RESUMEN

Previous studies have determined that Chloroluma gonocarpa (Sapotaceae), is a species that has cryptic dioecy. This type of sexual system is characterized by flowers that are morphologically perfect (both sexual whorls are present) but functionally pistillate or staminate (in each type of flower one of the sexual whorls is non-functional). In C. gonocarpa the pistillate flowers present well-developed stigma, functional ovules, and staminodes, while the staminate flowers present a poorly developed stigma, collapsed ovules, and pollen-producing anthers. In angiosperms, the abortion of sexual organs can occur at different stages of development (from pre-meiosis to post-meiosis), that is why we conducted an anatomical analysis of both flower types at various developmental stages. Using light microscopy, we described the processes of sporogenesis and gametogenesis to establish when the staminate flowers lose their pistillate function. To achieve this, we collected, fixed, and processed the flowers following conventional anatomical techniques for observation under a light microscope. Our findings reveal that pollen development occurs only in staminate flowers, while ovule development begins in both types of flowers but ceases in staminate flowers due to post-meiosis abortion. In contrast, normal development continues in pistillate flowers. These results suggest that dioecy in C. gonocarpa may have arisen from a gynodioecious pathway.

RESUMEN

The Sapotaceae are a significant component of the humid forests of the Neotropics and have many species of economic interest. Chrysophyllum gonocarpum is one of them and its edible fruits have currently acquired a high commercial value. Since there are no studies that cover its floral anatomy and elucidate its sexual system, the objective of the present study is to describe these aspects based on field observations and a detailed anatomical analysis of their flowers. Conventional techniques of plant anatomy are implemented. The results indicate that the species presents cryptic dioecy, showing specimens with morphologically and functionally pistillate flowers (with reduced staminodes), and trees with morphologically hermaphrodite and functionally staminate flowers. In addition, data on floral nectaries and laticiferous are provided.

RESUMEN

Bromelia serra leaves collected from Corrientes, Argentina, were assessed to analyze and characterize the proteolytic system and to evaluate its potential use as an industrial catalyst. The specific activity of the enzymatic extract (EE), which was prepared using acetone as a precipitating agent of the crude extract (CE), increased 2-3 folds with different substrates (hemoglobin, azocasein and casein). The proteins present in the EE have isoelectric points between 4.55-8.15 and they were significant inhibited by pepstatin A (50%) and E-64 (15%). Proteolytic activity in EE presented high activity in acidic pH (2.7-4), and low activity in neutral alkaline pH (6-11.75). The EE optimum activity was reached at 60ºC, and referring to the thermal stability, it retained over 97% of the proteolytic activity after incubation at a temperature range of 37‒60 ºC for 60 min. The effect of reducing agents and ionic strength were also measured, and it showed that the EE had its maximum activity with 5mM of cysteine, and it was inactivated with 2.5 M of NaCl. The chromatography procedures presented two purified enzymes of 21 and 54 KDa with proteolytic activity. The characteristics of the EE suggest that it is a potential candidate as an industrial catalyst.
