RESUMEN

In this paper, we propose a new ultrafast layer based CGH calculation that exploits the sparsity of hologram fringe pattern in 3-D object layer. Specifically, we devise a sparse template holographic fringe pattern. The holographic fringe pattern on a depth layer can be rapidly calculated by adding the sparse template holographic fringe patterns at each object point position. Since the size of sparse template holographic fringe pattern is much smaller than that of the CGH plane, the computational load can be significantly reduced. Experimental results show that the proposed method achieves 10-20 msec for 1024x1024 pixels providing visually plausible results.

RESUMEN

In computer-generated hologram (CGH) calculations, a diffraction pattern needs to be calculated from all points of a 3-D object, which requires a heavy computational cost. In this paper, we propose a novel fast computer-generated hologram calculation method using sparse fast Fourier transform. The proposed method consists of two steps. First, the sparse dominant signals of CGHs are measured by calculating a wavefront on a virtual plane between the object and the CGH plane. Second, the wavefront on CGH plane is calculated by using the measured sparsity with sparse Fresnel diffraction. Experimental results proved that the proposed method is much faster than existing works while it preserving the visual quality.

RESUMEN

Stereoscopic images could have asymmetric distortions caused by image processing in capture, synthesis, and compression of them. In 3D perception in stereoscopic display, the visibility threshold of the asymmetric distortions in the left and right images is important, which is tolerable to the human visual system. In this paper, we investigate the effect of the binocular disparity on the visibility threshold of asymmetric noises in stereoscopic images via subjective assessments. Existing just-noticeable-difference (JND) models for stereoscopic images have not taken into account the effect of the disparity in stereoscopic viewing. In this paper, we subjectively assessed the visibility threshold of asymmetric noises in stereoscopic images according to the disparity. Subjective evaluations showed that large disparity magnitudes could make more tolerable to perceive the asymmetric noises in the stereoscopic viewing.

RESUMEN

Stereoscopic displays provide viewers with a truly fascinating viewing experience. However, current stereoscopic displays suffer from crosstalk that is detrimental to image quality, depth quality, and visual comfort. In order to reduce the perceived crosstalk in stereoscopic displays, this paper proposes a crosstalk reduction method that combines disparity adjustment and crosstalk cancellation. The main idea of the proposed method is to displace the visible crosstalk using the disparity adjustment in a way that less amounts of intensity leakage occur on perceptually important regions in a scene. To this purpose, we estimate a crosstalk visibility index map for the scene that represents pixel-by-pixel importance values associated with the amount of perceived crosstalk and negative-after-effects of the crosstalk cancellation. Based on the crosstalk visibility index, we introduce a new disparity adjustment method that reduces the annoying crosstalk in processed images, which is followed by the crosstalk cancellation. The effectiveness of the proposed method has been successfully evaluated by subjective assessments of image quality and viewing preference. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method effectively improves the image quality and overall viewing quality of stereoscopic videos.
