RESUMEN

This article presents a case study of the adoption, use, and outcomes of an admission interview process for selection into a large public baccalaureate nursing program between 2007 and 2011. This article reports the effects of implementation, including how interviews affected the grade point average of incoming students as well as student diversity, retention, and National Council Licensure Examination scores, over nine consecutive admission cycles. During the initial implementation cycles, reported satisfaction with the process was high; however, as implementation progressed, it became clear that the anticipated gains from the interview process related to ethnic and gender diversity were not being realized. Furthermore, implementation of the interview strategy created unforeseen difficulties. These two factors led to a decision to stop using this strategy for admission into the baccalaureate program. Lessons learned in the implementation of interviews as an admission criterion are included in the discussion.

RESUMEN

This article describes the most recent efforts by the Quad Council of Public Health Nursing organizations to review and revise the competencies for PHN practice, and highlights the implications of these competencies for practice, education, and research. The Quad Council is a coalition of four nursing organizations with a focus on public health nursing and includes the Association of Community Health Nursing Educators; the Association of Public Health Nursing (known prior to July 1, 2012 as the Association of State and Territorial Directors of Nursing); the Public Health Nursing section of the American Public Health Association; and the Council on Economics and Practice of the American Nurses' Association. The Quad Council competencies are based on the Council on Linkages competencies for public health professionals and were designed to ensure that public health nursing fits in the domain of public health science and practice.

RESUMEN

This descriptive study evaluated the implementation of a revised admission policy for the Indiana University School of Nursing baccalaureate program. On the basis of our decision that grade point average (GPA) alone should not determine admission, new admission criteria were developed and implemented in spring 2007. In addition to a weighted GPA, criteria were added to include an interview, a writing sample, and a service requirement. Following the completion of all interviews and prior to notification of applicants of their admission status, students and interviewers who participated in the first admission cycle were mailed a survey asking their anonymous perceptions regarding the new process for application to the program. Responses indicate that both interviewers (n = 45) and students (n = 165) thought that the new policy and the interview were extremely positive. Results suggest that this comprehensive and varied approach to student admission was successful in its initial implementation. Further longitudinal studies are needed to determine how the new criteria affect student diversity; examination and course grades; progression, retention, and graduation; Assessment Technologies Institute tests; National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN) scores; admission to graduate school; and satisfaction of faculty with students and future employers with graduates.

RESUMEN

Motivation for this study arose from the authors' commitment to community service and the perceived dissonance related to service in the tripartite faculty role. The purpose of this study was to understand perceptions related to the decision-making process of tenured nursing faculty in response to requests for community service. Qualitative methodology using in-depth interviews that were transcribed verbatim and analyzed for themes was used. Five major themes were identified: primacy of matching expertise with skills; search for impact; due diligence; institutional ambivalence regarding community service; and the variety of preparation. Participants reported a dissonance between stated institutional commitment to service and the actual weight it carried in tenure and promotion decisions. Junior faculty should be mentored to carefully determine service commitments, and outcome indicators to evaluate the quality of service activities need to be developed.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To study perceptions of the effectiveness of two nurse-managed clinics (NMCs), one in the United States and the other in New Zealand. DESIGN: Cross-cultural evaluation study utilizing qualitative methodology; two rounds of in-depth interviews were tape recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed for themes. SAMPLE: Data were initially collected from 21 participants. Sixteen of the original participants participated in a second interview. INTERVENTION: The first round of interviews and provisional data analysis were conducted in the respective NMCs; joint data analysis to identify themes and develop a preliminary joint report of findings followed. Sixteen participants responded to the provisional report; additional data analysis resulted in the final report of findings. RESULTS: Analysis of the data yielded three categories: the NMC milieu affects perceived effectiveness; perceptions are shaped by contrasting with past experiences; and the level of care affects personal health care decisions. CONCLUSIONS: The milieu created in the NMC enhances perceptions of effectiveness and responsibility for personal health care. Further research related to effectiveness of NMC models of care and client outcomes is needed. Qualitative methodology is recommended for cross-cultural research.
