RESUMEN

In Y. enterocolitica strain, serovar 0:10, the capacity for the formation of pili inducing the mannose-resistant hemagglutination (MRHA) of formolated sheep red blood cells was due to the presence of plasmid pYE10. MRHA-inducing pili differed serologically from Y. pestis and Y. tuberculosis adhesion pili. Plasmid pYE10 was immobilized for transfer to cells of Escherichia coli strain HB101 (rec A) by means of pRP 4. The expression of MRHA-inducing pili in the new host the rec A-independent character of the synthesis. Y. enterocolitica cells containing pYE10 agglutinated in tissue-culture media with 10% of serum added at 37 degrees C.

RESUMEN

To establish the presence of phages specific for V. cholerae NAG, 673 strains, 166 water samples from ponds and sewage and 674 fecal samples from patients with acute intestinal diseases have been studied; as a result, 54 phage races have been isolated. The occurrence of true lysogeny in V. cholerae NAG has been found to be infrequent (0.9-10% among newly isolated strains). Pseudolysogeny has been detected in 0.75% of the strains under study. Of the total number of truly lysogenic strains of V. cholerae NAG, 10% have been found to carry V. cholerae phages of types I, III, V, VII, IX. The possibility of the simultaneous existence of V. cholerae phages and V. cholerae NAG phages in the environment has been shown. Of the isolated phages, 45 races have no serological relationship with V. cholerae phages, while possessing specific lytic activity with respect to V. cholerae NAG.

RESUMEN

The use of the erythrocyte agglutination test for characterizing the properties of Y. pseudotuberculosis led to the detection of a highly adhesive strain belonging to serotype III and capable of forming pili at 37 degrees C. The adhesion of the cells provided with pili was completely inhibited by the mixture of gangliosides, specific antibodies, and the preliminary treatment of erythrocytes with neuraminidases sharply enhanced the effectiveness of adhesion. The adhesion pili consisted of protein subunits with a molecular weight of 16 800 daltons and had the isoionic point at pH 4.1.

RESUMEN

The study of hemolysin activity, hemolysin-destructive factor (HDF) activity and cholerogenicity in 143 Vibrio eltor strains has revealed the existance of close relationship between cholerogenicity and hemolysin production, as well as between cholerogenicity and HDF activity. The negative character of conjugation between the HDF activity and the hemolytic activity of the strains under study has been established, which allows one to suggest the possibility of the regulating action of hemolysin on the synthesis of HDF (enterotoxin).

RESUMEN

A study was made of the morphology of plague moderate bacteriophages 1701, 1710 and their mutants 1701-1 and 1710-1. The phages proved to be morphologically identical, were referred to group 5, and were identical to the moderate plague H-phages; when confronted to the commonness of the serological properties and a number of other signs this indicated their affinity.

RESUMEN

The authors present the results of a comparative study of the protein spectra of 80 strains of various vibrios. Proteinograms were elaborated by the method of disc-electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gel for each strain and species. There were revealed 25 protein peaks with definite mobility coefficients. The number of peaks and their areas varied in different species. The qualitative and the quantitative differences between the vibrio species were established. Results of investigations demonstrated a possibliity of using the protein spectra for the differentiation of microorganisms.
