Pancreatic pseudocysts arise mostly as a complication of acute or chronic pancreatitis. In this paper we present a case of 44-years-old female suffering from large pancreatic pseudocyst leading to death, as a result of airways suppression.

The purpose of the report was to describe a case of anaphylactic shock in a 22-year-old woman after administration of one tablet of metamizole (pyralginum-Polfa). The patient died, notwithstanding intensive treatment applied rapidly. The patient had been treated for bronchial asthma for a few years. There had been no side effects after repeated administration of metamizole before.

Authors describe 2 patients with hyperkalemic period paralysis where positive therapeutic effect was achieved after treatment with phenytoin. They compare the features of paramyotonia congenital with hyperkalemic period paralysis and they think that they are the same disease with different clinical signs.

The authors analysed the data in 257 cases treated surgically for intracranial aneurysms. In 8 of these cases evidence of damage to the oculomotor nerve was found, as a result of aneurysms of the posterior communicating artery or the internal carotid near the site where the posterior communicating artery branches off. Six patients had oculomotor nerve paralysis and two had only partial involvement of the nerve. In 4 cases the aneurysm was not ruptured but manifested itself as headache followed by oculomotor damage. The authors stress the necessity of carrying out arteriography in each not clear case of oculomotor damage.

The authors describe a 43-year-old man with ophthalmoplegia, ataxia and areflexia and with 0.42 g/l of protein in the cerebrospinal fluid. EMG disclosed some slowing down of the conduction velocity in the motor fibres of the extremities. Treatment with synacthen depot, cocarboxylase and vitamins gave a good effect. The described case corresponds closely to Fisher's syndrome and may be a special form of brain-stem encephalitis involving the mesencephalon.

The authors carried out 66 myeloscintigraphies in 66 patients suspected of having compressing lesions of the spinal cord. In 32 cases the obtained results agreed with the results of contrast myelography which was carried out in 38 patients, and in 22 cases these results were confirmed by operations. In the remaining cases contrast myelography was abandoned in view of unequivocal results of myeloscintigraphy and conservative treatment was started. On the basis of a comparative analysis the authors stated that myeloscintigraphy is safer than contrast myelography, less troublesome for the patient and eliminates the risk connected with contrast medium remaining in the subarachnoideal space. There are practically no contraindications to its use even in outpatients, and it could even be used for screening patients with suspected spinal cord compression. Myeloscintigraphy makes possible the diagnosis of spinal tumours, arachnoideal adhesions and meningocele. In cases of nucleus pulposus prolapse the method is less reliable and less useful. For determination of the character of the pathological lesion and its relation to the spinal cord, and also in cases with doubtful results of myeloscintigraphy contrast myelography should be done.

The frequency of prototrophic recombinants produced by mitotic gene conversion at the trp5 and ade2 loci were observed using the plate test. The yeast cells were exposed in the concentration gradient of ethyl methanesulphonate--EMS (10 microliter/plate). Selective media with addition of a small amount of tryptophan (for the selection of the convertants trp+) or adenine (for the selection of the convertants ade+) were used. The use of medium with addition of tryptophan or adenine considerably increased the sensitivity of the plate method as compared with the use of the medium deficient in either tryptophan or adenine. The above results suggest possible usefulness of testing for mutagenic activity various chemical using growing cells of yeast.
