RESUMEN

Background Presently, modern regenerative and surgical techniques for immediate implant placement in prepared sockets with soft tissue grafts and bone substitutes have helped eliminate concerns about bone deficiency. This also allowed the placement of dental implants based on prosthodontic needs. Aim  The present study aimed to comparatively assess dental implant healing following immediate implant placement with or without bone graft and dental implant healing after delayed implant placement with or without bone graft. Methods The study included 120 study subjects that were divided into two groups. Group I for immediate implant placement with or without bone graft (n=60) and Group II for delayed implant placement with or without bone graft (n=60). These two groups were further divided into subgroups. Group I subjects were further divided into two subgroups, where Group A (n=30) subjects underwent immediate implant placement with bone graft and Group B (n=30) subjects were given immediate implant placement without bone graft. Group II participants were further divided into two subgroups, where Group C (n=30) subjects underwent delayed implant placement with bone graft and Group D (n=30) subjects underwent delayed implant placement without bone graft. In the two groups, crestal bone levels were compared radiographically preoperatively and postoperatively at the immediate postoperative time, three months, and six months. Results More reduction in the crestal bone level was seen in the immediate implant placement group at three and six months postoperatively compared to the delayed implant placement group. A non-significant reduction in crestal bone levels was seen in the immediate implant placement with bone graft group with p>0.05 at three and six months compared to immediate implant placement without bone graft. Similar, non-significant crestal bone loss was seen in the delayed implant placement with bone graft group at three and six months compared to delayed implant placement with bone graft. Conclusions  This study concluded that healing of crestal bone in the delayed implant placement group with or without bone graft is better in comparison to the immediate implant placement group with or without bone graft.

Background: This study examines the surface changes of stainless steel miniplates and screws after their retrieval from patients who underwent maxillofacial trauma and orthognathic surgery. The assessment focuses on comparing the alterations in these materials, aiming to contribute to our understanding of their durability and performance in clinical settings. Materials and Methods: A total of 60 stainless steel miniplates and screws were collected from 30 patients who had previously undergone either maxillofacial trauma or orthognathic surgery. The retrieved miniplates and screws were carefully removed from the patients and cleaned to remove any organic debris. Each specimen was then examined for surface changes. Surface changes were evaluated using visual inspection, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and roughness measurements. Visual inspection provided a qualitative assessment, while SEM allowed for a more detailed examination of the surfaces. Roughness measurements were conducted using a profilometer. Results: Visual inspection revealed varying degrees of surface changes in the retrieved miniplates and screws. These changes included scratches, corrosion, and discoloration. SEM analysis confirmed the presence of surface alterations, with some specimens showing more significant damage, such as pitting and cracks. Roughness measurements indicated an increase in surface roughness for both miniplates and screws, suggesting that the surfaces had become less smooth. Conclusion: This comparative study of stainless steel miniplates and screws retrieved from maxillofacial trauma and orthognathic surgery patients demonstrated that these materials undergo surface changes over time.

RESUMEN

Modern advances in all phases of dentistry have provided the opportunity for patients to maintain a functional dentition for lifetime. Therapeutic measures performed to ensure retention of teeth vary in complexity. The treatment may involve combining restorative dentistry, endodontics, and periodontics so that the teeth are retained in whole or in part. Thus, tooth resection procedures are used to preserve as much tooth structure as possible rather than sacrificing the whole tooth. This treatment can produce predictable results as long as proper diagnostic, endodontic, surgical, prosthetic, and maintenance procedures are performed. The keys to long-term success appear to be thorough diagnosis, selection of patients with good oral hygiene and careful surgical and restorative management.

RESUMEN

Gingival enlargement, the currently accepted terminology for an increase in the size of the gingiva, is a common feature of gingival disease. Local and systemic factors influence the gingival conditions of the patient. These factors results in a spectrum of diseases that can be developmental, reactive and inflammatory to neoplastic. In this article, the history, etiology, clinical and histopathological features, treatment strategies and preventive protocol of inflammatory hyperplasia are discussed.
