RESUMEN

Cannabis sativa L. has been widely used by humans for centuries for various purposes, such as industrial, ceremonial, medicinal, and food. The bioactive components of Cannabis sativa L. can be classified into two main groups: cannabinoids and terpenes. These bioactive components of Cannabis sativa L. leaf and inflorescence extracts were analyzed. Mice were systemically administered 30 mg/kg of Cannabis sativa L. leaf extract 1 h before lipopolysaccharide (LPS) administration, and behavioral tests were performed. We conducted an investigation into the oxygen saturation, oxygen tension, and degranulation of mast cells (MCs) in the deep cervical lymph nodes (DCLNs). To evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of Cannabis sativa L. extracts in BV2 microglial cells, we assessed nitrite production and the expression levels of inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, interleukin (IL)-1ß, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α. The main bioactive components of the Cannabis sativa L. extracts were THCA (a cannabinoid) and ß-caryophyllene (a terpene). Cannabis sativa L. leaf extract reduced the immobility time in the forced swimming test and increased sucrose preference in the LPS model, without affecting the total distance and time in the center in the open field test. Additionally, Cannabis sativa L. leaf extract improved oxygen levels and inhibited the degranulation of MCs in DCLNs. The Cannabis sativa L. extracts inhibited IL-1ß, IL-6, TNF-α, nitrite, iNOS, and COX-2 expression in BV2 microglia cells. The efficacy of Cannabis sativa L. extracts was suggested to be due to the entourage effect of various bioactive phytochemicals. Our findings indicate that these extracts have the potential to be used as effective treatments for a variety of diseases associated with acute inflammatory responses.

BACKGROUND: Asthma is a heterogeneous disease with different outcomes. For children with asthma at the age of 7 years, 67-75% are symptom-free as adults. Data on the important link between childhood and adult asthma are sparse. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate factors associated with persistence of childhood asthma over three years of follow-up by linking data between Korea childhood Asthma Study (KAS) and their matched claims data from Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service (HIRA). METHODS: We analyzed data from 450 preadolescent children aged 7 to 10 years and classified them into remission or persistence groups. Baseline clinical characteristics and exposure to air pollution materials including PM2.5 and PM10 during three years of follow-up were compared. The main outcome was asthma persistence which was defined as the presence of asthma episodes with healthcare utilization and prescription of asthma medications within three years after KAS enrollment. RESULTS: At the third year of follow-up, after stepwise regression analysis, lower age at enrollment (adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 0.79; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.64-0.96), male sex (aOR: 1.66; 95%CI: 1.05-2.63), proximity from an air-polluting facility (aOR: 2.4; 95%CI: 1.34-4.29), higher level outdoor PM2.5 (aOR: 1.1; 95%CI: 1.02-1.20), and higher rate of doctor-diagnosed food allergy (FA) (aOR: 2.33; 95%CI: 1.06-5.12) were significantly associated with persistence. CONCLUSION: We discovered various independent risk factors for the persistence of childhood asthma. By linking HIRA claims data, we could clarify risk factors for persistence in a well-defined study population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Preterm birth or fetal growth has been associated with reduced lung function and asthma during childhood in the general population. We aimed to elucidate whether prematurity or fetal growth has a significant influence on lung function or symptoms in children with stable asthma. METHODS: We included children with stable asthma who participated in the Korean childhood Asthma Study cohort. Asthma symptoms were determined by asthma control test (ACT). Percent predicted values of pre- and post-bronchodilator (BD) lung function including forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1 ), forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory flow at 25%-75% of FVC (FEF25%-75% ) were measured. Lung function and symptoms were compared according to the history of preterm birth and birth weight (BW) for gestational age (GA). RESULTS: The study population consisted of 566 children (age range: 5-18 years). There were no significant differences in lung function and ACT between preterm and term subjects. We observed no significant difference in ACT but significant differences were observed in pre- and post-BD FEV1 , pre- and post-BD FVC, and post-BD FEF25%-75% according to BW for GA in total subjects. Two-way ANOVA revealed that BW for GA rather than prematurity was a significant determining factor for pre- and post-BD lung function. After regression analysis, BW for GA was still a significant determining factor of pre- and post-BD FEV1 and pre- and post-BD FEF25%-75% . CONCLUSION: Fetal growth rather than prematurity appears to have a significant effect on lung function in children with stable asthma.

BACKGROUND: To the best of our knowledge, there have been no investigations of longitudinal asthma trajectories based on asthma exacerbation frequency and medications required for asthma control in children. OBJECTIVE: To investigate longitudinal asthma trajectories based on the exacerbation frequency throughout childhood and asthma medication ranks. METHODS: A total of 531 children aged 7 to 10 years were enrolled from the Korean childhood Asthma Study. Required asthma medications for control of asthma from 6 to 12 years of age and asthma exacerbation frequency from birth to 12 years of age were obtained from the Korean National Health Insurance System database. Longitudinal asthma trajectories were identified on the basis of asthma exacerbation frequency and asthma medication ranks. RESULTS: Four asthma clusters were identified: lesser exacerbation with low-step treatment (8.1%), lesser exacerbations with middle-step treatment (30.7%), highly frequent exacerbations in early childhood with small-airway dysfunction (5.7%), and frequent exacerbations with high-step treatment (55.6%). The frequent exacerbations with high-step treatment cluster were characterized by a high prevalence of male sex, increased blood eosinophil (counts) with fractional exhaled nitric oxide, and high prevalence of comorbidities. The highly frequent exacerbation in early childhood with small-airway dysfunction cluster was characterized by recurrent wheeze in preschool age, with high prevalence of acute bronchiolitis in infancy and a greater number of family members with small-airway dysfunction at school age. CONCLUSION: The present study identified 4 longitudinal asthma trajectories on the basis of the frequency of asthma exacerbation and asthma medication ranks. These results would help clarify the heterogeneities and pathophysiologies of childhood asthma.

RESUMEN

We report a rare and unique presentation of a patient with early and levodopa-responsive Parkinson’s disease (PD) who exhibited clinical features similar to posterior cortical atrophy (PCA). The imaging evidence suggested the coexistence of PD and PCA, without the presence of amyloid pathology. Although the present case lacks pathologic evidence, this case represents a distinct manifestation of PD characterized by a combination of parkinsonism and early prominent posterior cognitive deficits, reminiscent of the visual variant of Alzheimer’s disease.

BACKGROUND: Asthma exacerbation (AE) leads to social and economic costs and long-term adverse outcomes. We aimed to predict exacerbation-prone asthma (EPA) in children. METHODS: The Korean childhood Asthma Study (KAS) is a prospective nationwide pediatric asthma cohort of children aged 5-15 years followed every 6 months. Patients with AE during the 6 months prior to all three visits, with AE prior to one or two visits, and without AE prior to any visit were defined as having EPA, exacerbation-intermittent asthma (EIA), and exacerbation-resistant asthma (ERA), respectively. Risk factors and prediction models of EPA were explored. RESULTS: Of the 497 patients who completed three visits, 42%, 18%, and 15% had exacerbations prior to visits 1, 2, and 3 and 5%, 47%, and 48% had EPA, EIA, and ERA, respectively. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression revealed forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) z-score, forced vital capacity (FVC) z-score, white blood cell (WBC) count, and asthma control test (ACT) score as relevant EPA risk factors. The EPA prediction model comprised FVC z-score, WBC count, ACT score, sex, and parental education level (area under the receiver operating characteristic curve [AUROC] 0.841 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.728-0.954]). CONCLUSION: With appropriate management, AE decreases over time, but persistent AEs may occur. Apart from asthma control level, baseline lung function and WBC count predicted EPA.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae is a major causative pathogen of community-acquired pneumonia in children, and the treatment of choice is macrolides. There is an increasing trend in reports of refractory clinical responses despite macrolide treatment due to the emergence of macrolide-resistant M. pneumoniae. Early discrimination of macrolide-refractory M. pneumoniae pneumonia (MrMP) from macrolide-sensitive M. pneumoniae pneumonia (MSMP) is vital; however, testing for macrolide susceptibility at the time of admission is not feasible. This study aimed to identify the characteristics of MrMP in Korean children, in comparison with those of MSMP. In this multicenter study, board-certified pediatric pulmonologists at 22 tertiary hospitals reviewed the medical records from 2010 to 2015 of 5294 children who were hospitalized with M. pneumoniae pneumonia and administered macrolides as the initial treatment. One-way analysis of variance and the Kruskal-Wallis test were used to compare differences between groups. Of 5294 patients (mean age, 5.6 years) included in this analysis, 240 (4.5%), 925 (17.5%), and 4129 (78.0%) had MrMP, macrolide-less effective M. pneumoniae pneumonia, and MSMP, respectively. Compared with the MSMP group, the MrMP group had a longer fever duration, overall (13.0 days) and after macrolide use (8.0 days). A higher proportion of MrMP patients had respiratory distress, pleural effusion, and lobar pneumonia. The mean aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and C-reactive protein levels were the highest in the MrMP group, along with higher incidences of extrapulmonary manifestations and atelectasis (during and post infection). Pre-existing conditions were present in 17.4% (n = 725/4159) of patients, with asthma being the most common (n = 334/4811, 6.9%). This study verified that MrMP patients show more severe initial radiographic findings and clinical courses than MSMP patients. MrMP should be promptly managed by agents other than macrolides.

BACKGROUND: The growing prevalence of overweight and/or obese children is an important public health problem in both developed and developing countries. Although the association of obesity between parents and their children is well known, its underlying mechanisms are not well established. PURPOSE: This meta-analysis examined parent-child (PC) relationships in obesity and identified factors such as world region and country income level that may influence this relationship. METHODS: We identified all related studies published between January 1, 2015 and May 31, 2020 by conducting a literature search using the MeSH terms "obesity," "overweight," "body mass index," "parent," "child," "associate," and "relate" in the PubMed database in English. RESULTS: The meta-analysis of 23 studies that reported an odds ratio (OR) for parent and child obesity associations found a significant association between parents and children who were overweight or obese (pooled OR, 1.97; 95% confidence interval, 1.85-2.10). A meta-regression analysis was used to examine the sources of interstudy heterogeneity. The association between parent and child obesity was higher in Asia than in Europe and the Middle East and higher in high-income countries than in middle-or low-income countries. In addition, a higher association between parent and child obesity was found when both parents were obese than when only the father or mother was obese. This study from multiple countries indicates a significant PC relationship in weight status that varies according to PC pair type, parent and child weight statuses, world region, and country income level. CONCLUSION: These results demonstrate that the risk of childhood obesity is greatly influenced by parental weight status and indicate that parents could play an important role in preventing child obesity.

BACKGROUND: Predicting food allergy resolution is essential to minimize the number of restricted foods in children. However, there have been no studies on the natural history of peanut allergy (PA) in Korea. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the natural course and prognostic factors of immediate-type PA in children till the age of 10 years. METHODS: We retrospectively collected data of 122 children who developed PA before 60 months of age from 3 tertiary hospitals in Korea. Diagnosis and resolution of PA was defined as an oral food challenge test or a convincing history of symptoms within 2 h after peanut ingestion. The prognostic factors for resolution of PA were identified using the Cox proportional hazard model. RESULTS: The median (interquartile range) age at diagnosis was 2.0 (1.3-3.0) years. Among the 122 children, PA resolved in 18 (14.8%) children. The level of peanut-specific IgE (sIgE) at diagnosis in the persistence group was significantly higher than that in the resolution group (p = 0.026). The probabilities of resolution of PA were 10.3% and 32.8% at the ages of 6 and 10 years, respectively. A peanut-sIgE level ≥1 kU/L at diagnosis was significantly associated with persistent PA (hazard ratio, 5.99; 95% confidence interval, 1.89-18.87). CONCLUSIONS: Only 10.3% of our patients had a probability of developing spontaneous resolution of PA by 6 years of age. Peanut-sIgE levels ≥1 kU/L at diagnosis were associated with the persistence of PA.

Engineered biomaterials are envisioned to replace, augment, or interact with living tissues for improving the functional deformities associated with end-stage joint pathologies. Unfortunately, wear debris from implant interfaces is the major factor leading to periprosthetic osteolysis. Fibroblast-like synoviocytes (FLSs) populate the intimal lining of the synovium and are in direct contact with wear debris. This study aimed to elucidate the effect of Ti particles as wear debris on human FLSs and the mechanism by which they might participate in the bone remodeling process during periprosthetic osteolysis. FLSs were isolated from synovial tissue from patients, and the condition medium (CM) was collected after treating FLSs with sterilized Ti particles. The effect of CM was analyzed for the induction of osteoclastogenesis or any effect on osteogenesis and signaling pathways. The results demonstrated that Ti particles could induce activation of the NFκB signaling pathway and induction of COX-2 and inflammatory cytokines in FLSs. The amount of Rankl in the conditioned medium collected from Ti particle-stimulated FLSs (Ti CM) showed the ability to stimulate osteoclast formation. The Ti CM also suppressed the osteogenic initial and terminal differentiation markers for osteoprogenitors, such as alkaline phosphate activity, matrix mineralization, collagen synthesis, and expression levels of Osterix, Runx2, collagen 1α, and bone sialoprotein. Inhibition of the WNT and BMP signaling pathways was observed in osteoprogenitors after the treatment with the Ti CM. In the presence of the Ti CM, exogenous stimulation by WNT and BMP signaling pathways failed to stimulate osteogenic activity in osteoprogenitors. Induced expression of sclerostin (SOST: an antagonist of WNT and BMP signaling) in Ti particle-treated FLSs and secretion of SOST in the Ti CM were detected. Neutralization of SOST in the Ti CM partially restored the suppressed WNT and BMP signaling activity as well as the osteogenic activity in osteoprogenitors. Our results reveal that wear debris-stimulated FLSs might affect bone loss by not only stimulating osteoclastogenesis but also suppressing the bone-forming ability of osteoprogenitors. In the clinical setting, targeting FLSs for the secretion of antagonists like SOST might be a novel therapeutic approach for preventing bone loss during inflammatory osteolysis.

Functional foods with high nutritive values and potential therapeutic potential is a prerequisite for today's ailing world. Soybeans exert beneficial effects on human health. It contains plentiful polyunsaturated fatty acids and dietary fibers along with several isoflavonoids having bioactivity for improving health. Recent studies have shown that soybean isoflavones can have a positive effect on bone growth. The current study was designed to observe any impact of isoflavone-enriched soy milk powder (I-WSM) on inducing osteogenic properties at cellular and molecular levels. Precisely, we have evaluated the effect of I-WSM on the bone differentiation process. Our results show that I-WSM has the ability to stimulate osteogenic properties in osteoblasts both at the initial and terminal stages of differentiation. Treatment of I-WSM on osteoblasts demonstrates the inductive effect on the expression of osteogenic transcriptional factors like Runx2 and Osterix. Moreover, I-WSM increased the expression of the extracellular matrix protein osteocalcin, required for the formation of scaffold for bone mineralization. The estrogen signaling pathway was utilized by I-WSM to induce osteogenic activity. Taken together, here we report the cellular and molecular events mediated by I-WSM to exert an osteogenic effect in osteoblasts, which will help to understand its mechanism of action and project it as a remedy for the bone-related disease. Taken together, I-WSM has the ability to exert the osteogenic effect in osteoblasts via the estrogen signaling pathway and thus might be projected as a remedy for a bone-related disease like osteoporosis.

OBJECTIVE: Rspondins (RSPOs) are regarded as the significant modulators of WNT signaling pathway and they are expressed dynamically during developmental stages. Since in osteoarthritis (OA) both cartilage and subchondral bone suffer damages and WNT signaling pathway has a crucial role in their maintenance, the objective of the study was to analyze expression profile of RSPO family and its receptors [leucine-rich repeat-containing G-protein coupled receptors (LGRs)] in OA tissue samples as well as in differentiating chondrocytes and osteoblasts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, human early and advanced stage of OA tissue samples were analyzed for the morphological changes of articular cartilage by hematoxylin and eosin (H and E) staining, safranin-O staining and lubricin immunostaining. RSPOs and LGRs expression were confirmed by immunohistochemistry. Human primary chondrocytes and human osteoblast cell line, SaOS-2, were cultured in differentiation medium till day 14 and they were analyzed in terms of expression of RSPOs, LGRs and specific marker for chondrogenesis and osteogenesis by western blotting and quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: Advanced stage OA tissue samples showed increased expression of RSPO1 and LGR6 in a region close to subchondral bone. While RSPO2 and LGR5 expression were seen overlapping in the deep region of articular cartilage. Differentiating chondrocytes demonstrated elevated expression of RSPO2 and LGR5 from day 7 to day 14, whereas, osteoblasts undergoing differentiation showed enhanced expression of RSPO1 and LGR6 from day 2 to day 14. Under tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNFα) stimulatory conditions, RSPO2 and RSPO1 recovered the suppressed expression of inflammatory, chondrogenic and osteogenic markers, respectively. A recovery in the stability of ß-catenin was also noticed in both cases. CONCLUSION: Spatial expression of RSPOs during progression of OA might be dynamically controlled by cartilage and subchondral bone. Interplay amid chondrocytes and osteoblasts, via RSPOs, might provide probable mechanisms for treating inflammatory pathogenic conditions like OA.

BACKGROUND: Smoking is a known risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, but several Korean studies have shown differing results on the association of current smoking status and the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the association between smoking status and CVD (myocardial infarction and stroke) using national representative populationbased samples. The aim was also to investigate the effects of hidden smokers on the association between CVD and smoking. METHODS: Data were acquired from 28,620 participants (12,875 men and 15,745 women), age 19 years or older, who participated in the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) conducted from 2008 to 2016. RESULTS: The multivariable logistic regression analysis showed that ex-smoking status was correlated with CVD when self-reported (odds ratio [OR]: 1.62; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20-2.19) and for survey-cotinine verified-smoking status (OR: 1.57; 95% CI: 1.20-2.19). Interestingly, the present study showed current smoking was not significantly associated with CVD. For the effect of sex on smoking and CVD, self-reported and survey-cotinine-verified ex-smoking status were correlated with CVD in males (OR: 1.45; 95% CI: 1.04-2.04 and OR: 1.43; 95% CI: 1.02-2.02) and in females (OR: 2.74; 95% CI: 1.59-4.71 and OR: 2.92; 95% CI: 1.64-5.18). The ratios of cotinine-verified to self-reported smoking rates were 1.95 for women and 1.08 for men. CONCLUSIONS: In the current study, while ex-smoking status was significantly associated with CVD, current smoking status was not. Female ex-smoking status had a higher adjusted odds ratio for CVD than males compared to non-smoking status. An effect of hidden female smoking was also found on the association between smoking status and CVD in Korean adults.

PURPOSE: Asthma is a heterogeneous airway disease occurring in children, and it has various clinical phenotypes. A clear differentiation of the clinical phenotypes can provide better asthma management and prediction of asthma prognosis. Little is currently known about asthma phenotypes in Korean children. This study was designed to identify asthma phenotypes in school-aged Korean children. METHODS: This study enrolled 674 children with physician-diagnosed asthma from the Korean childhood Asthma Study (KAS) cohort. The physicians verified the relevant histories of asthma and comorbid diseases, as well as airway lability and hyper-responsiveness from the results of pulmonary function tests and bronchial provocation tests. Questionnaires regarding the participants' baseline characteristics, their environment and self-rating of asthma control were collected at the time of enrollment. Laboratory tests were performed to assess allergy and airway inflammation. Children with asthma were classified by hierarchical cluster analysis. RESULTS: Of the 674 patients enrolled from the KAS cohort, 447 were included in the cluster analysis. Cluster analysis of these 447 children revealed 4 asthma phenotypes: cluster 1 (n = 216, 48.3%) which was characterized by male-dominant atopic asthma; cluster 2 (n = 79, 17.7%) which was characterized by early-onset atopic asthma with atopic dermatitis; cluster 3 (n = 47, 10.5%) which was characterized by puberty-onset, female-dominant atopic asthma with the low lung function; and cluster 4 (n = 105, 23.5%) which was characterized by early-onset, non-atopic dominant asthma. CONCLUSIONS: The asthma phenotypes among Korean children can be classified into 4 distinct clusters. Long-term follow-up with these phenotypes will be needed to define their prognosis and response to treatment.

OBJECTIVES: We identified associated factors for depression and suicidality in adolescents with asthma. METHODS: We obtained data from the annual Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys, completed from 2007 to 2017, as a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Using self-reported questionnaires, students provided yes-or-no answers to questions addressing doctor-diagnosed asthma and self-experienced depression and suicidality. Associated factors for depression and suicidality were tested by logistic regression models after controlling for potential confounding factors. A total of 788,411 adolescents completed the survey. RESULTS: The prevalence of asthma was similar every year during the survey with 8.9% overall rate. Among them, the prevalence of depression (45.8-29.9%), suicidal ideation (28.6-15.5%), and suicide attempts (9.3-3.9%) decreased. Participants with asthma perceived themselves as unhealthier and unhappier, had more stress, sleep dissatisfaction, depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts than did subjects without asthma. In the multivariate model, perception of stress was most strongly associated with depression (adjusted Odds ratio: 4.78, 95% confidence intervals; 4.17-5.06) and suicide attempts (2.51; 1.67-2.93), whereas, perceived unhappiness was most strongly associated with suicidal ideation (4.81; 3.87-5.46) among adolescents with asthma. Asthma itself was also associated with depression, suicidal ideation and suicide attempts (1.12; 1.09-1.22, 1.18; 1.07-1.24, and 1.15; 1.04-1.19, respectively). CONCLUSION: Although the prevalence of asthma was similar every year, the prevalence of depression and suicidality among adolescents with asthma decreased. Nevertheless, clinical physicians should pay more attention to screen for depression and suicidality among adolescents with asthma, especially having associated factors.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to investigate the epigenetic role of histone lysine methylation/demethylation on the expression of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) associated transcriptional factors (TFs) during the metastasis of lung adenocarcinoma to the brain. METHODS: Paired samples of lung adenocarcinoma and brain metastasis (BM) were analyzed in 46 individual patients. Both samples were obtained by surgical resection or biopsy of the lung and brain. The paraffin-fixed formalin-embedded samples were obtained from the pathology archives in our institute. In samples of lung adenocarcinoma and BM, immunohistochemical staining was performed for epithelial markers, mesenchymal markers, EMT-TFs, histone lysine methyltransferase and demethylase. RESULTS: The immunoreactivity of EMT-TFs such as Slug (15.6% vs. 42.6%, p = 0.005), Twist (23.6% vs. 45.9%, p = 0.010) and ZEB1 (15.0% vs. 55.9%, p = 0.002) was increased in BM compared with that in lung adenocarcinoma. Epigenetic inducers such as H3K4 methyltransferase (MLL4, p = 0.018) and H3K36me3 demethylase (UTX, p = 0.003) were statistically increased, and epigenetic repressors such as EZH2 (H3K27 methyltransferase, p = 0.046) were significantly decreased in BM compared with those in lung adenocarcinoma. The expression of UTX-ZEB1 (R2 linear = 1.204) and MLL4-Slug (R2 linear = 0.987) was increased in direct proportion, and EZH2-Twist (R2 linear = -2.723) decreased in reverse proportion. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that certain histone lysine methyltransferase/demethylase, such as MLL4, UTX, and EZH2, regulate the expression of EMT-TFs such as Slug, ZEB1, and Twist epigenetically, which may thereby influence cancer metastasis from the lung to the brain.

INTRODUCTION: While electronic cigarette (EC) use is rapidly increasing among asthmatic adolescents, little is known about the links between EC use and depression or suicidality. We assessed associated factors for depression and suicidality in asthmatic adolescents with experience of EC use. METHODS: We analyzed the data from the 11th to 13th Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys, which were completed from 2015 to 2017. Data were obtained from a stratified, multistage, clustered sample. Students supplied 'yes or no' answers to questions about previous asthma diagnosis by a doctor. Associated factors for depression and suicidality were evaluated by logistic regression models after controlling for potential confounding factors. We targeted 203336 adolescents, and 195847 completed the survey. RESULTS: The proportion of asthma among the respondents was 8.9%. The rate of experience of EC use was higher among asthmatic respondents than non-asthmatic respondents (10.3% vs 8.6%). Asthmatic respondents with experience of EC use had a much higher proportion of negative mental health states including depression and suicidality than subjects without EC experience. In our adjusted models, perception of stress was most strongly associated with depression (adjusted odds ratio, AOR=4.79; 95% CI: 4.12-5.58), and perception of unhappiness was most strongly associated with suicidal ideation (AOR=5.24; 95% CI: 4.51-6.09) and suicide attempt (AOR=4.37; 95% CI: 3.36-5.69). CONCLUSIONS: Many Korean asthmatic adolescents with experience of EC use report relatively high depression and suicidal behaviors. A multidisciplinary approach, including psychological help, may be required to prevent suicide among this population, especially those who report associated factors.

Suicide is one of the most common causes of death in adolescents. This study identified trends in the prevalence of and factors influencing suicidal ideation and attempts among Korean adolescents. Data were drawn from the third through the thirteenth (2007-2017) annual Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Surveys. Participants included stratified, multistage clustered samples selected from 400 middle schools and 400 high schools annually. Depression, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts were binary dependent variables (requiring answers of yes or no). A total of 818,684 adolescents were targeted and 788,411 adolescents completed the survey. The prevalence rates of both suicidal ideation and attempts gradually decreased from 23.7% and 5.8%, respectively, in 2007 to 12.1% and 2.6%, respectively, in 2017. Overall, 16.8% of participants had suicidal ideation and 3.9% had suicide attempts during the survey period. During logistic regression analysis, depression was most strongly associated with suicidal ideation (adjusted odds ratio: 5.78 [95% confidence interval: 5.64-5.88]) and suicide attempts (adjusted odds ratio: 5.56, [95% confidence interval: 5.22-5.83]). Despite decreasing trends, the high rate of suicidal behaviors remains a critical public health problem. Depression most strongly predicts suicidal behaviors. Early interventions are essential to treat depression and reduce or prevent suicide.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the associations between dietary habits, emotional states, and subjective oral symptoms in Korean adolescents. METHODS: Data from 62,276 adolescents were derived from the 13th Korean Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey, conducting from June 1, 2017 to June 30, 2017. Oral symptoms were assessed by asking students whether they had experienced any of following symptoms within the last 12 months: (i) have you had a crack in your teeth or had any broken teeth not caused by exercise or other accidents?, (ii) have you experienced any toothaches while drinking or eating cold or hot beverages or foods?, (iii) have you ever felt throbbing in your teeth?, and (iv) have you experienced any gum pain or gum bleeding? A multivariable Poisson regression model for prevalence ratio (PR) was conducted. RESULTS: Of the participants, 53.1% experienced subjective oral symptoms. After adjusting for confounders, participants with consumption of sweet drinks more than five times weekly in dietary behaviors (PR: 1.17 [95% confidence interval (CI); 1.13-1.21]), feeling stress in the emotional state (PR: 1.27 [95% CI; 1.24-1.31]), and never brushing teeth (PR: 1.22 [95% CI; 1.14-1.30]) in the frequency of toothbrushing had higher risks of having oral symptoms compared to the reference group. CONCLUSION: Many adolescents in Korea experienced oral symptoms. The consumption of sweet drinks, infrequent toothbrushing, and a negative emotional state adversely affected perceived oral symptoms. Public concern about the oral health of adolescents is warranted.
