RESUMEN
The state of Paraná is home to three out of the five medically significant snake genera in Brazil and lacks of snakebite epidemiology studies. This study aimed to ascertain the spatial, environmental, and socioeconomic factors associated with snakebite risk by analyzing notification data of cases in the state of Paraná. Notification and socioeconomic data were gathered from the online platforms of the National System of Notifiable Diseases (SINAN) and the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). Land cover and land use maps were obtained from the Mapbiomas platform in raster format and subsequently converted into vectors using QGis software. The proportions of land use and land cover in square kilometers (km2) were then calculated. All acquired data were tabulated using Microsoft Excel 365 software. For spatial analysis, GeoDa software version 1.20 was utilized to calculate the Global and Local Moran indices, assessing spatial correlations. Between 2007 and 2021, 12,877 notifications were recorded, with an average incidence of 8.22/100,000 inhabitants in the state, 8166 (63.41%) caused by Bothrops, 1534 (11.91%) caused by Crotalus, 56 (0.43%) caused by Micrurus. 1703 (13.22%) caused by non-venomous snake species, and the remaining cases did not have the identified causative species. The incidents caused by Bothrops and Crotalus showed different distribution patterns. Spatial analysis revealed that key factors contributing to snakebite risk included the presence of native forests, mangroves, apicuns, and monospecific planted forests. The population group at the highest risk comprised rural residents and workers. Furthermore, the absence of basic sanitation and proper garbage collection and disposal exhibited positive correlations with snakebites. Conversely, intensive farming practices with substantial mechanization and pastures demonstrated negative spatial correlations. This study has enabled the identification of the primary factors associated with snakebite risk, facilitating more targeted efforts to prevent snakebite accidents among vulnerable populations.

This systematic review gathered information on the spatial distribution in southern Brazil of the sandfly Migonemyia migonei, a possible vector of Leishmania species that cause visceral leishmaniasis (VL). Articles were searched from the PubMed, Scielo, Web of Science, and Scopus databases using the keywords: "Migonemyia migonei AND Paraná", "Migonemyia migonei AND Santa Catarina", "Migonemyia migonei AND Rio Grande do Sul", "phlebotomine AND Parana", " flebotomíneo AND Paraná" and "sandfly AND Paraná", "phlebotomine AND Santa Catarina;", " flebotomíneo AND Santa Catarina" and "sandfly AND Santa Catarina", "phlebotomine AND Rio Grande do Sul;", " flebotomíneo AND Rio Grande do Sul", and "sandfly AND Rio Grande do Sul". The initial search identified 322 articles that met the selection criteria. Empty files or duplicated were then excluded. The titles were screened, and the full texts were obtained. This review included 36 articles, covering 72 of the 399 (18.04%) municipalities in Paraná state, one of the 295 (0.33%) in Santa Catarina, and two of the 497 (0.40%) in Rio Grande do Sul. Mg. migonei was found in 54 municipalities of Paraná state, in one municipality of Santa Catarina, and in one of Rio Grande do Sul. Based on the wide distribution of Mg. migonei in the municipalities of Paraná, greater monitoring is required regarding cases of VL in humans and animals in this region, in addition to epidemiological investigations of these cases of suspected autochthony, as well as increased prevention and control efforts. More studies on VL are required in Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul.

Brachiaria species are some of the most used forage species for raising Brazilian cattle because of their great nutritional value and adaptability to the tropical climate. However, cases of animal intoxication have been described. Animal species, age, genetic resistance, and previous adaptation to the forage can influence the susceptibility to intoxication. Cattle (young or adults), other adult ruminants and animals adapted to consumption (experienced flocks) are considered more resistant. The main clinical presentation is that of hepatogenous photosensitization. Brachiaria brizantha and Brachiaria ruziziensis are considered less toxic. The aim of this study is to describe three outbreaks of intoxication by B. brizantha and B. ruziziensis in experienced cattle, as well as to compare the concentrations of protodioscin in paddocks with and without clinical cases. It was observed that the two forage species are toxic to all age groups of cattle adapted to their consumption, and the concentrations of protodioscin present in the plant cannot be used as the only criterion for determining the occurrence of intoxication.

The aim of this work was to determine the seroprevalence of Neospora caninum in buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) from Maranhão State, Brazil, and identify risk factors associated with infection. In total, 338 buffaloes of different ages and both sexes from four farms were randomly selected. Information about the study region, animals and management was collected using an epidemiological questionnaire. Sera were subjected to an indirect fluorescent antibody test (IFAT) to detect anti-N caninum antibodies, while N. caninum DNA was detected using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The overall seroprevalence of N. caninum in buffaloes was 27.5% (93/338), while DNA was detected in 3.0% (3/101) samples. The proportion of positive animals detected by IFAT and PCR simultaneously was 2.6% (2/77). The risk factors for N. caninum infection were contact with fomites (p = 0.022), management conditions (p = 0.005), calving interval of 20 months (p = 0.010) and deworming management (application 3 times a year in adults and calves, p = 0.020; change of anthelmintic group, p = 0.040). By multivariate analysis, management conditions was a risk factor for N. caninum infection with odds ratio of 2.2 (95% CI 1.0-4.6). This is the first report of the prevalence and risk factors for neosporosis in B. bubalis of Maranhão State, Brazil. Thus, N. caninum is widely distributed in buffalo herds in Maranhão, with management conditions being a risk factor for infection. Further studies should be conducted to elucidate the importance of buffaloes in the epidemiology of neosporosis in Maranhão State.

Bees are insects of the order Hymenoptera and are involved in human accidents. In Brazil, bees that cause accidents are crosses derived from Europeans with African bees and are known for their aggressive behavior. Despite being considered an important public health concern, epidemiological studies at the national level are scarce. The objective of this study was to verify the epidemiological profile of bee accidents in humans in Brazil, using data from 2009 to 2019 of the Brazilian Ministry of Health. It was found that bee accidents increased by 207.61% from the first to the last year of the present study. The incidence varied according to the geographical region; the southern region had more bee accidents, but the Northern region had more deaths caused by bee accidents. Besides, climatic conditions were associated with susceptibility to bee stings; the incidence was higher during spring and summer. Age was also associated with fatality rate, with the elderly being the group with the highest fatality rate. Our results demonstrate that accidents caused by bees involve factors related to patients, the environment, and the behavior of bees. It is important to know the epidemiological aspects to help prevent apidic accidents.

Neosporosis is one of the principal causes of reproductive problems in cattle worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence of anti-Neospora caninum antibodies in cattle and dogs from dairy farms from the central northern region of Paraná state. Blood samples with and without EDTA were collected from 400 cattle and 46 dogs from 20 properties. Nested polymerase chain reaction (n-PCR) was performed on whole blood samples and indirect immunofluorescence reaction (IFR) on the serum samples (after clot retraction). Cattle and dogs with titers ? 100 and ? 50, respectively, were considered positive. Anti-N. caninum was detected in 20,1% (80/400) of cattle, with titers ranging from 100 to 1600. The n-PCR presented only two cattle positives (0.5%). Anti-N. caninum was detected in 19,6% (9/46) of the dogs, with titers ranging from 50 to 6400. The occurrence of antibodies against N. caninum obtained in the present study was similar to those in studies performed in other regions of Paraná and Brazil. The probability of detecting parasitemia in epidemiological studies is a rare event.(AU)

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the seroprevalence of antibodies against Neospora caninum, obtained two years apart, among dairy cattle in a rural settlement in southern Brazil. Blood samples from 734 dairy cattle on 41 farms were collected at two different times: in 2012, 406 animals on 30 farms were used; and in 2014, 329 animals on 31 farms. Serum samples were obtained and were used to detect antibodies against N. caninum, by means of the indirect fluorescence assay (IFA). Animals with titers ≥ 100 were considered positive. The total serum prevalence of anti-N. caninum antibodies was 19.7% (145/736) among all the dairy cattle, comprising 23.1% (94/406) in 2012 and 15.5% (51/329) in 2014. Serum from 91 animals was tested in both trials: 11(12.1%) showed positivity in 2012 and 10 (11%) in 2014. The variables of age, sex and breed did not show any associations with seropositivity. Thus, we showed that the cattle in this settlement presented high levels of antibodies against N. caninum, and that IFA showed good efficacy for epidemiological studies.(AU)
