RESUMEN

The spectrum of transvaginal sonographic findings was evaluated in 37 surgically proved endometriomas. Sonographic features assessed included lesion size, acoustic enhancement, wall thickness, wall contour, presence of a fluid-fluid level, and presence of internal echoes. A very characteristic finding seen in 31 (82%) cases is the presence of a homogeneous hypoechoic "carpet" of low-level echoes. This may be present diffusely or in one or several loculations of a multiloculated cystic mass. We consider this finding characteristic of an endometrioma, although not pathognomonic, as on occasion we have encountered other pathologic conditions that have the same appearance.

RESUMEN

Transvaginal pelvic ultrasonography has recently been shown to be of value in assessing female pelvic anatomy, allowing the sonographer to scan from a plane of orientation 90 degrees to the conventional transabdominal scanning plane. Follicle and cyst measurements using the transvaginal technique were compared with conventional transabdominal measurements in 26 patients. No clinical difference was demonstrated between the accuracy of transvaginal follicle or cyst size measurements and the accuracy of measurements obtained by transabdominal scanning. Therefore, measurements of follicles or cysts obtained by the transvaginal technique may be used for patient management.

RESUMEN

Several of the most commonly used ultrasound coupling gels were found to adversely affect sperm motility. These gels should not be used in patients undergoing insemination immediately after a transvaginal pelvic ultrasonographic examination. Instead, we recommend the use of Proception Sperm Nutrient Douche, Nutrient Mixture F-10 (HAM), or nonlubrication of the condom-covered transducer.

RESUMEN

A case of 99m Tc-pyrophosphate uptake in an islet cell tumor of the pancreas is presented. A possible relationship of pyrophosphate uptake in this tumor with uptake in other neuroectodermal tumors which are of neural crest origin is considered.
