Currently, phage biocontrol is increasingly used as a green and natural technology for treating Salmonella and other infections, but phages exhibit instability and activity loss during storage. Therefore, in this study, the effects of lyophilization on the activity and stability of phage cocktails for the control of multidrug-resistant Salmonella in broiler chickens were determined. Eight serotypes of Salmonella were isolated and identified from broiler chicken farms, and bacteriophages against multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Kentucky, Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Typhimrium and Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis were isolated. The bacteriophage cocktail was prepared and lyophilized, and it was subjected to in vitro and in vivo examinations. A reconstituted lyophilized bacteriophage cocktail was used for the oral treatment of chicks before and after challenge with multidrug-resistant S. Kentucky. The colonization of cecum by S. Kentucky was detected by using real-time PCR, and the serum levels of IgM, IgA and IL-4 and pathological changes in the different groups were detected. Three Caudovirales phages families were identified including Autographiviridae, Straboviridae and Drexlerviridae against multidrug-resistant S. Kentucky, S. Typhimrium and S. Enteritidis. The groups treated with the bacteriophage cocktail showed no clinical signs, no postmortem lesions, and a mortality rate of 0%, which improved the growth performance parameters. Additionally, the estimated serum levels of IgM, IgA and IL-4 were significantly greater in the bacteriophage cocktail-treated groups. Lyophilization effectively preserves the long-term storage stability of phages. Therefore, lyophilized bacteriophage cocktail therapy is a valuable approach for controlling multidrug-resistant Salmonella infections in broiler chickens.

Background: In Saudi Arabia, a traditional therapy for a folk labeled problem known as "Autheem - " is often offered to infants. The procedure involves manipulating an infant's soft palate to alleviate pain associated with infant colic and poor feeding. However, concerns remain about this procedure's impact on infant health and its potential to transmit infections. This study focused on perceptions that Saudi mothers hold about Autheem therapy. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional, community-based study was conducted via an online platform to reach Saudi mothers in the Riyadh region of Saudi Arabia. Results: Five hundred and thirty-six Saudi mothers participated; half were older than 30 years of age. Despite a high rate of college degree attainment, the majority of mothers relied on their elders as a source of information (88.4%). Autheem was viewed to be a stand-alone disease by 86.5% of respondents; 71.4% believed it could not be treated with modern medicine. Most infants were under six months of age when they received Autheem therapy (72%). Roughly 13% of mothers found that their infant had a fever after the therapy; we found an association between Autheem therapy and viral illnesses. About 13% of mothers altered their child's vaccination schedule after Autheem therapy. Conclusion: Older mothers have more positive attitudes towards and stronger beliefs in Autheem therapy than younger mothers. The therapy's strong association with viral illnesses and its negative impact on vaccination schedules are major public health concerns.

Objective: Ankle fracture surgeries among diabetic are common and can have fatal consequences and serious adverse outcomes. A target hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level <8% in all elective surgeries for patients with diabetes is suggested to minimize poor outcomes. We investigated the postoperative outcomes and complications among patients who underwent ankle fracture surgery using HbA1c level as a predictor value. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at King Abdulaziz Medical City between January 2016 and December 2022 on all patients with diabetes who underwent open reduction and internal fixation and who had a documented HbA1c level. Radiological outcomes and complications were noted along with the levels of HbA1c and analyzed statistically. Results: A total of 44 patients were included in the study: 29 women (65.9%) and 15 (34.1%) men. The most frequent ankle fracture type was bimalleolar (54.5%). HbA1c was elevated (54.5%) in patients. A significantly higher proportion of patients who had <8% HbA1c level had radiological union compared to patients who had ≥8% HbA1c level (p = 0.036). Patients who had elevated HbA1c level had more complications although it did not reach statistical significance (p > 0.05). Multivariate regression analysis showed that age and HbA1c level were the significant factors for an uncomplicated and successful ankle surgery. Conclusion: Poor postoperative outcomes and complications are more common among patients with elevated HbA1c. This suggests that an elevated HbA1c level is associated with a poor treatment outcome. Determination of HbA1c levels may predict potential problems post ankle fracture surgery and improve management outcomes.

Acetaminophen (APAP) is one of the most clinically relevant medications associated with acute liver damage. A prolific deal of research validated the hepatoprotective effect of empagliflozin (EMPA); however, its effect on APAP-induced hepatotoxicity has still not been investigated. In this study, the prospective hepatoprotective impact of EMPA against APAP-induced hepatotoxicity was investigated. Twenty-eight Balb-C mice were assigned to four groups: control, APAP, EMPA10/APAP, and EMPA25/APAP. At the end of the experiment, serum hepatotoxicity biomarkers, MDA level, and GSH content were estimated. Hepatic mitofusin-2 (MFN2), optic atrophy 1 (OPA1), dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1), and mitochondrial fission 1 protein (FIS1) were immunoassayed. PGC-1α, cGAS, and STING mRNA expression were assessed by real-time PCR. Histopathological changes and immunohistochemistry of INF-ß, p-NF-κB, and iNOS were evaluated. APAP treatment caused significant hepatic functional impairment and increased hepatic MDA levels, as well as a concomitant decrease in GSH content. Marked elevation in Drp1 and FIS1 levels, INF-ß, p-NF-κB, and iNOS immunoreactivity, and reduction in MFN2 and OPA1 levels in the APAP-injected group, PGC-1α downregulation, and high expression of cGAS and STING were also documented. EMPA effectively ameliorated APAP-generated structural and functional changes in the liver, restored redox homeostasis and mitochondrial dynamics balance, and enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis, remarkably diminished hepatic expression of cGAS and STING, and elicited a reduction in hepatic inflammation. Moreover, the computational modeling data support the interaction of APAP with antioxidant system-related proteins as well as the interactions of EMPA against Drp1, cGAS, IKKA, and iNOS proteins. Our findings demonstrated for the first time that EMPA has an ameliorative impact against APAP-induced hepatotoxicity in mice via modulation of mitochondrial dynamics, biogenesis, and cGAS/STING-dependent inflammation. Thus, this study concluded that EMPA could be a promising therapeutic modality for acute liver toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Synovial sarcoma is a rare soft tissue malignancy, occasionally found in the head and neck region. The diagnosis necessitates a multidisciplinary approach involving the clinical presentation, proper imaging studies and histological confirmation, with molecular testing for definitive identification. Treatment entails surgical resection with adjuvant therapies as needed. CASE PRESENTATION: A 33-year-old male patient presented with globus sensation concomitant with right-sided neck swelling. He was clinically found to have right tonsil enlargement with posterior extension. Therefore, he underwent right tonsillectomy with pharyngoplasty. Histopathological examination revealed a biphasic tumor consistent with synovial sarcoma, confirmed by immunohistochemistry and fluorescence in situ hybridization. CONCLUSIONS: Tonsillar synovial sarcoma represents a diagnostic challenge, requiring a high index of suspicion and comprehensive evaluation. With only twenty previously published cases documented in the literature, awareness of this rare presentation is crucial for prompt diagnosis and appropriate management. Collaboration among multidisciplinary healthcare teams and ongoing research efforts are essential for optimizing diagnostic accuracy, treatment efficacy, and patient outcomes in this rare malignancy.

Luteolin is an essential natural polyphenol found in a variety of plants. Numerous studies have supported its protective role in neurodegenerative diseases, yet the research for its therapeutic utility in D-galactose (D-gal)-induced brain ageing is still lacking. In this study, the potential neuroprotective impact of luteolin against D-gal-induced brain ageing was explored. Forty rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, luteolin, D-gal, and luteolin-administered D-gal groups. All groups were subjected to behavioural, cholinergic function, and hippocampal mitochondrial respiration assessments. Hippocampal oxidative, neuro-inflammatory, senescence and apoptotic indicators were detected. Gene expressions of SIRT1, BDNF, and RAGE were assessed. Hippocampal histopathological studies, along with GFAP and Ki67 immunoreactivity, were performed. Our results demonstrated that luteolin effectively alleviated D-gal-induced cognitive impairment and reversed cholinergic abnormalities. Furthermore, luteolin administration substantially mitigated hippocampus oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuro-inflammation, and senescence triggered by D-gal. Additionally, luteolin treatment considerably attenuated neuronal apoptosis and upregulated hippocampal SIRT1 mRNA expression. In conclusion, our findings revealed that luteolin administration attenuated D-gal-evoked brain senescence, improving mitochondrial function and enhancing hippocampal neuroregeneration in an ageing rat model through its antioxidant, senolytic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptotic impacts, possibly due to upregulation of SIRT1. Luteolin could be a promising therapeutic modality for brain aging-associated abnormalities.

A new eco-friendly sensor, 3-((6-((4-chlorobenzylidene)amino)pyridin-2-yl)imino)indolin-2-one (CBAPI) was synthesized and well characterized. The CBAPI sensor was employed for detecting Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions. It exhibited a low limit of detection at pH 6.0, with values of 2.90, for Zn2+ and 3.59 nmol L-1 for Fe3+ ions. The sensor demonstrated high selectivity over other interfering cations. Additionally, the high binding constants reflect the great affinity of sensor towards Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions. To further validate its quantification ability for Zn2+ ions, the synthesized CBAPI sensor was used to determine Zn levels in human hair samples, and the results were confirmed using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The AGREE metric tool was used to assess the method's environmental impact and practical applicability. These positive outcomes indicated that the new method for detecting Zn2+ and Fe3+ ions is environmentally friendly and safe for humans. The developed CBAPI sensor represents a potential development in metal ion detection, combining sensitivity, selectivity, and rapidity.

Aim: Medication discrepancies are a major safety concern for hospitalized patients and healthcare professionals. Medication Reconciliation (MR) is a widely used tool in different practice settings to ensure the proper use of medications. Objective: This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of the clinical pharmacists-led MR process in identifying, preventing, and resolving medication discrepancies among hospitalized patients. Patients and Methods: This was a prospective study with an observational and interventional part, conducted at the Internal Medicine Department of a tertiary Hospital in Sudan from January to September 2023. The enrolled patients were divided into two groups, the observation group, in which the routine MR process was performed by doctors (usual care), and the intervention group, in which clinical pharmacists led the MR process. Results: Compared to the usual care, the clinical pharmacists were more efficient in identifying and preventing medication discrepancies (P=0.001). From a total of 1012 medications, clinical pharmacists' interventions contributed to the detection of (39%) equivalent to 2.2 discrepancies per patient, resolving 325 (83%) and preventing (55%) clinically significant discrepancies. Dose discrepancy (43%) was the most common type of identified discrepancies. These interventions were accepted by (98%) of doctors and implemented in (86%) of the total cases. The main predictors of medication discrepancies (P ≤0.05) for patients were the length of hospital stay, patient-hospital transfer, high number of medication histories, and increased number of medications used during hospitalization. Conclusion: Through the implementation of the MR process, the clinical pharmacist's interventions substantially contributed to the detection and resolution of medication discrepancies among hospitalized patients. It is recommended that this intervention be disseminated in more hospitals in Sudan to encourage the implementation of appropriate practices.

INTRODUCTION: Kidney transplantation is a definitive treatment for end-stage renal disease. It is associated with improved life expectancy and quality of life. One of the most common complications following kidney transplantation is graft rejection. To our knowledge, no previous study has identified rejection risk factors in kidney transplant recipients in Saudi Arabia. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the specific risk factors of graft rejection. METHODS: A multicenter case-control study was conducted at four transplant centers in Saudi Arabia. All adult patients who underwent a renal transplant between January 1, 2015 and December 31, 2021 were screened for eligibility. Included patients were categorized into two groups (cases and control) based on the occurrence of biopsy-proven rejection within 2 years. The primary outcome was to determine the risk factors for rejection within the 2 years of transplant. Exact matching was utilized using a 1:4 ratio based on patients' age, gender, and transplant year. RESULTS: Out of 1,320 screened renal transplant recipients, 816 patients were included. The overall prevalence of 2-year rejection was 13.9%. In bivariate analysis, deceased donor status, the presence of donor-specific antibody (DSA), intraoperative hypotension, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida, and any infection within 2 years were linked with an increased risk of 2-year rejection. However, in the logistic regression analysis, the presence of DSA was identified as a significant risk for 2-year rejection (adjusted OR: 2.68; 95% CI: 1.10, 6.49, p = 0.03). Furthermore, blood infection, infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa or BK virus within 2 years of transplant, were associated with higher odds of 2-year rejection (adjusted OR: 3.10; 95% CI: 1.48, 6.48, p = 0.003, adjusted OR: 3.23; 95% CI: 0.87, 11.97, p = 0.08 and adjusted OR: 2.76; 95% CI: 0.89, 8.48, p = 0.07, respectively). CONCLUSION: Our findings emphasize the need for appropriate prevention and management of infections following kidney transplantation to avoid more serious problems, such as rejection, which could significantly raise the likelihood of allograft failure and probably death. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to investigate the impact of serum chloride levels prior to transplant and intraoperative hypotension on the risk of graft rejection and failure.

Background Depression is one of the most common mental disorders, which is increasing globally with higher prevalence among women. Many factors contribute to the etiology and risk factors for depression, including biological and psychosocial factors. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of depression among the adult population in Al-Qunfudah governorate, southwestern Saudi Arabia (SA). Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted on a sample of 1036 participants among adults in Al-Qunfudah governorate, southwestern SA, using a validated Arabic version of the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) during the period from October 1st, 2022 to the end of December 2022. The PHQ-9 contains nine items, with a total score ranging from 0 to 27. A score of 1-4 represented minimal depression, while a score of 5, 10, 15, and 20 represented mild, moderate, moderately severe, and severe depression, respectively. The sample size was estimated to be 375 participants, by considering a margin of error of 5%, and a 95% confidence interval, calculated using Raosoft calculator (Raosoft Inc., Seattle, WA). Data collection was performed through an online survey of the PHQ-9 on a Google form and distributed using different social media platforms. The eligible participants' responses were kept confidential and analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 22 (Released 2013; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States). p-values of <0.05 were considered statistically significant.  Results The study showed that the overall prevalence of depression among the 1036 adult study participants was 68.1%. Mild, moderate, moderate to severe, and severe depression was diagnosed among 28.2%, 21.9%, 12%, and 6% of the participants, respectively. Several factors were significantly associated with PHQ-9 diagnosed depression including being younger (p<0.0001), a female (p<0.0001), single (p<0.0001), a student (p<0.0001), and non-employed (p<0.0001) and having a lower educational level (p<0.0001). Conclusions There is a high prevalence rate of depression among the adult population of Al-Qunfudah governorate in southwestern SA, which highlights the need for interventions to address this issue, and to reduce the incidence of depression in the region among the high-risk groups.

BACKGROUND: Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are predisposed to an increased risk of infection signifying the importance of vaccination to protect against its potentially severe complications. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CDC/ACIP) issued immunization re-commendations to protect this patient population. AIM: To assess the adherence of patients with DM to the CDC/ACIP immunization recommendations in Saudi Arabia and to identify the factors associated with the vaccine adherence rate. METHODS: An observational retrospective study conducted in 2023 was used to collect data on the vaccination records from 13 diabetes care centers in Saudi Arabia with 1000 eligible patients in phase I with data collected through chart review and 709 patients in phase II through online survey. RESULTS: Among participants, 10.01% (n = 71) had never received any vaccine, while 85.89% (n = 609) received at least one dose of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine, and 34.83% (n = 247) had received the annual influenza vaccine. Only 2.96% (n = 21), 2.11% (n = 15), and 1.12% (n = 8) received herpes zoster, tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (Tdap), and human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines, respectively. For patients with DM in Saudi Arabia, the rate of vaccination for annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines was higher compared to other vaccinations such as herpes zoster, Tdap, pneumococcal, and HPV. Factors such as vaccine recommendations provided by family physicians or specialists, site of care, income level, DM-related hospitalization history, residency site, hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level, and health sector type can significantly influence the vaccination rate in patients with DM. Among non-vaccinated patients with DM, the most reported barriers were lack of knowledge and fear of side effects. This signifies the need for large-scale research in this area to identify additional factors that might facilitate adherence to CDC/ACIP vaccine recommendations in patients with DM. CONCLUSION: In Saudi Arabia, patients with DM showed higher vaccination rates for annual influenza and COVID-19 vaccines compared to other vaccinations such as herpes zoster, Tdap, pneumococcal, and HPV. Factors such as vaccine recommendations provided by family physicians or specialists, the site of care, income level, DM-related hospitalization history, residency site, HbA1c level, and health sector type can significantly influence the vaccination rate in patients with DM.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common complication of sepsis, contributing to an increased mortality rate. However, some studies have demonstrated that renal function improves in sepsis patients with AKI within 48 hours, raising questions about the necessity for early antibiotic adjustment. This study evaluates the association between the timing of antipseudomonal ß-lactam dose adjustment and the outcomes of critically ill sepsis patients with AKI. Methods: A prospective, multicenter observational study of critically ill patients aged ≥18 years admitted to the intensive care unit with sepsis and AKI and started on antipseudomonal ß-lactam therapy. After the initial dose, eligible patients were grouped as early ß-lactam antibiotic (E-BLA) or late ß-lactam antibiotic (L-BLA) dose adjustments based on the administration of subsequent renally adjusted doses within 24 hours and after 24 hours of sepsis recognition, respectively. The main outcome of interest was in-hospital mortality. Results: Among 1185 patients screened, 224 (mean age, 62.7 ± 16.8 years; 62% were male) met inclusion criteria. Eighty-four and 140 patients were included in the E-BLA and L-BLA groups, respectively. Approximately half of the cohort presented with AKI stage II, and piperacillin-tazobactam was prescribed as initial empirical therapy in more than 50% of the cohort. In the multivariable Cox proportional hazards model, L-BLA was associated with a significant reduction in in-hospital mortality compared to E-BLA (hazard ratio, 0.588 [95% confidence interval, .355-.974]). Conclusions: In sepsis patients with AKI, L-BLA was associated with in-hospital mortality benefits.

This study was divided into two parts. The first part, the determination of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) prevalence in 25 broiler chicken farms, with the detection of multidrug resistant MRSA strains. The prevalence of MRSA was 31.8% (159 out of 500 samples) at the level of birds and it was 27% (27 out of 100) in the environmental samples. The highest antimicrobial resistance of the recovered MRSA strains was recorded to streptomycin (96%). All isolates (100%) had multidrug resistance (MDR) to four or more antibiotics with 16 distinct antibiotic resistant patterns, and multiple antibiotic resistance index (MARI) of 0.4-1. The second part, implementing novel biocontrol method for the isolated multidrug resistant MRSA strains through the isolation of its specific phage and detection of its survival rate at different pH and temperature degrees and lytic activity with and without encapsulation by chitosan nanoparticles (CS-NPs). Encapsulated and non-encapsulated MRSA phages were characterized using transmission electron microscope (TEM). Encapsulation of MRSA phage with CS-NPs increasing its lytic activity and its resistance to adverse conditions from pH and temperature. The findings of this study suggested that CS-NPs act as a protective barrier for MRSA phage for the control of multidrug resistant MRSA in broiler chicken farms.

RESUMEN

DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) represent a unique and complex form of DNA damage formed by covalent attachment of proteins to DNA. DPCs are formed through a variety of mechanisms and can significantly impede essential cellular processes such as transcription and replication. For this reason, anti-cancer drugs that form DPCs have proven effective in cancer therapy. While cells rely on numerous different processes to remove DPCs, the molecular mechanisms responsible for orchestrating these processes remain obscure. Having this insight could potentially be harnessed therapeutically to improve clinical outcomes in the battle against cancer. In this review, we describe the ways cells enzymatically process DPCs. These processing events include direct reversal of the DPC via hydrolysis, nuclease digestion of the DNA backbone to delete the DPC and surrounding DNA, proteolytic processing of the crosslinked protein, as well as covalent modification of the DNA-crosslinked proteins with ubiquitin, SUMO, and Poly(ADP) Ribose (PAR).

Selenium is efficient in reducing the progression of active Graves' orbitopathy and improving life quality. The impact of mending relative deficiency of selenium on improving Graves' orbitopathy is not known, due to the lack of previous measurement of baseline levels of selenium. The study object was to determine whether serum selenium levels are lower in patients with Graves' ophthalmopathy (GO) disease in comparison with those without ophthalmopathy. This prospective case control study was conducted between 2019 and 2021 at the endocrine and ophthalmology clinics, Ain Shams University, Cairo. The study included a total of 75 subjects, 50 patients with Graves' disease (GD) and 25 subjects as a control group. Of the GD patients, 25 had Graves' orbitopathy. Serum selenium concentrations were measured in each group. The mean level of serum selenium was significantly lower in patients with Graves' orbitopathy (16.6 ± 7.5 ng/ml) than in patients with Graves' disease (42.9 ± 8.2 ng/ml) (p < 0.001). Mean selenium levels were reduced with increasing severity of GO, as selenium level was 30-55 ng/ml in GD, 21-28 ng/ml in mild GO, 18-22 ng/ml in moderate GO and 5-16 ng/ml in severe GO (p < 0.001). In conclusion, serum selenium levels were lower in GO patients compared with GD patients in an Egyptian population. Low selenium levels may be a risk factor for ophthalmopathy in Graves' disease patients.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed at using instructional videos in physiology created by students to improve the process of learning Physiology especially during the COVID-19 Pandemic which enforced the lectures to be online. Additionally, it allowed students to visualize and understand clinical scenarios and the physiological reasons behind them while assessing how much they stand to gain from the experience. METHODS: This study is a project to implement FAIMER, ASU MENA-FRI Institute, Cairo, Egypt. In a foundation course for first-year medical students, the instructor utilized a variety of instructional methods including lecture, small group discussion, individual assignments, and reflection. Students were randomly allocated into 18 groups, then a topic in their physiology curriculum was chosen and they formulated a related case scenario, thereafter a video was made by themselves. This intervention was rewarded by activity mark in their course. Post-project questionnaire was used, and an external reviewer evaluated the videos presented by students. This study obtained IRB approval from the Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams Medical Ethics committee. RESULTS: the project helped students to improve their skills in problem-solving, teamwork, active learning, communication, planning, and time management. In addition, it also increased their confidence in their abilities to learn, face unexpected challenges, and achieve goals, while considering new life opportunities, those which became an option when the students searched by themselves and learned more about the different angles of medicine. CONCLUSION: Compared to the traditional lecture format that focuses on memorizing definitions and theoretical structures, instructional videos can be regarded as an innovative teaching tool and a unique medical education method that allowed students to participate more in the learning process even if their lectures were online. This article proposes an active learning method in undergraduate medical education which compensate for limited face-to-face attended during the pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis is a condition in which the body responds improperly to harmful microorganisms and infections, which triggers a chain reaction throughout the body. It is a life-threatening medical emergency. Infections that lead to sepsis, in most cases, start in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. Without timely treatment, sepsis rapidly leads to multi-organ failure and death. The risk factors for sepsis include a weakened immune system, being 65 years of age or older, and chronic medical conditions including diabetes, lung disease, and kidney disease. A thorough understanding of the warning signs and symptoms, as well as prompt medical attention, are required for successful sepsis management. Early detection, antimicrobial therapy, and intensive supportive care are the cornerstones of the best sepsis management. AIM: This study aimed to assess the public awareness and knowledge of sepsis in the Western region of Saudi Arabia. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study conducted from the beginning of June till the end of August 2023, among 425 Saudi adults in the Western region above the age of 18 years. Data collection was carried out by administering a questionnaire through an online platform. The questionnaire included demographic information, risk factors, symptoms, protective factors, and the source of information about sepsis. The data collected were reviewed, coded, and then fed into IBM SPSS Statistics software for Windows, Version 21 (released 2012; IBM Corp., Armonk, NY). RESULTS: The study found that almost half (47.8%) of participants were aware of bacterial septicemia, with the most common sources of awareness being the internet (48.3%) and healthcare professionals (47.8%). Low immunity (75.9%) and infection (39.4%) have been the most frequently reported risk factors. Fever (31.5%) was the most commonly reported symptom. Participants from Yanbu and Jeddah and those in the healthcare sector had significantly higher awareness levels. The majority of participants (93.1%) had poor knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of septicemia, with only 3.4% having fair or good knowledge. Sociodemographic characteristics did not significantly affect knowledge about septicemia (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: In summary, this study reveals that while awareness of bacterial septicemia is relatively high among the sample population, knowledge about the risk factors and symptoms of the condition is low. The internet, healthcare professionals, and social media play significant roles in raising awareness about bacterial septicemia. Participants from Yanbu and Jeddah, students, and healthcare sector workers had higher awareness levels compared to other groups. However, overall knowledge levels regarding bacterial septicemia were poor across various demographic characteristics. This highlights the need for targeted educational interventions to improve knowledge and understanding of septicemia and its risk factors and symptoms among the general population. Further research is needed to identify the reasons for low knowledge levels and develop effective strategies to improve awareness about bacterial septicemia.

Background: Physicians are more likely to examine children than dentists; thus, they may have a significant role in detecting oral and dentofacial problems. This study aimed to determine the rate and comprehensiveness of examinations, the rate and quality of referral practices, and the predictors of referral practice of physicians regarding orthodontic problems among children. Methods: In a multi-center cross-sectional study, a total of 518 physicians in Saudi Arabia were subjected to an e-questionnaire of four sections: (1) Physicians' demographic and work-related characteristics; (2) Physicians' comprehensiveness of oral and orthodontic examinations; (3) Physicians' referral practices to orthodontists and reasons considered for referral; and (4) Physicians' sources of orthodontic education. Logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the significant predictors of referral practice. The significance was set at p < 0.05. Results: Most physicians reported partial oral (78.5%) and orthodontic (72.2%) examinations, while the full examination was reported by only 12% and 2.5% of physicians, respectively. Referral to orthodontists was practiced by most of the physicians (83.8%), yet for the majority of them, the quality of referral was poor (40.3%) or fair (46.1%), with only 13.6% who practiced quality referral. Dental development issues (53.3%) and functional issues (51.5%) were reported as the main reasons for referral, followed by family/patient request (42.9%), dental alignment (42.5%), oral respiratory issues (32.4%), and finally jaw relation (26.1%). Referral practice was predicted by the comprehensive oral (OR = 2.37, p = 0.007) and orthodontic (OR = 4.26, p < 0.001) examinations, number of patients seen by the physician (OR = 1.58, p = 0.007), and level of training (OR = 1.88, p = 0.03). Conclusion: Although most physicians reported high rates of examination and referral practices on orthodontic problems among children in Saudi Arabia, only a small portion showed comprehensive examinations and quality referral practice. Including dental courses in medical curricula and improving oral and orthodontic examination guidelines for physicians are recommended.

Locomotor disorders caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens denote one of the most detrimental issues that collectively threaten the poultry industry leading to pronounced economic losses across the world. Hence, searching for effective alternatives, especially those extracted from plant origins became of great priority targeting a partial or complete replacement of chemical antimicrobials to tackle their developing resistance. Therefore, we aimed to determine the prevalence and antimicrobial resistance of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), Salmonella species, Mycoplasma synoviae (M. synoviae), and Escherichia coli (E. coli) recovered from 500 broilers and ducks (250 each) with locomotor disorders in various farms in Dakahlia and Sharkia Governorates, Egypt. Additionally, we assessed, for the first time, the in vitro antimicrobial effectiveness of marjoram, garlic, ginger and cinnamon essential oils (EOs) against MDR and multivirulent bacterial isolates as well as the in vivo efficiency of the most effective antibiotics and EOs either separately or in combination in the treatment of experimentally induced poultry leg disorders. The overall prevalence rates of S. aureus, E. coli, Salmonella species, and M. synoviae were 54, 48, 36, and 2%, respectively. Salmonella species and S. aureus prevailed among ducks and broilers (36 and 76%, respectively). Notably, MDR was observed in 100, 91.7, 81.1, and 78.5% of M. synoviae, E. coli, Salmonella, and S. aureus isolates, respectively. Our in vitro results displayed that marjoram was the most forceful EO against MDR and multivirulent chicken vancomycin-resistant S. aureus (VRSA) and duck S. Typhimurium isolates. The current in vivo results declared that marjoram in combination with florfenicol or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid succeeded in relieving the induced duck and chicken leg disorders caused by S. Typhimurium and VRSA, respectively. This was evidenced by improvement in the clinical and histopathological pictures with a reduction of bacterial loads in the experimental birds. Our encountered successful in vitro and in vivo synergistic effectiveness of marjoram combined with florfenicol or amoxicillin/clavulanic acid recommends their therapeutic application for leg disorders and offers opportunities for reducing the antibiotics usage in the poultry industry.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to assess the current knowledge of CT radiographers regarding the optimization of CT parameters and their consequential effects on both patient dose and image quality. METHOD: A nationwide, cross sectional study was conducted from the 2nd of January 2023 to 1st of March 2023 to evaluate CT radiographers' knowledge in managing CT parameters in Jordan. Recruitment involved convenience sampling where radiographers were invited to participate and complete the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to report the normalized knowledge scores. Student's t-test and ANOVA were used to investigate and compare the outcomes between different subgroups. A forward stepwise linear regression was used to investigate the influence of a number of technologist related factors on the knowledge score. RESULTS: Three hundred and fifty-seven radiographers participated in the study, with a mean knowledge score of 69.0%. Participants with an academic master's degree had a significantly higher score of 72.1% compared to the ones with a diploma degree, with a score of 66.8% (p = 0.026). No statistically significant difference was found between radiographers that received additional training and the ones that did not. Furthermore, when investigating the effects of academic education, working sector, additional training and years of experience, only education had a statistically significant impact on the knowledge score. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that radiographers have an overall good understanding of CT parameters, with academic education having a significant influence on their performance.
