RESUMEN

The development of technology-based home fitness has emerged from the booming digital healthcare market and recent demands for at-home fitness and health equipment due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Digital healthcare company Alyce Healthcare recently developed Weelo, which is a web-based online fitness program. Weelo recommends an exercise protocol through machine-learning-enabled recognition of the user's motion and provides visual and auditory feedback. We evaluated whether Weelo improves physical and mental well-being to assess its capabilities and effectiveness. Thirty-two participants performed a total of 20 exercise sessions following the Weelo guide on a laptop. The participants were evaluated using a before and after exercise program, body composition, handgrip strength, six-minute walk test, modified star excursion balance test, short form 36, fatigue severity scale, Beck depression index, and a satisfaction survey. Overall, there was a significant improvement in muscle strength, endurance, and balance ability, as well as an improved quality of life and significant reduction in fatigue and depression. Participants showed high motivation to continue following the Weelo exercise program. In conclusion, utilizing Weelo improved physical and mental well-being and is considered to be an individual-use indoor exercise program that serves as an alternative to traditional face-to-face exercise.

This study aimed to compare gait analysis and balance function measurements, such as the Berg balance scale (BBS) score to seek specific measurements that can represent the balance functions of patients with brain lesions. Additionally, we also compared other different gait function scale scores with gait analysis measurements. This study included 77 patients with brain lesions admitted to our institution between January 2017 and August 2020. Their gait analysis parameters and clinical data, including personal data; clinical diagnosis; duration of the disease; cognition, ambulation, and stair-climbing sub-scores of the modified Barthel index (MBI); manual muscle test (MMT) findings of both lower extremities; functional ambulation category (FAC); and BBS score, were retrospectively analyzed. A multiple linear regression analysis was performed to identify the gait analysis parameters that would significantly correlate with the balance function and other physical performances. In the results, the BBS scores were significantly correlated with the gait speed and step width/height2. However, the other gait function measurements, such as the FAC and ambulation and stair-climbing sub-scores of the MBI, were correlated only with the gait speed. Additionally, both the summations of the lower extremity MMT findings and anti-gravity lower extremity MMT findings were correlated with the average swing phase time. Therefore, in the gait analysis, the gait speed may be an important factor in determining the balance and gait functions of the patients with brain lesions. Moreover, the step width/height2 may be a significant factor in determining their balance function. However, further studies with larger sample sizes should be performed to confirm this relationship.

BACKGROUND: Ambulatory and balance functions are important for maintaining general health in humans. Gait analysis allows clinicians and researchers to identify the parameters to be focused on when assessing balance and ambulatory functions. In this study, we performed gait analysis with pressure sensors to identify the gait-analysis parameters related to balance and ambulatory functions in hemiplegic stroke patients. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 102 patients with hemiplegic stroke who underwent gait analysis. Correlations between various temporospatial parameters in the gait analysis and the motor and balance functions assessed using functional ambulation category, modified Barthel index, and Berg balance scale were analyzed. RESULTS: Gait speed/height and the lower-limb stance-phase time/height were the only temporal and spatial parameters, respectively, that showed a statistical correlation with motor and balance functions. CONCLUSIONS: Measurements of walking speed and stance-phase time of the unaffected lower limb can allow clinicians to easily assess the ambulatory and balance functions of hemiplegic stroke patients. Rehabilitative treatment focusing on increasing gait speed and shortening the stance-phase time of the unaffected side may improve the ambulatory and balance functions in these patients.

To prepare stabilized TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO2 NPs) in aqueous media as a suspension of the primary particles, we attempted to optimize the conditions for dispersing stable, aggregated TiO2 NPs (A-TiO2 NPs) in aqueous HCl/NaOH solutions or 5 mM pH buffered aqueous solutions. The A-TiO2 NPs with a hydrodynamic diameter (or DLS size) of 150 +/- 20 nm could be dispersed at high concentration (63.5 +/- 0.5 mg/ml) in a 5 mM phosphate buffer (PB) solution of pH 8, and a primary TiO2 (P-TiO2) NP suspension (1.2 +/- 0.3 mg/ml) with DLS size of 30 +/- 5 nm could be separated from the highly concentrated A-TiO2 NP suspension by sonication and subsequent centrifugation. It was observed by comparing the UV-Vis absorption spectra of the A-TiO2 and P-TiO2 NP suspensions that the extinction coefficient of the TiO2 NPs in the aqueous suspension depended on the degree of aggregation. The stabilized P-TiO2 NP suspension in aqueous solution can be used to study nanotoxicity as well as to characterize the physicochemical properties of TiO2 NPs.

Phosphate-based glass fibers (PGFs), due to characteristics such as biodegradability and directionality, could be effective as spatial cues for axonal outgrowth following nerve injury. In the present study, PGF-containing cylindrical scaffolds of 1.8mm diameter and 3mm length were developed and implanted into the gap between the proximal and distal stumps following complete transection of rat spinal cords at T9. The PGF-free collagen scaffolds were implanted into the transected spinal cords of the control group. The open-field Basso, Beattie and Bresnahan locomotor scale revealed that the locomotor function of the experimental group was better than in the control group from 8 to 12 weeks after implantation, and urodynamic analysis revealed additional improvements in the experimental group in some parameters. Twelve weeks after implantation, some axon growth from the proximal and distal stumps to the scaffold was observed in the experimental group but not in the control group. Macrophages surrounded the injured thoracic spinal cord at 1 and 4 weeks after implantation; however, 6h after implantation, the pro-inflammatory cytokines did not differ between the control and experimental groups. Anterograde corticospinal tract (CST) tracing with biotinylated dextran amine showed that, in the experimental group, some CST outgrowths could reach the lumbar enlargement. By 12 weeks, the mRNA levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in the bladder had increased more in the experimental group than in the controls. We conclude that PGFs can have a beneficial effect on functional recovery following complete transection of the thoracic spinal cord in rats.
