RESUMEN

During the summer and fall of 1971, epizootic and epidemic Venezuelan equine encephalitis was detected in Texas. Isolates of epizootic (IB) and vaccine (TC-83) strains were distinguished by virulence of the former for guinea pigs. Vaccine virus was isolated from 1 to 14 days after vaccination and neutralization tests demonstrated the appearance of antibody about a week after vaccination. Viremia titers of subtype IB in horses ranged from 2.2 to 8.3 log10 suckling mouse intracranial 50% lethal doses per ml. Of 101 equines from which Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (IB or TC-83) strains were isolated, 87 had no neutralizing antibody against Venezuelan, eastern or western equine encephalitis viruses.

RESUMEN

Mice were inoculated with St. Louis encephalitis (SLE), Flanders (FLAN), California (CE), or Tensaw (TEN) viruses. At fixed intervals after inoculation, brains from these mice were collected and assayed for infective virus and complement-fixing, hemagglutinating, and precipitating antigens. Detectability of these antigens was correlated with the appearance of signs of illness in the mice. Infective virus appeared 64, 48, 48, and 40 hr before signs of illness and 90, 86, 64, and 56 hr before death in mice inoculated with SLE, FLAN, CE, and TEN viruses, respectively. Diagnostic antigens were also detected well before signs of illness appeared. These findings were applied to the isolation of viruses from field-collected specimens. It was shown that by harvesting tissues at appropriate intervals these viruses could be detected and identified more rapidly than by conventional techniques with mice.

RESUMEN

A double diffusion-in-agar test was used to investigate precipitation reactions of 75 arboviruses. Specific reactions were regularly observed with members of arbovirus groups B, California, Simbu, Turlock, Hart Park, vesicular stomatitis, and several other arboviruses as well as with a member of the Tacaribe group and a herpesvirus. The results demonstrated the feasibility of applying this technique to the identification of arboviruses.
