the project. This project shows the importance of Araçá Bay as a unique biologically rich environment and highlights the need for conservation efforts in light of the current threats.
ABSTRACT Introduction: Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) is commonly used in patients with Duchene (DMD) and Becker (DMB) Neuromuscular Dystrophies. Late gadolinium enhancement (LGE) identifies areas of middle, subepicardial, or subendocardial wall fibrosis, and volumetric left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is considered the gold standard in the diagnosis and prognosis of these dystrophies. Myocardial fibrosis occurs in patients with neuromuscular dystrophies. The purposes of our study were to determine the presence of cardiac fibrosis using CMR, to determine neuromuscular and cardiac involvement, and to evaluate the cardiovascular outcomes of these patients. Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study of 16 consecutive patients was conducted from March 2021 to July 2022 in the Cardiac Imaging Service of Diagnóstico Médico and CEMET- Tucumán. Results: A total of 16 patients were evaluated, 100% of them with confirmed diagnosis of DMD/DMB by laboratory, enzymes and genetic tests. Mean age was 19 years. All patients had severe stage of the Vignos Scale and were under neurological treatment. All patients were also treated with beta-blockers or angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors. CMR revealed severe LVEF impairment <35% in 4 patients, segmental or global left ventricular (LV) wall motion disorders in 8 patients, and variable distribution pattern (diffuse, mesocardial, subendocardial and subepicardial patterns) of LGE in 12 patients. Non-compacted myocardium was observed in 6, and mild pericardial effusions in 2 patients. Conclusion: CMR should be included as a screening method in patients with neuromuscular dystrophies. Its contribution to clinical, echocardiographic and therapeutic staging is of utmost importance.
RESUMEN
Two new species of pycnophyid Kinorhyncha, Leiocanthus quinquenudus sp. nov. and L. satanicus sp. nov., are described from soft seafloor sediment samples in the Gulf of Mexico. Leiocanthus quinquenudus sp. nov. is easily distinguished from the other congeners by the absence of ventromedial setae on segment 5, a structure otherwise present in all the other known Leiocanthus. Leiocanthus satanicus sp. nov. lacks lateral terminal spines, a feature only shared by L. langi and L. mainensis among the congeners; otherwise the new species is easily discernible by the arrangement of the paradorsal, laterodorsal and ventromedial setae, and the number of ventral sensory spots per segment. These findings are a significant contribution to the knowledge of the Kinorhyncha biodiversity from the Gulf of Mexico, which has recently been explored in several taxonomical and ecological studies mainly focused on cyclorhagid Kinorhyncha, not pycnophyid kinorhynchs.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a type of spindle-cell tumor of very low incidence that tumor has an aggressive behavior, with high mortality rates; therefore, its management must be surgical, with a wide resection of the lesion. The role of radio and chemotherapy in its management is not clear. We present the case of a 28-year-old female patient who consulted for pain lasting 2 months in the right knee. Radiographically, it was characterized as a pure osteolytic lesion in the distal femur. Contrast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed hypervascular areas within the tumor. The scintigraphy showed a marked increase in radiotracer uptake. A biopsy was taken, with a pathology report of well-differentiated osseous LMS. It was treated with 3 cycles of preoperative neoadjuvant chemotherapy with ifosfamide 1,000 mg/m2 in the first 3 days, as well as doxorubicin 70 mg/m2 , and surgical resection of the lesion and limb salvage with knee endoprosthesis. Once the lesion was resected, the patient underwent adjuvant chemotherapy, with 4 cycles of gencitabine 1,000 mg/m2 between days 1 and 8, and doxetacel 70 mg/m2 on day 1. During the 2-month follow-up, the patient presented a fracture in the middle third of the clavicle, which was compatible with a pathological lesion on radiographs and positron-emission tomography (PET) scans. The biopsy showed a metastatic lesion of bone LMS, which was treated by surgical resection of the clavicle. This is a unique case, given that, during the follow-up, the patient underwent adjuvant treatment with chemotherapy, and was evaluated with a PET scan, with a satisfactory clinical evolution and no evidence of new lesions.

Superficial CD34 (CD34) antigen positive fibroblastic soft-tissue tumor is a rare, lowfrequency tumor, characterized histologically by marked pleomorphism, low mitotic activity, and diffuse immunoreactivity for CD34. It may behave like a mesenchymal tumor of intermediate malignancy. There are only 52 cases published in the literature. We present the case of a 31-year-old patient with a long progressive and painful growth of a soft-tissue lesion in the left inguinal region. The mass was biopsied and, with the suspicion of a superficial CD34-positive fibroblast tumor, it was subsequently treated with an enlarged resection of the lesion and covering the skin defect with a local V-Y advancement flap, with a satisfactory evolution in the postoperative follow-up. The pathology report confirmed the diagnostic suspicion of a tumor with strong reactivity for CD34, with P53 protein in 60% to 70%, Ki67 antigen in less than 15%, without loss of INI-1, and with negativity for CD31, CD163, AE1AE3, CAM5.2, EMA, CD30, progestin receptors, S100 protein and desmin, with negative borders.

Species distribution patterns are constrained by historical and ecological processes in space and time, but very often the species range sizes are geographical sampling biases resulting from unequal sampling effort. One of the most common definitions of endemism is based on the "congruence of distributional areas" criterion, when two or more species have the same distributional limits. By acknowledging that available data of marine meiobenthic species are prone to geographical sampling bias and that can affect the accuracy of the biogeographical signals, the present study combines analyses of inventory incompleteness and recognition of spatial congruence of Gastrotricha, Kinorhyncha, meiobenthic Annelida and Tardigrada in order to better understand the large-scale distribution of these organisms in coastal and shelf areas of the world. We used the marine bioregionalization framework for geographical operative units to quantify the inventory incompleteness effect (by modelling spatial predictions of species richness) and to recognize areas of endemism. Our models showed that the difference between observed and expected species richness in the Southern Hemisphere is much higher than in the Northern Hemisphere. Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity delimited 20 areas of endemism, most found in the Northern Hemisphere. Distribution patterns of meiobenthic species are shown to respond to events of geographical barriers and abiotic features, and their distribution is far from homogeneous throughout the world. Also, our data show that ecoregions with distinct biotas have at least some cohesion over evolutionary time. However, we found that inventory incompleteness may significantly affect the explanatory power of areas of endemism delimitation in both hemispheres. Yet, whereas future increases in sampling efforts are likely to change the spatial congruence ranges in the Southern Hemisphere, patterns for the Northern Hemisphere may prove to be relatively more resilient.

Estuarine ecosystems are characterized by a wide physical-chemical variation that in the context of global change scenarios may be exacerbated in the future. The fitness of resident organisms is expected to be influenced by such variation and, hence, its study is a priority. Some of that variation relates to water vertical stratification, which may create "environmental refuges" or distinct layers of water with conditions favoring the fitness of some individuals and species. This study explored the performance of juvenile mussels (M. chilensis) settled in two distinctive water depths (1â¯m and 4â¯m) of the Reloncaví fjord (southern Chile) by conducting a reciprocal transplants experiment. Salinity, saturation state and the contents of CO3 in seawater were among the factors that best explained the differences between the two layers. In such environmental conditions, the mussel traits that responded to such variation were growth and calcification rates, with significantly higher values at 4â¯m deep, whereas the opposite, increased metabolic stress, was higher in mussels raised and transplanted to the surface waters (1â¯m). Such differences support the notion of an environmental refuge, where species like mussels can find better growth conditions and achieve higher performance levels. These results are relevant considering the importance of M. chilensis as a shellfish resource for aquaculture and a habitat forming species. In addition, these results shed light on the variable responses exhibited by estuarine organisms to small-scale changes in the characteristics of the water column, which in turn will help to better understand the responses of the organisms to the projected scenarios of climate global change.

Background Joint replacements are always defined as safe and successful procedures for the treatment of severe osteoarthritis of the hip and knee around the world. Rates of readmission within initial post surgical 30 days and complications are described as a measure to assess quality standards. In Colombia the behavior of the standards are mainly unknown. Aim of study is to provide information from a specialized in joint replacements center in Colombia. Methods A prospective observational study was carried out on a cohort of 1,126 patients with 626 total hip replacements (THR) and 500 knee replacements (TKR), who underwent surgery between 2011-2015 at a University Hospital in Bogotá, Colombia. 30-day readmission rates and complications were reported. The associations between sociodemographic and clinical variables with readmission and complications were analyzed using a regression model. Results 71% of the patients were women, the average age was 63 years for men and 65 years for women. The mean hospital stay was 3.5 days (SD: 0.81-6.29). The 30-day readmission rate for any cause was 10.8% and the rate of complications associated with the procedure was 5.8%. Additional surgical procedures were required in 1.5% of the patients. A statistically significant association was found between the Charlson index greater than 2 (OR=2.33 [95% CI 1.3-4.18], p=0.004) and readmission at 30 days. The main complication in THR was dislocation (1.4%) and surgical site infection (4%) in TKR. A significant association was found between complications at 30 days and days of hospitalization (OR=1.17 [95% CI 1.09-1.25], p=0.00); and with surgeon 4 in TKR (OR=2.28 [95% CI 1.29-4.01], p=0.04); the other variables did not show significant differences. No differences were found with what is reported in the literature, association with hospital stay and experience of the surgeon. Discussion The surgeon's experience and the application of clinical guidelines that optimize in-hospital processes and regulate the days of hospital stay are related to a better outcome in the evolution of patients in terms of the number of complications and readmissions after 30 days.

RESUMEN
Background: Aspergillus flavus is one of the most common agents of invasive aspergillosis and is associated with high mortality. The orotomides are a new class of antifungal agents with a novel mechanism of action. An understanding of the pharmacodynamics (PD) of the lead compound F901318 is required to plan safe and effective regimens for clinical use. Methods: The pharmacokinetics (PK) and PD of F901318 were evaluated by developing new in vitro and in vivo models of invasive fungal sinusitis. Galactomannan was used as a pharmacodynamic endpoint in all models. Mathematical PK-PD models were used to describe dose-exposure-response relationships. Results: F901318 minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) ranged from 0.015 to 0.06 mg/L. F901318 induced a concentration-dependent decline in galactomannan. In the in vitro model, a minimum concentration:MIC of 10 resulted in suppression of galactomannan; however, values of approximately 10 and 9-19 when assessed by survival of mice or the decline in galactomannan, respectively, were equivalent or exceeded the effect induced by posaconazole. There was histological clearance of lung tissue that was consistent with the effects of F901318 on galactomannan. Conclusions: F901318 is a potential new agent for the treatment of invasive infections caused by A flavus with PDs that are comparable with other first-line triazole agents.

A new kinorhynch species, Paracentrophyes sanchezae n. sp., is described from the Gulf of Mexico. The new species is distinguished from its congeners by its relatively low number of perispinal setae. In addition to the new species, the existence of one undescribed species of Paracentrophyes in the Gulf of Mexico is also reported. This undescribed species has very short lateral terminal spines, and the number of perispinal setae is lower than in any other known species of Paracentrophyes. Diagnostic notes are provided for this unnamed species, but the available material is too limited to provide a formal description.

INTRODUCTION/PURPOSE: BRG1 is a key regulator of leukemia stem cells. Indeed, it has been observed that this type of cells is unable to divide, survive and develop new tumors when BRG1 is down-regulated. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed BRG1 and miR-155 expression in 23 leukemia cell lines, and two no pathological lymphocyte samples using qPCR. MiR-155 transfection and western blot were used to analyze the relationship between miR-155 and its validated target, BRG1, by measuring protein expression levels. The effect of miR-155 on cell proliferation and prednisolone sensitivity were studied with resazurin assay. RESULTS: BRG1 expression levels could correlate negatively with miR-155 expression levels, at least in Burkitt's lymphoma and diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) cell lines. To clarify the role of miR-155 in the regulation of BRG1 expression, we administrated miR-155 mimics in different leukemia/lymphoma cell lines. Our results suggest that miR-155 regulate negatively and significantly the BRG1 expression at least in the MOLT4 cell line. CONCLUSION: Our study revealed a previously unknown miR-155 heterogeneity that could result in differences in the treatment with miRNAs in our attempt to inhibit BRG1. However, the expression levels of BRG1 and miR-155, before prednisolone treatment were not statistically significantly associated prednisolone sensitive leukemia cells.

RESUMEN
Meiofauna sampling on the continental shelf of the northern Gulf of Mexico has been ongoing since 2007, on annual cruises in collaboration with the National Marine Fisheries Service laboratory in Pascagoula, Mississippi. This sampling has resulted in numerous new species of kinorhynchs from the shelf sediment, two of which are described in detail in this paper. Other species descriptions from this research effort include Echinoderes augustae, Echinoderes skipperae, and Echinoderes charlotteae. We now describe Echinoderes romanoi sp. n. and Echinoderes joyceae sp. n., which are unique in their spine, tube, and glandular cell outlet patterns.
BACKGROUND: Adolescents and young lesbian, gay and bisexual (LGB) present additional challenges in their development compared to their heterosexual peers which exposes them to high levels of stress and distress that can lead to sexual risk behaviors. AIM: To analyze the sexual behavior, personal characteristics and sexual orientation in adolescents that attended in a center of sexual and reproductive health. METHODS: Analytical cross-sectional study conducted in an adolescent population. Data were collected in 2000-2012. Multiple logistic regression was used to quantify comparisons of sexual behaviors and personal variables between LGB and heterosexual adolescents. RESULTS: In total, 5,143 adolescents (median age 16 years, 91.5% women and 97.5% students) were studied, 127 were LGB teenagers. LGB adolescents reported risk having more sexual partners and sexual debut earlier than their heterosexual peers. This risk increased by catholic teenagers. Using contraception methods showed no risk in catholic teenagers but adolescents as-signed to another religion or no religion which was a risk factor. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study show that the LGB and heterosexual adolescents are not identical in terms of sexual risk. LGB engages in riskier sexual behaviors than heterosexual counterparts. Healthcare providers and the education sector need to be sensitive to these differences and their implications for health and counseling of adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study aims to asses a cancer fast-track programme (CFP) to shorten the time since a patient with suspicion of cancer is referred by the primary care (PC) physician to the specialized medical team. METHODS: Guidelines for main suspected tumours were designed to help PC physicians to detect and rapidly refer cases to the CFP oncology coordinator, who sent them to the appropriate department to accelerate diagnosis, staging and therapy. All patients analysed in this report were referred from June 2009 to July 2012. RESULTS: A total of 897 suspected cancer cases were submitted and finally 705 were studied. In 205 (29 %) a cancer diagnosis was confirmed within 23 days (median). Therapy was initiated within 46 days after referral (median). Early diagnoses with a potential curative approach were made in 166 (82 %). CONCLUSIONS: This CFP decreased the waiting time for cancer diagnosis, by improving communication between PC physician and specialized care teams. Most patients included in this program could get therapy with curative intent.

Digital tomosynthesis (DTS) of the chest is an imaging technique composed of similar components to digital radiography (DR). Its advantages over DR: more precise diagnosis of the thoracic structure alterations, useful for confirming or ruling out suspected nodules, detection of patients at high risk of lung cancer and the monitoring of known lesions. The DTS creates coronal thoracic reconstructions with resolution superior to CT; however it is limited by its depth resolution and sensitivity to movement, occasionally hiding lesions adjacent to the pleura, diaphragm and mediastinum. The radiation dose of DTS and the cost is much lower than CT. More specific applications as well as the pulmonary nodules are under investigation, such as mycobacterial infection, cystic fibrosis and others. A basic understanding of the usefulness of thoracic DTS and its technique may be useful for the radiologist.

The spontaneous colonization of a bauxite residue (alumina refining tailings) deposit by local vegetation in Linden, Guyana, over 30 years, indicates that natural weathering processes can ameliorate tailings to the extent that it can support vegetation. Samples were collected from vegetated and unvegetated areas to investigate the relationships between bauxite residue properties and vegetation cover. Compared to unvegetated areas, bauxite residue in vegetated areas had lower pH (mean pH 7.9 vs 10.9), lower alkalinity (mean titratable alkalinity 0.4 vs 1.4 mol H(+) kg(-1)), lower electrical conductivity (mean EC 0.3 vs 2.1 mS cm(-1)), lower total Al (mean Al2O3 19.8 vs 25.8% wt) and Na (mean Na2O 0.9 vs 3.7% wt), and less sodalite and calcite. Accumulation of N, NH4(+), and organic C occurred under vegetation, demonstrating the capacity for plants to modify residue to suit their requirements as a soil-like growth medium. Aeolian redistribution of coarse grained tailings appeared to support vegetation establishment by providing a thin zone of enhanced drainage at the surface. Natural pedogenic processes may be supplemented by irrigation, enhanced drainage, and incorporation of sand and organic matter at other tailings deposits to accelerate the remediation process and achieve similar results in a shorter time frame.
