RESUMEN

An association of HTLV-I virus with myelomonocytic leukemia was established by serologic and molecular-biologic procedures. Antibodies to one or two HTLV-I proteins were identified in 10 out of 30 patients with myelomonocytic leukemia; both antibodies to certain HTLV-I proteins and an integrated provirus were detected in 3 cases. Upon examination of donor blood, antibodies to one or two HTLV-I proteins were found in 0.8% cases, but only 0.3% of the examined donors were found positive to HTLV-I. This finding points to the presence of said virus in the population of Latvia.

RESUMEN

Molecular cloning has been done of DNA isolated from leukocytes of a patient with T-cell prolymphocytic leukemia. Three HTLV-I-containing recombinant clones have been obtained and their restriction-hybridization analysis performed. None of the clones contained a complete HTLV-I provirus. In all clones, there have been detected nucleotide sequences corresponding to the provirus env-pX-3' LTR region.

RESUMEN

Serologic and molecular biologic techniques were used to identify association of HTLV-1 with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma as well as with B-cell leukemia. HTLV-1 markers (antibodies and integrated provirus) were identified in all lympho- and myeloproliferative diseases, while integrated provirus genome--in T-cell population only.

RESUMEN

The antigen-independent radioimmunoassay for the detection of HBsAg is presented. The principle of this method is the inhibition of the reaction of binding idiotype antibodies and tracer anti-idiotype antibodies by the competing HBsAg. The antigen-independent competition radioimmunoassay is specific and has 80-100 ng/ml-1 of HBsAg sensitivity.

RESUMEN

Three fragments of cellular DNA containing integrated hepatitis B virus (HBV) sequences have been cloned from the genomic library of a PLC/PRF/5 cell line. The complete nucleotide sequences of the HBV DNA inserts have been determined, including the S gene and the cellular flanking DNA. Viral sequences were found to be fragmented and rearranged. The nucleotide sequences of the HBV-HBV and HBV-human DNA junctions in two of the clones were precisely the same as described by others for the analogous HBV-DNA inserts, providing direct evidence for the stability of HBV-DNA integration pattern and sequence in the genome of the PLC/PRF/5 line. Two clones contain the HBV surface antigen gene which is well conserved. According to the amino acid sequence it could be related to the adw subtype. HBV DNA and contiguous human sequences in HC217 clone are flanked by the cellular perfect inverted repeat of at least 3.5 kb. Similar sequences have been found in the genome of the original PLC/PRF/5 cell line and human placental DNA.

RESUMEN

The electron microscopic examinations of the short-term cultures of mononuclear cells from patients with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia were conducted for the detection of viral particles. The viral particles which correspond in their morphology to C type retroviruses are observed in the intercellular space of the culture.

RESUMEN

The leukemogenic properties of bovine leukemia virus (BLV), isolated from blood plasma, milk and short-term cultures of blood-circulating leukocytes were studied. A complex life-time examination of 14 calves inoculated with a preparation of BLV established leukemia in 4 animals; it was suspected in 3 calves. By the present time leukemia has been morphologically established in 6 out of 13 calves and one was a suspect. Positive results point directly to the viral etiology of bovine leukemia.

RESUMEN

The karyotypes of peripheral blood lymphocytes were examined in 72 hour cultures in the process of the induced lymphatic leucaemia development in calves, as well as the karyotypes of one-layer transplantated tissue cultures of blood cells and lymph nodules of the same calves. The increase in hyperdiploid cell ratio in all investigated tissue cultures was detected.
