RESUMEN

Cysticercosis is a recognized fatal disease to the humans. Taenia solium, a larval stage of pork tapeworm that causes cysticercosis which is an important cause of morbidity in the world. This case report shows the clinical presentations of an atypical case of cutaneous cysticercosis on the right buccal mucosa and its management. It presents the importance of thorough knowledge, proper investigation, symptomatic management with improved treatment regimens and important role of minimally invasive surgery. Its outcome and the treatment options mainly depend on the number, location, size and stage of parasites, as well as on the immune response of the host.

CONTEXT: Temperature rise on external root surface has a deleterious effect on the periodontium. AIMS: To compare and evaluate the temperature changes on the external root surfaces using three different heated gutta-percha obturation techniques and also to evaluate the effect of remaining dentin thickness (RDT) on the temperature rise during obturation. SETTINGS AND DESIGN: In vitro study with a customized temperature measurement setup. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty decoronated human maxillary central incisors were cleaned and shaped using standardized method. RDT was measured using cone beam computed tomography. They were divided into three groups of 10 samples each. Group 1 was obturated by traditional warm vertical compaction, Group 2 using solid core obturation, and Group 3 by warm vertical compaction technique using GP heater in vibration mode. AH Plus sealer was used as cement sealer. During obturation, the temperature rise was measured using K-type thermocouples in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. The highest temperature rise during the procedure was recorded. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Data were analyzed by one-way analysis of variance and post hoc Tukey's test. RESULTS: Traditional warm vertical compaction had the highest temperature change followed by warm vertical compaction using GP heater in vibration mode and solid core obturation. CONCLUSION: There was a temperature rise on external root surfaces in the three techniques evaluated. Solid core obturation technique showed the least temperature change. There was no significance in the effect of RDT on temperature rise during obturation.

Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the degree of conversion (DC%), shear bond strength (SBS), bond durability, and the resin-dentin interface of polydopamine (PDA) incorporated total-etch adhesive system. Materials and Methods: Five percentage by weight (wt%) concentration of PDA incorporated adhesive was prepared and its polymerization was evaluated using Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results were compared with the DC% of conventional total-etch adhesive (Adper Single Bond 2) using independent t-test. Occlusal surfaces of 80 freshly extracted human premolars were sectioned to expose the dentin, which was acid-etched. The samples were divided into two groups (n=40) of total-etch adhesive and total-etch adhesive+PDA. Composite resin blocks were built up over the bonded surface and cured. Each group was subdivided into two subgroups (n=20) of immediate and post-aging evaluation. Samples were immersed in 10% sodium hypochlorite for five hours, and then, the SBS was evaluated using a universal testing machine at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. The resin-dentin interface was evaluated using confocal laser scanning microscopy. Data were analyzed using two-way analysis of variance and post-hoc Bonferroni test. Results: DC% was not affected by the addition of 5% PDA to the adhesive (group 2). The SBS of group 2A was significantly higher than that of group 1A. There was no significant reduction of SBS in group 2B. The hybrid layer was less degraded after aging in group 2B compared to group 2A. Conclusion: PDA incorporated adhesive increased the immediate bond strength and durability without changing the DC%.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the color change in teeth bleached with two different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide, containing sweet potato extract as an additive, using a spectrophotometer, and to evaluate the surface changes in enamel using a scanning electron microscope (SEM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Baseline color values of 24 artificially stained incisors were obtained using a spectrophotometer. The specimens were divided into two groups of 12 teeth, each based on the concentration of hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) as follows: Group I - 35% H(2)O(2) and Group II - 10% H(2)O(2). One-half of the tooth was bleached with H(2)O(2) alone (Subgroup A) and the other half was bleached with a combination of H(2)O(2) and sweet potato extract (Subgroup B). Post bleaching the Commission Internationale de l' Eclairage L(*), a(*), b(*) (CIEL(*)a(*)b(*)) values were obtained and ΔE was calculated. The surfaces of the samples were examined using SEM. RESULTS: The mean ΔE values of groups IB (72.52 ± 2.03) and IIB (71.50 ± 1.81) were significantly higher than those of groups IA (65.24 ± 1.02) and IIA (64.19 ± 1.88), respectively, (P < 0.05). The SEM images of groups IB and IIB showed lesser surface irregularities and morphological alterations in enamel. CONCLUSION: The addition of sweet potato extract to hydrogen peroxide not only resulted in the restoration of the natural tooth color, but also decreased the effects of bleaching on the enamel morphology, compared to the use of hydrogen peroxide alone.
