RESUMEN

Reckless release of contaminants into the environment causes pollution in various aquatic systems on a global scale. Biochar is potentially an inexpensive and environmentally friendly adsorbent for removing contaminants from water. Ball milling has been used to enhance biochar's functionality; however, global analysis of the effect of ball milling on biochar's capacity to adsorb contaminants in aqueous solutions has not yet been done. Here, we conducted a meta-analysis to investigate the effects of ball milling on the adsorption/removal capacity of biochar for contaminants in aqueous solutions, and to investigate whether ball milling effects are related to biochar production, ball milling, and other experimental variables. Overall, ball milling significantly increased biochar adsorption capacity towards both inorganic and organic contaminants, by 69.9% and 561.9%, respectively. This could be attributed to ball milling increasing biochar surface area by 2.05-fold, pore volume by 2.39-fold, and decreasing biochar pH by 0.83-fold. The positive adsorption effects induced by ball milling varied widely, with the most effective being ball milling for 12 to 24 h at 300 to 400 rpm with a biochar:ball mass ratio of 1:100 on biochars produced at 400-550 °C from wood residues. Based on this meta-analysis, we conclude that ball milling could effectively enhance biochar's ability to remove organic and inorganic contaminants from aquatic systems.

RESUMEN

This paper studied denitrifying phosphorus removal of a novel two-line biological nutrient removal process treating low strength domestic wastewater under different sludge recycling ratios. Mass balance of intracellular compounds including polyhydroxyvalerate, polyhydroxybutyrate and glycogen was investigated together with total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Results showed that sludge recycling ratios had a significant influence on the use of organics along bioreactors and 73.6% of the average removal efficiency was obtained when the influent chemical oxygen demand (COD) ranged from 175.9 mgL-1 to 189.9 mgL-1. The process performed better under a sludge recycling ratio of 100% compared to 25% and 50% in terms of ammonia and COD removal rates. Overall, TN removal efficiency for 50% and 100% sludge recycling ratios were 56.4% and 61.9%, respectively, unlike the big gap for carbon utilization and the TP removal rates, indicating that the effect of sludge recycling ratio on the anaerobic compartments had been counteracted by change in the efficiency of other compartments. The higher ratio of sludge recycling was conducive to the removal of TN, not in favor of TP, and less influence on COD. Thus, 25% was considered to be the optimal sludge recycling ratio.

RESUMEN

The Taihu (Tai lake) region is one of the most economically prospering areas of China. Due to its location within this district of high anthropogenic activities, Taihu represents a drastic example of water pollution with nutrients (nitrogen, phosphate), organic contaminants and heavy metals. High nutrient levels combined with very shallow water create large eutrophication problems, threatening the drinking water supply of the surrounding cities. Within the international research project SIGN (SinoGerman Water Supply Network, www.water-sign.de), funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), a powerful consortium of fifteen German partners is working on the overall aim of assuring good water quality from the source to the tap by taking the whole water cycle into account: The diverse research topics range from future proof strategies for urban catchment, innovative monitoring and early warning approaches for lake and drinking water, control and use of biological degradation processes, efficient water treatment technologies, adapted water distribution up to promoting sector policy by good governance. The implementation in China is warranted, since the leading Chinese research institutes as well as the most important local stakeholders, e.g. water suppliers, are involved.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we studied the electrochemical oxidation mechanisms of three typical fluoroquinolone antibiotics (FQs), and investigated residual antibacterial activity and toxicity changes after oxidation processes. Electrochemistry coupled to mass spectrometry (EC-MS) was used to study the oxidation processes of ciprofloxacin (CIP), norfloxacin (NOR) and ofloxacin (OFL). Eight oxidation products for each parent compound were identified and their chemical structures were elucidated. The transformation trend of each product, with the continuous increase of voltage from 0 to 3000 mV, was recorded by online EC-MS. The oxidation pathways were proposed based on the structural information and transformation trends of oxidation products. We found the oxidation mechanisms of FQs consisted of the hydroxylation and cleavage of piperazinyl ring via reactions with hydroxyl radicals, while the fluoroquinolone core remained intact. The antibacterial activity of the parent compounds and their oxidation mixtures was estimated using zone inhibition tests for gram-negative bacteria Salmonella typhimurium. It was found that the oxidation mixtures of CIP and NOR retained the antibacterial properties with lower activity compared to their parent compounds, while the antibacterial activity of OFL was almost eliminated after oxidation. Furthermore, the toxicity of the three FQs and their oxidation mixtures were evaluated using algal growth inhibition test (Desmodesmus subspicatus). The median effective concentration (EC50) values for the algal inhibition tests were calculated for the end point of growth rate. The toxicity of CIP and NOR to green algae after electrochemical oxidation, remained unchanged, while that of OFL significantly increased. The results presented in this paper contribute to an understanding of the electrochemical oxidation mechanisms of FQs, and highlight the potential environmental risks of FQs after electrochemical oxidation processes.
