The manuscript covers the classification, mechanisms, and management of arrhythmias in women, considering factors such as pregnancy and menopause. By addressing these gender-specific nuances, it aims to improve healthcare practices and outcomes for female patients with cardiac rhythm disorders.


Esta revisión explora las disparidades de género en la electrofisiología cardiaca, destacando las diferencias en la actividad eléctrica del corazón entre hombres y mujeres. Se enfatiza la importancia de comprender estas variaciones para un diagnóstico correcto y un tratamiento efectivo de las arritmias cardiacas. Las mujeres muestran características cardiacas distintas influenciadas por las hormonas sexuales, lo que afecta su susceptibilidad a diversas arritmias. La revisión abarca la clasificación, los mecanismos y el manejo de las arritmias en las mujeres, considerando factores como el embarazo y la menopausia. Al abordar estos matices específicos de género, el objetivo es mejorar las prácticas de atención médica y los resultados para las pacientes de sexo femenino con trastornos del ritmo cardiaco.

Traboulsi syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by facial dysmorphism, lens subluxation, anterior segment anomalies, and spontaneous filtering blebs. The syndrome is due to mutations in the ASPH gene, which plays a crucial role in the development and maintenance of the lens. This case report describes the clinical and genetic findings in a Mexican male with Traboulsi syndrome, highlighting the identification of a novel ASPH variant. A 21-year-old male presented with trauma to the right eye while playing soccer. He had a history of lens subluxation and dysmorphic facial features. Ophthalmic examination revealed right eye lens subluxation into the anterior chamber (with signs of a previous episode of acute angle closure) and left eye posterior and inferior lens subluxation with sectorial iris atrophy. Genetic analysis identified a pathogenic ASPH variant (NM_004318.3:c.1892G>A, p.Trp631*) and a novel likely pathogenic variant (deletion of exons 20-21), confirming Traboulsi syndrome. This is the first instance of Traboulsi syndrome in the Mexican population. The absence of spontaneous filtering blebs in this patient supports previous reports of the wide phenotypic variability that could be related to the type of mutation. This novel ASPH variant expands the known genetic heterogeneity of Traboulsi syndrome.

The quest for enhancing the upconversion luminescence (UCL) efficiency of rare-earth doped materials has been a common target in nanophotonics research. Plasmonic nanoarchitectures have proven potential for amplifying UCL signals, prompting investigations into localized enhancement effects within noble metal nanostructures. In this work we investigate the localized enhancement of UCL in silver nanowire (AgNW) networks coated with upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) by employing hyperspectral microscopy to unveil distinctive regions of local enhancement. Our study reveals that three-photon upconversion processes predominantly occur at hot-spots in nanowire junctions, contributing to heightened luminescence intensity on AgNW networks. Intriguingly, our findings demonstrate that enhancement on AgNWs introduces significant artifacts for thermometry based on ratiometric analysis of the emission spectra, resulting in the observation of artificial thermal gradients. To address this challenge, we developed correction methods that were successfully applied to mitigate this effect, enabling the generation of accurate thermal maps and the realization of dynamic thermal measurements. We quantified the distance-dependent enhancement profiles and studied the effect of temperature by exploiting the heat dissipation under varying electrical voltages across the electrically percolated AgNW networks. The observations were confirmed through numerical calculations of the enhancement factor and the energy transfer rates. This comprehensive investigation sheds light on the complex interplay between plasmonic nanostructures, three-photon upconversion processes, and their influence on thermal sensing applications. The presented hyperspectral method not only allows a direct visualization of plasmonic hot-spots but also advances our understanding of localized enhancements. The correction methods applied to analyze the emission spectra also contribute to the refinement of accurate temperature mapping using UCNPs, thereby enhancing the reliability of this thermal sensing technology.

A series of novel 4-acetyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole derivatives was designed and synthesized for their biological evaluation in vitro against Trypanosoma cruzi (T. cruzi) and Leishmania mexicana (L. mexicana). Additionally, all compounds were evaluated by molecular docking on the cruzain of T. cruzi (TcCz) and the cysteine protease B (CPB) of L. mexicana (LmCPB) to know their potential mechanism of binding. Compound OX-12 had better trypanocidal activity against NINOA (IC50=10.5 µM) and A1 (IC50=21.7 µM) T. cruzi strains that reference drug benznidazole (IC50=30.3 µM and 39.8 µM, respectively). Compound OX-2 had the best biological activity against L. mexicana in M379 (IC50=11.9 µM) and FCQEPS (IC50=34.0 µM) strains that the reference drug glucantime (IC50>120 µM). All the compounds showed important interactions with residues on the active site of TcCz (Gly66, Trp26, Leu67, and Ala138) and LmCPB (Gly67, Asn62, Leu68, and Ala140). Finally, the molecular dynamics simulations of the compound OX-12 shown moderate stability from 40-115 ns with an RMSD value of 6.5 Å. Meanwhile, compound OX-2 showed a minor stability in complex with CPB from 25-200 ns of simulation (RMSD<9 Å). These results encourage to develop more potent and efficient trypanocidal and leishmanicidal agents using the 1,3,4-oxadiazole scaffold.

Latin America faces a significant public health challenge due to the high prevalence of obesity and its associated diseases. Metabolic and bariatric surgery is effective and safe to treat obesity when other treatments fail; however, its implementation in Latin America remains unsatisfactory. This review explores the current status, challenges, and innovations of metabolic and bariatric surgery in Latin America. We searched peer-reviewed journals in English and Spanish for relevant articles published between 1998 and 2023. We found that more than 20% of the Latin American population is affected by obesity. Unfortunately, only a limited number of patients have access to metabolic and bariatric surgery due to high cost, limited availability, and shortage of specialists. The review found that ongoing clinical trials are being conducted in Brazil, Mexico, Chile, and Venezuela, indicating some regional progress. However, published studies remain low in number compared with other regions. Furthermore, we summarized the clinical outcomes, risks, and perioperative assessments associated with metabolic and bariatric surgery. We discussed potential strategies to enhance the availability and affordability of this intervention. This review emphasizes the significance of metabolic and bariatric surgery in addressing the obesity pandemic, specifically for Latin America, and proposes directions for future research and innovation.

Resumen Introducción : La calcifilaxis es un trastorno vascular grave caracterizado por depósito de calcio en túnica me dia arteriolar, trombosis y necrosis cutánea. Se describió en pacientes con insuficiencia renal (CU), aunque puede producirse en su ausencia (CNU). Sus factores de riesgo están en estudio y su diagnóstico puede ser complejo. Su mortalidad se estimaba en 60-80%, aunque trabajos recientes indican que ha disminuido (40%). Métodos : Estudio retrospectivo entre el 1/1/2011 y el 31/12/2019. Se revisaron los antecedentes, las ca racterísticas clínicas, los hallazgos de laboratorio e histopatológicos, y la evolución de todos los pacientes con diagnóstico de calcifilaxis evaluados en el Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires. Resultados : Se incluyeron 39 pacientes. El 61.5% (24) eran hombres y 38.5% (15) fueron casos de CNU. De éstos, 82% presentaba hipertensión arterial, 66% obesidad y 46% diabetes. El 49% recibía anticoagulantes dicumarínicos. Todos los pacientes con CNU y 75% con CU presentaron úlceras de fondo necrótico, localizadas con mayor frecuencia en las piernas. En 72% de los casos el diagnóstico histológico se efectuó con una toma de biopsia. En todos, el tratamiento fue multimodal y la mortalidad al año fue de 42%. Conclusión : Observamos una elevada proporción de pacientes con CNU, en relación con lo comunicado en la literatura, y la mitad recibía anticoagulantes di cumarínicos. El diagnóstico histológico se efectuó por biopsia en la mayor parte de los casos, para lo cual la toma quirúrgica de la muestra, la tinción con Von Kossa y la evaluación por un patólogo experto fueron claves.

In 72% of the cases the histological diagno sis was made with one biopsy. In all the treatment was multimodal and mortality at one year was 42%. Conclusion : We observed a high proportion of pa tients with NUC, in relation to what is reported in the literature, and that half received vitamin K antagonists. The histological diagnosis was made with one biopsy in most of the cases, as the surgical technique for taking the sample, the Von Kossa staining and the evaluation by an expert pathologist were the key of it.

Despite the prevalence of substance use during pregnancy, studies focusing exclusively on Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICU) admissions remain limited. This study investigates the impact of maternal use of tobacco, alcohol, and/or crack, on neonatal outcomes among infants admitted to three Brazilian NICUs. Additionally, the investigation explores the impact of substance use on DNA damage in newborns. Over a one-year period, data from 254 newborns were collected through medical records, accompanied by blood samples. Findings revealed that 16.1% of newborns had mothers reporting substance use during pregnancy. Significant associations were found between maternal substance use and adverse neonatal outcomes, including low birth weight, preterm birth, and sexually transmitted infections. Maternal variables linked to substance use encompassed non-white skin color, low education, non-masonry housing, lower income, diseases in other children, and fewer prenatal consultations. Notably, neonatal DNA damage showed no significant association with substance use. Our results underscore the substantial impact of maternal substance use on NICU-admitted infants, emphasizing the necessity for targeted interventions that address both neonatal health and maternal well-being, thereby underscoring the crucial role of comprehensive care in NICU settings.

The failure rate of restaurants is high in many countries, primarily because of the complex relationships between services and customers. Therefore, improving restaurant customer experience is a significant challenge for entrepreneurs. This multi-dimensional experience encompasses several aspects that may or may not be related to food consumption. Many restaurant owners can avoid bankruptcy if they understand theories of service quality and the factors involved. The objective of this research is to identify and summarize known important factors that lead consumers to choose, patronize or be satisfied with a restaurant. The research question for this review is: What are the important factors that influence consumers (population) to choose, patronize, or be satisfied with a restaurant  (outcome)? Therefore, we conducted an integrative review to address this question. We included 111 studies and identified 117 factors/indicators related to consumer satisfaction and restaurant choices. First, we grouped these factors into four categories based on the Big Four restaurant attributes: atmosphere, food, service, and price & value. Four categories emerged based on consumer- and business-related aspects: behavioral intentions, values and beliefs, experiences, and companies. The "food" category is the most important factor in consumer choice and experience. However, the importance of this category may vary depending on the situation (e.g., lunch, dinner, weekends, weekdays) and should be carefully considered, as all categories were relevant but intricate. Such factors are associated with many positive outcomes, such as satisfaction, loyalty, brand love, patronization, and intent to visit and revisit.

The mosquito Aedes spp. holds important relevance for human and animal health, as it serves as a vector for transmitting multiple diseases, including dengue and Zika virus. The microbiome's impact on its host's health and fitness is well known. However, most studies on mosquito microbiomes have been conducted in laboratory settings. We explored the mixed microbial communities within Aedes spp., utilizing the 16S rRNA gene for diversity analysis and shotgun metagenomics for functional genomics. Our samples, which included Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, spanned various developmental stages-eggs, larvae, and adults-gathered from five semiurban areas in Mexico. Our findings revealed a substantial diversity of 8,346 operational taxonomic units (OTUs), representing 967 bacterial genera and 126,366 annotated proteins. The host developmental stage was identified as the primary factor associated with variations in the microbiome composition. Subsequently, we searched for genes and species involved in mosquito biocontrol. Wolbachia accounted for 9.6% of the 16S gene sequences. We observed a high diversity (203 OTUs) of Wolbachia strains commonly associated with mosquitoes, such as wAlb, with a noticeable increase in abundance during the adult stages. Notably, we detected the presence of the cifA and cifB genes, which are associated with Wolbachia's cytoplasmic incompatibility, a biocontrol mechanism. Additionally, we identified 221 OTUs related to Bacillus, including strains linked to B. thuringiensis. Furthermore, we discovered multiple genes encoding insecticidal toxins, such as Cry, Mcf, Vip, and Vpp. Overall, our study contributes to the understanding of mosquito microbiome biodiversity and metabolic capabilities, which are essential for developing effective biocontrol strategies against this disease vector.

Microplastic (MP) accumulation in the environment is accelerating rapidly, which has led to their effects on both the ecosystem and human life garnering much attention. This study is the first to examine the degradation of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) MPs via photoelectrocatalysis (PEC) using a TiO2-modified boron-doped diamond (BDD/TiO2) photoanode. This study was divided into three stages: (i) preparation of the photoanode through electrophoretic deposition of synthetic TiO2 nanoparticles on a BDD electrode; (ii) characterization of the modified photoanode using electrochemical, structural, and optical techniques; and (iii) degradation of HDPE MPs by electrochemical oxidation and photoelectrocatalysis on bare and modified BDD electrodes under dark and UV light conditions. The results indicate that the PEC technique degraded 89.91 ± 0.08% of HDPE MPs in a 10-h reaction and was more efficient at a lower current density (6.89 mA cm-1) with the BDD/TiO2 photoanode compared to electrochemical oxidation on bare BDD.

Trypanosomatids, including Trypanosoma and Leishmania species, present significant medical and veterinary challenges, causing substantial economic losses, health complications, and even fatalities. Diagnosing and genotyping these species and their genotypes is often complex, involving multiple steps. This study aimed to develop an amplicon-based sequencing (ABS) method using Oxford Nanopore long-read sequencing to enhance Trypanosomatid detection and genotyping. The 18S rDNA gene was targeted for its inter-species conservation. The Trypanosomatid-ABS method effectively distinguished between 11 Trypanosoma species (including Trypanosoma evansi, Trypanosoma theileri, Trypanosoma vivax, and Trypanosoma rangeli) and 6 Trypanosoma cruzi discrete typing units (TcI to TcVI and TcBat), showing strong concordance with conventional methods (κ index of 0.729, P < 0.001). It detected co-infections between Trypanosomatid genera and T. cruzi, with a limit of detection of one parasite per mL. The method was successfully applied to human, animal, and triatomine samples. Notably, TcI predominated in chronic Chagas samples, whereas TcII and TcIV were found in the acute stage. Triatomine vectors exhibited diverse Trypanosomatid infections, with Triatoma dimidiata mainly infected with TcI and occasional TcBat co-infections, and Rhodnius prolixus showing TcI and TcII infections, along with T. rangeli co-infections and mixed TcII infections. Animals were infected with T. vivax, T. theileri, and T. evansi. The ABS method's high resolution, sensitivity, and accuracy make it a valuable tool for understanding Trypanosomatid dynamics, enhancing disease control strategies, and enabling targeted interventions.

RESUMEN

A new practical method has been developed for the α-heteroarylation of aliphatic nitriles with heteroarenes and azobis(alkylcarbonitriles) using Cu(OAc)2 as an oxidizing agent. This method allows the easy construction of nitrile-, aryl-, and dialkyl-bearing quaternary carbon centers from readily available building blocks, without requiring prefunctionalization steps. This reaction is based on adding cyanodialkyl radicals onto heteroarenes, including benzofurans, furans, pyrroles, and indoles. The resulting α-heteroaryl nitriles are useful synthetic intermediates and pharmacophores in biologically active molecules.

Cocoa is an economically important product in Colombia. On-farm germplasm evaluations enable the selection of superior genotypes for propagation and distribution across the country. This study examined 12 cocoa samples from Antioquia along with five reference materials, employing 96 single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. Furthermore, these genetic findings were correlated with physical, chemical, and sensory attributes. Primary coordinate analysis revealed that the majority of samples were hybrids derived from five original germplasm pools, including Criollo, Amelonado, and three Upper Amazon Forastero cocoas. RESUMEN

Due to the enormous diversity of non-culturable viruses, new viruses must be characterized using culture-independent techniques. The associated host is an important phenotypic feature that can be inferred from metagenomic viral contigs thanks to the development of several bioinformatic tools. Here, we compare the performance of recently developed virus-host prediction tools on a dataset of 1,046 virus-host pairs and then apply the best-performing tools to a metagenomic dataset derived from a highly diverse transiently hypersaline site known as the Archaean Domes (AD) within the Cuatro Ciénegas Basin, Coahuila, Mexico. Among host-dependent methods, alignment-based approaches had a precision of 66.07% and a sensitivity of 24.76%, while alignment-free methods had an average precision of 75.7% and a sensitivity of 57.5%. RaFAH, a virus-dependent alignment-based tool, had the best overall performance (F1_score = 95.7%). However, when predicting the host of AD viruses, methods based on public reference databases (such as RaFAH) showed lower inter-method agreement than host-dependent methods run against custom databases constructed from prokaryotes inhabiting AD. Methods based on custom databases also showed the greatest agreement between the source environment and the predicted host taxonomy, habitat, lifestyle, or metabolism. This highlights the value of including custom data when predicting hosts on a highly diverse metagenomic dataset, and suggests that using a combination of methods and qualitative validations related to the source environment and predicted host biology can increase the number of correct predictions. Finally, these predictions suggest that AD viruses infect halophilic archaea as well as a variety of bacteria that may be halophilic, halotolerant, alkaliphilic, thermophilic, oligotrophic, sulfate-reducing, or marine, which is consistent with the specific environment and the known geological and biological evolution of the Cuatro Ciénegas Basin and its microorganisms.

Bazex syndrome is a paraneoplastic disorder most commonly linked to squamous cell carcinomas of the upper aerodigestive tract, followed by lung cancer and other malignancies. It manifests through three stages of skin involvement that mirror the tumor's progression. Remarkably, skin lesions precede tumor symptoms or diagnosis in two-thirds of cases, underscoring the crucial role of suspecting this condition as it can promptly reveal an underlying neoplasm. Treatment primarily focuses on addressing the root neoplasm, with recurrent skin lesions potentially indicating tumor relapse. In this context, we present a clinical case involving a male patient whose manifestation of this syndrome facilitated the timely diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma. This case underscores the significance of understanding this uncommon syndrome and its link to cancer, enabling early and accurate oncological diagnosis.


El síndrome de Bazex es una enfermedad paraneoplásica que se asocia con mayor frecuencia a carcinomas de células escamosas del tracto aerodigestivo superior, seguido en frecuencia por el cáncer de pulmón y otras neoplasias. Afecta a la piel en tres etapas que tienen un comportamiento paralelo al crecimiento del tumor. En dos tercios de los casos, las lesiones cutáneas preceden a los síntomas o al diagnóstico del tumor. De ahí la importancia de la sospecha de esta entidad, que puede desenmascarar a la neoplasia asociada en una etapa temprana. Su tratamiento consiste en tratar la neoplasia subyacente. La recurrencia de las lesiones cutáneas puede revelar la recaída del tumor. Comunicamos el caso clínico de un paciente de sexo masculino en el cual el hallazgo de este síndrome permitió realizar el diagnóstico de un adenocarcinoma de pulmón, lo cual destaca la importancia de conocer a esta rara enfermedad y su asociación con cáncer, para poder realizar el diagnóstico oncológico de forma temprana y oportuna.

Organophosphorus pesticides (OPPs) such as parathion have extensive uses in agriculture and household applications. Chronic exposure to these pesticides can cause severe health and environmental issues. Therefore, a current ecological concern is associated with accumulating these noxious OPPs in food and water sources. In this work, a new Tb3+-doped Zn-LMOF (Zn-LMOF= (3D) {[Zn3(1,4 benzenedicarboxylate)3(EtOH)2]·(EtOH)0.6}∞) was synthesized by a solvent-free reaction between the Zn-LMOF and the salt TbCl3·6H2O using a high-speed ball milling. The Tb@Zn-LMOF was thoroughly characterized by multiple spectroscopic tools, including Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy-Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy, and studied in-depth as a luminescent sensor for a series of pesticides (parathion, malathion, methalaxil, carbofuran, iprodione, captan and glyphosate) in aqueous methanol. The Tb@Zn-LMOF is a long-lived green-emitting compound with luminescence originated by an efficient antenna effect from the excited energy levels of Zn-LMOF toward the 5D state of Tb3+ ions, as it is displayed by its strong emission bands at 488, 545, 585, and 620 nm and a lifetime of 1.01 ms upon excitation at 290 nm. Additions of pesticides to a neutral methanolic dispersion of Tb@Zn-LMOF modified its green emission intensity with a pronounced selectivity toward parathion within the micromolar concentration range. The detection limit for parathion was calculated to be 3.04 ± 0.2 µM for Tb@Zn-LMOF. Based on 31P NMR and mass spectrometry studies, it is attributed to the release of lanthanide ions from Tb@Zn-LMOF with the simultaneous formation of a Tb3+-parathion complex.
