RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the present study was to compare the success and complication rates of pediatric renal biopsy procedures between the angled tangential approach and the traditional approach. METHODS: From 2004 to 2009 we prospectively enrolled pediatric patients who had undergone real time ultrasound guided renal biopsy with angled tangential approach. For comparison, we retrospectively reviewed pediatric patients who had undergone traditional renal biopsy between 2002 and 2004. Adequacy of renal tissue histopathological samples and the complication rates were compared between groups. RESULTS: One hundred twenty-eight patients underwent traditional renal biopsy (Group A) while 166 patients underwent biopsy performed with angled tangential approach (Group B).The rate of inadequate material was higher in Group A compared to Group B (6.3% vs. 0.6%, p = 0.006). In four cases (three in Group A and one in Group B) renal biopsies revealed normal renal tissue. While a major complication (hemoperitoneum requiring transfusion) occurred in one case in Group A, no major complications were seen in Group B. CONCLUSION: Compared with the traditional technique, the angled tangential approach resulted in a higher adequate material rate and lower complication rate. These findings indicate that angled tangential approach could be considered for pediatric percutaneous renal biopsies.

RESUMEN

Hydatid disease (HD) is a unique parasitic infection that is endemic in many parts of the world. Although the disease primarly affects the liver, HD can be encountered almost anywhere in the body depending on its hematogenous dissemination. In this case report, we describe a 61-year-old man who presented with abdominal pain and urinary complaints. Imaging studies revealed a huge liver and pelvic region lesions that exhibited characteristic imaging findings for type 3 HD.The second lesion was interpreted as occurring due to dissemination from the liver HD. Due to the extensiveness of the disease, both surgery and percutaneous drainage of the lesions were excluded and the patient was put on albendazole treatment.

RESUMEN

We report a case of alveolar echinococcosis involving the liver in a 61-year-old male. Alveolar echinococcosis is a rare chronic and progressive disease, which can involve mostly liver and in rare cases lung and brain. It is caused by Echinococcus multilocularis. In this report we describe the imaging findings of hepatic involvement of alveolar echinococcosis by ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging.

RESUMEN

Cyst of the canal of Nuck is a rare cause of inguinal swelling in woman. We report a case of a cyst of the canal of Nuck in which sonography showed a tubular cystic structure with internal septae localized within the inguinal canal. Magnetic resonance examination demonstrated that the mass was hypointense on T1-weighted and hyperintense on T2-weighted series and that there were fine hypointense septae inside the mass on the T2-weighted sequence. Diagnosis of cyst of the canal of Nuck was confirmed by surgery and subsequent histopathologic evaluation.
