Introduction: Acute lung injury (TRALI) and circulatory overload (TACO) are the main causes of transfusion-related morbidity and mortality. TRALI occurs during or after transfusions of plasma or its derivatives, or by immunoglobulins in high intravenous concentration; it is associated with septic processes, surgeries, and massive transfusions. TACO is the exacerbation of respiratory manifestations in the first 6 hours post transfusion. Case report: A 38-day-old male was admitted to the emergency department with clinical symptoms experienced over the course of 8 days and characterized by respiratory distress due to subcostal retractions and nasal flaring with no other associated symptoms. Important antecedents included prematurity and low birth weight. The hemogram report showed figures compatible with anemia, which benefited from transfusion of packed red blood cells without leukocytes. In a period of less than 6 hours, the patient presented altered respiratory symptoms, practitioners ruled out infectious causes and finally considered clinical signs compatible with TRALI. Conclusion: Acute lung injury related to blood transfusion should be considered if acute respiratory failure occurs during or immediately after infusion of plasma-containing blood products.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus type 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a virus that can cause respiratory infections and pose a risk to patients' lives. While it primarily affects the airways, it can also lead to extrapulmonary clinical manifestations, such as hypercoagulable states, resulting in conditions like cerebrovascular disease, acute myocardial infarction, and, in rare cases, Budd-Chiari syndrome. Clinical case: This case involves a patient who was admitted to the emergency room with dyspnea on moderate exertion, progressive functional class deterioration, lower extremity edema, cough, fever, and weakness. The patient had a history of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection one month prior. Abdominal CT scan revealed subacute Budd-Chiari syndrome involving the middle sub-hepatic vein, along with right ventricle thrombosis, and a positive test for SARS-CoV-2. Conclusions: Budd-Chiari syndrome has multiple causes, primarily associated with hypercoagulable states or the presence of neoplasms that disrupt liver function or obstruct hepatic venous drainage. However, the understanding of the relationship between COVID-19 hypercoagulability and Budd-Chiari syndrome is still limited. Further research is needed to explore the heterogeneity of its pathogenesis in the context of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic.

Drought is a major threat to plant growth in many parts of the world. During periods of drought, multiple aspects of plant physiology are negatively affected. For instance, water shortages induce osmotic imbalance, inhibit photosynthesis, decrease nutrient uptake, and increases the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). In this context, it is necessary to develop sustainable strategies for crops that would help mitigate these conditions. In previous studies, endophytic Zopfiella erostrata strains were found to extensively colonize plant roots, forming a profuse melanized mycelium in the rhizosphere, which could be involved in improving water uptake and nutrient mineralization in plants. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different strains of Z. erostrata on stress mitigation in wheat and tomato plants grown under water deficit conditions. General plant growth variables, as well as physiological and biochemical parameters, related to oxidative status were determined. Our data demonstrate that inoculation with both Zopfiella strains had a very significant effect on plant growth, even under water deficit conditions. However, we observed an even more pronounced impact, depending on the plant and strain involved, suggesting a certain degree of plant/strain compatibility. The biochemical aspects, the accumulation of proline, the oxidative damage to lipids, and the activity of antioxidant enzymes varied considerably depending on the endophyte and the plant evaluated.

RESUMEN

This research investigates astronaut performance under simulated space conditions, using THOR, an analog astronaut training protocol, during a week-long confinement in an Analog Astronaut Training Center in Poland. Materials and Five participants, including four military and one civilian, underwent a week of isolation. Tests were conducted to assess heart rate variability HRV, psychological health, and sleep patterns. Data collection and analysis were standardized, with an alpha level of p < 0.05 and power of 80%. The study found reductions in fat percentage and weight, while muscle mass and water content remained stable. HRV showed significant changes. Increased sleep and state anxiety levels were noted, along with decreased cognitive abilities. Personality traits exhibited heightened hostility and social anxiety, culminating in psychological discomfort. HRV values were normal with variations likely due to stress. A significant correlation was found between mental performance and HRV, indicating potential influence of sleep on cognitive function during isolation. The study highlights the need for more research on the psycho-logical and physiological implications of long-duration space missions and similar high-demand environments.

Currently, there are no free databases of 3D point clouds and images for seedling phenotyping. Therefore, this paper describes a platform for seedling scanning using 3D Lidar with which a database was acquired for use in plant phenotyping research. In total, 362 maize seedlings were recorded using an RGB camera and a SICK LMS4121R-13000 laser scanner with angular resolutions of 45° and 0.5° respectively. The scanned plants are diverse, with seedling captures ranging from less than 10 cm to 40 cm, and ranging from 7 to 24 days after planting in different light conditions in an indoor setting. The point clouds were processed to remove noise and imperfections with a mean absolute precision error of 0.03 cm, synchronized with the images, and time-stamped. The database includes the raw and processed data and manually assigned stem and leaf labels. As an example of a database application, a Random Forest classifier was employed to identify seedling parts based on morphological descriptors, with an accuracy of 89.41%.

RESUMEN

This study aims to mine a previously developed continuous-flow competitive exclusion culture (CFCEC) originating from the Tilapia gut microbiome as a rational and efficient autochthonous probiotic strain recovery source. Three isolated strains were tested on their adaptability to host gastrointestinal conditions, their antibacterial activities against aquaculture bacterial pathogens, and their antibiotic susceptibility patterns. Their genomes were fully sequenced, assembled, annotated, and relevant functions inferred, such as those related to pinpointed probiotic activities and phylogenomic comparative analyses to the closer reported strains/species relatives. The strains are possible candidates of novel genus/species taxa inside Lactococcus spp. and Priestia spp. (previously known as Bacillus spp.) These results were consistent with reports on strains inside these phyla exhibiting probiotic features, and the strains we found are expanding their known diversity. Furthermore, their pangenomes showed that these bacteria have indeed a set of so far uncharacterized genes that may play a role in the antagonism to competing strains or specific symbiotic adaptations to the fish host. In conclusion, CFCEC proved to effectively allow the enrichment and further pure culture isolation of strains with probiotic potential.

RESUMEN

Arterioenteric fistulas (AEFs) are a rare disease. They are a communication between a major artery and digestive tract. We present a patient who, after suffering a gunshot wound to the abdomen, underwent an exploratory laparotomy with damage control surgery, who later presented with hematemesis and melena. Studies were performed where an aneursyma of the right renal artery and gastrointestinal bleeding due to primary arterioenteric fistula were evidenced, which is successfully treated by angioembolization. Endovascular therapy for the treatment of AEF is a useful resource in patients with the previous abdominal surgeries that could make their management more difficult.

INTRODUCTION: Haitian stroke patients had higher diastolic and mean arterial blood pressures, compared with non-Haitian controls. Therefore, we hypothesized that Haitians would have a higher prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy and decreased ejection fraction. METHODS: Using the Haitian Stroke Database, a cohort study was conducted. The following transthoracic echocardiographic parameters of 52 Haitians and 111 non-Haitians were compared: left ventricular hypertrophy; ejection fraction; right and left ventricular internal dimension at diastole; and left atrial size. RESULTS: Left ventricular hypertrophy and decreased ejection fraction were more prevalent among Haitians (78% vs. 63%; p=.062 and 21% vs. 13%; p=.173, respectively). Neither reached statistical significance. Left atrial enlargement was significantly more prevalent among non-Haitians (36% vs 15%; p=.007). CONCLUSIONS: Left ventricular hypertrophy and decreased ejection fraction were more prevalent in Haitians, but neither finding reached statistical significance. Larger samples are needed for further understanding of stroke comorbidities in Haitians.

RESUMEN

Skin mucus in fish is the first barrier between the organism and the environment but the role of skin mucus in protecting fish against pathogens is not well understood. During copulation in sharks, the male bites the female generating wounds, which are then highly likely to become infected by opportunistic bacteria from the water or from the male shark's mouth. Describing the microbial component of epithelial mucus may allow future understanding of this first line of defense in sharks. In this study, we analyzed mucus and skin samples obtained from 19 individuals of two shark species and a stingray: the nurse shark (Ginglymostoma cirratum), the lemon shark (Negaprion brevirostris) and the southern stingray (Hypanus americanus). Total DNA was extracted from all samples, and the bacterial 16S rRNA gene (region V3-V4) was amplified and sequenced on the Ion Torrent Platform. Bacterial diversity (order) was higher in skin and mucus than in water. Order composition was more similar between the two shark species. Alpha-diversities (Shannon and Simpson) for OTUs (clusters of sequences defined by a 97% identity threshold for the16S rRNA gene) were high and there were non-significant differences between elasmobranch species or types of samples. We found orders of potentially pathogenic bacteria in water samples collected from the area where the animals were found, such as Pasteurellales (i.e., genus Pasteurella spp. and Haemophilus spp.) and Oceanospirillales (i.e., genus Halomonas spp.) but these were not found in the skin or mucus samples from any species. Some bacterial orders, such as Flavobacteriales, Vibrionales (i.e., genus Pseudoalteromonas), Lactobacillales and Bacillales were found only in mucus and skin samples. However, in a co-occurrence analyses, no significant relationship was found among these orders (strength less than 0.6, p-value > 0.01) but significant relationships were found among the order Trembayales, Fusobacteriales, and some previously described marine environmental Bacteria and Archaea, including Elusimicrobiales, Thermoproteales, Deinococcales and Desulfarculales. This is the first study focusing on elasmobranch microbial communities. The functional role and the benefits of these bacteria still needs understanding as well as the potential changes to microbial communities as a result of changing environmental conditions.

RESUMEN

The Wider Caribbean Region is an important tourist destination where agricultural, industrial and shipping activities are also carried on. Coastal zones are heavily populated and receive a high human pressure; however, few monitoring programmes allow assessing long-term anthropogenic impact trends in these areas, which are especially useful for integrated management programs. Through the support of the International Atomic Energy Agency (project RLA/7/012), sediment core activities of 210Pb and 137Cs were used to evaluate changes in sedimentation rates in 11 relevant coastal areas of the region, where environmental information is scarce, but needed to support national environmental policies. Most 210Pb activity profiles were atypical, attributed to non-steady sedimentation conditions; whereas 137Cs activity profiles, showing very low values, were of little help for 210Pb-dating corroboration. Results evidenced conspicuous changes in mass accumulation rates (MAR), specially through the Anthropocene (i.e. since ~1950s) in most cases, attributed to deforestation and land erosion (one of the clearest indicators of global change), and the input of urban and industrial untreated wastes. The recent MAR decrease in Havana Bay (Cuba) was attributed to the implementation of environmental policies, which showed that 210Pb-derived reconstruction of environmental changes is also useful to verify the effectiveness of management programs to control land-derived erosion and siltation issues. Since siltation can be detrimental to valuable coastal resources around the world, retrospective evaluations of sedimentation rates, based on 210Pb-dated cores, are highly recommended to assist integrated coastal zone management programs in the region and elsewhere.

RESUMEN

AIM: Building strategies for the country-level dissemination of Kangaroo mother care (KMC) to reduce the mortality rate in preterm and low birth weight babies and improve quality of life. KMC is an evidence-based healthcare method for these infants. However, KMC implementation at the global level remains low. METHODS: The international network in Kangaroo mother brought 172 KMC professionals from 33 countries together for a 2-day workshop held in conjunction with the XIIth International KMC Conference in Bogota, Colombia, in November 2018. Participants worked in clusters to formulate strategies for country-level dissemination and scale-up according to seven pre-established objectives. RESULTS: The minimum set of indicators for KMC scale-up proposed by the internationally diverse groups is presented. The strategies for KMC integration and implementation at the country level, as well as the approaches for convincing healthcare providers of the safety of KMC transportation, are also described. Finally, the main aspects concerning KMC follow-up and KMC for term infants are presented. CONCLUSION: In this collaborative meeting, participants from low-, middle- and high-income countries combined their knowledge and experience to identify the best strategies to implement KMC at a countrywide scale.

Abstract In patients with arterial or venous thrombosis, in situ or due to an embolism, the use of fibrinolytics (such as recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator, rtPA) administered directly into the clot through a selective catheter into the occlusion site. This can lead to a more rapid resolution of the thrombotic or embolic occlusion with a lower dose of the fibrinolytic agent, and therefore with less problems with haemorrhages than with systemic use. The situations in which selective fibrinolysis with a catheter can be considered are mainly, acute ischaemia of a limb due to a blocked artery, pulmonary thromboembolism, proximal ileo-femoral deep venous thrombosis, proximal axillo-subclavian deep venous thrombosis, and in the thrombosis of the venous access for dialysis It is also indicated in paediatric patients in cases of arterial thrombosis or embolisms with an ischaemic limb, and in selective cases of proximal deep venous thrombosis of the limbs. In this consensus, a description will be given of each one of the indications, with a protocol for the management with rtPA in each one of them, as well as monitoring its use and the management of haemorrhage complications.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Although Florida is home to the largest number of Haitian immigrants, few studies exist regarding stroke in this population. METHODS: A comparative case series of Haitian (n=72) and non-Haitian (n=144) stroke patients was conducted. After matching for gender and stroke subtype (78.7% ischemic and 21.3% hemorrhagic), demographics, clinical characteristics, and outcomes were compared. RESULTS: Compared with non-Haitians, Haitian stroke patients were younger (67 vs 70.5 years; p=.0384), had higher diastolic blood pressures (88.2 vs 80.4 mm Hg; p=.006) and mean arterial pressures (112 vs 104.5 mm Hg; p=.01), and higher mean glycosylated hemoglobin values (7.2 vs 6.5 g/dL; p=.017). There were no significant differences in stroke severity or rates of tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) administration. Haitians were almost 80% less likely to have Medicare or private insurance (OR= 0.23; p<.001). DISCUSSION: Haitian immigrants need improved access to care and prevention of known stroke risk factors, including hypertension and hyperglycemia.

RESUMEN

Hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC) transplantation is a treatment option for malignant and nonmalignant diseases. Umbilical cord blood (UCB) is an important HPC source, mainly for pediatric patients. It has been demonstrated that human leukocyte antigen (HLA) matching and cell dose are the most important features impacting clinical outcomes. However, UCB matching is performed using low resolution HLA typing and it has been demonstrated that the unnoticed mismatches negatively impact the transplant. Since we found differences in CD34+ viability after thawing of UCB units matched for two different patients (p = 0.05), we presumed a possible association between CD34+ cell viability and HLA. We performed a multivariate linear model (n = 67), comprising pre-cryopreservation variables and high resolution HLA genotypes separately. We found that pre-cryopreservation red blood cells (RBC), granulocytes, and viable CD34+ cell count significantly impacted CD34+ viability after thawing, along with HLA-B or -C (R2 = 0.95, p = 0.01; R2 = 0.56, p = 0.007, respectively). Although HLA-B*40:02 may have a negative impact on CD34+ cell viability, RBC depletion significantly improves it.

RESUMEN

Robots, or in general, intelligent vehicles, require large amounts of data to adapt their behavior to the environment and achieve their goals. When their missions take place in large areas, using additional information to that gathered by the onboard sensors frequently offers a more efficient solution of the problem. The emergence of Cyber-Physical Systems and Cloud computing allows this approach, but integration of sensory information, and its effective availability for the robots or vehicles is challenging. This paper addresses the development and implementation of a modular mobile node of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), designed to be mounted onboard vehicles, and capable of using different sensors according to mission needs. The mobile node is integrated with an existing static network, transforming it into a Hybrid Wireless Sensor Network (H-WSN), and adding flexibility and range to it. The integration is achieved without the need for multi-hop routing. A database holds the data acquired by both mobile and static nodes, allowing access in real-time to the gathered information. A Human⁻Machine Interface (HMI) presents this information to users. Finally, the system is tested in real urban scenarios in a use-case of measurement of gas levels.

Introduction: Obstetric patients can present numerous complications that put in danger their lives, and they need of admission in intensive care units. Objective: To characterize in a clinical way the critically ill pregnant women with neurological complications. Methods: An observational, descriptive, retrospective study was conducted in Hermanos Ameijeiras. Clinical-Surgical Hospital during the period from January, 2007 to December, 2016. There was carried out the calculation of absolute and relative frequencies for the analysis of the data; there were applied measures of central (average) trends and dispersion (range), and to know the possible association between the qualitative variables the Chi-square´s Test was performed with a significance of p < 0.05. Results: The neurological complications appeared in 33,3 percent of the patients and the most frequent were: eclampsia (65,7 percent), cerebral infarction (9,0 percent) and cerebral venous thrombosis (8,6 percent). Being a nulliparous women (51,4 percent) and age of more than 35 years (42,8 percent) were the most common risk factors. Arterial hypertension was the main pathological background and the association between the neurological complications and the direct cause of the death (p=0.00043) was demonstrated. Conclusions: The neurological complications were frequent in critically ill pregnant women and they constitute a direct cause of death. The most frequent complication was eclampsia(AU)

RESUMEN

At present, drought and soil salinity are among the most severe environmental stresses that affect the growth of plants through marked reduction of water uptake which lowers water potential, leading to osmotic stress. In general, osmotic stress causes a series of morphological, physiological, biochemical, and molecular changes that affect plant performance. Several studies have found that diverse types of soil microorganisms improve plant growth, especially when plants are under stressful conditions. Most important are the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) which form arbuscular mycorrhizas (AM) with approximately 80% of plant species and are present in almost all terrestrial ecosystems. Beyond the well-known role of AM in improving plant nutrient uptake, the contributions of AM to plants coping with osmotic stress merit analysis. With this review, we describe the principal direct and indirect mechanisms by which AM modify plant responses to osmotic stress, highlighting the role of AM in photosynthetic activity, water use efficiency, osmoprotectant production, antioxidant activities, and gene expression. We also discuss the potential for using AMF to improve plant performance under osmotic stress conditions and the lines of research needed to optimize AM use in plant production.

Neurological complications of human immunodeficiency virus infection can affect any portion of the neuroaxis. These are divided into two large groups: those that are a consequence of HIV infection and those that are secondary in nature and that occur, mainly, as a result of the associated immunosuppression. Toxoplasmosis of the central nervous system is among the most frequent neurological complications that occur as a secondary consequence of this infection. The case of an HIV positive patient who had a sudden clinical picture due to loss of consciousness followed by generalized tonic-clonic seizure and subsequently a 38 °C fever accompanied by severe oppressive retroocular headache, as well as fluctuating confusion and left hemiparesis. Neurotoxoplasmosis diagnosis was confirmed, with a favorable response to the treatment and resolution of the disease(AU)
