RESUMEN

Three male Poodles (two Toy, one Miniature) were presented to their veterinarians for evaluation of urolithiasis and varying degrees of hepatic encephalopathy. All three dogs were diagnosed as having intrahepatic shunts and referred for surgical correction. In each case, shunts arose from the right branch of the portal vein and were amenable to perivascular dissection caudal to where the vessel entered the hepatic parenchyma and to placement of perivascular cellophane bands to achieve shunt attenuation. During the same period, a female Miniature Poodle also presented for treatment of a congenital portosystemic shunt discovered during evaluation for generalised motor seizures. This animal had an extrahepatic portoazygous shunt that was completely ligated. Congenital portosystemic shunts have not previously been identified in Toy and Miniature Poodles at the University Veterinary Centre, Sydney and the anatomical types of shunt seen in this breed have not previously been reported in a consecutive series of cases. The three male dogs are noteworthy for a number of reasons: all had intrahepatic shunts, despite being small breed dogs; all three presented in a similar fashion, and all had shunts of an anatomical type amenable to placement of cellophane bands. One male dog died within 12 hours of surgery, the remaining three dogs survived and their liver function was normal at follow-up between 2 and 3 months after surgery. Use of cellophane bands for successful attenuation of intrahepatic shunts has not been previously reported.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between physical signs of elbow dysplasia and radiographic appearance of the elbow joints in growing dogs. DESIGN: Prospective study. ANIMALS: 55 Rottweiler pups. PROCEDURE: Owners of clinically normal Rottweiler pups were contacted through breed clubs in 3 Australian states and asked to participate in the study. All those offering to participate were included. PROCEDURE: The first physical examination was performed when pups were 3 months old and included a lameness evaluation and palpation of the elbow joints. Physical examinations were repeated when pups were 5, 6, 9, and 12 months old. Radiographs of the elbows were obtained at 6 and 12 months. Relationships among lameness, decreased range of movement, signs of pain, and radiographic data related to elbow dysplasia were examined. RESULTS: Elbow dysplasia caused clinical lameness in only 3 dogs but 57% of dogs developed radiographic signs of elbow dysplasia by 12 months of age. A grade-2 radiographic score at 12 months of age was significantly associated with clinical elbow dysplasia. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Elbow dysplasia has a prevalence of > 50% in certain breed populations. This study supports radiographic screening at 12 months of age, accompanied by physical examination to detect clinical elbow dysplasia.

RESUMEN

Fracture-luxations of the seventh lumbar vertebrae in two large dogs were stabilised with bone screws and methylmethacrylate. Screws inserted bilaterally into the bodies of the lumbar vertebrae and ilial wings were left protruding by about 2 cm, and embedded in methylmethacrylate bone cement. Implant failure occurred in one dog six days after surgery, necessitating a revision of the fixation. Fracture healing and return of normal ambulation occurred in both dogs. Implants were removed in one dog because of screw loosening and discomfort.

RESUMEN

A group of 55 rottweiler pups was studied from three to 12 months old to assess the incidence and clinical significance of disease involving the palmar metacarpal sesamoid bones. The results of physical examination were correlated with clinical signs of lameness and the results of radiographic examination of the forefeet. Twenty-one dogs became lame during the study and in 12 of them the lameness was attributable to sesamoid disease. However by 12 months of age, the incidence of sesamoid disease as assessed by radiographic changes in the sesamoid bones was 73 per cent (30 of 41 dogs). Six of the 12 dogs which were lame owing to sesamoid disease got better without specific treatment. It was concluded that sesamoid disease can result in clinical lameness in young rottweilers, but that subclinical disease is common.

RESUMEN

Ten male and 4 female dogs with chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy were seen at the Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital in the period 1982-88. The most commonly affected breeds were the Shihtzu and Maltese. The mean age was 8.2 yr and the mean body weight 6.5 kg. The most common clinical signs were vomiting, weight loss, polydipsia and depression. Hypokalaemia was present in 11 of 12 dogs examined and hypochloraemia in 10 of 11 dogs examined. Five of the six dogs that had blood gases measured were found to have a metabolic alkalosis. Surgery was performed on 13 dogs; pyloromyotomy 7, pyloroplasty 4, gastroduodenostomy 2. There was a recurrence of symptoms in one pyloromyotomy dog, and fatal ulceration and perforation of the cardia occurred in one pyloroplasty case. The remaining 11 dogs had a mean known symptom-free survival time of 20 mo. This study confirms the preponderance of affected males, identifies electrolyte and blood gas disturbances as significant complication of chronic hypertrophic pyloric gastropathy, and suggests that relatively minor surgery (pyloromyotomy) may have a place in the treatment of a selected subgroup of cases.
