BACKGROUND: Light control technology has been developed and studied for decades in controlled environment agriculture (CEA) for successful crop production. The effects of the light spectrum on plant growth can vary because plants have spectral specific responses, and mixed light elicits interactive combination effects. Response surface methodology (RSM) can be utilized with the design of experiments to optimize a response influenced by multiple inputs with limited data. In this study, we aimed to identify the optimal photon ratio in combination of red (R), green (G), and blue (B) light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for growing lettuce seedlings using RSM and a seedling-indicating parameter by performing a similarity analysis of response surfaces that elucidated the response tendency of different factors, such as light quality. RESULTS: The highest shoot fresh weight was obtained from the R treatment (red LED 100%) at the end of the seedling stage. However, the RGB141 (photon ratio of R:G:B = 1:4:1) treatment during the seedling stage resulted in the highest shoot fresh weight at the final harvest. The value of the leaf area multiplied by the leaf chlorophyll concentration (SPAD) was selected as the seedling-indicating parameter. The optimal RGB photon ratio that maximized this parameter was R:G:B = 30.6:44.0:25.4, and this ratio was verified by conducting identical cultivation experiments. During the first 6 days after transplanting, SPAD gradually increased in R-treated seedlings, while the optimal treatment maintained the value at a higher constant level, which supported our result of shoot fresh weight at harvest. CONCLUSIONS: Thus, we confirmed that the mixture design method allowed us to optimize the combined RGB photon ratios for the seedling stage in order to maximize the growth index of mature lettuce plants and to select an appropriate seedling-indicating parameter that represents the final harvest results to benefit crop production in CEA.

BACKGROUND: Augmented reality (AR) technology has been shown to be effective in displaying information and presenting three-dimensional objects. Although AR applications are commonly used by learners via mobile devices, plastic models or two-dimensional images are still commonly used in tooth carving practice. Learners practicing tooth carving face a challenge due to the three-dimensional features of teeth as there is a lack of tools available that provide sequential guidance. In this study, we developed an AR-based tooth carving practice tool (AR-TCPT) and compared it to a plastic model to evaluate its potential as a practice tool as well as its user experience. METHODS: To model tooth carving, we created a three-dimensional object from sequential steps that included the maxillary canines and maxillary first premolars (16 steps), mandibular first premolars (13 steps), and mandibular first molars (14 steps). Image markers, created using Photoshop software, were assigned to each tooth. An AR-based mobile application was developed using the Unity engine. For tooth carving, 52 participants were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 26; using a plastic tooth model) or an experimental group (n = 26; using the AR-TCPT). User experience was evaluated using a 22-item questionnaire. Data were comparatively analyzed using the nonparametric Mann-Whitney U test via the SPSS program. RESULTS: The AR-TCPT detects image markers with the mobile device camera and displays three-dimensional objects for tooth fragmentation. Users can manipulate the device to view each step or examine the shape of a tooth. The results of the user experience survey revealed that the AR-TCPT experimental group scored significantly higher in tooth carving experience compared with the control group that used the plastic model. CONCLUSION: Compared with the conventional plastic model, the AR-TCPT provided a better user experience for tooth carving. The tool is highly accessible as it is designed to be used on mobile devices by users. Further studies are required to determine the educational impact of the AR-TCTP on quantitative scoring of carved teeth as well as individual user's carving abilities.

This study aimed to examine the anti-diabetic effect of germinated waxy black rice (GWBR) using streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. In the diabetic rats, GWBR supplementation for 8 weeks reduced plasma blood glucose concentrations, improved glucose clearance and prevented diabetes-induced weight loss. Rats with STZ-induced diabetes who received GWBR supplementation exhibited decreased expression of sodium-dependent glucose transporter 1 (SGLT1) and glucose transporter (GLUT) 2 genes and proteins in the small intestine via decreases in hepatocyte nuclear factor (HNF)-1α, HNF-1ß, and HNF-4α, transcriptional factors that are involved in the regulation of SGLT1 and GLUT2, compared with the rats with STZ-induced diabetes that did not receive GWBR supplements. GWBR supplementation also enhanced the expression of GLUT4 and the genes and proteins involved in GLUT4 translocation, such as insulin receptor (IR) and insulin receptor substrate 1 (IRS1), and increased the phosphorylation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase B (PKB, Akt) proteins in skeletal muscle. GWBR further increased glycogen synthase (GS) 1 by decreasing glycogen synthase kinase (GSK)-3ß in skeletal muscle. Interestingly, GWBR recovered STZ-impaired pancreatic ß-cells, resulting in increased insulin synthesis and secretion. In addition, GWBR reduced serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, aspartate transferase and alanine transferase concentrations and increased high-density lipoprotein cholesterol concentrations. Taken together, these findings suggest that GWBR could be a candidate for improving the diabetic condition by regulating glucose uptake in the intestine and muscle and regulating the secretion of insulin from the pancreas.

This study was conducted to provide a narrative overview of interactions between smoking and drug effectiveness/ pharmacokinetics. Database searches were performed to identify review articles published prior to March 10, 2013. Eligible articles reporting altered pharmacokinetic profiles, drug response, or adverse drug effects due to drug-smoking interactions were selected. Information on mechanism of action and clinical effects from the selected articles (n = 83) were summarized by therapeutic drug class. For cardiovascular drugs, smoking effects were variable. Smoking reduced aspirin response but increased clopidogrel response by increasing active metabolites. Warfarin, which has a narrow therapeutic range, required dosage adjustment in smokers due to its rapid clearance. Smoking is a risk factor for respiratory disease, leading to a lower response to corticosteroid and requiring increased doses or additional drugs. Higher doses of theophylline and some antipsychotics, which are mainly metabolized by CYP1A2, are required to reach an optimal plasma concentration in smokers. Smoking is also a risk factor for cancer, especially for lung cancer. Erlotinib or gefitinib are epidermal growth factor receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) for lung cancer and showed lower anticancer effects in smokers. This summary of the interactions between smoking and drug pharmacological properties will aid healthcare professionals in providing patients with appropriate drug therapies, and emphasizes the need for considering smoking status as a patient factor in the clinical setting.

Spinal cord injury leads to the permanent loss of motor and sensory function in the body. To enhance spinal cord regeneration, we used a hyaluronic acid-based hydrogel as a three-dimensional biomimetic scaffold for peptides and growth factors. Three components were used to provide guidance cues: a matrix metalloproteinase peptide crosslinker, an IKVAV (Ile- Lys-Val-Ala-Val) peptide derived from laminin, and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). Human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were cultured in hydrogels in vitro for 10 days to induce neuronal differentiation of hMSCs. Based on gene-expression data, the matrix metalloproteinase-sensitive peptide, IKVAV peptide, and BDNF were critical in the differentiation of hMSCs. Remodeling activity was found to be a key factor in guiding neural differentiation of stem cells. To test this approach in vivo, we used the spinal cord injured rat model and five different hydrogel compositions. Samples were injected into the intrathecal space, and animals were monitored for 6 weeks. Compared to all other groups, animals injected with BDNF-containing hydrogels showed the greatest improvement on locomotive tests (Basso-Beattie-Bresnahan score) during the initial stage after injury. These results suggest that hyaluronic acid-based hydrogels containing IKVAV and BDNF create microenvironments that foster differentiation of stem cells along the neural cell lineage, and they could be used to facilitate nerve regeneration after spinal cord injury.
