RESUMEN

Although Japanese tourists in Hawaii are infrequently treated for acute psychiatric emergencies, we observed several cases among Japanese honeymooners. To investigate this phenomenon, we retrospectively and prospectively collected such cases of honeymooners. Sixteen cases of acute psychiatric disturbance in Japanese honeymooners in Hawaii are described. This phenomenon occurs more frequently than in other Japanese tourists or non-Japanese honeymooners. The tradition of arranged marriage and other cultural factors may be associated with the potential for "honeymoon psychosis."

RESUMEN

Investigations were directed toward inhibition of an aminopeptidase, isolated from rat brain, which has been implicated in the metabolic inactivation of enkephalins. The design rationale and synthesis of novel peptidyl diamino thiol inhibitors of rat brain aminopeptidase are presented, along with accompanying structure-activity analysis. Some of the reported compounds are highly active aminopeptidase inhibitors and possess enzyme inhibitory potency in the nanomolar range (62; I50 = 1 nM). Analysis of the data permits speculations on possible modes of binding of diamino thiols to aminopeptidase. Other investigations were directed toward understanding the mode of enzyme binding of the naturally occurring aminopeptidase inhibitor bestatin. On the basis of published models of enzyme binding, replacement of the C-2 hydroxyl group of bestatin by a sulfhydryl group was anticipated to lead to enhanced inhibition due to a strengthened interaction of this group with enzymic zinc. Contrary to expectations, "thiobestatin" inhibited rat brain aminopeptidase with only the same degree of effectiveness as the corresponding alcohol. Speculations on the possible mode of enzyme-inhibitor binding of bestatin are offered.

RESUMEN

A new amino alcohol modification designed to mimic the putative transition-state of amide bond cleavage by proteolytic enzymes has been incorporated into the scissile bond position of N-benzoyl-Phe-Ala-Pro, a known substrate of angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE). The resulting modified tripeptides (i.e. 4) are shown to be a new class of potent inhibitors of converting enzyme.

RESUMEN

The authors point out that a very successful psychotherapeutic treatment method, autogenic training, shows some trends in its development which require some thought. Basing on the technique theoretically and experimentally developed by J. H. Schultz the authors examine different questions in connection with autogenic training: The "autogenic" question, the commercialization and the application of biofeedback techniques in autogenic training therapy. Further the relationship between autogenic training and analytical methods are studied: autogenic neutralisation, daydream techniques (katathymes Bilderleben), doubletrack psychotherapy etc. are being discussed. The authors show that optimal results can be obtained from autogenic training only if combined with an analytical method.

RESUMEN

From results of the study of 37 patients with cardiac neurosis, new conceptual relationships to explain this condition are developed. Cardiac neurosis is explained as a disturbance of the "psycho-neurovegetative self-regulation mechanism" (servomechanisms). The authors show how such a conception, which has been borrowed from the servomechanism technique, may favourably influence the diagnosis and therapy of this condition. It has been tried in that way to link the two opposites: organic and functional causes. Some therapeutic approaches adapted to the structure of everyday general medical practice are suggested.

RESUMEN

First some methodical peculiarities of autogenic training are described, insisting specially on the "basic exercises of autogenic training", pointing out their advantages. Then the increasing importance of autogenic training for children is stressed, showing several variations in the practice of it. The very great importance of the psychohygienic dimension of autogenic training is pointed out showing how this method may substantially contribute to the reduction of costs in medical treatment. Finally the connection of autogenic states producing methods, like autogenic training and graduated active hypnosis, is described and the advantages of such a double-track psychotherapy are shown. Adequately used the method may contribute to a shortening of the treatment with a corresponding lowering of costs, without at least hindering the depth of analysis.
