RESUMEN

Bioelectric medicine (BEM) refers to the use of electrical signals to modulate the electrical activity of cells and tissues in the body for therapeutic purposes. In this review, we particularly focused on the microcurrent stimulation (MCS), because, this can take place at the cellular level with sub-sensory application unlike other stimuli. These extremely low-level currents mimic the body's natural electrical activity and are believed to promote various physiological processes. To date, MCS has limited use in the field of BEM with applications in several therapeutic purposes. However, recent studies provide hopeful signs that MCS is more scalable and widely applicable than what has been used so far. Therefore, this review delves into the landscape of MCS, shedding light on the multifaceted applications and untapped potential of MCS in the realm of healthcare. Particularly, we summarized the hierarchical mediation from cell to whole body responses by MCS including its physiological applications. Our final objective of this review is to contribute to the growing body of literature that unveils the captivating potential of BEM, with MCS poised at the intersection of technological innovation and the intricacies of the human body.

RESUMEN

Iris segmentation is an initial step for identifying the biometrics of animals when establishing a traceability system for livestock. In this study, we propose a deep learning framework for pixel-wise segmentation of bovine iris with a minimized use of annotation labels utilizing the BovineAAEyes80 public dataset. The proposed image segmentation framework encompasses data collection, data preparation, data augmentation selection, training of 15 deep neural network (DNN) models with varying encoder backbones and segmentation decoder DNNs, and evaluation of the models using multiple metrics and graphical segmentation results. This framework aims to provide comprehensive and in-depth information on each model's training and testing outcomes to optimize bovine iris segmentation performance. In the experiment, U-Net with a VGG16 backbone was identified as the optimal combination of encoder and decoder models for the dataset, achieving an accuracy and dice coefficient score of 99.50% and 98.35%, respectively. Notably, the selected model accurately segmented even corrupted images without proper annotation data. This study contributes to the advancement of iris segmentation and the establishment of a reliable DNN training framework.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Patient perception is a key element in improving compliance with medications for osteoporosis. This study evaluated the awareness, perception, sources of information, and knowledge of osteoporosis among Korean women with osteoporosis. METHODS: A questionnaire survey was conducted from July 22, 2021 to 13 August 2021. Patients who were followed up in endocrinology (Endo), orthopedic surgery (OS), and gynecology (GY) were recruited (N=40, 40, and 20 in each group). Patients were allocated according to their age, as follows: 15, 15, and 10 patients in their 60s, 70s, and 80s for Endo and OS, and 10 and 10 patients in their 60s and 70s for GY. The questionnaire was composed of the following topics: patient journey to the hospital, drug-related issues, communication with medical doctors, patient knowledge, and sources of information about osteoporosis. RESULTS: The results of medical check-ups were the most common reason for patient visits to the hospital for an initial diagnosis of osteoporosis (61%). A knowledge gap regarding mortality, refracture, and drug-induced osteoporosis was observed. Doctors were the most preferred and trustful source of information, while health-related TV shows were the second most common source of information. Patients with OS reported lower perceived severity and higher drug discontinuation, along with a higher proportion of fractures, as the initial reasons for hospital visits for osteoporosis. CONCLUSIONS: Variations in perceptions according to the issue and group were identified. These should be considered during patient consultations to improve compliance with osteoporosis treatment.

RESUMEN

The analysis of AR is widely used to detect loss of acrosome in sperm, but the subjective decisions of experts affect the accuracy of the examination. Therefore, we develop an ARCS for objectivity and consistency of analysis using convolutional neural networks (CNNs) trained with various magnification images. Our models were trained on 215 microscopic images at 400× and 438 images at 1000× magnification using the ResNet 50 and Inception-ResNet v2 architectures. These models distinctly recognized micro-changes in the PM of AR sperms. Moreover, the Inception-ResNet v2-based ARCS achieved a mean average precision of over 97%. Our system's calculation of the AR ratio on the test dataset produced results similar to the work of the three experts and could do so more quickly. Our model streamlines sperm detection and AR status determination using a CNN-based approach, replacing laborious tasks and expert assessments. The ARCS offers consistent AR sperm detection, reduced human error, and decreased working time. In conclusion, our study suggests the feasibility and benefits of using a sperm diagnosis artificial intelligence assistance system in routine practice scenarios.

RESUMEN

In this study, we presented flat-topped coherent supercontinuum lasers with tunable repetition rates and programmable spectral bandwidths. Supercontinuum sources with ultra-broadband and high-repetition-rate coverage can be achieved by merging nonlinearly broadened electro-optic optical frequency combs with optical line-by-line spectrum shaping. Spectral bandwidth programming is implemented by iterative spectrum shaping and input power control of highly nonlinear stages, whereas repetition rate tuning is performed by modulation speed control in optical frequency combs. Herein, we implemented a programmable and tunable flat-topped supercontinuum with a maximum bandwidth and repetition rate of 55 nm at 10 dB and 50 GHz, respectively. To clarify the coherence of the supercontinuum during tuning and programming, we performed a phase-noise analysis. We proposed a remarkably modified self-heterodyne method to measure the phase noise of each mode precisely by filtering specific supercontinuum taps in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. With this method, it has been proved that the single-sideband spectra in each mode are almost similar to that of the RF clock, indicating that our programmable and tunable supercontinuum generation process added minimal degradation to the phase noise properties. This study shows possibilities for generating hundreds of programmable and tunable flat-topped optical carriers with robustness and coherence.

RESUMEN

Biomolecular condensates participate in diverse cellular processes, ranging from gene regulation to stress survival. Bottom-up engineering of synthetic condensates advances our understanding of the organizing principle of condensates. It also enables the synthesis of artificial systems with novel functions. However, building synthetic condensates with a predictable organization and function remains challenging. Here, we use DNA as a building block to create synthetic condensates that are assembled through phase separation. The programmability of intermolecular interactions between DNA molecules enables the control over various condensate properties including assembly, composition, and function. Similar to the way intracellular condensates are organized, DNA clients are selectively partitioned into cognate condensates. We demonstrate that the synthetic condensates can accelerate DNA strand displacement reactions and logic gate operation by concentrating specific reaction components. We envision that the DNA-based condensates could help the realization of the high-order functions required to build more life-like artificial systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The antifungal efficacy of cold atmospheric microwave plasma (CAMP) against Malassezia pachydermatis has not been to be evaluated. OBJECTIVE: To examine the antifungal effects of CAMP against M. pachydermatis and its synergistic effects with chlorhexidine gluconate (CHX). METHODS: A M. pachydermatis isolate was collected from a dog with otitis externa and Malassezia dermatitis at the Seoul National University Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital. The antifungal effect was determined by applying CAMP to a M. pachydermatis isolate that was incubated for 3 days at 37°C. After 1, 2, 3 and 5 min of application, the efficacy of the plasma treatment was determined according to the number of colony forming units (CFUs). A mixture consisting of inoculum and CHX was applied to evaluate the synergistic effect of the plasma treatment in the same way. RESULTS: The application of CAMP showed significant antifungal effects against M. pachydermatis. The antifungal effect of CAMP was enhanced by an increased exposure time and output power. The application of CAMP with 0.02% and 0.2% CHX resulted in lower survival rates against M. pachydermatis when compared with its sole application at 1 or 2 min. CONCLUSIONS: The study findings demonstrate that CAMP has a potential as a new antifungal option for M. pachydermatis and has synergistic antifungal effects with CHX in vitro. Clinical applications for CAMP are necessary to assess the antifungal efficacy for patients.

RESUMEN

Phase separation of biomolecules plays key roles in physiological compartmentalization as well as pathological aggregation. A deeper understanding of biomolecular phase separation requires dissection of a relation between intermolecular interactions and resulting phase behaviors. DNA nanostars, multivalent DNA assemblies of which sticky ends define attractive interactions, represent an ideal system to probe this fundamental relation governing phase separation processes. Here, we use DNA nanostars to systematically study how structural flexibility exhibited by interacting species impacts their phase behaviors. We design multiple nanostars with a varying degree of flexibility using single-stranded gaps of different lengths in the arm of each nanostar unit. We find that structural flexibility drastically alters the phase diagram of DNA nanostars in such a way that the phase separation of more flexible structures is strongly inhibited. This result is not due to self-inhibition from the loss of valency but rather ascribed to a generic flexibility-driven change in the thermodynamics of the system. Our work provides not only potential regulatory mechanisms cells may exploit to dynamically control intracellular phase separation but also a route to build synthetic systems of which assembly can be controlled in a signal dependent manner.

RESUMEN

A bi-focal integral floating system using a geometrical phase (GP) lens can provide switchable integrated spaces with enhanced three-dimensional (3D) augmented reality (AR) depth expression. However, due to the chromatic aberration properties of the GP lens implemented for the switchable depth-floating 3D images, the floated 3D AR images with the red/green/blue (R/G/B) colors are formed at different depth locations with different magnification effects, which causes color breaking. In this paper, we propose a novel technique to resolve the color breaking problem by integrating the R/G/B elemental images with compensated depths and sizes along with experiments to demonstrate the improved results. When we evaluated the color differences of the floated 3D AR images based on CIEDE2000, the experimental results of the depth-switchable integral floating 3D AR images showed that the color accuracies were greatly improved after applying a pre-compensation scheme to the R/G/B sub-images in both concave and convex lens operation modes of the bi-focal switching GP floating lens.

RESUMEN

We present an electrically controllable fast-switching virtual-moving microlens array (MLA) consisting of a stacked structure of two polarization-dependent microlens arrays (PDMLAs) with optical orthogonality, where the position of the two stacked PDMLAs is shifted by half the elemental pitch in the diagonal direction. By controlling the polarization of the incident light without the physical movement of the molecules comprising the virtual-moving MLA, the periodic sampling position of the MLA can be switched fast using a polarization-switching layer based on a fast-switching liquid crystal cell. Using the fast-switching virtual-moving MLA, the spatial-resolution-enhanced light-field (LF) imaging system was demonstrated without a decrease in the angular sampling resolution as compared to the conventional LF imaging system comprising a passive MLA; two sets of elemental image arrays were captured quickly owing to the short switching time of the virtual-moving MLA of 450 µs. From the two captured sets of the elemental array image, four-times resolution-enhanced reconstruction images of the directional-view and depth-slice images could be obtained.

RESUMEN

The video recording-capable compact incoherent digital holographic camera system is proposed. The system consists of the linear polarizer, convex lens, geometric phase lens, and the polarized image sensor. The Fresnel hologram is recorded by this simple configuration in real time. The system parameters are analyzed and evaluated to record a better-quality hologram in a compact form-factor. The real-time holographic recording and its digitally reconstructed video playback are demonstrated with the proposed system.

RESUMEN

We demonstrated a 2D/3D switchable mobile display using a polarization-dependent switching liquid crystalline polymeric (LCP) lens array film. In spite of short viewing distance and enough viewing window conditions provided by a small f-number lens for mobile displays, the 3D images when switched to the multi-view 3D mode showed a low crosstalk property owing to the improved lens aberration, as applying an aspherical lens curvature interface between the planar-convex LCP layer and the concave-planar isotropic polymer layer. Both 2D and 3D images were demonstrated based on a 5.5-inch quad high definition mobile display panel, where the binocular crosstalk of the 3D mode was 3.3%.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] Respiratory physiotherapy is an effective approach to improving lung function in patient, including athletes with respiratory dysfunction caused by sports injury. The purpose of this study was to analyze the differences in the respirograms between taekwondo poomsae athletes and nonathletes according to the respirogram phase. [Subjects and Methods] Respiratory measurements for 13 elite taekwondo poomsae athletes were obtained. Respiratory function was measured using spirometry while the participant was seated. [Results] In respirogram phasic analysis, the inspiratory area of forced vital capacity were significantly increased in the athletes than in the nonathletes. The slopes of the forced vital capacity for athletes at slopes 1, 2, and 3 of the A area were significantly higher than those for the nonathletes. In correlation analysis, chest circumference was significantly correlated with slope 1 of the A area of the forced vital capacity. [Conclusion] Results indicate that differences in respirogram phasic changes between athletes and nonathletes may contribute to better understanding of respiratory function, which is important to sports physiotherapy research.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] Strength-duration (SD) curves are used in electrical diagnosis by physiotherapists to confirm muscle degeneration. However, the usefulness of SD curves in comparing muscle degeneration in DJ-1 homozygous knockout (DJ-1(-/-)) and wild-type mice (DJ-1(+/+)) is not yet fully understood. The electrical properties of the gastrocnemius muscles of DJ-1(-/-) and DJ-1(+/+) mice were compared in the current study. [Subjects and Methods] The electrode of an electrical stimulator was applied to the gastrocnemius muscle to measure the rheobase until the response of contractive muscle to electrical stimulation became visible in mice. [Results] The rheobase of DJ-1(-/-) mice showed a significant increase in a time-dependent manner, compared to that of DJ-1(+/+) mice. [Conclusion] These results demonstrate that the DJ-1 protein may be implicated in the regulation of neuromuscular activity of gastrocnemius muscles of mice.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] This study was performed to investigate the difference in body pressure-related sensory changes between the floor and mattress in a static supine position for physiotherapy research. [Subjects and Methods] To analyze body pressure, the Body Pressure Measurement System was used. Body pressure sensors were attached to mattresses and the floor beneath the subjects. The level of pain was evaluated using pain score tools before the static supine position was adopted, at 1, 5, 10, and 15 min, and in total for specific body points. [Results] In analysis of digitized images, there was no significant difference observed between floor and mattress body pressure values at the start position. However, the head pressure intensity was significantly higher than that of the other body parts. In analysis of pain scores, all body part pain scores except those for both legs were significantly higher for the floor than for the mattress. Furthermore, the pain scores of the floor group were significantly increased at minute 1 compared with those of the mattress group. [Conclusion] These results suggest that properties that change in a time-dependent manner and postural changes need to be carefully considered when applying physical therapy.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] Respiratory function is important for patients including athletes who require physical therapy for respiratory dysfunction. The purpose of the present study was to analyze the differences in the respirograms between Korean wrestling athletes and nonathletes according to phase for the study of sports physiotherapy. [Subjects and Methods] Respiratory function was measured using spirometry in both the athletes and nonathletes while they were in a sitting position. [Results] Spirometry parameters in the athletes were significantly higher than in the nonathletes. In respirogram phasic analysis, the expiratory area and total area of forced vital capacity were significantly increased in the athletes compared with the nonathletes. The slopes of the forced vital capacity for athletes at slopes 1, 2, and 3 of the A area were significantly increased. In correlative analysis, chest circumference was significantly correlated with slope 3 of the A area of the forced vital capacity. [Conclusion] The results suggest that the differences in changes in the phases of the respirogram between the Korean wrestling athletes and nonathletes may in part contribute to our understanding of respiratory function in sports physiotherapy research.

RESUMEN

We examined whether the level of hospital-based healthcare technology was related to the 30-day postoperative mortality rates, after adjusting for hospital volume, of ischemic stroke patients who underwent a cerebrovascular surgical procedure. Using the National Health Insurance Service-Cohort Sample Database, we reviewed records from 2002 to 2013 for data on patients with ischemic stroke who underwent cerebrovascular surgical procedures. Statistical analysis was performed using Cox proportional hazard models to test our hypothesis. A total of 798 subjects were included in our study. After adjusting for hospital volume of cerebrovascular surgical procedures as well as all for other potential confounders, the hazard ratio (HR) of 30-day mortality in low healthcare technology hospitals as compared to high healthcare technology hospitals was 2.583 (P < 0.001). We also found that, although the HR of 30-day mortality in low healthcare technology hospitals with high volume as compared to high healthcare technology hospitals with high volume was the highest (10.014, P < 0.0001), cerebrovascular surgical procedure patients treated in low healthcare technology hospitals had the highest 30-day mortality rate, irrespective of hospital volume. Although results of our study provide scientific evidence for a hospital volume/30-day mortality rate relationship in ischemic stroke patients who underwent cerebrovascular surgical procedures, our results also suggest that the level of hospital-based healthcare technology is associated with mortality rates independent of hospital volume. Given these results, further research into what components of hospital-based healthcare technology significantly impact mortality is warranted.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between muscle activity and gait function following aquatic trunk exercise in hemiplegic stroke patients. [Subjects and Methods] This study's participants included thirteen hemiplegic patients (ten males and three females). The aquatic therapy consisted of administering concentrative aquatic therapy for four weeks in a therapeutic pool. Gait parameters were measured using a gait analysis system adjusted to each subject's comfortable walking speed. Electromyographic signals were measured for the rectus abdominis, external abdominal oblique, transversus abdominis/internal-abdominal oblique, and erector spine of each patients. [Results] The pre- and post-training performances of the transversus abdominis/internal-abdominal oblique were compared statistically. There was no statistical difference between the patients' pre- and post-training values of maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the rectus abdominis, but the external abdominal oblique values tended to improve. Furthermore, gait factors improved significantly in terms of walking speeds, walking cycles, affected-side stance phases, affected-stride lengths, and stance-phase symmetry indices, respectively. [Conclusion] These results suggest that the trunk exercise during aquatic therapy may in part contribute to clinically relevant improvements in muscle activities and gait parameters.

RESUMEN

[Purpose] The purpose of the present study was to elucidate the muscle conditions such as the isokinetic muscle of Korean ssireum athletes. [Subjects and Methods] This study enrolled 25 elite ssireum athletes. We measured body composition and peak torque at an angular speed at 60°/s using an isokinetic muscle strength dynamometer. [Results] The lean body mass of the left upper limb was significantly higher than that of the right upper limb. However, the lean body mass of the left lower limb was significantly lower than that of the right lower limb. The peak torque for left elbow flexion was significantly higher than that for right elbow flexion. Conversely, the peak torque for left elbow extension was significantly lower than that for right elbow extension. Furthermore, the peak torque for the left knee was significantly lower than that for the right knee for both flexion and extension. [Conclusion] The data from this study elucidate in part the muscle conditions of Korean ssireum athletes, which can be used to establish a reference for the scientific study of sports physiotherapy.
