RESUMEN

Metatropic dysplasia is a rare skeletal dysplasia caused by a mutation in the VDRL4 gene. Characteristic abnormalities include tubular bones with short diaphyses and wide metaphyses, delayed ossification of the ischio/pubic bone, and platyspondyly. The main problem is progressive kyphoscoliosis, which significantly limits the patient's motor development. Another complication is compression of the cervical spinal cord, which reverses any improvements in the child's motor performance. The paper presents a description of a 4-year-old boy with metatropic dysplasia treated by orthopaedic bracing and spinal cord decompression surgery at the C1-2 level. Particular attention is paid to physiotherapy, which allowed restoration of motor functions to match the needs of daily activity.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Przystanek Woodstock Festival is one of the biggest polish music festivals, which gathers nearly half million participants each year. The aim of the article was presentation of number and type of the medical cases and the medical interventions in the main field hospital - OAZA. The second aim was assessment of medical cover of XV and XVI Przystanek Woodstock Festival. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The book with description of medical interventions and plan of medical cover prepared for the festival were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: The medical staff has given medical aid to 1433 patients in 2009 and to 1414 in the next year. The main reason of medical interventions were: injuries, allergic reactions after insect bite, foreign bodies in the saccus conjunctivalis, gastro-intestinal disorders, pain ailments (among other things: headache, back pain). CONCLUSIONS: The organization of the Przystanek Woodstock Festival is tied with appearing of peculiar health threats and the early diagnosis of them is essential for correct protecting this mass events. Medical security turned out to be sufficient in relation to predicted threats.

RESUMEN

AIMS: This study investigated whether fluid removal during a hemodialysis (HD) session affects the results of non-invasive pulse volume recording (PVR) on the lower extremities. METHODS: The results of PVR by air plethysmography (Portable Vascular Laboratory; BioMedix, USA) were compared with bioelectrical impedance analysis (Nutriguard-M device; Data Input, Germany) of the human body before and after a single HD in 28 anuric patients (10 women; 18 men) aged 33-76 years. RESULTS: Changes in the wave amplitude of the PVR correlated with the changes in the patient's weight during HD. Lower stroke volume at the end of HD due to blood volume withdrawal resulted in PVR reduction at the ankle level. Significant Spearman coefficients were found between extracellular water and PVR amplitude changes (r = 0.7, p < 0.01) as well as between intracellular water and PVR (r = 0.6, p < 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: To avoid falsification connected with hypervolemia and stroke volume change, the most appropriate time for PVR in vascular diagnosing seems to be the period of a few hours after dialysis session.

RESUMEN

Megacalycosis is an uncommon, congenital renal abnormality, characterized by nonobstructive dilatation of the renal calyces with normal renal pelvis, ureter and bladder. This condition is due to underdevelopement or hypoplasia of Malpighie's pyramids. It usually occurs unilateraly as the isolated anomaly with strong male predominance. Megacalycosis itself does not impair the renal function but it can be the cause of urinary tract infections and calculus formation. This congenital defect is incidentally found by urography during the examination for urolithiasis or urinary tract infections or calculus formation. The images on radograms can be confused with obstructive or refluxing hydronephrosis or postinflamtory changes typical for pyelonephritis chronica. In case of megacalycosis surgical treatment is unnecessary. Patients with this condition should be followed-up with ultrasound and prevention of urinary tract infections or urolithiasis. Here we would like to report on the case of megacalycosis in a ten-year-old girl reffered to our deprtament due to UTI. Diagnosis of megacalycosis was established by typical urography findings: dilatation of renal calyces, no distention or obstruction of renal pelvic and ureter. The renal function was normal. No evidence of abnormality in cystoureterogram and uroflowmetry test was detected.

RESUMEN

AIM: The analysis of the data from the psychiatric hospitals in Lubliniec (1894-1932, 1934-1936, 1970-1999) and Boleslawiec (1958-1999) proved a decrease in frequency of diagnosis of catatonic schizophrenia, what could testify to a decrease in morbidity with this form of schizophrenia. METHOD AND RESULTS: Basing on the facts from scientific literature there was ascertained that the decrease in frequency of diagnosis of catatonic schizophrenia is connected with following causes: firstly, with the changes in nozology, secondly, with the introduction of a new form of therapy and finally, with the fact that here psychological and sociological factors exist which eliminate catatonia as the most expressive form of schizophrenia.
