RESUMEN

The influence of internal and external parasites on the health of Polish konik horses housed in different types of management strategies in Poland is discussed. This study includes consolidated data of different authors from the past 50 years, supplemented by results of more recent research. A total of 38 species of helminths (i.e., 37 Nematoda and one Cestoda) and five Diptera species were recorded from the horses. Protozoan parasites, Cryptosporidium spp. and Theileria equi, and the Rickettsiales, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, were observed for the first time in Poland.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we present a culture of A549 and MRC-5 spheroids in a microfluidic system. The aim of our work was to develop a good lung cancer model for the evaluation of drug cytotoxicity. Our research was focused on determining the progress of cell aggregation depending on such factors as the depth of culture microwells in the microdevices, a different flow rate of the introduced cell suspensions, and the addition of collagen to cell suspensions. We showed that these factors had a significant influence on spheroid formation. It was found that both MRC-5 and A549 cells exhibited higher aggregation in 500 µm microwells. We also noticed that collagen needs to be added to A549 cells to form the spheroids. Optimizing the mentioned parameters allowed us to form 3D lung tissue models in the microfluidic system during the 10-day culture. This study indicates how important an appropriate selection of the specified parameters is (e.g., geometry of the microwells in the microsystem) to obtain the spheroids characterized by high viability in the microfluidic system.

This study aimed at determining relationships between the age of the Wielkopolski horses, ATP in whole blood and in the erythrocytes, and between erythrocyte Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity, and serum concentrations of mineral components. ATP was measured in whole blood and in erythrocytes by HPLC method. Serum concentrations of Ca2+ and Mg2+ were measured spectrophotometrically, while Na+ and K+ by flame photometry. In horses aged from 4 to 48 months, a dynamic decrease in ATP activity was found. Erythrocyte Na+, K(+)-ATPase activity decreased proportionally with the decrease in ATP activity. The results of this study may enable planning physical effort of horses at optimum use of energetic efficiency of their erythrocytes and mineral components in relation to their age.

RESUMEN

Activities of nitrite and nitrate reductases as well as the efficiencies of denitrification carried out by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Pseudomonas stutzeri under different culture conditions have been compared. The inoculum growth conditions had no influence on denitrification pathway in either strain. Activities of both reductases were higher in Pseudomonas stutzeri than in Pseudomonas aeruginosa cultures.
