RESUMEN

Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) is the basic raw material to produce chocolate and other derivatives such as cocoa butter, cocoa powder and cocoa liquor (cocoa paste), which requires a fermentation process that affects its chemical composition and sensory profile. The objective of this study was to monitor the biochemical, physical and sensory changes during fermentation of cocoa beans in cocoa bean processing plants in the department of Caquetá, Colombia. During fermentation, the temperature of the mass and the pH of the pulp and beans were monitored at the different cocoa bean processing plants (Sites ASOACASAN ASA, COMICACAO CMI, COMCAP COC). Also, at two points during fermentation (days 4 and 7), physical properties of the bean were determined, such as variables related to bromatological composition, polyphenolic compounds and antioxidant activity as sensory attributes at the different sites. An increase in dough temperature was found, however the pH of the cotyledon decreased during the fermentation process and the fat and moisture content varied with fermentation time. At the site level, total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoids (TF), 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazil (DPPH) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) contents were statistically different, with COC being different from the other sites. The TPC was higher at the COC site (507 mg gallic acid equivalent GAE/g Cocoa) with respect to the other sites (< 360 mg GAE/g Cocoa). The TF content followed a similar behavior to TPC, with significant differences between sites and differences between fermentation times for ASA. The TF was higher in COC (309.1 mg catechin/g cocoa) with respect to CMI (215.6 mg catechin/g cocoa) and ASA (185.7 mg catechin/g cocoa). Values in DPPH ranged from 5869.3 to 7781.8 µmol Trolox/g cocoa and for the FRAP assay ranged from 369.8 to 606.7 mg ascorbic acid AA/g cocoa among the sites. It was found that the time and management of the fermentation process has a significant impact on the parameters (biochemical, physical and sensory) of cocoa beans. Therefore, it is necessary to standardize the fermentation process to achieve a quality product that meets the needs of the market.

BACKGROUND: Agastache mexicana is used in traditional medicine to treat anxiety, insomnia, pain, among others. In a previous study, the methanolic extract exerted anxiolytic and sedative effects, as observed behaviorally, associated with one of its major components, tilianin. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect produced by the extracts and tilianin obtained from Agastache mexicana on depressive-induced behavior model and on the activity of monoamine oxidases (MAOs). METHODS: The depression experimental model consisted of the forced swimming test in rats. MAOs activity was evaluated in cortex and hippocampus from the tilianin and Agastache extracts treated rats using specific inhibitors for each isoform. The quantification of monoamines was carried out using an High Performance Liquid Chromatography method. RESULTS: An increase in the swimming time was observed in rodents treated with doses of 16 (226.6 ± 5.5 seconds) and 50 mg/kg (237.8 ± 5.7 seconds) of tilianin, methanolic (260.4 ± 3 seconds), and hydroalcoholic extracts (249.6 ± 2.6 seconds) at 100 mg/kg. MAOs activity was significantly decreased in brain tissue from animals treated with 16 and 50 mg/kg of tilianin, methanolic, and hydroalcoholic extracts at 100 mg/kg. CONCLUSIONS: The tilianin effect on monoamine oxidases inhibition is confirmed, suggesting its potential use in the treatment of certain neurological disorders.

Pancreatic ß­cells are the only cells that synthesize insulin to regulate blood glucose levels. Various conditions can affect the mass of pancreatic ß­cells and decrease insulin levels. Diabetes mellitus is a disease characterized by insulin resistance and chronic hyperglycemia, mainly due to the loss of pancreatic ß­cells caused by an increase in the rate of apoptosis. Additionally, hyperglycemia has a toxic effect on ß­cells. Although the precise mechanism of glucotoxicity is not fully understood, several mechanisms have been proposed. The most prominent changes are increases in reactive oxygen species, the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the activation of the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis due to p53. The present review analyzed the location of p53 in the cytoplasm, mitochondria and nucleus in terms of post­translational modifications, including phosphorylation, O­GlcNAcylation and poly­ADP­ribosylation, under hyperglycemic conditions. These modifications protect p53 from degradation by the proteasome and, in turn, enable it to regulate the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis through the regulation of anti­apoptotic and pro­apoptotic elements. Degradation of p53 occurs in the proteasome and depends on its ubiquitination by Mdm2. Understanding the mechanisms that activate the death of pancreatic ß­cells will allow the proposal of treatment alternatives to prevent the decrease in pancreatic ß­cells.

Currently, the excessive use of pesticides has generated environmental pollution and harmful effects on human health. The controlled release of active ingredients through the use of nanomaterials (NMs) appears to reduce human exposure and ecosystem alteration. Although the use of NMs can offer an alternative to traditional methods of disease diagnosis and control, it is necessary to review the current approach to the application of these NMs. This review describes the most recent and significant advances in using NMs for diagnosing and treating plant diseases (bacteria, phytopathogenic fungi, viruses, and phytopathogenic nematodes) in cultivated plants. Most studies have focused on reducing, delaying, or eliminating bacteria, fungi, viruses, and nematodes in plants. Both metallic (including metal oxides) and organic nanoparticles (NPs) and composites are widely used in diagnosing and controlling plant diseases due to their biocompatibility and ease of synthesis. Few studies have been carried out with regard to carbon-based NPs due to their toxicity, so future studies should address the development of detection tools, ecological and economic impacts, and human health. The synergistic effect of NMs as fertilizers and pesticides opens new areas of knowledge on the mechanisms of action (plant-pathogen-NMs interaction), the interaction of NMs with nutrients, the effects on plant metabolism, and the traceability of NMs to implement sustainable approaches. More studies are needed involving in vivo models under international regulations to ensure their safety. There is still controversy in the release of NMs into the environment because they could threaten the stability and functioning of biological systems, so research in this area needs to be improved.

INTRODUCTION: During the COVID-19 pandemic, access to dental treatment by persons deprived of their liberty (PPL) was affected due to dentist-patient proximity and the risk of generation of aerosols in dental procedures and treatments. The risks of infection for oral health personnel are considered high, mainly from cross-infection between patients. OBJECTIVES: Differentiate between a true and false dental consultation emergency during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak for a better and effective screening of inmates of the Social Rehabilitation Center (CERESO) of San Francisco Kobén (Campeche, Mexico). MATERIAL AND METHOD: An observational, cross-sectional, descriptive, and prospective study was designed for a sample of 100 inmates of the CERESO San Francisco Kobén, the data was collected in the prison's dental office, the participants signed a letter of informed consent to be voluntarily included in the study during the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. The questionnaire "Assessment of a true Dental Emergency" previously validated for the Mexican population was applied, the personnel was standardized and an intra- examiner and inter-examiner reliability of k = 0.98 was obtained. To prepare the database and the analysis of the information collected, the Statistical Package for Social Science v. 21 (SPSS v.21) was used. RESULTS: When evaluating emergencies at the dental clinic, 84% were determined according to the instrument as a false emergency and 16% were a true emergency. DISCUSSION: In the population of CERESO of San Francisco Kobén, the figures for medical-dental care show that inmates face a proportionally low dental morbidity-mortality.

The classic enzymatic function of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) is the hydrolysis of acetylcholine (ACh) in the neuronal synapse. However, AChE is also present in nonneuronal cells such as lymphocytes. Various studies have proposed the participation of AChE in the development of cancer. The ACHE gene produces three mRNAs (T, H and R). AChE-T encodes amphiphilic monomers, dimers, tetramers (G1 A, G2 A and G4 A) and hydrophilic tetramers (G4 H). AChE-H encodes amphiphilic monomers and dimers (G1 A and G2 A). AChE-R encodes a hydrophilic monomer (G1 H). The present study considered the differences in the mRNA expression (T, H and R) and protein levels of AChE, as well as the molecular forms of AChE, the glycosylation pattern and the enzymatic activity of AChE present in normal T lymphocytes and leukemic Jurkat E6-1 cells. The results revealed that AChE enzymatic activity was higher in normal T lymphocytes than in Jurkat cells. Normal T cells expressed AChE-H transcripts, whereas Jurkat cells expressed AChE-H and AChE-T. The molecular forms identified in normal T cells were G2 A (5.2 S) and G1 A (3.5 S), whereas those in Jurkat cells were G2 A (5.2 S), G1 A (3.5 S) and G4 H (10.6S). AChE in Jurkat cells showed altered posttranslational maturation since a decrease in the incorporation of galactose and sialic acid into its structure was observed. In conclusion, the content and composition of AChE were altered in Jurkat cells compared with those in normal T lymphocytes. The present study opened new avenues for exploring the development of novel therapeutic strategies against T-cell leukemia and for identifying potential molecular targets for the early detection of this type of cancer.

Enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses for reference intervals (RIs) establish ranges of physiological normality, which are useful for diagnosing diseases and physiological alterations. Within the same species, RIs vary according to age, gender, productive and physiological states, and environmental factors including health management and nutrition. RIs have been extensively studied in dairy calves during a critical stage of life (from birth up to first 90 days of age). A critical stage for feedlot calves is their arrival at the feedlot, but no reports determine RIs for different enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses during their initial period at the feedlot. Consequently, a total of 461 high-risk crossbreed beef calves, received on three different dates, were examined upon arrival at the feedlot. Of these, 320 calves (148.3 ± 1.3 kg body weight) whose "clinical health" was evaluated were included in the study. Blood samples were taken upon arrival and on days 14, 28, 42, and 56 to determine the following parameters: enzymic activity, metabolites, electrolytes, white blood cells, platelets, and red blood cells. Enzymic activity, metabolites, and complete blood count were determined by automated analyzers. The freeware Reference Value Advisor Software was used to calculate the non-parametric values of RIs. This study is the first to establish RIs for different enzymic activity, metabolites, and hematological responses in high-risk newly received calves during their initial period at the feedlot. This information will be useful for veterinary clinical practice and research related to the health and welfare of high-risk newly received calves during their initial period at the feedlot.

The objective of this exploratory study was to assess if microencapsulated arginine influences the physicochemical quality of beef. The study included three genetic groups: Angus, Hereford, and Angus × Hereford crossbreed. Two encapsulation systems were used with carnauba wax, at ratios of 3:1 and 2:1, carnauba wax:core (arginine), respectively. A control treatment was also included with no arginine addition. Encapsulated arginine with a 3:1 ratio increased redness by 19.66 at 28 d aged beef compared to the control and 2:1 ratio with values of 18.55 and 16.77, respectively (p = 0.01). Encapsulated arginine at a 3:1 ratio showed the lowest meat shear force values with 24.32 N at 28 d of ageing (p < 0.001). The Angus breed also had a low value of 24.02 N (p < 0.001). Finally, the highest values of intramuscular fat were observed with the inclusion of arginine in a 3:1 ratio. The fat value reached 2.12% with a 3:1 ratio (p = 0.002), while in the Angus breed it was 1.59%. The addition of carnauba wax-encapsulated arginine can improve meat quality. It enhances red color, tenderness, and marbling in bovine meat.

Lead exposure is a severe public health issue that can adversely affect children's neurocognitive development. A semi-urban community in Mexico has been exposed to lead from food cooked in glazed clay pots. A cognitive intervention was conducted from 2015 to 2016 to minimize this negative impact. This intervention aimed to improve the neurocognitive development of the affected children. METHODS: A quasi-experimental study with a control group was conducted in children aged 7 to 12 years from 2 communities in Morelos, Mexico. Blood lead levels were determined, and the neurocognitive function was assessed pre- and postintervention with the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children and Children's Auditory Verbal Learning Test-2. A cognitive intervention was conducted at the school. The difference-in-differences method adjusted for variables known as priori and evaluated the impact of cognitive intervention. RESULTS: The differences-in-differences models indicated a significant average increase in scores on the Verbal Comprehension Index (9.58 points), Processing Speed Index (5.33 points), intelligence quotient (5.63 points) level of learning (7.66 points), interference trial (10.12 points), immediate memory span (7.98 points), and recognition accuracy (1.18 points) subtests after the cognitive intervention. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that cognitive intervention improves neurocognitive development in schoolchildren exposed to Pb.

Pancreas transplant (PTx) is the only treatment that establishes normal glucose levels for patients diagnosed with diabetes types 1 and 2. The paper aims to review and analyze graft survival, patient survival, and the impact on diabetic complications. We describe that the graft survival was 82-98% at 1 year, 90% at 5 years, and 75-54% at 10 years for simultaneous pancreas-kidney recipient; 71% pancreas after kidney (PAK), and 62% PTx alone at 1 year. Patient survival: At 1 year for recipients was 96.9% simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation (SPK); for PAK transplantation recipients, 96.3%; and for PTx alone recipients, 98.3%. In general, the pancreas transplantation improves and reverses diabetic complications. Finally, the pancreatic transplant is a morbid procedure and emerges as a significant alternative in diabetes management, directly competing with conventional insulin therapies. Results so far suggest that the most effective transplant model is the SPK. While more patients could benefit from this procedure, surgical complications and the need for immunosuppression pose significant challenges.


El trasplante de páncreas es el único tratamiento que estabiliza los niveles normales de glucosa en los pacientes diagnosticados con diabetes tipo 1 o tipo 2. En esta revisión se analizan la supervivencia del injerto, la supervivencia del paciente y el impacto en las complicaciones diabéticas. Se describe la supervivencia del injerto: 82-98% al año para los receptores de trasplante simultáneo de páncreas y riñón, 71% para trasplante páncreas después de riñón y 62% para trasplante de páncreas solitario al año. Supervivencia de los pacientes a 1 año: 96.9% para los receptores de trasplante simultáneo de páncreas y riñón, 96.3% para los receptores de trasplante de páncreas después de riñón y 98.3% para los receptores de páncreas solitario. En general, el trasplante de páncreas mejora y revierte las complicaciones diabéticas. Finalmente, el trasplante de páncreas, un procedimiento mórbido, surge como una alternativa significativa en el manejo de la diabetes, compitiendo directamente con las terapias convencionales de insulina. Hasta ahora, los resultados indican que el modelo de trasplante más efectivo es el simultáneo de páncreas y riñón. Aunque más pacientes podrían beneficiarse de este procedimiento, las complicaciones quirúrgicas y la necesidad de inmunosupresión plantean desafíos significativos.

Selecting an adequate model to represent the mass transfer mechanisms occurring in a chromatographic process is generally complicated, which is one of the reasons why monolithic chromatography is scarcely simulated. In this study, the chromatographic separation of model proteins bovine serum albumin (BSA), ß-lactoglobulin-A, and ß-lactoglobulin-B on an anion exchange monolith was simulated based on experimental parameter determination, simultaneous model testing, and validation under three statistical criteria: retention time, dispersion accuracies, and Pearson correlation coefficient. Experimental characterization of morphologic, physicochemical, and kinetic parameters was performed through volume balances, pressure drop analysis, breakthrough curve analysis, and batch adsorptions. Free Gibbs energy indicated a spontaneous adsorption process for proteins and counterions. Dimensionless numbers were estimated based on height equivalent to a theoretical plate analysis, finding that pore diffusion controlled ß-lactoglobulin separation, whereas adsorption/desorption kinetics was the dominant mechanism for BSA. The elution profiles were modeled using the transport dispersive model and the reactive dispersive model coupled with steric mass action (SMA) isotherms because these models allowed to consider most of the mass transport mechanisms that have been described. RDM-SMA presented the most accurate simulations at pH 6.0 and at low (250 mM) and high (400 mM) NaCl concentrations. This simulation will be used as reference to forecast the purification of these proteins from bovine whey waste and to extrapolate this methodology to other monolith-based separations using these three statistical criteria that have not been used previously for this purpose.

BACKGROUND: Sucrose accumulation in sugarcane is affected by several environmental and genetic factors, with plant moisture being of critical importance for its role in the synthesis and transport of sugars within the cane stalks, affecting the sucrose concentration. In general, rainfall and high soil humidity during the ripening stage promote plant growth, increasing the fresh weight and decreasing the sucrose yield in the humid region of Colombia. Therefore, this study aimed to identify markers associated with sucrose accumulation or production in the humid environment of Colombia through a genome-wide association study (GWAS). RESULTS: Sucrose concentration measurements were taken in 220 genotypes from the Cenicaña's diverse panel at 10 (early maturity) and 13 (normal maturity) months after planting. For early maturity data was collected during plant cane and first ratoon, while at normal maturity it was during plant cane, first, and second ratoon. A total of 137,890 SNPs were selected after sequencing the 220 genotypes through GBS, RADSeq, and whole-genome sequencing. After GWAS analysis, a total of 77 markers were significantly associated with sucrose concentration at both ages, but only 39 were close to candidate genes previously reported for sucrose accumulation and/or production. Among the candidate genes, 18 were highlighted because they were involved in sucrose hydrolysis (SUS6, CIN3, CINV1, CINV2), sugar transport (i.e., MST1, MST2, PLT5, SUT4, ERD6 like), phosphorylation processes (TPS genes), glycolysis (PFP-ALPHA, HXK3, PHI1), and transcription factors (ERF12, ERF112). Similarly, 64 genes were associated with glycosyltransferases, glycosidases, and hormones. CONCLUSIONS: These results provide new insights into the molecular mechanisms involved in sucrose accumulation in sugarcane and contribute with important genomic resources for future research in the humid environments of Colombia. Similarly, the markers identified will be validated for their potential application within Cenicaña's breeding program to assist the development of breeding populations.

Cordycepin, or 3'-deoxyadenosine, is an adenosine analog with a broad spectrum of biological activity. The key structural difference between cordycepin and adenosine lies in the absence of a hydroxyl group at the 3' position of the ribose ring. Upon administration, cordycepin can undergo an enzymatic transformation in specific tissues, forming cordycepin triphosphate. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive analysis of the structural features of cordycepin and its derivatives, contrasting them with endogenous purine-based metabolites using chemoinformatics and bioinformatics tools in addition to molecular dynamics simulations. We tested the hypothesis that cordycepin triphosphate could bind to the active site of the adenylate cyclase enzyme. The outcomes of our molecular dynamics simulations revealed scores that are comparable to, and superior to, those of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), the endogenous ligand. This interaction could reduce the production of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) by acting as a pseudo-ATP that lacks a hydroxyl group at the 3' position, essential to carry out nucleotide cyclization. We discuss the implications in the context of the plasticity of cancer and other cells within the tumor microenvironment, such as cancer-associated fibroblast, endothelial, and immune cells. This interaction could awaken antitumor immunity by preventing phenotypic changes in the immune cells driven by sustained cAMP signaling. The last could be an unreported molecular mechanism that helps to explain more details about cordycepin's mechanism of action.

Introducción: en los pacientes que cursaron COVID-19 grave o crítico se ha descripto el uso de prednisona y rehabilitación musculoesquelética y respiratoria. No está claramente establecido el rol de estas intervenciones, ni el momento óptimo para su inicio. En este trabajo se muestran los resultados de la Unidad de Rehabilitación del Hospital del Banco de Seguros del Estado (URHBSE) que implementó un programa de rehabilitación integral y uso de corticoides en la etapa subaguda de pacientes pos-COVID-19 grave o crítico, con un enfoque sistematizado, trabajando desde la interdisciplina y centrado en la persona atendida. Se reportan hallazgos al ingreso, requerimiento de oxígeno, escala de Barthel, patrones tomográficos, uso de corticoides, su respuesta y complicaciones. Se describen los resultados de este enfoque sobre variables clínicas, respiratorias y funcionales. Material y método: estudio descriptivo, retrospectivo, de pacientes pos-COVID-19 que completaron la rehabilitación en la URHBSE, en el período comprendido entre abril y agosto de 2021. Datos obtenidos de revisión de historias clínicas. Análisis estadístico con PRISM (v8.2.1). Resultados: completaron el programa de rehabilitación 84 pacientes. Al ingreso a la URHBSE, 55% tenía dependencia total o grave en la escala de Barthel. No lograba marcha el 48%. Requería oxígeno el 89,2% de los pacientes con una media de saturación de 90,3 ± 4,8. El 25% ingresó requiriendo máscara con reservorio. Todos los pacientes que comenzaron el programa se encontraban en fase subaguda de la enfermedad (4 a 12 semanas), y recibieron un plan de rehabilitación integral e individualizado. El objetivo era alcanzar una situación funcional similar a la que presentaban previo al COVID-19. La duración de la internación en la URHBSE fue de 23,5 ± 13,8 días. A 76 pacientes (90,5%) se les realizó tomografía de alta resolución de tórax (TACAR), resultando patológica en 96,1%. Predominaba el vidrio deslustrado (49,3%), la consolidación en 8,23% y un patrón de tipo fibrosis like en 30,13%. Se detectaron alteraciones tomográficas "no típicas" de daño pos-COVID (derrame pleural, nódulos cavitados, cavidades apicales, etc.) en 11,8% de las tomografías. En dos pacientes (2,6%) se halló una aspergilosis pulmonar y en 6,6% tromboembolismo pulmonar. Recibieron prednisona 44 pacientes (52,3%). En 63,4% se suspendió el aporte de oxígeno en los primeros 15 días desde el inicio de prednisona. Encontramos asociación entre el patrón tomográfico con vidrio deslustrado y la suspensión precoz del aporte de oxígeno desde el inicio de prednisona (p = 0,047). A pesar del alto grado de colonización, incluso en aquellos casos en que utilizamos prednisona, no observamos infecciones por microorganismos colonizantes. Comparando ingreso y egreso se hallaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas en los siguientes parámetros: el grado de disnea, el requerimiento de oxígeno (un solo paciente fue dado de alta con oxígeno), la saturación, el grado de instrumentación (traqueostomía, sonda nasogástrica, etc.), y la escala de dependencia de Barthel. En cuanto a las variables respiratorias solo contamos con el dato de la presencia de disnea de los primeros 35 pacientes, de éstos, 83% presentaba disnea al ingreso, mientras que solo 17% la presentaba al egreso (p < 0,0001). Hubo, asimismo, diferencias significativas en el requerimiento de oxígeno entre el ingreso y el egreso (p < 0,0001) y en el grado de dependencia medido en la escala de Barthel, teniendo dependencia total o grave al ingreso 55% de los pacientes y solo 3,4% al alta. Conclusiones: las intervenciones realizadas en la etapa subaguda de la enfermedad se asociaron con mejoras significativas en variables de interés clínico. Faltan más estudios para definir el rol y el momento exacto del inicio de los corticoides y la rehabilitación en este grupo de pacientes. (AU)


Introduction: In patients with severe or critical COVID-19, the use of prednisone and musculoskeletal and respiratory rehabilitation has been described. The role of these interventions and the optimal time for their initiation are not clearly established. This study presents the results of the Rehabilitation Unit of the Banco de Seguro del Estado Hospital, which implemented a comprehensive rehabilitation program and the use of corticosteroids in the subacute stage of patients with severe or critical post-COVID-19, with a systematic approach, working interdisciplinary and centered on the person being treated. Findings at admission, oxygen requirement, Barthel scale, tomographic patterns, use of corticosteroids, their response, and complications are reported. The results of this approach on clinical, respiratory, and functional variables are described. Method: Descriptive, retrospective study of post-COVID-19 patients who completed rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Unit of the Banco de Seguros del Estado Hospital (URHBSE) in the period April-August 2021. Data obtained from review of medical records, statistical analysis with PRISM (v8.2.1). Results: Eighty-four patients completed the rehabilitation program. Upon admission to the URHBSE, 55% had total or severe dependence on the Barthel scale. Forty-eight percent were unable to walk. Eighty-nine-point two percent required oxygen, with a mean saturation of 90.3 ± 4.8. Twenty-five percent of patients were admitted requiring a reservoir mask. All patients who entered the program were in the subacute phase of the disease (4 to 12 weeks) and received a comprehensive and individualized rehabilitation plan. The objective was to achieve a functional situation similar to what they had before COVID-19. The length of stay at the URHBSE was 23.5 ± 13.8 days. A total of 76 patients (90.5%) underwent high-resolution chest tomography (HRCT), which was pathological in 96.1% of cases. The predominant findings were ground-glass opacity in 49.3% of cases, consolidation in 8.23%, and a fibrosis-like pattern in 30.13%. "Non-typical" post-COVID damage tomographic alterations were detected (pleural effusion, cavitary nodules, apical cavities, etc.) in 11.8% of the tomographies. In 2 patients (2.6%), pulmonary aspergillosis was found, and in 6.6%, pulmonary thromboembolism. Forty-four patients (52.3%) received prednisone. In 63.4% of cases, oxygen supplementation was discontinued within the first 15 days from the start of prednisone. We found an association between the ground-glass opacity tomographic pattern and early discontinuation of oxygen supplementation from the start of prednisone (p = 0.047). Despite the high degree of colonization, we did not observe infections by colonizing microorganisms, even in those who used prednisone. Comparing admission and discharge, statistically significant differences were found in the following parameters: degree of dyspnea, oxygen requirement (only one patient was discharged with oxygen), saturation, degree of instrumentation (tracheostomy, nasogastric tube, etc.), and the Barthel dependency scale. Regarding respiratory variables, we only have data on the presence of dyspnea in the first 35 patients. Of these, 83% had dyspnea at admission, while only 17% had it at discharge (p < 0.0001). There were also significant differences in the oxygen requirement between admission and discharge (p < 0.0001) and in the degree of dependency measured on the Barthel scale. Fifty-five percent of patients had total or severe dependence at admission, compared to only 3.4% at discharge. Conclusions: The interventions carried out in the subacute stage of the disease were associated with significant improvements in clinical variables of interest. More studies are needed to define the role and the exact timing of the initiation of corticosteroids and rehabilitation in this group of patients.


Introdução: O uso de prednisona e reabilitação musculoesquelética e respiratória foi descrito no tratamento de pacientes com COVID-19 grave ou crítico. O papel destas intervenções e o momento ideal para o seu início não estão claramente estabelecidos. Este trabalho mostra os resultados da Unidade de Reabilitação Hospitalar do Banco de Seguro del Estado que implementou um programa abrangente de reabilitação e uso de corticosteroides na fase subaguda de pacientes graves ou críticos pós-COVID-19, com uma abordagem sistematizada, trabalhando de forma interdisciplinar e centrada no paciente. São relatados os achados na admissão, a necessidade de oxigênio, a escala de Barthel, os padrões tomográficos, o uso de corticosteroides, a resposta ao tratamento e as complicações. Os resultados desta abordagem sobre variáveis clínicas, respiratórias e funcionais são descritos. Material e métodos: Estudo descritivo e retrospectivo de pacientes pós-COVID-19 que completaram reabilitação na Unidade de Reabilitação do Hospital Banco de Seguros del Estado (URHBSE) no período de abril a agosto de 2021. Os dados foram obtidos dos prontuários de pacientes com posterior análise estatísticas usando PRISM (v8.2.1). Resultados: 84 pacientes completaram o programa de reabilitação. No momento da admissão na URHBSE, 55% apresentavam dependência total ou grave da escala de Barthel. 48% não conseguiam se mover. 89,2% necessitaram oxigênio com saturação média de 90,3 ± 4,8. 25% dos pacientes foram internados necessitando máscara com reservatório. Todos os pacientes que ingressaram no programa estavam na fase subaguda da doença (4 a 12 semanas) e receberam um plano de reabilitação abrangente e individualizado. O objetivo era alcançar uma situação funcional semelhante à que apresentavam antes da COVID-19. O tempo de permanência na URHBSE foi de 23,5±13,8 dias. A tomografia de tórax de alta resolução (TCAR) foi realizada em 76 pacientes (90,5%); os resultados foram patológicos em 96,1%. O vidro fosco predominou em 49,3% deles, a consolidação em 8,23% e o padrão fibroso em 30,13%. Alterações tomográficas "atípicas" de danos pós-COVID (derrame pleural, nódulos cavitados, cavidades apicais, etc.) foram detectadas em 11,8% dos exames tomográficos. Aspergilose pulmonar foi encontrada em 2,6% dos pacientes e tromboembolismo pulmonar em 6,6%. 44 pacientes (52,3%) receberam prednisona. Em 63,4% a oferta de oxigênio foi suspensa nos primeiros 15 dias após o início da mesma. Encontramos associação entre o padrão tomográfico em vidro fosco e a suspensão precoce da oferta de oxigênio desde o início da administração da prednisona (p = 0,047). Apesar do alto grau de colonização, mesmo naqueles que usaram prednisona, não observamos infecções. Em relação às variáveis respiratórias, só temos dados sobre a presença de dispneia nos primeiros 35 pacientes; destes, 83% apresentavam dispneia na admissão, enquanto apenas 17% a apresentavam na alta (p< 0,0001). Observou-se também diferenças significativas na necessidade de O2 entre a admissão e a alta (p< 0,0001) e no grau de dependência medido pela escala de Barthel, com 55% dos pacientes apresentando dependência total ou grave na admissão e apenas 3,4% na alta. Conclusões: As intervenções realizadas na fase subaguda da doença foram associadas a melhorias significativas nas variáveis de interesse clínico. São necessários mais estudos para definir o papel e o momento exato do início dos corticosteroides e da reabilitação neste grupo de pacientes.

Background: A heterogeneous geographic distribution of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) cases has been described, possibly, related to the presence of different environmental factors. The aim of the present study was to explore the geographical distribution of childhood ALL cases in Greater Mexico City (GMC). Methods: A population-based case-control study was conducted. Children <18 years old, newly diagnosed with ALL and residents of GMC were included. Controls were patients without leukemia recruited from second-level public hospitals, frequency-matched by sex, age, and health institution with the cases. The residence address where the patients lived during the last year before diagnosis (cases) or the interview (controls) was used for geolocation. Kulldorff's spatial scan statistic was used to detect spatial clusters (SCs). Relative risks (RR), associated p-value and number of cases included for each cluster were obtained. Results: A total of 1054 cases with ALL were analyzed. Of these, 408 (38.7%) were distributed across eight SCs detected. A relative risk of 1.61 (p<0.0001) was observed for the main cluster. Similar results were noted for the remaining seven ones. Additionally, a proximity between SCs, electrical installations and petrochemical facilities was observed. Conclusions: The identification of SCs in certain regions of GMC suggest the possible role of environmental factors in the etiology of childhood ALL.

Strawberries (Fragaria xannanasa) are susceptible to mechanical, physical, and physiological damage, which increases their incidence of rot during storage. Therefore, a method of protection is necessary in order to minimize quality losses. One way to achieve this is by applying polymer coatings. In this study, multisystem coatings were created based on polymer nanocapsules loaded with Lippia graveolens essential oil, and it was found to have excellent optical, mechanical, and water vapor barrier properties compared to the control (coating formed with alginate and with nanoparticles without the essential oil). As for the strawberries coated with the multisystem formed from the polymer nanocapsules loaded with the essential oil of Lippia graveolens, these did not present microbial growth and only had a loss of firmness of 17.02% after 10 days of storage compared to their initial value. This study demonstrated that the multisystem coating formed from the polymer nanocapsules loaded with the essential oil of Lippia graveolens could be a viable alternative to preserve horticultural products for longer storage periods.

Bacterial isolated from rhizospheric soil associated with the semi-desertic plant Coronilla juncea L. were screened for 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate deaminase (ACCD) activity, a common trait for plant-growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Among bacterial isolates, strain DBA51 showed phosphate solubilizing index (PSI), producing indole acetic acid (IAA), and with the hemolysis-negative test. Sequencing and analysis of the 16S rDNA gene identified DBA51 as Enterobacter. DBA51 did not show antagonistic activity in vitro against bacterial (Clavibacter michiganensis, Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato DC3000 and Pectobacterium cacticidum FHLGJ22) and fungal phytopathogens (Alternaria sp., Fusarium oxysporum fsp. lycopersici, Fusarium oxysporum fsp. cubense M5, and Rhizoctonia sp.). Root inoculations with DBA51 in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants were performed under greenhouse conditions. Plant height (20 %) and root biomass (40 %) were significantly enhanced in tomato plants inoculated with DBA51 compared to non-inoculated plants, although for tobacco plants, only root biomass (27 %) showed significant differences with DBA51. In addition, physiological parameters such as photosynthetic rate (µmol CO2 m-2 s-1), stomatal conductance (mol H2O m-2 s-1), and transpiration rate (mmol H2O m-2 s-1) were also evaluated, and no differences were detected between DBA51-inoculated and control treatment in tomato and tobacco leaves. The observed results indicate that the DBA51 strain could be used as a biofertilizer to improve yields of horticultural crops.

High-intensity ultrasound (HIU) can modify muscle structure, leading to improvements in tenderness. However, factors such as packing type and muscle complexity may attenuate the acoustic cavitation. In this research, the effect of packing thickness (40.6-70 µm) on the quality of bovine Gluteus medius and Biceps femoris treated with HIU (37 kHz, 90 W/cm2, 40 min) was evaluated. The hardness of G. medius decreased significantly as the thickness of the packing bag decreased. The wide interfibrillar and intermyofibrillar spaces corroborated the tenderizing effect. These effects are related to damage of cell structure and changes in the collagen content (3.37 ± 0.1 µg/mL). In addition, the HIU decrease the variability in the water holding capacity of the muscle produced by the use of low thickness bags during storage. The trained sensory panel described the sonicated samples in 50.8 µm bags as less hard and juicier. Contrarily, in B. femoris no significant effects were reported in the variables evaluated. B. femoris is a white muscle, with a high amount of collagen (3.59 ± 0.1 µg/mL) and little intramuscular fat. Consequently, the effect of the HIU on muscle quality is associated with the composition of the muscle fibers and the thickness of the packing bag. HIU application is recommended to improve the quality of leg muscles whenever low-thickness bags (50.8 µm or less) are used.
