BACKGROUND: Double-negative T (DNT) cells comprise a distinct subset of T lymphocytes that have been implicated in immune responses. The aim of this study was to characterize the peripheral DNT population in breast cancer (BC) patients. METHODS: DNT cells were isolated from the peripheral blood samples of BC patients and healthy controls by flow cytometry. The sorted DNT cells were analyzed by the Smart-seq2 for single-cell full-length transcriptome profiling. The differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between the BC and control groups were screened and functionally annotated by Gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses using R. The protein-protein interaction (PPI) network of the DEGs was constructed using the CytoHubba and MCODE plug-in of Cytoscape software to identify the core genes. Survival status, DNA methylation level, immune infiltration and immune checkpoint expression were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier Plotter, UALCAN, MethSeuvr, TIMER, and TISIDB respectively. The sequencing results were verified by RT-qPCR. RESULT: The percentage of DNT cells was higher in the BC patients compared to healthy controls. We identified 289 DEGs between the DNT populations of both groups. GO and KEGG pathway analyses revealed that the DEGs were mainly related to immunoglobulin mediated immune response, complement activation, and B cell receptor signaling. The PPI networks of the common DEGs were constructed using Cytoscape, and 10 core genes were identified, including TMEM176B, C1QB, C1QC, RASD2, and IFIT3. The expression levels of these genes correlated with the prognosis and immune infiltration in BC patients, and were validated by RT-qPCR (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: DNT cells are abundant in patients with BC, and might exert anti-tumor immune responses by regulating genes such as TMEM176B and EGR1.

Modulating charge transfer (CT) interactions between donor and acceptor molecules may give rise to unique dynamic changes in physicochemical properties, exhibiting great importance in supramolecular chemistry and materials science. In this work, we demonstrate the first instance of reversible photomodulation of donor-acceptor (D-A) CT interaction in the solid state.Pyridinium-based chromophore featuring π-conjugated D-A structures can not only function as a good electron acceptor to undergo photoinduced electron transfer (ET) or engage in intermolecular CT interaction, but also exhibit unique dual emission depending on the excitation wavelengths. The rotatable C-C single bonds within D-A pairs enhance the tunability of molecular structure. Through the synergy of a photoinduced ET and an excited-state conformational change, the intermolecular CT interaction can be switched on and off by alternate light irradiation to enables reversibly modulation of the affinity between donor and acceptor molecules, accompanied by visual color switching and fluorescence on-off as feedback signals.

Emerging reconfigurable metasurfaces offer various possibilities for programmatically manipulating electromagnetic waves across spatial, spectral, and temporal domains, showcasing great potential for enhancing terahertz applications. However, they are hindered by limited tunability, particularly evident in relatively small phase tuning over 270°, due to the design constraints with time-intensive forward design methodologies. Here, a multi-bit programmable metasurface is demonstrated capable of terahertz beam steering facilitated by a developed physics-informed inverse design (PIID) approach. Through integrating a modified coupled mode theory (MCMT) into residual neural networks, the PIID algorithm not only significantly increases the design accuracy compared to conventional neural networks but also elucidates the intricate physical relations between the geometry and the modes. Without decreasing the reflection intensity, the method achieves the enhanced phase tuning as large as 300°. Additionally, the inverse-designed programmable beam steering metasurface is experimentally validated, which is adaptable across 1-bit, 2-bit, and tri-state coding schemes, yielding a deflection angle up to 68° and broadened steering coverage. The demonstration provides a promising pathway for rapidly exploring advanced metasurface devices, with potentially great impact on communication and imaging technologies.

BACKGROUND: In June 2019, a patient presented with persistent fever and multiple organ dysfunction after a tick bite at a wetland park in Inner Mongolia. Next-generation sequencing in this patient revealed an infection with a previously unknown orthonairovirus, which we designated Wetland virus (WELV). METHODS: We conducted active hospital-based surveillance to determine the prevalence of WELV infection among febrile patients with a history of tick bites. Epidemiologic investigation was performed. The virus was isolated, and its infectivity and pathogenicity were investigated in animal models. RESULTS: WELV is a member of the orthonairovirus genus in the Nairoviridae family and is most closely related to the tickborne Hazara orthonairovirus genogroup. Acute WELV infection was identified in 17 patients from Inner Mongolia, Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning, China, by means of reverse-transcriptase-polymerase-chain-reaction assay. These patients presented with nonspecific symptoms, including fever, dizziness, headache, malaise, myalgia, arthritis, and back pain and less frequently with petechiae and localized lymphadenopathy. One patient had neurologic symptoms. Common laboratory findings were leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and elevated d-dimer and lactate dehydrogenase levels. Serologic assessment of convalescent-stage samples obtained from 8 patients showed WELV-specific antibody titers that were 4 times as high as those in acute-phase samples. WELV RNA was detected in five tick species and in sheep, horses, pigs, and Transbaikal zokors (Myospalax psilurus) sampled in northeastern China. The virus that was isolated from the index patient and ticks showed cytopathic effects in human umbilical-vein endothelial cells. Intraperitoneal injection of the virus resulted in lethal infections in BALB/c, C57BL/6, and Kunming mice. The Haemaphysalis concinna tick is a possible vector that can transovarially transmit WELV. CONCLUSIONS: A newly discovered orthonairovirus was identified and shown to be associated with human febrile illnesses in northeastern China. A hypervalent iodine-reagent-based C-H functionalization strategy was utilized to synthesize diaryl ethers. This method directly transforms various arenes into their corresponding diaryliodonium salts, followed by a C-O coupling reaction to produce structurally diverse diaryl ethers. The efficacy of this approach in the late-stage structural modifications of complex molecules was demonstrated.

The development of facile and convenient atom-economical methods for the preparation of organosulfur compounds from CS2 is a challenging endeavor. Herein, a one-pot, environmentally friendly method to access S-aryl/alkyl dithiocarbamates has been demonstrated by a three-component coupling involving aryl/alkyl thiols, CS2 and amines in the presence of a common base K2CO3. The transformation process can proceed in an H2O-DMAc (3 : 1) mixed solvent without requiring any catalysts or extensive prefunctionalization of reactants. The protocol is operationally simple and affords dithiocarbamates with various moieties (including aryl, aliphatic, heteroaryl and alkenyl) in good yields.

INTRODUCTION: Intrahepatic primary osteosarcoma is a rare disease with a very low incidence but a very poor prognosis. A total of 12 cases have been previously reported, and in most of these cases, intra-focal calcification was observed. This paper aims to report a case of non-calcified intrahepatic primary osteosarcoma. CASE DESCRIPTION: We hereby report a female patient with hepatitis B for 20 years, identified during a routine examination due to a mass in the right lobe of the liver. The patient experienced no significant discomfort, and the serological tumor markers were not elevated. Surgical resection was performed after comprehensive examinations, and postoperative pathology showed primary osteosarcoma of the liver. The patient experienced recurrence and metastasis seven months postoperatively and died eight and a half months postoperatively. CONCLUSION: Intrahepatic primary osteosarcoma is an extremely rare disease, and it currently requires a combination of clinical, radiological, and pathological findings to make a diagnosis of exclusion. Further, patients may benefit from early diagnosis, aggressive surgery, and post-operative chemotherapy.

OBJECTIVES: To explore the clinical value of the renal phosphorus threshold (ratio of tubular maximum reabsorption of phosphate to glomerular filtration rate, TmP/GFR) in the diagnosis and treatment of children with X-linked hypophosphatemic rickets (XLH). METHODS: A retrospective study was conducted, including 83 children diagnosed with XLH at Children's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University from January 2010 to January 2023. Initial diagnosis and follow-up data were collected to investigate the correlation of TmP/GFR with the severity of rickets, calcium and phosphorus metabolism indicators, and the dosage of phosphate treatment. Children were divided into two groups based on the occurrence of renal calcification: the renal calcification group (n=47) and the non-renal calcification group (n=36). Clinical data between the two groups were compared. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to identify factors influencing renal calcification in XLH children. The predictive value of TmP/GFR for renal calcification in XLH children was evaluated using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. RESULTS: In the 83 XLH children, the initial TmP/GFR was (0.78±0.21) mmol/L, with significant individual variation (range: 0.28-1.24 mmol/L). TmP/GFR showed no significant correlation with the severity of rickets (P>0.05). Parathyroid hormone was negatively correlated with TmP/GFR (rs=-0.020, P=0.008), while blood phosphorus (rs=0.384, P<0.001), blood calcium (rs=0.251, P<0.001), and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (rs=0.179, P<0.001) were positively correlated with TmP/GFR. No significant correlation was found between TmP/GFR and alkaline phosphatase (rs=-0.002, P=0.960) or phosphate treatment dosage (rs=0.012, P=0.800). Blood calcium and TmP/GFR levels were significantly lower in the renal calcification group than in the non-renal calcification group (P<0.05), while parathyroid hormone and urine calcium levels were significantly higher in the renal calcification group (P<0.05). Multivariate logistic regression analysis indicated that TmP/GFR and urine calcium levels were closely associated with renal calcification in XLH children (P<0.05). ROC curve analysis revealed that the areas under the curve for TmP/GFR, urine calcium, and their combined detection predicting renal calcification in XLH children were 0.696, 0.679, and 0.761, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: TmP/GFR may serve as an important diagnostic indicator for pediatric XLH; however, it does not reflect the severity or activity of rickets and cannot be used to judge the efficacy of traditional treatment. Urine calcium and TmP/GFR are valuable predictors for renal calcification in XLH children.

Background and Aims: Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and its more advanced form, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, have emerged as the most prevalent liver diseases worldwide. Currently, lifestyle modification is the foremost guideline-recommended management strategy for MASLD. However, it remains unclear which detrimental signals persist in MASLD even after disease remission. Thus, we aimed to examine the persistent changes in liver transcriptomic profiles following this reversal. Methods: Male C57BL/6J mice were divided into three groups: Western diet (WD) feeding, chow diet (CD) feeding, or diet reversal from WD to CD. After 16 weeks of feeding, RNA sequencing was performed on the mice's livers to identify persistent alterations characteristic of MASLD. Additionally, RNA sequencing databases containing high-fat diet-fed P53-knockout mice and human MASLD samples were utilized. Results: WD-induced MASLD triggered persistent activation of the DNA damage response (DDR) and its primary transcription factor, P53, long after the resolution of the hepatic phenotype through dietary reversal. Elevated levels of P53 might promote apoptosis, thereby exacerbating metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis, as they strongly correlated with hepatocyte ballooning, an indicator of apoptosis activation. Moreover, P53 knockout in mice led to downregulated expression of apoptosis signaling in the liver. Mechanistically, P53 may regulate apoptosis by transcriptionally activating the expression of apoptosis-enhancing nuclease (AEN). Consistently, P53, AEN, and the apoptosis process all exhibited persistently elevated expression and showed a strong inter-correlation in the liver following dietary reversal. Conclusions: The liver demonstrated upregulation of DDR signaling and the P53-AEN-apoptosis axis both during and after exposure to WD. Our findings provide new insights into the mechanisms of MASLD relapse, highlighting DDR signaling as a promising target to prevent MASLD recurrence.

OBJECTIVE: Robot guidance (RG) and computer-assisted navigation (CAN) have been increasingly utilized for posterior cervical screw placement in cervical spine surgery, and cervical screw malposition may contribute to catastrophic complications. However, the superiority of the navigation using RG or CAN compared with conventional freehand (FH) techniques remains controversial, and no meta-analysis comparing the two methods in cervical spine surgery has been performed. METHODS: The PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Wanfang databases were searched for eligible literature. Studies reporting the primary outcomes of the accuracy of cervical screw placement using RG or CAN compared with FH techniques were included. Bias was evaluated using the Cochrane risk of bias criteria and the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The outcomes were evaluated in terms of odds ratio or standardized mean difference and corresponding 95% confidence interval. RESULTS: One randomized controlled trial and 18 comparative cohort studies published between 2012 and 2023 consisting of 946 patients and 4163 cervical screws were included in this meta-analysis. The RG and CAN techniques were associated with a substantially higher rate of optimal and clinically acceptable cervical screw accuracy than FH techniques. Furthermore, compared with the FH group, the navigation group showed fewer postoperative adverse events, less blood loss, shorter hospital lengths of stay, and lower postoperative Neck Disability Index scores. However, the navigation and FH groups had equivalent intraoperative times and postoperative visual analog scale and Japanese Orthopaedic Association scores at the final follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Both RG and CAN are superior to FH techniques in terms of the accuracy of cervical screw placement. Navigation techniques, including RG and CAN methods, are accurate, safe, and feasible in cervical spine surgery.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established a correlation between the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and sarcopenia. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is an integrated measure that reflects the overall balance of antioxidants and pro-oxidants in dietary components and lifestyle. However, there are limited reports on the association between OBS and lean mass and the impact of protein intake on the association between OBS and lean mass. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018, multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations between OBS and outcomes. The findings were then illustrated through fitted smoothing curves and threshold effect analyses. RESULTS: This study included 2,441 participants, demonstrating that higher OBS is significantly associated with an increased ratio of appendicular lean mass to body mass index. Key inflection points at OBS 31 mark pronounced changes in these associations, with age and protein intake notably affecting the association. The effect of OBS on lean mass varies among populations with high and low protein intake. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that OBS is significantly and positively associated with lean mass. A high protein intake of more than 84.5 g/day may enhance the role of OBS in influencing muscle health to improve muscle outcomes.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of hydroxybutyl chitosan (HBCS) with and without 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) during endoscopic endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (Endo-DCR). In addition, the present study observed the impact of HBCS and 5-FU on the functions of the nasal mucosal cell population in vivo. METHODS: Patients were randomized into HBCS (group A), HBCS combined with 5-FU (group B), and gelatin sponge control group (group C). 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing technology examined the conjunctival sac and nasal flora changes. In addition, CCK8, cell scratching, and flow cytometry were used to investigate the effects of HBCS and 5-FU on the nasal mucosal cell populations. RESULTS: Subjects in groups A, B, and C had anastomotic areas of 21.83 ± 12.69 mm2, 21.57 ± 14.53 mm2, and 12.45 ± 8.16 mm2, respectively (P = 0.0359). Group A had less severe epiphora than the other two groups at 1-, 2-, and 12-week postoperative follow-up (P < 0.05). Complications around the anastomosis in group A were the least severe of the three groups (P = 0.0259). After surgery, the proportion of pathogenic bacteria in the conjunctival sac and nasal cavity was higher in groups A and B than in healthy adults. At the 2-week follow-up, the structure of nasal flora in group A was more similar to that of the healthy adults compared to group B. CONCLUSION: Intraoperative use of HBCS at the anastomose improves the postoperative outcome of En-DCR. 5-FU cannot give better postoperative results in En-DCR and is detrimental to the normalization of the postoperative flora in patients with chronic dacryocystitis. At the cellular level, both HBCS and 5-FU inhibit the migration of nasal mucosal cell populations, and 5-FU inhibits proliferation but does not promote apoptosis.

BACKGROUND: The cycle threshold (Ct) value is inversely proportional to the number of copies of the target region in a sample, suggesting that a low Ct value indicates a high pathogen load. The relationship between Ct value and clinical presentation in children with pertussis is not well-defined. METHODS: We investigated the relationships between the Ct value of nasopharyngeal samples positive for Bordetella pertussis deoxyribonucleic acid via real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), collected from children on admission and their adult family members between May 2022 and March 2024 at Hangzhou Children's Hospital, China. The study focused on the correlation between Ct value and clinical presentation in children with pertussis. RESULTS: The Ct value was positively correlated with age (r = 0.362, P = 0.001). The mean Ct value for children with pertussis was 28.0 (range: 22.0-32.0), which was lower than the 32.0 (range: 30.0-34.0) observed in adults. Ct value was inversely correlated with length of stay, an indicator of disease severity (r = -0.356, P = 0.001). Logistic regression analyses revealed that both Ct value (OR: 0.891, 95% CI: 0.799-0.993, P = 0.036) and white blood cell count (OR: 1.127, 95% CI: 1.005-1.263, P = 0.040) were independently associated with severity of pertussis. CONCLUSIONS: Real-time PCR Ct values at initial diagnosis for pertussis may potentially predict severe disease outcomes in children.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether the combination of chemotherapy with staged Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) therapy could enhance health-related quality of life (QoL) in non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients and prolong the time before deterioration of lung cancer symptoms, in comparison to chemotherapy alone. METHODS: A prospective, double-blind, randomized, controlled trial was conducted from December 14, 2017 to August 28, 2020. A total of 180 patients with stage I B-IIIA NSCLC from 5 hospitals in Shanghai were randomly divided into chemotherapy combined with CHM (chemo+CHM) group (120 cases) or chemotherapy combined with placebo (chemo+placebo) group (60 cases) using stratified blocking randomization. The European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC) Quality-of-Life-Core 30 Scale (QLQ-C30) was used to evaluate the patient-reported outcomes (PROs) during postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with early-stage NSCLC. Adverse events (AEs) were assessed in the safety analysis. RESULTS: Out of the total 180 patients, 173 patients (116 in the chemo+CHM group and 57 in the chemo+placebo group) were included in the PRO analyses. The initial mean QLQ-C30 Global Health Status (GHS)/QoL scores at baseline were 57.16 ± 1.64 and 57.67 ± 2.25 for the two respective groups (P>0.05). Compared with baseline, the chemo+CHM group had an improvement in EORTC QLQ-C30 GHS/QoL score at week 18 [least squares mean (LSM) change 17.83, 95% confidence interval (CI) 14.29 to 21.38]. Conversely, the chemo+placebo group had a decrease in the score (LSM change -13.67, 95% CI -22.70 to -4.63). A significant between-group difference in the LSM GHS/QoL score was observed, amounting to 31.63 points (95% CI 25.61 to 37.64, P<0.001). The similar trends were observed in physical functioning, fatigue and appetite loss. At week 18, patients in the chemo+CHM group had a higher proportion of improvement or stabilization in GHS/QoL functional and symptom scores compared to chemo+placebo group (P<0.001). The median time to deterioration was longer in the chemo+CHM group for GHS/QoL score [hazard ratio (HR)=0.33, 95% CI 0.23 to 0.48, P<0.0010], physical functioning (HR=0.43, 95% CI 0.25 to 0.75, P=0.0005), fatigue (HR=0.47, 95% CI 0.30 to 0.72, P<0.0001) and appetite loss (HR=0.65, 95% CI 0.42 to 1.00, P=0.0215). The incidence of AEs was lower in the chemo+CHM group than in the chemo+placebo group (9.83% vs. 15.79%, P=0.52). CONCLUSION: The staged CHM therapy could help improve the PROs of postoperative patients with early-stage NSCLC during adjuvant chemotherapy, which is worthy of further clinical research. Multi-functional cysteine-targeting covalent warheads possess significant therapeutic potential in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. Herein, we present novel unsaturated and asymmetric ketone (oxazolinosene) scaffolds that selectively conjugate cysteine residues of peptides and bovine serum albumin under normal physiological conditions. This unsaturated saccharide depletes GSH in NCI-H1299 cells, leading to anti-tumor effects in vitro. The acetyl group of the ketal moiety on the saccharide ring can be converted to other carboxylic acids in a one-pot synthesis. In this way, the loaded acid can be click-released during cysteine conjugation, making the oxazolinosene a potential multifunctional therapeutic agent. The reaction kinetic model for oxazolinosene conjugation to GSH is well established and was used to evaluate oxazolinosene reactivity. The aforementioned oxazolinosenes were stereoselectively synthesized via a one-step reaction of nitriles with saccharides and conveniently converted into a series of α, ß-unsaturated ketone N-glycosides as prevalent synthetic building blocks. The reaction mechanisms of oxazolinosene synthesis were investigated through calculations and validated with control experiments. Overall, these oxazolinosenes can be easily synthesized and developed as cysteine-targeted covalent warheads carrying useful click-releasing groups.

Sepsis is now defined as a life-threatening syndrome of organ dysfunction triggered by a dysregulated host response to infection, posing significant challenges in critical care. The main objective of this review is to evaluate the potential of emerging biomarkers for early diagnosis and accurate prognosis in sepsis management, which are pivotal for enhancing patient outcomes. Despite advances in supportive care, traditional biomarkers like C-reactive protein and procalcitonin have limitations, and recent studies have identified novel biomarkers with increased sensitivity and specificity, including circular RNAs, HOXA distal transcript antisense RNA, microRNA-486-5p, protein C, triiodothyronine, and prokineticin 2. These emerging biomarkers hold promising potential for the early detection and prognostication of sepsis. They play a crucial role not only in diagnosis but also in guiding antibiotic therapy and evaluating treatment effectiveness. The introduction of point-of-care testing technologies has brought about a paradigm shift in biomarker application, enabling swift and real-time patient evaluation. Despite these advancements, challenges persist, notably concerning biomarker variability and the lack of standardized thresholds. This review summarizes the latest advancements in sepsis biomarker research, spotlighting the progress and clinical implications. It emphasizes the significance of multi-biomarker strategies and the feasibility of personalized medicine in sepsis management. Further verification of biomarkers on a large scale and their integration into clinical practice are advocated to maximize their efficacy in future sepsis treatment.

The gut microbiota, a pivotal component of the intestinal mucosal barrier, is critical for host resistance to enteric pathogen infection. Here, we report a novel function of the potentially probiotic Lactococcus garvieae strain LG1 (L. garvieae strain LG1) in maintaining intestinal mucosal barrier integrity and protecting against foodborne Clostridium perfringens (C. perfringens) infection. L. garvieae was isolated from the intestinal contents of Chinese Mongolian sheep (MS) and exhibited potential probiotic properties. In a C. perfringens enterocolitis model, L. garvieae-pretreated mice were less susceptible to C. perfringens infection compared with Phosphate buffered solution (PBS)-pretreated mice, which manifested as higher survival rates, lower pathogen loads, less weight loss, mild clinical symptoms and intestinal damage, and minor inflammation. Further mechanistic analysis showed that L. garvieae could ameliorate the disruption of intestinal permeability and maintain the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier by promoting the expression of tight junction proteins and mucoproteins. Moreover, L. garvieae was also able to facilitate antimicrobial peptide expression and ameliorate dysbiosis of the gut microbiota caused by C. perfringens. Together, these findings highlight the prospect of immunomodulatory potentially probiotic L. garvieae and might offer valuable strategies for prophylaxis and/or treatment of pathogenic C. perfringens mucosal infection. IMPORTANCE: C. perfringens necrotic enteritis leads to losses of about US $2 billion to the poultry industry worldwide every year. Worse, US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has estimated that C. perfringens causes nearly 1 million foodborne illnesses in the United States annually. Nowadays, the treatment recommendation is a combination of a broad-spectrum synergistic penicillin with clindamycin or a carbapenem, despite growing scientific concern over antibiotic resistance. The global understanding of the gut microbiome for C. perfringens infection may provide important insights into the intervention. L. garvieae originated from Mongolian sheep intestine, exhibited potentially probiotic properties, and was able to limit C. perfringens enterocolitis and pathogenic colonization. Importantly, we found that L. garvieae limits C. perfringens invasion via improving intestinal mucosal barrier function. Also, L. garvieae alleviates C. perfringens-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis. It allowed us to convince that utilization of probiotics to promote protective immunity against pathogens infection is of pivotal importance.

OBJECTIVE: There is a dearth of comprehensive research on the stability of the spinal biomechanical structure when combining Oblique Lumbar Interbody Fusion (OLIF) with internal fixation methods. Hence, we have devised this experiment to meticulously examine and analyze the biomechanical changes that arise from combining OLIF surgery with different internal fixation techniques in patients diagnosed with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis. METHODS: Seven validated finite element models were reconstructed based on computed tomography scan images of the L3-L5 segment. These models included the intact model, a stand-alone (S-A) OLIF model, a lateral screw rod (LSR) OLIF model, a bilateral pedicle screw (BPS) OLIF model, an unilateral pedicle screw (UPS) OLIF model, a bilateral CBT (BCBT) OLIF model, and an unilateral CBT(UCBT) OLIF model. The range of motion (ROM), as well as stress levels in the cage, L4 lower endplate, L5 upper endplate, and fixation constructs were assessed across these different model configurations. RESULTS: S-A model had the highest average ROM of six motion modes, followed by LSR, UPS, UCBT, BPS and BCBT. The BCBT model had a relatively lower cage stress than the others. The maximum peak von Mises stress of the fixation constructs was found in the LSR model. The maximum peak von Mises stress of L4 lower endplate was found in the S-A model. The peak von Mises stress on the L4 lower endplate of the rest surgical models showed no significant difference. The maximum peak von Mises stress of the L5 upper endplate was found in the S-A model. The minimum peak von Mises stress of the L5 upper endplate was found in the BCBT model. No significant difference was found for the peak von Mises stress of the L5 upper endplate among LSR, BPS, UPS and UCBT models. CONCLUSION: Among the six different fixation techniques, BCBT exhibited superior biomechanical stability and minimal stress on the cage-endplate interface. It was followed by BPS, UCBT, UPS, and LSR in terms of effectiveness. Conversely, S-A OLIF demonstrated the least stability and resulted in increased stress on both the cage and endplates. Combining OLIF with BCBT fixation technique enhanced biomechanical stability compared to BPS and presented as a less invasive alternative treatment for patients with degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis.

Effectively mitigating photocorrosion is paramount for achieving high-efficiency and sustainable hydrogen production through photocatalytic water splitting over CdS. In this work, we develop a morphology engineering strategy with adjustable Cd-S bond energy through a simple chemical bath deposition method to synthesize novel hollow hemispherical CdS (H-CdS). The morphologic structure CdS can be precisely controlled by adjusting the reaction temperature, time and pH. Compared with common morphologies of CdS, H-CdS, with its reinforced Cd-S bonding, exhibits not only improved photocatalytic hydrogen evolution activity (20.04 mmol/g/h) but also exceptional resistance to photocorrosion, resulting in outstanding cyclic stability even without the aid of cocatalysts or the introduction of other semiconductors. Comprehensive characterizations reveal that the photocorrosion resistance of H-CdS stems from the high Cd-S bond strength. Moreover, in-situ infrared spectroscopy confirms alterations in the properties and activities of the various CdS morphologies after photocatalytic reaction due to photocorrosion. We thoroughly describe the relationship among morphology, surface energy, bond energy and photocorrosion resistance. Our findings present a novel strategy for mitigating the photocorrosion of CdS and offer valuable insights for future research on CdS photocatalysts aimed at stable water splitting.
