RESUMEN

Obesity has become a health crisis in the United States, leading to serious physical, social, and psychological outcomes. Nurses are obese in the same proportion as the general population, which may discredit them as role models of and educators for healthful living.

RESUMEN

Academic incivility remains a problem on college campuses. Nursing research has refocused from student impropriety to aberrant faculty behaviors. Our original study using the Nursing Education Environment Survey showed that 133 of 152 student participants experienced uncivil treatment. Latent, inductive content analysis was undertaken to analyze narratives about their "worst experience" of negative faculty behavior. Four categories were identified: "In front of someone," "Talked to others about me," "Made me feel stupid," and "I felt belittled." Incivility had a profound effect on students and is problematic because it increases already significant academic pressure; it interferes with learning and safe clinical performance; it is contrary to caring, a central nursing concept; and it decreases program satisfaction and retention. Few nursing schools have civility policies for faculty behavior. Formal procedures that promote professional interaction should be crafted and implemented. Equally important is creating ways for nursing students to document incivility without fear of retaliation.

RESUMEN

This study examined the effects of faculty incivility on nursing students' satisfaction with their nursing programs, a topic previously unreported. In addition, incidences of incivility, students' responses to incivility, and academic location of incivility were explored. A high incidence of perceived faculty incivility was reported by participants, and perceived incivility correlated strongly with nursing student program dissatisfaction. Possible causes of incivility in academia and suggestions for addressing this problem are discussed.

RESUMEN

Deficiency of intestinal lactase, the enzyme required for lactose digestion, can result in symptoms of gastrointestinal malabsorption, or lactose intolerance. The knowledge needed for accurate nursing assessment, diagnostic procedural care, teaching, and referral of affected patients is reviewed.

RESUMEN

Ultrasound-assisted drug delivery is a relatively new medical intervention that combines low-intensity ultrasound waves with infusion of a thrombolytic agent directly into a thrombosed vein. Studies have demonstrated that clots are eradicated faster, more completely, and with fewer bleeding events with the use of ultrasound-assisted drug delivery for treatment of deep vein thrombosis compared to that of traditional therapies. Critical care nurses are responsible for preprocedure assessment and teaching and continuous monitoring of the patient during therapy for effectiveness and potential complications. An advantage of this technology from a nursing perspective is the minimal amount of time required for monitoring the drug delivery system, allowing greater focus on patient assessment and care.
