RESUMEN

The pH- and thermo-responsive behavior of polymeric hydrogels MC-co-MA have been studied in detail using dynamic light scattering DLS, scanning electron microscopy SEM, nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) and rheology to evaluate the conformational changes, swelling-shrinkage, stability, the ability to flow and the diffusion process of nanoparticles at several temperatures. Furthermore, polymeric systems functionalized with acrylic acid MC and acrylamide MA were subjected to a titration process with a calcium chloride CaCl2 solution to analyze its effect on the average particle diameter Dz, polymer structure and the intra- and intermolecular interactions in order to provide a responsive polymer network that can be used as a possible nanocarrier for drug delivery with several benefits. The results confirmed that the structural changes in the sensitive hydrogels are highly dependent on the corresponding critical solution temperature CST of the carboxylic (-COOH) and amide (-CONH2) functional groups and the influence of calcium ions Ca2+ on the formation or breaking of hydrogen bonds, as well as the decrease in electrostatic repulsions generated between the polymer chains contributing to a particle agglomeration phenomenon. The temperature leads to a re-arrangement of the polymer chains, affecting the viscoelastic properties of the hydrogels. In addition, the diffusion coefficients D of nanoparticles were evaluated, showing a closeness among with the morphology, shape, size and temperature, resulting in slower diffusions for larger particles size and, conversely, the diffusion in the medium increasing as the polymer size is reduced. Therefore, the hydrogels exhibited a remarkable response to pH and temperature variations in the environment. During this research, the functionality and behavior of the polymeric nanoparticles were observed under different analysis conditions, which revealed notable structural changes and further demonstrated the nanoparticles promising high potential for drug delivery applications. Hence, these results have sparked significant interest in various scientific, industrial and technological fields.

RESUMEN

Phytoremediation is a useful, low-cost, and environmentally friendly alternative for the rehabilitation of heavy-metal-contaminated (HM) soils. This technology takes advantage of the ability of certain plant species to accumulate HMs in their tissues. Crotalaria pumila is a herbaceous plant with a wide geographical distribution that grows naturally in environments polluted with HMs. In this work, the bioaccumulation capacity of roots and leaves in relation to five HMs (Cr, Cu, Fe, Pb, and Zn) was evaluated, as well as the morphological changes presented in C. pumila growing in control substrate (without HMs) and mine-tailing substrate (with HMs) under greenhouse conditions for 150 days. Four metals with the following concentration pattern were detected in both tissues and substrates: Fe > Pb > Cu > Zn. Fe, Pb, and Zn concentrations were significantly higher in the roots and leaves of individuals growing on mine-tailing substrate compared to the control substrate. In contrast, Cu concentration increased over time in the exposed individuals. The bioconcentration factor showed a similar pattern in root and leaf: Cu > Fe > Pb > Zn. Around 87.5% of the morphological characters evaluated in this species decreased significantly in individuals exposed to HMs. The bioconcentration factor shows that C. pumila is efficient at absorbing Cu, Fe, and Pb from the mine-tailing substrate, in the root and leaf tissue, and the translocation factor shows its efficiency in translocating Cu from the roots to the leaves. Therefore, C. pumila may be considered as a HM accumulator plant with potential for phytoremediation of polluted soils with Cu, Pb, and Fe, along with the ability to establish itself naturally in contaminated environments, without affecting its germination rates. Also, it exhibits wide geographical distribution, it has a short life cycle, exhibits rapid growth, and can retain the mine-tailing substrate, extracting HMs in a short time.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Risk factors for severe dengue manifestations have been attributed to various factors, including specific serotypes, sex, and age. Mexico has seen the re-emergence of DENV-3, which has not circulated in a decade. OBJECTIVE: To describe dengue serotypes by age, sex, and their association with disease severity in dengue-positive serum samples from epidemiological surveillance system units. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A descriptive analysis was conducted to evaluate the frequency of dengue severity by sex, age, disease quarter, geographical location, and dengue virus serotypes. The study was conducted using laboratory samples from confirmed dengue cases through RT-qPCR from the epidemiological surveillance laboratory network of the Mexican Social Security Institute, Mexico. Simple frequencies and proportions were calculated using the z-test for proportional differences between groups. Bivariate analysis with adjusted Chi2 was performed, and binary logistic regression models were constructed using the forward Wald method considering the model's predictive capacity. The measure of association was the odds ratio, with 95% confidence intervals. Statistical significance was set to an alpha level of <0.05. RESULTS: In 2023, 10,441 samples were processed for dengue RT-qPCR at the IMSS, with a predominance of serotype DENV-3 (64.4%). The samples were mostly from women (52.0%) and outpatient cases (63.3%). The distribution of dengue severity showed significant variations by age, with a lower proportion of severe cases in young children and a higher proportion in the 5- to 14-year-old group. Hospitalizations increased significantly with severity. Warm regions had more cases overall and severity. Cases were most frequent from July to September. While DENV-2 was associated with severity, DENV-4 was not. Binary regression identified higher risk in women, age extremes, and DENV-2, with an overall predictive model of 58.5%. CONCLUSIONS: Women, age groups at the extremes of life, and the DENV-2 serotype presented severe risk of dengue in a population with social security in Mexico during 2023.

RESUMEN

French Guiana, located in the Guiana Shield, is a natural reservoir for many zoonotic pathogens that are of considerable medical or veterinary importance. Until now, there has been limited data available on the description of parasites circulating in this area, especially on protozoan belonging to the phylum Apicomplexa; conversely, the neighbouring countries describe a high parasitic prevalence in animals and humans. Epidemiological surveillance is necessary, as new potentially virulent strains may emerge from these forest ecosystems, such as Amazonian toxoplasmosis. However, there is no standard tool for detecting protozoa in wildlife. In this study, we developed Meat-Borne-Parasite, a high-throughput meta-barcoding workflow for detecting Apicomplexa based on the Oxford Nanopore Technologies sequencing platform using the 18S gene of 14 Apicomplexa positive samples collected in French Guiana. Sequencing reads were then analysed with MetONTIIME pipeline. Thanks to a scoring rule, we were able to classify 10 samples out of 14 as Apicomplexa positive and reveal the presence of co-carriages. The same samples were also sequenced with the Illumina platform for validation purposes. For samples identified as Apicomplexa positive by both platforms, a strong positive correlation at up to the genus level was reported. Overall, the presented workflow represents a reliable method for Apicomplexa detection, which may pave the way for more comprehensive biomonitoring of zoonotic pathogens.

Abstract Introduction: The Sierra Santa Teresa is located 20 km southeast of Hermosillo in the central region of Sonora state, Mexico. The sedimentary strata mainly correspond to limestone, mudstone, wackestone and packstone texture, from the upper Paleozoic. The biota is represented by crinoids of the morphospecies Baryschyr anosus, Cyclocaudex insaturatus, Floricyclus angustimargo, Cyclocion distictus, Lamprosterigma erathense, Preptopremnum rugosum in association with algae, fusulinid foraminifera, coralline sponges (Chaetetes sp.), solitary corals (Lophophyllidium sp., Fomichevella sp.), fenestellid bryozoans (Archimedes stoyanowi), and brachiopods (Antiquatonia sp.). Objective: The principal aim of this study is to analyze the biotic composition in the Sierra Santa Teresa and its paleoecological and paleogeographical considerations. Methods: In this study we synthetize information about the principal taxa collected in outcrops of the Carboniferous of the Sierra, Santa Teresa. Results: The distribution of the biota, and particularly the crinoid morphospecies, allowed paleobiogeographical correlations to be made with other Mississippian-Pennsylvanian localities of Mexico and different regions of the United States of America in Texas, Colorado, Illinois and Oklahoma, which were located in the southwestern of the North American Craton. Conclusions: It is considered that the paleoenvironment inferred based on the paleontological records of the Sierra Santa Teresa were shallow seas that allowed the development of communities of crinoids, as well as other invertebrates such as coralline sponges, solitary corals, fenestellid bryozoans and brachiopods, with a range stratigraphic from the Middle-Upper Mississippian (Chesterian) to the Middle Pennsylvanian (Desmoinesian).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Anti-N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor encephalitis (ANMDARE) is a neuroimmunological disorder that frequently improves with immunotherapy. Symptomatic treatment with antipsychotics is common in the early stages when psychiatric symptoms predominate, and their use has been associated with serious side effects including neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). The observation of an adverse response to antipsychotics, raising the suspicion of NMS, has been included as a criterion for possible autoimmune psychosis. METHODS: This case-control study included patients who received antipsychotics before referral to the National Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery of Mexico, where they were diagnosed as having definite ANMDARE, and patients with ANMDARE who did not receive antipsychotics before referral. The neurologic and systemic features that are used to measure an adverse response to antipsychotics, raising the suspicion of NMS, were measured in both groups, including akinesia, autonomic instability, generalized rigidity, elevated concentrations of creatine phosphokinase, and hyperthermia. A logistic regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between the previous use of antipsychotics and the occurrence of NMS-like reactions. RESULTS: A total sample of 112 patients with definite ANMDARE were included in the study. Fifty patients received antipsychotics before being referred to our institution. In this group, thirty-six patients (72%) were initially classified as having an adverse response, raising the suspicion of NMS, with the following features: akinesia (64%), autonomic instability (58%), generalized rigidity (52%), elevated concentrations of creatine phosphokinase (50%), and hyperthermia (14%). Six patients fulfilled the criteria for NMS (12%). The comparison with patients who did not receive antipsychotics before the clinical assessment did not show a significant difference between groups regarding the frequency of akinesia, autonomic instability, generalized rigidity, elevated concentrations of creatine phosphokinase, or hyperthermia. Among different antipsychotics, only haloperidol was significantly associated with generalized rigidity as compared to patients who did not receive antipsychotics. CONCLUSIONS: Our study supports previous observations about the high frequency of autonomic dysfunction, hyperthermia, tachycardia, rigidity, and elevated creatine phosphokinase levels in patients with anti-NMDAR encephalitis following the administration of antipsychotic medications. Nevertheless, our study does not suggest a causal link between atypical antipsychotics and the onset of these neurological symptoms, as they were equally frequent among the group of patients who did not receive antipsychotic treatment.

ABSTRACT The Cloud Forest (CF) in central Veracruz, Mexico, represents a landscape that has been altered by anthropic activities. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the evolutionary and adaptive potential of the birds sheltered in the site, which face a landscape with a heterogeneous gradient. The objective of the study was to describe the diversity of birds in fragments of CF and secondary vegetation (VS), in the property "Finca La Pastoría", Huatusco, Veracruz. The species and number of individuals in 14 bird watching sites were identified, with the sampling method based on counting points with a fixed radius of 30 m. 100 species from 33 families and 15 orders were recorded. In the CF, 916 individuals were identified, corresponding to 89 species, and in VS 331 individuals of 54 species, finding significant differences in bird diversity between sampling coverages. The records of Dendrortyx barbatus, Leptotila verreauxi and Vireo griseus stand out for being endemic and classified as endangered and threatened, respectively. Furthermore, Pionus senilis, a threatened species, as well as Falco peregrinus, Micrastur semitorquatus, Passerina ciris, Psarocolius montezuma, Myadestes occidentalis and Amazona albifrons, subject to special protection, were also recorded. This study provides information on how the birds make differential use of two vegetation covers, which can be used to generate sustainable strategies for forest management and conservation.

RESUMEN

Data management "behind the scenes" refers to collection, cleaning, imputation, and demarcation; and despite of being indispensable processes, they are usually neglected and thus, generate erroneous information. During the collection are errors: omission of covariates, deviation from the objective, and insufficient quality. The omission of covariates distorts the result attributed to the main manoeuvre. Deviation from the primary objective commonly occurs when the outcome is rare, delayed, or subjective and promotes substitution by non-equivalent surrogate variables. Moreover, insufficient quality occurs due to inadequate instruments, omission of the measurement procedure, or measurements out of context, such as attribution at the wrong time or equivalent. Furthermore, cleaning implies identifying erroneous, extreme, and missing values, which may or may not be imputed, depending on the percentage. The values of the manoeuvre or the outcome are never imputed, nor are patients eliminated due to a lack of values. Finally, the demarcation of each variable seeks to give it a clinical meaning about the outcome, for which a hierarchical sequence of criteria is followed: 1) previous clinical study, 2) expert agreement, 3) clinical judgment of the investigator/investigators, and 4) statistics. Acting without quality controls in data management frequently causes involuntary lies and confuses instead of clarifying.

Renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is rarely diagnosed during pregnancy and its management represents a challenge as it necessitates considerations for the well-being of both the mother and the developing fetus. Diagnosis can be challenging and is often an incidental finding during routine imaging, which can lead to difficult decision-making. The choice of the ideal imaging study in these cases is a matter of debate. When the tumor is detected at an early stage, radical nephrectomy is indicated. However, there is still controversy regarding whether it should be performed conventionally or laparoscopically, as both techniques have their risks and benefits. In this context, our primary objective was to provide adequate surgical treatment for the patient, while safeguarding fetal health. Here, we present a patient with a history of recurrent miscarriages, in whom a renal tumor was incidentally diagnosed during pregnancy. Adding to the uniqueness of this case, the patient was diagnosed with an eosinophilic variant of chromophobe RCC through histopathological analysis. Our aim is to highlight the controversies surrounding diagnostic and treatment methodologies and to present the surgical techniques employed in this unique situation. This case underscores the importance and need for a multidisciplinary approach, which, in our instance, resulted in favorable outcomes for both maternal and neonatal health.

RESUMEN

In this work, we present a theoretical study on the use of Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 quantum wells in Cu2ZnSnS4 solar cells to enhance device efficiency. The role of different well thickness, number, and S/(S + Se) composition values is evaluated. The physical mechanisms governing the optoelectronic parameters are analyzed. The behavior of solar cells based on Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 without quantum wells is also considered for comparison. Cu2ZnSn(S,Se)4 quantum wells with a thickness lower than 50 nm present the formation of discretized eigenstates which play a fundamental role in absorption and recombination processes. Results show that well thickness plays a more important role than well number. We found that the use of wells with thicknesses higher than 20 nm allow for better efficiencies than those obtained for a device without nanostructures. A record efficiency of 37.5% is achieved when 36 wells with a width of 50 nm are used, considering an S/(S + Se) well compositional ratio of 0.25.

RESUMEN

Chikungunya (CHIK) is a re-emerging viral infection endemic in tropical and subtropical areas. While the typical clinical presentation is an acute febrile syndrome, long-term articular complications and even death can occur. This review characterizes the global epidemiological and economic burden of chikungunya. The search included studies published from 2007 to 2022 in MEDLINE, Embase, LILACS, and SciELO for a thorough evaluation of the literature. Rayyan software was used for data analysis, and data were summarized descriptively and reported following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Seventy-six publications were included. Chikungunya is widely distributed in the tropics, including Africa, Asia, South America, and Oceania/the Pacific Islands, and co-circulates with other simultaneous arboviruses such as DENV, ZIKV, and YFV. Chikungunya infection can lead to chronic articular manifestations with a significant impact on the quality of life in the long term. In addition, it generates absenteeism and economic and social losses and can cause fatal infections in vulnerable populations, mainly in high-risk patients with co-morbidities and at the extremes of age. Reported costs associated with CHIKV diseases are substantial and vary by region, age group, and public/private delivery of healthcare services. The chikungunya disease burden includes chronicity, severe infections, increased hospitalization risks, and associated mortality. The disease can impact the economy in several spheres, significantly affecting the health system and national economies. Understanding and measuring the full impact of this re-emerging disease is essential.

RESUMEN

Studies on the role of the oral microbiome in SARS-CoV-2 infection and severity of the disease are limited. We aimed to characterize the bacterial communities present in the saliva of patients with varied COVID-19 severity to learn if there are differences in the characteristics of the microbiome among the clinical groups. We included 31 asymptomatic subjects with no previous COVID-19 infection or vaccination; 176 patients with mild respiratory symptoms, positive or negative for SARS-CoV-2 infection; 57 patients that required hospitalization because of severe COVID-19 with oxygen saturation below 92%, and 18 fatal cases of COVID-19. Saliva samples collected before any treatment were tested for SARS-CoV-2 by PCR. Oral microbiota in saliva was studied by amplification and sequencing of the V1-V3 variable regions of 16S gene using an Illumina MiSeq platform. We found significant changes in diversity, composition, and networking in saliva microbiota of patients with COVID-19, as well as patterns associated with severity of disease. The presence or abundance of several commensal species and opportunistic pathogens were associated with each clinical stage. Patterns of networking were also found associated with severity of disease: a highly regulated bacterial community (normonetting) was found in healthy people whereas poorly regulated populations (disnetting) were characteristic of severe cases. Characterization of microbiota in saliva may offer important clues in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 and may also identify potential markers for prognosis in the severity of the disease. IMPORTANCE SARS-CoV-2 infection is the most severe pandemic of humankind in the last hundred years. The outcome of the infection ranges from asymptomatic or mild to severe and even fatal cases, but reasons for this remain unknown. Microbes normally colonizing the respiratory tract form communities that may mitigate the transmission, symptoms, and severity of viral infections, but very little is known on the role of these microbial communities in the severity of COVID-19. We aimed to characterize the bacterial communities in saliva of patients with different severity of COVID-19 disease, from mild to fatal cases. Our results revealed clear differences in the composition and in the nature of interactions (networking) of the bacterial species present in the different clinical groups and show community-patterns associated with disease severity. Characterization of the microbial communities in saliva may offer important clues to learn ways COVID-19 patients may suffer from different disease severities.

RESUMEN

Sulfamethazine [N1-(4,6-dimethylpyrimidin-2-yl)sulfanilamide] is an antimicrobial drug that possesses functional groups capable of acting as hydrogen-bond donors and acceptors, which make it a suitable supramolecular building block for the formation of cocrystals and salts. We report here the crystal structure and solid-state characterization of the 1:1 salt piperidinium sulfamethazinate (PPD+·SUL-, C5H12N+·C12H13N4O2S-) (I). The salt was obtained by the solvent-assisted grinding method and was characterized by IR spectroscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, solid-state 13C NMR spectroscopy and thermal analysis [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA)]. Salt I crystallized in the monoclinic space group P21/n and showed a 1:1 stoichiometry revealing proton transfer from SUL to PPD to form salt I. The PPD+ and SUL- ions are connected by N-H+...O and N-H+...N interactions. The self-assembly of SUL- anions displays the amine-sulfa C(8) motif. The supramolecular architecture of salt I revealed the formation of interconnected supramolecular sheets.

RESUMEN

Background: Juvenile-onset Huntington's Disease (JoHD) or Huntington's disease (HD) with age of onset ≤20 years, is a rare clinical entity that often differs phenotypically from adult HD and represents only 1-15% of total HD cases. Objective: To characterize the genetic and clinical characteristics of 32 JoHD patients seen in a Peruvian Neurogenetics clinic from 2000-2018. Methods: This study is a retrospective clinical and genetic review. The clinical database in Lima, Peru was searched for HD patients seen in clinic between 2000 and 2018. Inclusion criteria were: (1) genetically confirmed disease; and (2) HD age of onset ≤20 years, according to the documented medical history. Results: Among 475 patients with genetically confirmed HD in the database, 32 patients (6.7%) had symptom onset at ≤20 years. Among JoHD patients with a known transmitting parent (30 of 32), paternal transmission accounted for 77% of cases. Anticipation was higher with paternal transmission compared to maternal transmission (27.5 ± 11.5 vs. 11.3 ± 7.1 years). Overall expanded CAG repeat length ranged from 44 to 110, with a mean length of 65.6 ± 15.4, and 14 (44%) cases had repeat length under 60. Of the 32 patients included in the study, 25 had detailed clinical symptomatology available, and many patients had unique clinical features such as prominent sleep disturbance (60% of patients), or parkinsonism (73%). Conclusions: This large case series of JoHD patients characterizes the Peruvian JoHD population, reports on unique familial relationships in JoHD, and highlights the varied symptomatic presentation of this rare disease.

RESUMEN

In recent years, both chitosan and ZnO nanostructures have been identified as potential antibacterial substances; however, the potential applications of chitosan adsorbed on ZnO nanowires have not been explored and could offer exciting new perspectives for both materials, for example, in biocompatible electronic circuits. In this work, we investigate the effect of chitosan on the electronic properties of triangular ZnO nanowires (ZnO NWs) from a theoretical perspective. All calculations were performed using density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation. We considered six different positions of the chitosan molecule (CS) on the nanowire surface. We varied the amine position of CS, viewing it parallel, perpendicular, and at a 45° angle with respect to the NW axis. Our results show that all configurations are chemically stable; moreover, the interaction of the NW surface with the OH radical of CS creates flat states within the band gap energy of the ZnO NWs that might resemble p-doping. In addition, these states induce changes in the band gap energy of the ZnO NWs. All NWs show high chemical stability regardless of the CS position; hence, the adsorption results of all NW assemblies appear to be chemically favorable.

RESUMEN

As a result of mining activities, waste of different types is generated. One example is mine tailings that contain potentially toxic elements such as heavy metals that negatively impact the environment and human health. Hence, developing treatments to guarantee its efficient elimination from the environment is necessary. Among these treatments, phytoremediation takes advantage of the potential of different plant species, to remove heavy metals from polluted sites. Gliricidia sepium is a tree that grows up to 15 m high and distributed from southern Mexico to Central America. This study evaluates the heavy metal bioaccumulation capacity in roots and leaves, and the effect of such bioaccumulation on fifteen macro- and one micro-morphological characters of G. sepium growing during 360 days in control, and in mine tailing substrates. G. sepium individuals growing on the exposed substrate registered the following average heavy metal bioaccumulation pattern in the roots: Fe > Pb > Zn > Cu, while in the leaf tissue, the bioaccumulation pattern was Cu > Fe > Pb > Zn. Macro- and micro-morphological characters evaluated in G. sepium decreased in plants exposed to metals. The translocation factor showed that Cu and Pb registered average values greater than 1. In conclusion, G. sepium is a species with potential for the phytoremediation of soils contaminated with Fe, Cu, and Pb, and for phytostabilizing soils polluted with Fe, Pb, Zn, and Cu, along with its ability to establish itself and turn into an abundant plant species in polluted sites, its capacity to bioaccumulate heavy metals in roots and leaves, and its high rate of HM translocation.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Inverse psoriasis affects the skin of flexural areas, such as the groin, axillae, umbilicus, intergluteal fold, and external genitalia. Clinical Case: We herein report the case of a man who presented with anal pruritus and, upon physical examination, a perianal dermatosis was found, which was characterized by erythematous plaques, with fine scaling. The case was initially managed with zinc oxide, and when no improvement was observed, we decided to take an incisional biopsy, which indicated histological changes suggestive of psoriasiform dermatitis. Discussion: Inverse psoriasis affects 3% to 7% of patients with psoriasis, and it manifests with erythematous plaques without the classic scaling appearance. The skin in these areas is susceptible to maceration, irritation, and ulceration, which alter the classic clinical picture. It may present with typical lesions or, less frequently, in isolation in the anogenital region. In the anogenital presentation only, the diagnosis should be made by biopsy, looking for the classic histopathological features of psoriasis. As for the first-line treatment, low- or medium-potency topical steroids are used for short periods of time; the second-line treatment is with emollients and tar-based products; and the third-line treatment uses an immunomodulator. Conclusion: This presentation is infrequent, and it requires a high index of suspicion for the diagnosis, always supported by biopsies, in search of the classic histopathological features of psoriasis. RESUMEN

This work provides a structural analysis of small-scale 3D-printed wind turbine ribs subjected to compression. The ribs were manufactured according to NACA 23015 and NACA 633618 geometries, with polylactic acid (PLA) and polylactic acid with carbon fiber additives (CF-PLA). In addition, holes were manufactured into the sample bodies by either 3D printing or drilling for being compared with solid samples. The compression testing was performed by following the ASTM 695D standard, whereas the beginning and propagation of delamination were assessed with the ASTM 5528 standard. Experimental results revealed that 3D-printed built-in holes provided higher compression strength, hence higher structural efficiency, than the drilled samples. Significant improvement by adding carbon fiber additives into the PLA resin system in comparison to raw PLA was detected for at least one of the studied airfoil profiles. NACA geometries also represented a key parameter for avoiding stress concentration areas, as the FEM modeling supported. However, in damaged areas, fracture mechanisms were observed such as bead-bridging, which is a key parameter in reinforcing and consolidating the specimen bodies. Working in better interphase bonding and different additives between beads and layers is highly suggested for future studies.

Introduction: videoapillaroscopy is a non-invasive method that allows the observation of the microvasculature in the periungual area. Reported results can be highly variable between different observers. Over time, quantitative and semi-quantitative methods emerged to improve reproducibility. Objetives: to know the level of intra and interobserver agreement when reporting the different capillaroscopic patterns in individuals with different levels of training. Materials and methods: cross section study. Specialist rheumatologists and those in training who had previously completed a virtual capillaroscopy training course participated. They received 40 capillaroscopic images projected in a PowerPoint presentation and had to issue their response through a digital questionnaire. Concordance of intra and interobserver responses was evaluated. Results: a high level of global agreement was found with a kappa 0.66 CI 95% (0.63-0.70) p<0.0000, also in other groups such as rheumatologists in training: kappa 0.65 CI 95% (0.60-0.71) p=0.0000, physicians rheumatologists: kappa 0.67 95% CI (0.62-0.72) p=0.0000. Conclusions: the level of agreement found was globally high, regardless of the level of training of the professionals, and whether or not they were a rheumatologist. Concordance was higher when compared to those who had more than 4 years of experience performing videocapillaroscopy.
