Simultaneous two-color flow cytometry of lysed whole blood allows the collection of maximal information from minimal blood volumes. This method was used for prenatal diagnosis of severe combined immunodeficiency by analysis of fetal blood. The data demonstrate that flow cytometry of lysed whole blood provides a reliable tool for prenatal diagnosis of certain immunodeficiencies. Moreover, the method described seems highly suitable for immunological monitoring of preterm infants and newborns. To enable the diagnosis of more subtle immunodeficiency states in these patients, however, valid normal values for all investigated parameters need to be defined first for the respective age/weight groups.

A case report is presented here on the rare osteoclastoma of the pancreases which was observed in a patient with pancreas divisum. The leading symptom was recurrent bleeding from Santorin's duct (Santorinorrhage).

Cosmetic aspects often are the indication for operation in funnel chest or pigeon breast. Cardial or respiratory symptoms are only noticed in a few patients. The operative procedure according to Brunner is technically a simple method with low risk, which reaches good cosmetic and long-term results (the recurrence rate is 16,6%). Because of the higher recidivation liability after surgery in early childhood, we recommend surgical correction of the chest wall deformities after the age of 12.

The importance of emergency ligation in the treatment of massive bleeding esophageal varices is compared with other procedures in treatment like sclerotherapy of esophageal wall and emergency shunt. Lethality depends decisive on the stadium of liver cirrhosis.

Records of 151 patients from the years 1964--1979 with anastomotic ulcers including relapses of ulcers after vagotomy reveal a total lethality of 3.3 per cent after reoperation. Re-gastrectomy with or without additional vagotomy shows a lethality of 5.7 per cent. If vagotomy alone is carried out there were no lethality and nearly no serious complications. Gastrectomy because of recurrent peptic ulcer after primary vagotomy has also no lethality. With regard to less serious postoperative complications including lethality after vagotomy instead of re-gastrectomy we should favour vagotomy for re-operation. Our further examinations will show whether this attitude is justified by long-term results after re-operation of the stomach in consequence of recurrent pepti ulcer.

The results of surgical treatment of 295 resected peripheral carcinomas of the lung were analysed by tumor staging and histology. 89 cases of scar cancer of the lung have been compared to 206 peripheral cancers. The overall 5-year survival rate was far less in the peripheral lung cancer group (24%). Best prognosis had patients with tumors without lymph node metastasis or adenocarcinoma in the scar (39--45%). These tumors tend to be slowly progressive and metastasize late. When early characteristic signs can be seen on x-ray examination, lung scars should be followed carefully.

The report concerns two female patients who had taken contraceptives for a period of eight to ten years and were found to have benign liver-cell-tumor. The possibility of liver-cell-tumor induced by oral contraceptives is discussed with regard to the literature.
