RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: To investigate differences between regions, a whole year's serum cholesterol results (304,156 data points) from 14 distant Polish laboratories (4,311 - 67,167 results) were used. The JEG, an original statistical method (http://ibib.waw.pl/JEGen.html) gives three levels of the Gaussian part of any analyzed dataset (Gaussian Reference Intervals, GRIs): low (GRImin), modal or middle (GRIopt), and high (GRImax). The quality was proven with reproducibility of 52 groups of week's sample collections in any laboratory; CV% was a mean of 5.73 and not worse than 8.29. The same groups were used to state the variation profiles for all three levels. The modal (GRIopt) serum cholesterol values were 4.73-5.72 mMol/L for women and 4.55-5.508 mMol/L for men. Sex and age dependency of the results were analyzed on 36-38 sets of 5-year age classes and showed, that there were more female results in childhood and in the older age classes, but in the youth age classes males dominated. The annual seasonal variation profile curves appeared as very variable, from M-letter forms through flat ones to W-letter forms. The shape of the variation curve was not stable in any particular laboratory and could vary from year to year to the opposite form. All results demonstrate the variability of cholesterol level in any analyzed subpopulation.

RESUMEN

Doctors in Warsaw region claimed that the results of fT4 and TSH examinations originating from different laboratories are incomparable. Therefore the Gaussian Reference Ranges (GRR) of archival sets of data from 6 laboratories (together 18793 fT4 and 44851 TSH results) were calculated separately with JEG method. The upper and lover ranges were compared with data from 11 bibliographical sources. It was found that in the investigated population the both averaged ranges (high and low) of GRR of fT4 are statistical significant lover then the reference data. In the same time the averaged upper range of GRR of TSH was higher than the averaged data from the literature. Based on statistic analysis of these results it could be estimated that about 20% of the investigated population show evident and about 50% show moderate signs of hypothyreosis.

RESUMEN

UNLABELLED: Early diagnosis can improve clinical effects of ovarian carcinoma treatment. Until now, a satisfying screening method has not been found. Serum lipid and lipoprotein association with neoplasm is already established. In our study, we have examined concentration of total cholesterol, free cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, HDL3 and HDL free cholesterol fraction, triglycerides, and apolipoproteins: AI, AII and B and aimed to prepare the most likely model of lipid profile in women suffering from ovarian neoplasm. The serum lipid parameters were analysed in 91 operated patients: 64 with ovarian malignant tumour, 27 with benign ovarian cysts and 44 apparently healthy age-matching pair women as a control group. THE RESULTS: concentration of two parameters: apolipoprotein AI and free cholesterol allows for excluding ovarian neoplasm in 95.5%; examination of six parameters: apolipoprotein AI, free cholesterol, HDL-free cholesterol, HDL total cholesterol, apolipoprotein B and HDL3 fraction allows for diagnosing ovarian malignancy with 97% probability. This probability does not depend on staging of cancer, patient's age, nor BMI. No statistically significant difference between malignant and benign ovarian tumour has been confirmed.

RESUMEN

The double laser beam diffraction of spherized RBC used in the ADVIA 120 haematological analyser allows quantitation of cells aberrant not only by their volume but also by their haemoglobin concentration. The present investigation provides arguments for the identification of hyperchromic RBC as spherocytes, mainly the close relation between % hyperchromic cells and % lysed by the cryohaemolysis test. The percentage of hyperchromic erythrocytes may no longer be considered an instrumental artefact. Without allowing a definite diagnosis of hereditary spherocytosis, an increased percentage of hyperchromic cells indicates the degree of spherocytosis, making it an excellent automated and cost-free screening parameter for inherited and acquired corpuscular haemolysis.
