RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Current studies on the treatment of adolescent patients with disc displacement without reduction (DDWOR) are limited by short follow-up periods and small sample sizes, and there are few comparative studies on the efficacy of conservative treatment with and without disc reduction for acute DDWOR. This study compared the therapeutic effects of two conservative treatment methods: physical therapy alone and physical therapy combined with non-surgical manual disc reduction and anterior repositioning splints (ARS), in adolescent patients with acute DDWOR. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included adolescent patients with DDWOR who underwent physical therapy at the Temporomandibular Joint Rehabilitation Department of the Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021. Patient assessment data were collected before and after treatment. Patients were followed up through telephone and online questionnaires from March to August 2023. RESULTS: The results indicate that compared to physical therapy alone, the combination of physical therapy and non-surgical manual disc reduction with ARS showed better short-term efficacy, improved mouth opening, and better long-term pain control. Also, it may be effective in preventing degenerative joint disease. CONCLUSIONS: This combination therapy is recommended for clinical application in adolescent patients with acute DDWOR. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The present research demonstrates the superior efficacy of physical therapy and non-surgical manual disc reduction combined with anterior repositioning splint in adolescent patients with acute DDWOR.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have established a link between gut microbiota and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), but little is known about their precise causal relationship. Therefore, this study aims to explore whether there are precise causal relationships between gut microbiota and PCOS. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a bidirectional two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. Datasets were from the largest published meta-analysis on gut microbiota composition and the FinnGen cohort of the IEU Open Genome-Wide Association Study Project database. Inverse variance weighted (IVW), MR-Egger, constrained maximum likelihood-based Mendelian randomization, weighted median, weighted mode, and simple mode were used. Cochran's Q and MR-Egger intercept tests were employed to measure the heterogeneity. RESULTS: A total of 211 gut microbiota taxa were identified in MR analysis. Nine taxa of bacteria, including Alphaproteobacteria (0.55, 0.30-0.99, p = 0.04), Bacilli (1.76, 1.07-2.91, p = 0.03), Bilophila (0.42, 0.23-0.77, p < 0.01), Blautia (0.16, 0.03-0.79, p = 0.02), Burkholderiales (2.37, 1.22-4.62, p = 0.01), Candidatus Soleaferrea (0.65, 0.43-0.98, p = 0.04), Cyanobacteria (0.51, 0.31-0.83, p = 0.01), Holdemania (0.53, 0.35-0.81, p < 0.01), and Lachnospiraceae (1.86, 1.04-3.35, p = 0.03), were found to be associated with PCOS in the above MR methods included at least IVW method. Cochran's Q statistics and MR-Egger intercept test suggested no significant heterogeneity. In addition, 69 taxa were shown significant for at least the IVW method in reverse MR analysis, of these, 25 had a positive correlation, and 37 had a negative correlation. Additionally, Alphaproteobacteria and Lachnospiraceae (0.95, 0.91-0.98, p < 0.01; 0.97, 0.94-0.99, p = 0.02, respectively) were shown a bidirected causally association with PCOS. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides evidence of the bidirectional causal association between gut microbiota and PCOS from a genetic perspective.

This study aims to to establish a diagnosis model based on simple clinical features for children with cervical histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or malignant lymphoma. Simple clinical features of pediatric patients were analyzed to develop a diagnosis model based on a comparison of classical machine-learning algorithms. This was a single-center retrospective study in a tertiary pediatrics hospital. Pediatric patients treated for cervical histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis or malignant lymphoma treated at our institution in recent 5 years were included. Demographic data and laboratory values were recorded and binary logistics regression analysis was applied to select possible predictors to develop diagnostic models with different algorithms. The diagnostic efficiency and stability of each algorithm were evaluated to select the best one to help establish the final model. Eighty-three children were included with 45 cases of histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis and 38 cases of malignant lymphoma. Peak temperature, white blood cell count, monocyte percentage, and urea value were selected as possible predictors based on the binary logistics regression analysis, together with imaging features already reported (size, boundary, and distribution of mass). In the ten-round random testing sets, the discriminant analysis algorithm achieved the best performance with an average accuracy of 89.0% (95% CI 86.2-93.6%) and an average AUC value of 0.971 (95% CI 0.957-0.995). CONCLUSION: A discriminant analysis model based on simple clinical features can be effective in differential diagnosis of cervical histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis and malignant lymphoma in children. Peak body temperature, white blood cell count, and short diameter of the largest mass are significant predictors. WHAT IS KNOWN: • Several multivariate diagnostic models for HNL and ML have been proposed based on B-ultrasound or CT features in adults. • The differences between children and adults are nonnegligible in the clinical featues of HNL. WHAT IS NEW: • The study firstly report a large-sample diagnostic model between the HNL and MLin pediatric patients. • Non-imaging clinical features has also been proven with quite good diagnostic value.

Pannexin1 (PANX1) is a highly glycosylated membrane channel-forming protein, which has been found to implicate in multiple physiological and pathophysiological functions. Variants in the PANX1 gene have been reported to be associated with oocyte death and recurrent in vitro fertilization failure. In this study, we identified a novel heterozygous PANX1 variant (NM_015368.4 c.410 C > T (p.Ser137Leu)) associated with the phenotype of oocyte death in a non-consanguineous family, followed by an autosomal dominant (AD) mode. We explored the molecular mechanism of the novel variant and the variant c.976_978del (p.Asn326del) that we reported previously. Both of the variants altered the PANX1 glycosylation pattern in cultured cells, led to aberrant PANX1 channel activation, affected ATP release and membrane electrophysiological properties, which resulted in mouse and human oocyte death in vitro. For the first time, we presented the direct evidence of the effect of the PANX1 variants on human oocyte development. Our findings expand the variant spectrum of PANX1 genes associated with oocyte death and provide new support for the genetic diagnosis of female infertility.

BACKGROUND: Upper respiratory tract infection (URTI), one of the most common respiratory diseases, has a high annual incidence. Trollius chinensis capsule has been used to treat URTI in China. However, the underlying-mechanisms remain unclear. METHODS: Network pharmacology was used to explore the potential mechanism of action of Trollius chinensis capsule in URTI treatment. The active compounds in Trollius chinensis were obtained from the TCMSP, SymMap, and ETCM databases. The TCMSP, PubChem, and SwissTargetPrediction databases were used to predict potential targets of Trollius chinensis. URTI-associated targets were gathered from GeneCards and DisGeNET databases. The key targets and signaling pathways associated with URTI were selected by network topology, GO, and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis. Molecular docking was used to verify the binding activity between active compounds and key targets. RESULTS: Quercetin, pectolinarigenin, beta-sitosterol, acacetin and cirsimaritin are major active compounds in Trollius chinensis capsule. Eighty one candidate therapeutic targets were confirmed to be involved in protection of Trollius chinensis capsule against URTI. Among them, 7 key targets (TP53, IL6, AKT1, CASP3, CXCL8, MMP9, and EGFR) were verified to have good binding affinities to the main active compounds. Furthermore, enrichment analyses suggested that inflammatory response, virus infection and oxidative stress related biological processes and pathways were possibly the potential mechanism. CONCLUSION: Overall, the present study clarified that quercetin, pectolinarigenin, beta-sitosterol, acacetin and cirsimaritin are proved to be the main effective compounds of Trollius chinensis capsule treating URTI, possibly by acting on the targets of IL6, AKT1, CASP3, CXCL8, MMP9 and EGFR to play anti-infectious, anti-viral, and anti-oxidative effects. This study provides a new understanding of the active compounds and mechanisms of Trollius chinensis capsule in URTI treatment from the perspective of network pharmacology.

Multi-human parsing is an image segmentation task necessitating both instance-level and fine-grained category-level information. However, prior research has typically processed these two types of information through distinct branch types and output formats, leading to inefficient and redundant frameworks. This paper introduces UniParser, which integrates instance-level and category-level representations in three key aspects: 1) we propose a unified correlation representation learning approach, allowing our network to learn instance and category features within the cosine space; 2) we unify the form of outputs of each modules as pixel-level results while supervising instance and category features using a homogeneous label accompanied by an auxiliary loss; and 3) we design a joint optimization procedure to fuse instance and category representations. By unifying instance-level and categorylevel output, UniParser circumvents manually designed post-processing techniques and surpasses state-of-the-art methods, achieving 49.3% AP on MHPv2.0 and 60.4% AP on CIHP. We have released our source code, pretrained models, and demos to facilitate future studies on https://github.com/cjm-sfw/Uniparser.

Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) significantly compromises the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and impairs patient recovery. This study elucidates the critical role of astrocytic Neogenin-1 (NEO1) in BBB integrity post-SAH and examines the regulatory effects of hepcidin on endothelial cell (EC) function amid NEO1-mediated disruptions in iron homeostasis. Proteomic analyses of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from SAH patients revealed a substantial decrease in NEO1 expression, identifying it as a key factor in BBB integrity. 111 CSF proteins were significantly reduced in early SAH stages (days 1-3), with NEO1 among the most significantly altered. This dysregulation was linked to poorer patient outcomes, as indicated by a negative correlation between NEO1 levels and Modified Rankin Scale scores six months post-SAH (R = -0.4743, P < 0.0001). Experimental models further highlighted the importance of NEO1: SAH model and NEO1GFAP-Cre mice exhibited exacerbated EC dysfunction and increased BBB permeability, evidenced by significant Evans Blue retention and dextran leakage in the parietal cortex, effects that were mitigated by hepcidin administration. Our findings highlight the complex interplay between astrocytic signaling and endothelial function in SAH pathophysiology. The loss of astrocytic NEO1 led to increased EC proliferation and altered BBB structure, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and immunostaining for PECAM-1, indicating heightened blood vessel density in the affected cortex. Hepcidin treatment effectively reversed the EC dysfunction and BBB disruption in both NEO1-cKO mice and the SAH model, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent to enhance recovery and improve prognosis following SAH.

Understanding of how different grasslands types respond to climate change and human activities across different spatial and temporal dimensions is crucial for devising effective strategies to prevent grasslands degradation. In this study, we developed a novel vulnerability assessment model for grasslands that intricately evaluates the combined impact of climate change and human activities. We then applied this model to analyze the vulnerability and driving mechanism of four representative Chinese grasslands to climate change and human activities. Our findings indicate that the vulnerability of the four grasslands would show a pattern of higher in the west and lower in the east under the influence of climate change alone. However, when human activities are factored in, the vulnerability across the four grasslands tends to homogenize, with human activities notably reducing the vulnerability of alpine grasslands in the west and, conversely, increasing the vulnerability of grasslands in the east. Furthermore, our study reveals distinct major environmental drivers of grasslands vulnerability across different regions. The two western alpine grasslands exhibit higher vulnerability to annual mean temperature and isothermality compared to the eastern temperate grasslands, while their vulnerability to precipitation of the coldest quarter is lower than that of the eastern temperate grasslands. These findings are helpful for understanding the multifaceted causes and mechanisms of grasslands degradation, providing a scientific foundation for the sustainable management and conservation of grassland resources.

BACKGROUND: An association has been observed between primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) and systemic rheumatic diseases (SRDs) in observational studies, however the exact causal link remains unclear. We aimed to evaluate the causal effects of PBC on SRDs through Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis. METHODS: The genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data were obtained from MRC IEU OpenGWAS and FinnGen databases. Independent genetic variants for PBC were selected as instrumental variables. Inverse variance weighted was used as the main approach to evaluate the causal effects of PBC on Sjögren syndrome (SS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), systemic sclerosis (SSc), mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and polymyositis (PM). Horizontal pleiotropy and heterogeneity were measured by MR‒Egger intercept test and Cochran's Q value, respectively. RESULTS: PBC had causal effects on SS (OR = 1.177, P = 8.02e-09), RA (OR = 1.071, P = 9.80e-04), SLE (OR = 1.447, P = 1.04e-09), SSc (OR = 1.399, P = 2.52e-04), MCTD (OR = 1.306, P = 4.92e-14), and PM (OR = 1.416, P = 1.16e-04). Based on the MR‒Egger intercept tests, horizontal pleiotropy was absent (all P values > 0.05). The robustness of our results was further enhanced by the leave-one-out method. CONCLUSIONS: Our research has provided new insights into PBC and SRDs, indicating casual effects on various SRDs.

Graphene oxide-silver poly(vinylidene fluoride) membranes (PVDF@GO-Ag) were successfully synthesized by the electrospinning method, which exhibited a high catalytic activity using the hydrogenation of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) as a model reaction in a batch reaction study. The hybrid membranes doped with 1 wt% GO and 2 wt% Ag (PVDF-1-2) exhibited the most desired performance for the catalytic reduction of 4-NP. Importantly, PVDF-1-2 exhibited excellent cycling stability in 10 catalytic cycle tests and was highly amenable to separation. This property effectively addresses the significant challenges associated with the practical application of nanocatalysts. Furthermore, density-functional theory (DFT) calculations have demonstrated that the GO-Ag nanocomposites exhibit the strongest adsorption capacity for 4-NP- when a specific ratio of GO and Ag is achieved, accompanied by the loading of Ag nanoclusters onto GO. Additionally, the study demonstrated that an increase in temperature significantly accelerated the reaction rate, in line with the van't Hoff rule. This study provides an effective and environmentally friendly solution for the treatment of 4-NP in wastewater.

In 1985, Professor KWOH first introduced robots into neurosurgery. Since then, advancements of stereotactic frames, radiographic imaging, and neuronavigation have led to the dominance of classic stereotactic robots. A comprehensive retrieval was performed using academic databases and search agents to acquire professional information, with a cutoff date of June, 2024. This reveals a multitude of emerging technologies are coming to the forefront, including tremor filtering, motion scaling, obstacle avoidance, force sensing, which have made significant contributions to the high efficiency, high precision, minimally invasive, and exact efficacy of robot-assisted neurosurgery. Those technologies have been applied in innovative magnetic resonance-compatible neurosurgical robots, such as Neuroarm and Neurobot, with real-time image-guided surgery. Despite these advancements, the major challenge is considered as magnetic resonance compatibility in terms of space, materials, driving, and imaging. Future research directions are anticipated to focus on 1) robotic precise perception; 2) artificial intelligence; and 3) the advancement of telesurgery.

Recryopreservation (recryo) is occasionally applied in clinical, while the underlying mechanism of impaired clinical outcomes after recryo remains unclear. In this study, frozen embryo transfer (FET) cycles of single blastocyst transfer in an academic reproductive medicine center were enrolled. According to the number of times blastocysts experienced cryopreservation, they were divided into the cryopreservation (Cryo) group and the Recryo group. Donated human blastocysts were collected and detected for mechanism exploration. It was found that recryo procedure resulted in impaired blastocyst developmental potential, including decreased implantation rate, reduced biochemical pregnancy rate, declined clinical pregnancy rate, higher early miscarriage rate, and lower live birth rate. Moreover, recryo led to impaired trophectoderm (TE) function, exhibiting lower human chorionic gonadotropin levels 12 days after FET. In addition, single-cell RNA sequencing showed that the expression of genes involved in cell adhesion and embryo development were altered. More specifically, activated endoplasmic reticulum (ER) pathway and induced apoptosis were further verified by immunofluorescence and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP nick-end labeling (TUNEL) assay involving in the recryo procedure. In conclusion, recryo could interfere with the process of blastocyst implantation by impairing TE function, affecting blastocyst adhesion, activating ER stress pathway and inducing apoptosis. It provides caution to embryologists about the potential risk of recryopreservation.

The core principles of multicomponent interface and electronic structure engineering are essential in designing high-performance catalysts for the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). However, combining these aspects within a catalyst is a significant challenge. In this investigation, a novel approach involving the development of hybrid Ir-doped CoMO4-Co(OH)2 (M = W and Mo) hollow nanoboxes was introduced, enabling remarkably efficient water oxidation electrocatalysis. Constructed from ultrathin nanosheet-assembled hollow nanoboxes, these structures boast a wealth of active centers for intermediate species, which in turn enhance both charge transfer and mass transport capabilities. Moreover, the compelling electronic and synergistic effects arising from the interaction between CoMO4 and Co(OH)2 significantly bolster OER electrocatalysis by facilitating efficient electron transfer. The introduction of Ir atoms serves to strategically adjust the electronic structure, fine-tune its electronic state, and operate as active centers to enhance OER electrocatalysis, thus diminishing the overpotential. This configuration results in Ir-CoWO4-Co(OH)2 and Ir-CoMoO4-Co(OH)2 exhibiting impressively low overpotentials of 252 and 261 mV, respectively, to 10 mA cm-2. Utilized in conjunction with the Pt/C catalyst in a two-electrode system for overall water splitting, a mere 1.53 V cell potential is needed to achieve the desired 10 mA cm-2 current density.

Tailoring the dynamic reconstruction of transition metal compounds into highly active oxyhydroxides through surface electron state modification is crucial for advancing water oxidation, yet remains a formidable challenge. In this study, a unique polyaniline (PANI) electron bridge was integrated into the metal-organic frameworks (MOFs)/layer double hydroxides (LDHs) heterojunction to expedite electron transfer from MOFs to LDHs, facilitating electron accumulation at the metal sites within MOF and electron-deficient LDHs. This configuration promotes the surface dynamic reconstruction of LDHs into highly active oxyhydroxides while safeguarding the MOF from corrosion in harsh environments over extended periods. The optimized electronic structure modification of both MOFs and LDHs enhances reaction kinetics. The superior MIL-88B(Fe)@PANI@NiCo LDH catalyst achieved 10 mA∙cm-2 at an overpotential of 202 mV and demonstrated stable operation for 120 h at this current density. This research introduces an innovative approach for guiding electron transfer and dynamic catalyst reconstruction by constructing a PANI electron bridge, potentially paving the way for more efficient catalytic systems.

Doping in semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) using optically active dopants tailors their optical, electronic, and magnetic properties beyond what is achieved by controlling size, shape, and composition. Herein, we synergistically modulated the optical properties of eco-friendly ZnInSe2/ZnSe core/shell QDs by incorporating Cu-doping and Mn-alloying into their core and shell to investigate their use in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption. The engineered "Cu:ZnInSe2/Mn:ZnSe" core/shell QDs exhibit an intense bright orange photoluminescence (PL) emission centered at 606 nm, with better color purity than controlled QDs. The average PL lifetime is significantly prolonged to 201 ns, making it relevant for complex encryption and anti-counterfeiting. PL studies reveal that in Cu:ZnInSe2/Mn:ZnSe, the photophysical emission arises from the Cu state via radiative transition from the Mn 4T1 state. Integration of Cu:ZnInSe2/Mn:ZnSe core/shell QDs into poly(methyl methacrylate) serves as versatile smart concealed luminescent inks for both writing and printing patterns. The features of these printed patterns using Cu:ZnInSe2/Mn:ZnSe core/shell QDs persisted after 10 weeks of water-soaking and retained 70% of their PL emission intensity at 170 °C, demonstrating excellent thermal stability. This work provides an efficient approach to enhance both the emission and stability of eco-friendly QDs via dopant engineering for fluorescence anti-counterfeiting applications.

BACKGROUND: Cervical and breast cancers are among the top 4 leading causes of cancer-related mortality in women. This study aimed to examine age-specific temporal trends in mortality for cervical and breast cancers in urban and rural areas of China from 2009 to 2021. METHODS: Age-specific mortality data for cervical and breast cancers among Chinese women aged 20-84 years were obtained from China's National Disease Surveillance Points system spanning the years 2009 to 2021. Negative binomial regression models were utilized to assess urban-rural differences in mortality rate ratios, while Joinpoint models with estimated average annual percent changes (AAPC) and slopes were employed to compare temporal trends and the acceleration of mortality rates within different age groups. RESULTS: From 2009 to 2021, there was a relative increase in age-specific mortality associated with the two cancers observed in rural areas compared with urban areas. A rising trend in the screening age of 35-64 [AAPC: 4.0%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.5-7.6%, P = 0.026] for cervical cancer was noted in rural areas, while a stable trend (AAPC: - 0.7%, 95% CI - 5.8 to 4.6%, P = 0.78) was observed in urban areas. As for breast cancer, a stable trend (AAPC: 0.3%, 95% CI - 0.3 to 0.9%, P = 0.28) was observed in rural areas compared to a decreasing trend (AAPC: - 2.7%, 95% CI - 4.6 to - 0.7%, P = 0.007) in urban areas. Urban-rural differences in mortality rates increased over time for cervical cancer but decreased for breast cancer. Mortality trends for both cervical and breast cancers showed an increase with age across 4 segments, with the most significant surge in mortality observed among the 35-54 age group across urban and rural areas, periods, and regions in China. CONCLUSIONS: Special attention should be given to women aged 35-54 years due to mortality trends and rural-urban disparities. Focusing on vulnerable age groups and addressing rural-urban differences in the delivery of cancer control programs can enhance resource efficiency and promote health equity.

STUDY QUESTION: Can the density of the inner cell mass (ICM) be a new indicator of the quality of the human blastocyst? SUMMARY ANSWER: The densification index (DI) developed in this study can quantify ICM density and provide positive guidance for ploidy, pregnancy, and live birth. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: In evaluating the quality of ICM, reproductive care clinics still use size indicators without further evaluation. The main disadvantage of this current method is that the evaluation of blastocyst ICM is relatively rough and cannot meet the needs of clinical embryologists, especially when multiple blastocysts have the same ICM score, which makes them difficult to evaluate further. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION: This observational study included data from 2272 blastocysts in 1991 frozen-thawed embryo transfer (FET) cycles between January 2018 to November 2021 and 1105 blastocysts in 430 preimplantation genetic testing cycles between January 2019 and February 2023. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS: FET, ICSI, blastocyst culture, trophectoderm biopsy, time-lapse (TL) monitoring, and next-generation sequencing were performed. After preliminary sample size selection, the 11 focal plane images captured by the TL system were normalized and the spatial frequency was used to construct the DI of the ICM. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: This study successfully constructed a quantitative indicator DI that can reflect the degree of ICM density in terms of fusion and texture features. The higher the DI value, the better the density of the blastocyst ICM, and the higher the chances that the blastocyst was euploid (P < 0.001) and that pregnancy (P < 0.001) and live birth (P = 0.005) were reached. In blastocysts with ICM graded B and blastocysts graded 4BB, DI was also positively associated with ploidy, pregnancy, and live birth (P < 0.05). ROC analysis showed that combining the Gardner scoring system with DI can more effectively predict pregnancy and live births, when compared to using the Gardner scoring system alone. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION: Accurate calculation of the DI value places high demands on image quality, requiring manual selection of the clearest focal plane and exposure control. Images with the ICM not completely within the field of view cannot be used. The association between the density of ICM and chromosomal mosaicism was not evaluated. The associations between the density of ICM and different assisted reproductive technologies and different culture conditions in embryo laboratories were also not evaluated. Prospective studies are needed to further investigate the impact of ICM density on clinical outcomes. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: ICM density assessment is a new direction in blastocyst assessment. This study explores new ways of assessing blastocyst ICM density and develops quantitative indicators and a corresponding qualitative evaluation scheme for ICM density. The DI of the blastocyst ICM developed in this study is easy to calculate and requires only TL equipment and image processing, providing positive guidance for clinical outcomes. The qualitative evaluation scheme of ICM density can assist embryologists without TL equipment to manually evaluate ICM density. ICM density is a simple indicator that can be used in practice and is a good complement to the blastocyst scoring systems currently used in most centers. Proto-oncogenic MYC is frequently dysregulated in colorectal cancer (CRC). In the past decades, long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as important regulators in cancers, acting as scaffolds, molecular decoys, post-transcriptional regulators, and others. Interestingly, lncRNAs are able to control MYC expression both at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. It is suggested that the reciprocal interaction of MYC and lncRNAs often occurs in CRC. MYC can affect the cell fate by promoting or inhibiting the transcription of some lncRNAs. At the same time, some lncRNAs can also affect MYC expression or transcriptional activity, and in turn decide the cell fate. In this review we summarized the current knowledge about the MYC and lncRNA axis, focusing on its mutual regulation, roles in CRC, and proposed potential therapeutic prospects for CRC treatment.

Glycosylation and phosphorylation rank as paramount post-translational modifications, and their analysis heavily relies on enrichment techniques. In this work, a facile approach was developed for the one-step simultaneous enrichment and stepwise elution of glycoproteins and phosphoproteins. The core of this approach was the application of the novel titanium (IV) ion immobilized poly(glycidyl methacrylate) microparticles functionalized with dendrimer polyethylenimine and phytic acid. The microparticles possessed dual enrichment capabilities due to their abundant titanium ions and hydroxyl groups on the surface. They demonstrate rapid adsorption equilibrium (within 30 min) and exceptional adsorption capacity for ß-casein (1107.7 mg/g) and horseradish peroxidase (438.6 mg/g), surpassing that of bovine serum albumin (91.7 mg/g). Furthermore, sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis was conducted to validate the enrichment capability. Experimental results across various biological samples, including standard protein mixtures, non-fat milk, and human serum, demonstrated the remarkable ability of these microparticles to enrich low-abundance glycoproteins and phosphoproteins from biological samples.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have indicated the association between smooth endoplasmic reticulum aggregates (SERa+) and poorer medically assisted reproduction outcomes. However, the link between SERa+ and neonatal outcomes remains controversial and open for debate. A comprehensive meta-analysis on the relation between SERa+ and the risk of birth defects is needed. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The literature search was conducted using the following databases: PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Libraries, Web of Science, and Chinese databases including China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wan Fang from inception until July 2023. Risk ratio (RR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated by a fixed-effected model, while heterogeneity was assessed by forest plots and I2 statistic. Funnel plot was produced to assess publication bias. This meta-analysis has been registered on PROSPERO (CRD42022313387). RESULTS: The search resulted in 122 studies, 14 of which met the inclusion criteria. The analysis of birth defects revealed a higher risk (RR = 2.17, 95%CI 1.24 to 3.81, p = 0.007) in children derived from SERa+ cycle compared to SERa- cycles (711 vs. 4633). Meanwhile, in a subgroup analysis, the risk of birth defects was significantly increased in the SERa+ oocytes group as compared with the sibling SERa- oocytes group (RR = 3.53, 95%CI 1.21 to 10.24, p = 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: To conclude, our analysis indicated that SERa+ cycles/oocytes may have a potential risk of increased additional major birth defects comparing with SERa- cycles/oocytes. This conclusion may provide evidence-based support for clinicians in IVF clinical guidance and embryologists in prudent embryo selection strategy.
