BACKGROUND: For patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (mNSCLC), next-generation sequencing (NGS) biomarker testing has been associated with a faster time to appropriate targeted therapy and more comprehensive testing relative to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing. However, the impact on payer costs and clinical outcomes during patients' treatment journeys has not been fully characterized. OBJECTIVE: To assess the costs and clinical outcomes of NGS vs PCR biomarker testing among patients with newly diagnosed de novo mNSCLC from a US payers' perspective. METHODS: A Markov model assessed costs and clinical outcomes of NGS vs PCR testing from the start of testing up to 3 years after. Patients entered the model after receiving biomarker test results and then initiated first-line (1L) targeted or nontargeted therapy (immunotherapy and/or chemotherapy) depending on actionable mutation detection. A few patients with an actionable mutation were not detected by PCR and inappropriately initiated 1L nontargeted therapy. At each 1-month cycle, patients could remain on treatment with 1L, progress to second line or later (2L+), or die. Literature-based inputs included the rates of progression-free survival (PFS) and overall survival (OS), targeted and nontargeted therapy costs, total costs of testing, and medical costs of 1L, 2L+, and death. Per patient average PFS and OS as well as cumulative costs were reported for NGS and PCR testing. RESULTS: In a modeled population of 100 patients (75% commercial and 25% Medicare), 45.9% of NGS and 40.0% of PCR patients tested positive for an actionable mutation. Relative to PCR, NGS was associated with $7,386 in savings per patient (NGS = $326,154; PCR = $333,540) at 1 year, driven by lower costs of testing, including estimated costs of delayed care and nontargeted therapy initiation before receiving test results (NGS = $8,866; PCR = $16,373). Treatment costs were similar (NGS = $305,644; PCR = $305,283). In the PCR cohort, the per patient costs of inappropriate 1L nontargeted therapy owing to undetected mutations were $6,455, $6,566, and $6,569 over the first 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively. Relative to PCR testing, NGS was associated with $4,060 in savings at 2 years and $1,092 at 3 years. Patients who initiated 1L targeted therapy had an additional 5.4, 8.8, and 10.4 months of PFS and an additional 1.4, 3.6, and 5.3 months of OS over the first 1, 2, and 3 years, respectively, relative to those who inappropriately initiated 1L nontargeted therapy. CONCLUSIONS: In this Markov model, as early as year 1, and over 3 years following biomarker testing, patients with newly diagnosed de novo mNSCLC undergoing NGS testing are projected to have cost savings and longer PFS and OS relative to those tested with PCR.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) such as ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini show potential for patient health education, but concerns about their accuracy require careful evaluation. This study evaluates the readability and accuracy of ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini in answering questions about retinal detachment. METHODS: Comparative study analyzing responses from ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini to 13 retinal detachment questions, categorized by difficulty levels (D1, D2, D3). Masked responses were reviewed by ten vitreoretinal specialists and rated on correctness, errors, thematic accuracy, coherence, and overall quality grading. Analysis included Flesch Readability Ease Score, word and sentence counts. RESULTS: Both Artificial Intelligence tools required college-level understanding for all difficulty levels. Google Gemini was easier to understand (p = 0.03), while ChatGPT-4 provided more correct answers for the more difficult questions (p = 0.0005) with fewer serious errors. ChatGPT-4 scored highest on most challenging questions, showing superior thematic accuracy (p = 0.003). ChatGPT-4 outperformed Google Gemini in 8 of 13 questions, with higher overall quality grades in the easiest (p = 0.03) and hardest levels (p = 0.0002), showing a lower grade as question difficulty increased. CONCLUSIONS: ChatGPT-4 and Google Gemini effectively address queries about retinal detachment, offering mostly accurate answers with few critical errors, though patients require higher education for comprehension. The implementation of AI tools may contribute to improving medical care by providing accurate and relevant healthcare information quickly.

The emergence of the Middle Palaeolithic, and its variability over time and space are key questions in the field of prehistoric archaeology. Many sites have been documented in the south-eastern margins of the Massif central and the middle Rhône valley, a migration path that connects Northern Europe with the Mediterranean. Well-dated, long stratigraphic sequences are essential to understand Neanderthals dynamics and demise, and potential interactions with Homo sapiens in the area, such as the one displayed at the Maras rock shelter ("Abri du Maras"). The site is characterised by exceptional preservation of archaeological remains, including bones dated using radiocarbon (14C) and teeth using electron spin resonance combined with uranium series (ESR/U-series). Optically stimulated luminescence was used to date the sedimentary deposits. By combining the new ages with previous ones using Bayesian modelling, we are able to clarify the occupation time over a period spanning 200,000 years. Between ca. 250 and 40 ka, the site has been used as a long-term residence by Neanderthals, specifically during three interglacial periods: first during marine isotopic stage (MIS) 7, between 247 ± 34 and 223 ± 33 ka, and then recurrently during MIS 5 (between 127 ± 17 and 90 ± 9 ka) and MIS 3 (up to 39,280 cal BP).

INTRODUCTION: General Practitioners (GPs) play a key role of gatekeeper, as they coordinate patients' care. However, most of them reported having difficulty to refer patients to hospital, especially in semi-urgent context. To facilitate the referral of semi-urgent patients, we implemented an e-referral platform, named SIPILINK, within 4 wards from a large public French hospital (internal medicine, diabetology, gynaecological surgery and oncology wards). Here, we aimed to evaluate the SIPILINK e-referral platform after 2 years of implementation. METHODS: The evaluation included a multidimensional assessment based on the RE-AIM framework with the analysis of implementation, requests, health professionals' satisfaction, and estimated hospital payment. RESULTS: Over 2 years of implementation, GPs sent 113 requests to hospital. Hospital respected the time of response requested by GPs in 93 % of cases and proposed a consultation or hospitalization in respectively 40.7 % and 10.6 % of cases. 100 % of GPs and 78 % of Hospital Practitioners (HPs) were satisfied with the quality of exchanges. 77 % of HPs and 100 % of Care Pathway Managers (CPMs) found that patient care pathways were improved. Nearly all practitioners would recommend this platform for patient referrals. DISCUSSION: SIPILINK shows promise in streamlining the referral process, enhancing communication, and improving patient care pathways. Further studies including the impact on the quality of care, are needed to assess its effectiveness and sustainability in healthcare settings.

According to a central tenet of classical immune theory, a healthy immune system must avoid self-reactive lymphocyte clones but we now know that B cells repertoire exhibit some level of autoreactivity. These autoreactive B cells are thought to rely on self-ligands for their clonal selection and survival. Here, we confirm that healthy mice exhibit self-reactive B cell clones that can be stimulated in vitro by agonists of toll-like receptor (TLR) 1/2, TLR4, TLR7 and TLR9 to secrete anti-LG3/perlecan. LG3/perlecan is an antigen packaged in exosome-like structures released by apoptotic endothelial cells (ApoExos) upon vascular injury. We demonstrate that the injection of ApoExos in healthy animals activates the IL-23/IL-17 pro-inflammatory and autoimmune axis, and produces several autoantibodies, including anti-LG3 autoantibodies and hallmark autoantibodies found in systemic lupus erythematosus. We also identify γδT cells as key mediators of the maturation of ApoExos-induced autoantibodies in healthy mice. Altogether we show that ApoExos released by apoptotic endothelial cells display immune-mediating functions that can stimulate the B cells in the normal repertoire to produce autoantibodies. Our work also identifies TLR activation and γδT cells as important modulators of the humoral autoimmune response induced by ApoExos.

This study focuses on the development of environmentally friendly Au-Cu2-xS/CuInS2 heteronanotrimers. The chosen strategy relies on the laser photodeposition of a single gold nanodot (ND) onto Janus Cu2- xS/CuInS2 heteronanocrystals (HNCs). This method offers precise control over the number, location, and size (5 to 8 nm) of the Au NDs by adjusting laser power for the career production, concentration of hole scavenger for charge equilibration in redox reactions, and gold precursor concentration, and exposure time for the final ND size. The photoreduction of gold ions onto HNCs starts systematically at the Cu2- xS tip. The Au deposition then depends on the CuInS2 segment length. For short HNCs, stable Au-Cu2- xS/CuInS2 heteronanotrimers form, while long HNCs undergo a secondary photo-induced step: the initial Au ND is progressively oxidized, with concomitant deposition of a second gold ND on the CuInS2 side, to yield Au2S-Cu2- xS/CuInS2-Au heteronanotrimers. Results are rationalized by quantitative comparison with a model that describes the growth kinetics of NDs and Au-Cu2- xS transformation and emphasizes the importance of charge separation in predicting selective deposition in heteronanotrimer production. The key parameter controlling Au-Cu2‒ xS/CuInS2 HNCs is the photoinduced electric field gradient generated by charge separation, which is tailored by controlling the CuInS2 segment size.

BACKGROUND: An increase in Staphylococcus aureus infections has been reported in pediatric patients with cystic fibrosis (CF) over the last few years. This pathogen is commonly treated with vancomycin, an antibiotic for which therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) is recommended. Updated guidelines were recently published regarding new targets of exposure for the TDM of vancomycin through a Bayesian approach, using population pharmacokinetic (popPK) models. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to assess the predictive performance of vancomycin popPK models in pediatric patients with CF and to recommend optimal initial dosing regimens based on simulations. METHODS: Patient data were collected from two centers in Canada, and a literature review was conducted to identify all published vancomycin popPK models for pediatric CF patients. External evaluation and simulations were performed according to patient and occasion of treatment. RESULTS: A total of 53 vancomycin concentrations were collected from six pediatric CF patients. Only two popPK models of vancomycin for pediatric CF patients were identified through the literature review. The external evaluation results for both centers combined revealed a population bias of 28.1% and an imprecision of 33.7%. A re-estimation of parameters was performed to improve predictive performance. The optimal initial dosing regimen was 15 mg/kg/dose administered every 6 hours according to the per occasion remodel. CONCLUSION: The predictive performance and identified optimal initial dosing regimens associated with the model were different depending on the data used, showing external evaluation's importance before implementing a model in clinical practice.

BACKGROUND: In many countries, neuro-muscular blocking agents (NMBAs) are the first cause of perioperative anaphylaxis. Epidemiological studies identified pholcodine, a quaternary ammonium-containing opiate as one of the sensitization sources. However, NMBA anaphylaxis exists in countries where pholcodine was unavailable, prompting the hypothesis of other sensitizing molecules, most likely quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs). Indeed, QACs are commonly used as disinfectants, antiseptics, preservatives, and detergents. Occupational exposure to QACs has been reported as a risk factor for NMBA anaphylaxis, but little is known about the sensitization mechanism and the capacity of these molecules to elicit an immune response. We aimed to establish the immunogenicity of QACs representative of the main existing chemical structures. METHODS: We measured the sensitization potential of seven QACs (two polyquaterniums, three alkyl-ammoniums and two aromatic ammoniums) by using two standard dendritic cells (DCs) models (THP-1 cell line and monocyte derived-dendritic cells). The allergenicity of the sensitizing compounds was further tested in heterologous and autologous T-cell-DC co-culture models. RESULTS: Amongst the seven molecules tested, four could modulate activation markers on DCs, and thus can be classified as chemical sensitizers (polyquaterniums-7 and -10, ethylhexadecyldimethylammonium and benzethonium). This activation was accompanied by the secretion of pro-inflammatory and maturation cytokines. Furthermore, activation by polyquaternium-7 could induce T-cell proliferation in heterologous and autologous coculture models, demonstrating that this molecule can induce a specific CD4+ T cell response. CONCLUSIONS: We provide evidence at the cellular level that some QACs can elicit an immune response, which could be in line with the hypothesis of these molecules' role in NMBA sensitization.

The quality and sensory attributes of juices are influenced by their natural microbiota and the microorganisms found on filtration membranes. This study aimed to assess the influence of natural microbiota and specific contaminants, including Candida krusei, Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, Debaryomyces prosopidis, Ralstonia insidiosa, and Lactiplantibacillus paraplantarum, isolated from cranberry juice and its associated industrial filtration membranes, on the characteristics of cranberry juice. Their growth kinetics and impacts on total phenols, total anthocyanins, total proanthocyanins, total organic acids, pH, titratable acidity, and volatile compounds were assessed. During the 42 h fermentation period, Candida krusei and Ralstonia insidiosa exhibited significant growth, increasing by 1-log and 3-log, respectively. The natural microbiota led to a 7% and 6% reduction in anthocyanins and proanthocyanidins, while Candida krusei and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa caused losses of 10% and 7% in proanthocyanidins, respectively. Organic acid content remained stable, except for an 8% decrease caused by Ralstonia insidiosa. Volatile compounds underwent significant increases, particularly in green (703%), winey (100%), mushroom (306%), and fusel (2678%) notes. These findings underscore the rapid impact of microorganisms from natural microbiota and filtration membranes on cranberry juice characteristics, highlighting the importance for beverage industries to prioritize customer safety and satisfaction.

Some natural environments on Earth are characterised by high levels of radiation, including naturally radioelement enriched mineral springs in the French Massif Central. Therefore, naturally radioactive mineral springs are interesting ecosystems for understanding how bacterial populations in these springs have adapted to high levels of natural and chronic radioactivity over the very long term. The aim of this study was to analyse the bacterial communities of sediments from five naturally radioactive mineral springs in the French Massif Central, sampled in autumn 2019 and spring 2020, and to observe whether radionuclides, compared to other physicochemical parameters, are drivers of the bacterial community structuring in these extreme environments. Physicochemical measurements showed that two springs, Dourioux and Montagne had high radioelement concentrations/activities (uranium, thorium and radon). Analysis of the structure of the bacterial communities, by next generation sequencing based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing, showed that the presence of radionuclides in Dourioux and Montagne, did not lead to a reduction in bacterial diversity and richness compared to the other springs. However, Dourioux and Montagne were characterised by specific bacterial populations, whose presence correlates with the radioelement concentrations/activities measured in these springs. This suggests that radioelements could partly explain the structuring of bacterial communities in these springs. In addition, several of these operational taxonomic units (OTUs) specific to Dourioux and Montagne, mainly affiliated to Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, and Bacteroidetes, could be involved in the biogeochemistry of radionuclides through different mechanisms (biosorption, biomineralisation, bioaccumulation, and bioreduction), which would allow the development of other bacterial species sensitive to these metals/radioelements. In particular, the co-occurrence of sulphate and/or iron-reducing bacteria, capable of bioreducing uranium, with fermentative bacteria, releasing sources of organic carbons, reflects associations of bacteria with complementary functions that allow them to grow in this peculiar environment and maintain a high diversity in these extreme environments. This study has provided a better understanding of the structuring of bacterial communities exposed to ionising radiation for thousands of years in naturally radioactive environments.

Background: Canada has one of the highest incidences of colorectal cancer (CRC) worldwide. CRC screening improves CRC outcomes and is cost-effective. This study compares Canadian CRC screening programs using essential elements of an organized screening program outlined by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Methods: We collaborated with the Cancer Screening in 5 continents (CanScreen5) program, an initiative of IARC. Standardized data collection forms were sent to representatives of provincial and territorial CRC screening programs. Twenty-five questions were selected to reflect IARC's essential elements of an organized screening program. We performed a qualitative analysis of Canada's CRC screening programs and compared programs within Canada and internationally. Results: CRC screening programs exist in 10 provinces and 2 territories. None of the programs in Canada met all the essential criteria of an organized screening program outlined by IARC. Three programs do not send invitations to participate in screening. Among those that do, 4 programs do not include a stool test kit in the invitations. While all provinces met the essential elements for leadership, governance, finance, and access to essential services, there was more heterogeneity in the domains of service delivery as well as information systems and quality assurance. Conclusions: There is considerable heterogeneity in the design of CRC screening programs in Canada and worldwide. Programs should strive to meet all the essential IARC criteria for organized screening if local resources allow, such as issuing invitations and implementing systems to track and compare outcomes to maximize screening program quality, effectiveness, and impact.

Autophagy is a key lysosomal degradative mechanism allowing a prosurvival response to stresses, especially nutrient starvation. Here we investigate the mechanism of autophagy induction in response to sulfur starvation in Saccharomyces cerevisiae. We found that sulfur deprivation leads to rapid and widespread transcriptional induction of autophagy-related (ATG) genes in ways not seen under nitrogen starvation. This distinctive response depends mainly on the transcription activator of sulfur metabolism Met4. Consistently, Met4 is essential for autophagy under sulfur starvation. Depletion of either cysteine, methionine or SAM induces autophagy flux. However, only SAM depletion can trigger strong transcriptional induction of ATG genes and a fully functional autophagic response. Furthermore, combined inactivation of Met4 and Atg1 causes a dramatic decrease in cell survival under sulfur starvation, highlighting the interplay between sulfur metabolism and autophagy to maintain cell viability. Thus, we describe a pathway of sulfur starvation-induced autophagy depending on Met4 and involving SAM as signaling sulfur metabolite.

Introduction: Vitamin C is an essential nutrient. Sex differences in serum vitamin C concentrations have been observed but are not fully known. Investigation of levels of metabolites may help shed light on how dietary and other environmental exposures interact with molecular processes. O-methylascorbate and ascorbic acid 2-sulfate are two metabolites in the vitamin C metabolic pathway. Past research has found genetic factors that influence the levels of these two metabolites. Therefore, we investigated possible effect modification by sex of genetic variant-metabolite associations and characterized the biological function of these interactions. Methods: We included individuals of European descent from the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging with available genetic and metabolic data (n = 9004). We used linear mixed models to tests for genome-wide associations with O-methylascorbate and ascorbic acid 2-sulfate, with and without a sex interaction. We also investigated the biological function of the important genetic variant-sex interactions found for each metabolite. Results: Two genome-wide statistically significant (p value < 5 × 10-8) interaction effects and several suggestive (p value < 10-5) interaction effects were found. These suggestive interaction effects were mapped to several genes including HSD11B2, associated with sex hormones, and AGRP, associated with hunger drive. The genes mapped to O-methylascorbate were differently expressed in the testis tissues, and the genes mapped to ascorbic acid 2-sulfate were differently expressed in stomach tissues. Discussion: By understanding the genetic factors that impact metabolites associated with vitamin C, we can better understand its function in disease risk and the mechanisms behind sex differences in vitamin C concentrations.

Recessive dystrophic epidermolysis bullosa (RDEB) is a rare genetic disease caused by loss of function mutations in the gene coding for collagen VII (C7) due to deficient or absent C7 expression. This disrupts structural and functional skin architecture, leading to blistering, chronic wounds, inflammation, important systemic symptoms affecting the mouth, gastrointestinal tract, cornea, and kidney function, and an increased skin cancer risk. RDEB patients have an extremely poor quality of life and often die at an early age. A frequent class of mutations in RDEB is premature termination codons (PTC), which appear in homozygosity or compound heterozygosity with other mutations. RDEB has no cure and current therapies are mostly palliative. Using patient-derived keratinocytes and a library of 8273 small molecules and 20,160 microbial extracts evaluated in a phenotypic screening interrogating C7 levels, we identified three active chemical series. Two of these series had PTC readthrough activity, and one upregulated C7 mRNA, showing synergistic activity when combined with the reference readthrough molecule gentamicin. These compounds represent novel potential small molecule-based systemic strategies that could complement topical-based treatments for RDEB.

INTRODUCTION: This study sought to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of baloxavir marboxil compared with oseltamivir or no antiviral treatment from a US payer perspective using data from a real-world US administrative claims study. Given baloxavir's ability to rapidly stop viral shedding, the potential health economic implications of a baloxavir-induced population-level reduction in viral transmission was also explored. METHODS: A decision tree cost-effectiveness model was developed for seasonal influenza (2018-2020) using a lifetime time horizon with 3.0% discounting for costs and quality-adjusted life-years (QALYs). Patients aged ≥ 12 years could receive baloxavir, oseltamivir or no antiviral treatment. Patient characteristics, complications, and costs were derived from the Merative™ MarketScan® Research Databases including US commercial claims and Medicare and Medicaid Supplemental databases. A scenario analysis explored the impact of reduced viral transmission with baloxavir. RESULTS: In the base case analysis, baloxavir was cost-effective within a willingness-to-pay threshold of US$100,000/QALY compared with oseltamivir [incremental cost-effectiveness ratio (ICER), $6813/QALY gained] or no antiviral treatment (ICER, $669/QALY gained). The net monetary benefit (NMB) of baloxavir was $1180 and $6208 compared with oseltamivir and no treatment, respectively. The NMB of baloxavir increased linearly with reductions in viral transmission, where a 5% transmission reduction yielded an NMB of $2592 versus oseltamivir and $7621 versus no treatment. Baloxavir became dominant (more effective and less costly, with ICERs < 0) starting with a 12.0% reduction in viral transmission versus oseltamivir and 6.0% versus no antiviral treatment. CONCLUSION: Baloxavir was cost-effective compared with oseltamivir or no antiviral treatment. The potential of baloxavir to reduce viral transmission offers a substantial economic benefit from a US payer perspective.


Baloxavir is a prescription medicine that reduces the duration of flu symptoms and reduces the likelihood of complications from the flu, including serious complications that may require hospitalization. Baloxavir may reduce the spread of the flu to healthy people by reducing the amount and duration of virus shedding from infected people. We designed a model to estimate the cost benefits of using baloxavir versus another flu treatment, known as oseltamivir, or no flu treatment at all. Using baloxavir led to more cost savings than oseltamivir or no treatment for people in the US who have commercial health insurance. Baloxavir was even more cost-effective in the scenario where it reduced the number of flu cases (transmission benefit). This could ultimately have a meaningful benefit across a large health insurance population.

The Aven de la Boucle (Corconne, Gard, southern France) is a karst shaft used as a collective burial between 3600 and 2800 cal BCE. The site encompasses the skeletal remains of approximately 75 individuals comprising a large majority of adult individuals, represented by scattered and commingled remains. To date, few studies have explored the potential of ancient DNA to tackle the documentation of Neolithic collective burials, and the funerary selection rules within such structures remain largely debated. In this study, we combine genomic analysis of 37 individuals with archaeo-anthropological data and Bayesian modelling of radiocarbon dates. Through this multidisciplinary approach, we aim to characterize the identity of the deceased and their relationships, as well as untangle the genetic diversity and funerary dynamics of this community. Genomic results identify 76% of male Neolithic individuals, suggesting a marked sex-biased selection. Available data emphasize the importance of biological relatedness and a male-mediated transmission of social status, as the affiliation to a specific male-lineage appears as a preponderant selection factor. The genomic results argue in favour of 'continuous' deposits between 3600 and 2800 BCE, carried out by the same community, despite cultural changes reflected by the ceramic material.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: To synthesize findings of original articles examining the association between sleep-wake patterns of typically developing infants aged 0-to-18 months and cognitive and psychomotor development. METHODS: A systematic search strategy was used to identify articles assessing the association between infant sleep (0-to-18 months) and cognitive/psychomotor development (Medline, PsycINFO, SCOPUS). Of 7,136 articles screened, 22 articles met inclusion criteria, and the results were subsequently synthesized. A quality assessment was conducted, and studies were categorized as "poor", "fair", or "good". RESULTS: Out of 22 studies, two found exclusively significant associations between infant sleep and cognitive/psychomotor development, three found no significant associations and 17 found mixed results. Studies with exclusively significant results used a single sleep variable and single timepoint designs. Studies finding mixed results or no significant associations used multiple sleep, developmental variables, or multi-timepoint designs. Eight out of 10 studies and seven out of eight studies investigating nocturnal and total sleep duration, respectively, found no significant association with developmental outcomes. While 63% of studies were rated as having good methodological quality, all studies but one had estimated power of less than 0.80. CONCLUSION: Findings of this review do not support conclusive associations between sleep-wake patterns in infancy and cognitive/psychomotor development. This conclusion contrasts with the literature in older populations, questioning if the association between sleep and development is of a different nature in infancy, potentially because of brain maturation. More studies including larger samples will be needed to clarify the presence or absence of such an association.

This study investigated the effect of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) frass derived from BSFL reared on a diet composed of fruit/vegetable/bakery/brewery residues (FVBB diet) and on the Gainesville diet (GV diet) on the development of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici (FOL). Tomato plants were grown in a substrate inoculated with FOL that was amended (10%, v:v) or not (control) with either a commercial compost, pasteurized (70 °C for 1 h) frass from BSFL reared on a FVBB diet, non-pasteurized frass from BSFL reared on a FVBB diet, pasteurized frass from BSFL reared on the GV diet, or non-pasteurized frass from BSFL reared on the GV diet. The results show that frass from BSFL reared on the GV diet, irrespective of pasteurization, inhibited FOL root colonization and reduced the severity of tomato Fusarium wilt to a far greater extent than frass from BSFL reared on a FVBB diet and commercial compost made of peat, seaweed, and shrimps. This study suggests that BSFL frass, depending on the larval rearing diet, has the potential to serve as a pasteurized or non-pasteurized soil amendment with prophylactic properties against FOL in tomato plants, opening new avenues of research for the valorization of BSFL frass.
