RESUMEN

The increasing urge to make an impactful contribution towards attaining nutritional security amidst the ever-rising demand for food, changing climate and maintaining environmental health and safety has become the main focal point for today's researchers globally. Slow-release fertilizers (SRFs) are a broad, dynamic, and advance category of fertilizers but despite its environmental benefits and scientifically proven results it often faces some critical challenges, primarily due to its high cost, often stemming from synthetic coatings, deteriorating soil health and with unrevealed potential environmental impacts. Organo-monomers have gained immense popularity due to their organic origin, biodegradable nature, biocompatibility, bio-sustainability and as a targeted delivery of nutrients in the plant system leading to increase in nutrient use efficiency (NUE). They can form strong bond with other monomers, fertilizers elements and improve the soil quality, carbon sequestration and holistically the environment. This review emphasizes on organo-monomers based SRFs, its synthesis, application and deliberate mechanism of nutrient release; boosting crop productivity and global economy. In conclusion, provided the significant challenges posed by the classical or synthetically coated fertilizers; the application of organo-monomers based SRFs demonstrates immense potential for achieving sustainable yield, to help build a global nutritionally secure population.

RESUMEN

Parkinson's disease (PD) is caused due to degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) which leads to the depletion of dopamine in the body. The lack of dopamine is mainly due to aggregation of misfolded α-synuclein which causes motor impairment in PD. Dopamine is also required for normal retinal function and the light-dark vision cycle. Misfolded α-synuclein present in inner retinal layers causes vision-associated problems in PD patients. Hence, individuals with PD also experience structural and functional changes in the retina. Mutation in LRRK2, PARK2, PARK7, PINK1, or SNCA genes and mitochondria dysfunction also play a role in the pathophysiology of PD. In this review, we discussed the different etiologies which lead to PD and future prospects of employing non-invasive techniques and retinal changes to diagnose the onset of PD earlier.

RESUMEN

Burnout is a recognized risk factor for poor organizational commitment across occupational groups. This has not been explored among Sri Lankan prison officers previously. The aim of this article is to identify whether burnout was an associated risk factor for poor organizational commitment in this occupational group. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 1803 prison correctional and rehabilitation officers in 32 prison institutions across the country. Multistage sampling was used. The "Organizational Commitments Questionnaire" was used following judgmental validation. Risk factors identified through literature were analyzed using bivariate analysis, followed by logistic regression analysis. Three-hundred and sixty-six participants (20.3%) had poor organizational commitment. Burnout was found significant in the bivariate analysis, and in the logistic regression analysis at P < 0.001 (odds ratio: 2.2, 95% confidence interval: 1.7-2.8). Burnout was an associated risk factor for poor organizational commitment in Sri Lankan prison officers. Interventions for employee burnout would contribute to improved organizational commitment.

RESUMEN

A total of 26 nasal swab samples were collected from dogs with gastroenteritis and respiratory tract infections in and around Chennai, India during 2019-20. All the samples were subjected to PCR using common primers for rapid diagnosis and differentiation of CAV1 and CAV2. Only one sample produced an amplicon of 1030 bp indicating the presence of CAV2 which was confirmed by further sequencing. The analysis of the sequence revealed 100 per cent identity with other CAV type 2 isolates from Brazilian, Canadian and USA strains and 95.9 per cent identity with other Indian CAV2 strains. The phylogenetic analysis of E3 gene reveal two distinct clusters (Asian and America-Europe subgroup) in which our strain (ABT/MVC/CAV2/001) grouped with CAV2 of America-Europe subgroup instead of Asian continent subgroup. This study confirms a novel CAV2 strain using molecular techniques which are genetically distinct in nature from other Indian CAV2 strains that is currently circulating in India.

RESUMEN

Breast cancer is one of the leading killers among women the world over. Widespread mammographic screening programs have led to almost 20% of breast cancers being detected when they are radiologically visible but clinically impalpable. For the localization of these cancers before surgical excision, the Kopan hook wire is the standard technique, but the extent of margins excised still needs to be determined. In this study, we have evaluated the accuracy of specimen mammogram (SM) with digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) for margin assessment by comparing it to the excised margins as measured in final histopathology. This is a prospective observational study of patients with radiologically suspicious impalpable breast lesions. The patients underwent ultrasound-guided hook wire placement followed by excision of the lesion, subjected to digital tomosynthesis mammogram, and margins were revised on table when indicated. These findings were correlated with final histopathological margin. Our study included 30 patients and out of the 6 lesions, which showed positive margins on specimen mammography, 4 were histologically confirmed to have tumour at the surgical margin and 2 were confirmed to be tumour free. All DBT-positive margins were re-excised at the time of primary surgery. Individual comparison of the margins revealed a good agreement and high level of correlation between DBT and histopathology margins. None of the cases required a second surgery for margin revision. It can be concluded that specimen mammogram with DBT can be used as a reliable tool for intraoperative surgical margin assessment in non-palpable breast lesions to reduce rate of margin revision as well as reduce the volume of breast excised without compromising the oncological safety of the procedure.

RESUMEN

This study evaluates the combined role of axillary ultrasound, fine needle aspiration cytology and sentinel lymph node biopsy in clinically N0 axilla. Between January 2014 and June 2015, 150 women with early breast cancer underwent axillary ultrasound as a first investigation for nodal status. Suspicious nodes were subjected to image guided fine needle aspiration cytology. Non-suspicious and fine needle aspiration cytology negative axillary nodes proceeded to sentinel lymph node biopsy at time of primary breast surgery. All confirmed positive (cytology and frozen) cases proceeded to axillary lymph node dissection. 52 women had positive axillary nodes at final histology. Axillary ultrasound with fine needle aspiration cytology identified 27 patients with positive axillary nodal status and had a sensitivity of 84.36 % (27/32) and specificity of 87.5 % (14/16). Intraoperative frozen analysis identified a further 13 cases with sensitivity of 56.52 % (13/23) and specificity of 97.56 % (80/82). Overall 76.92 % (40/52) patients with positive axillary metastasis were identified peri-operatively using combination of axillary ultrasound, cytology and sentinel lymph node biopsy.

RESUMEN

Oxyfluorfen, a diphenyl-ether herbicide is being used to control annual and perennial broad-leaved weeds and sedges in a variety of field crops including onion. The present study was aimed to investigate the dynamics and field persistence of oxyfluorfen in onion plant, bulb and soil under Indian tropical conditions. Application of four rates of oxyfluorfen viz., 200, 250, 300 and 400 g AI ha(-1) as pre-emergence gave good weed control in field experiment with onion. The oxyfluorfen residue dissipated faster in plant than in soil respectively, with a mean half-life of 6.1 and 11.2 days. Dissipation followed first-order kinetics. In laboratory column leaching experiments, 17 percent of the applied oxyfluorfen was recovered from the soil and indicates its solubility in water and mobility in sandy clay loam soil was low. A sorption study revealed that the adsorption of oxyfluorfen to the soil was highly influenced by the soil organic carbon with the Koc value of 5450. The study concludes that the dissipation of oxyfluorfen in soil and onion was dependent on the physico-chemical properties of the soil and environmental conditions.

RESUMEN

Bioaccumulation of herbicides in plant produce may cause ailing effect on animals and human beings through food chain contamination. Thus oblige the investigation of newer herbicide metamitron for its persistence and degradation in sugar beet crop and soil. Metamitron persist in plant up to 15 days while up to 30 days in soil. Its dissipation followed first order reaction kinetics. On day 90, metamitron was detected in the soil at 7.0 kg a.i. ha(-1) treated plot only. It would be concluded that metamitron at 3.5 kg a.i. ha(-1) can be safely applied to the sugar beet crop for weed control.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Thoracic electrical bioimpedance (TEB) for measuring cardiac output (CO) is being explored increasingly as an alternative to pulmonary artery catheter. The major advantage of this technology is that it is non-invasive and easy to perform. Several studies have compared it to thermodilution cardiac output using PA catheter, with variable correlation. Multigated radionuclide equilibrium cardiography (RNEC) method of cardiac output measurement is known to be reliable. OBJECTIVE: To compare cardiac output measured by thoracic electrical bioimpdenace with that measured by multigated radionuclide equilibrium cardiography. PATIENTS AND METHODS: CO studies were performed sequentially at a single sitting by TEB and RNEC methods among patients with cardiac symptoms referred for radionuclide study as part of their evaluation. TEB CO was measured by placing two pairs of electrodes on either side of neck and two other pairs on either side of the lower chest. Stroke volume was estimated from the sequential changes in transthoracic electrical bioimpedance induced by rhythmic aortic blood flow, using Kubicek equation. RNEC-CO was measured by intravenous injection of radio-active Technitium-tagged RBCs followed by ECG gated blood pool imaging over the chest (MUGA study). Bland-Altman analysis was used to compare the measurements. RESULTS: A total of 32 subjects with proven or suspected ischemic heart disease, but without overt cardiac failure, edema or arrhythmias were studied (M:F::26:6; mean age: 48 +/- 12 years). The mean TEB-CO was 3.54 +/- 1.052 l/min and mean RNEC-CO was 3.907 +/- 0.952 l/min. Correlation coefficient (r) for these measurements was 0.67 (p < 0.01), with bias: -0.421 l/min; precision: 1.557 l/min; and percentage error of measurement: 42.35%. CONCLUSIONS: This study observed a moderate correlation between TEB and RNEC methods of CO measurement. Further studies are indicated to explore the relative utility of TEB in comparison with RNEC as well as other methods of CO measurement before considering its use in patients with ischemic heart disease.

RESUMEN

PIP: This study examines the effect of liberalizing abortion on the number of septic abortions and complications. 72 women with postabortal sepsis (up to 20 weeks of gestation) admitted at the K.E.M. Hospital in Bombay comprised the study group. A detailed medical history was obtained and a thorough clinical examination conducted. 29.16% of the patients were unmarried and 41.66% were primigavidas. Dilatation and curettage were performed in 36 cases; colpotomy in 8; and laparotomy in 3. Maternal mortality rate was 11.11% and septic shock was the cause of maternal deaths in 75% of the cases. Of the 8 women who died, 6 had a history of criminal interference, suggesting that there are still women who avail of abortion services outside the hospitals and peripheral centers. Medical termination of pregnancy should not be taken lightly as it is not without complications. The incidence of sepsis and its sequelae would be reduced if adequate asepsis and proper selection of cases, and control of vaginal infection before performing abortion, are observed.^ieng
