RESUMEN

Background: In total, 14 species of Caligus have been reported from Malaysia. Amongst them, four species are reported from lutjanid fishes. New information: Caligusdussumieri Rangnekar, 1957 is reported from Malabar snapper, Lutjanusmalabaricus, purchased from a local wet market in Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia. This is the first record of this species in Malaysia and it is only the second species assigned to the bonito-group of the genus Caligus to be reported from Malaysia. A key to species of the bonito-group is presented herein. The list of caligids infecting lutjanid fishes and the geographical distributions plus the known hosts of members of the bonito-group of Caligus are discussed.

A new monogenean species, Kannaphallus leptosomus n. sp., from the gills of the diamond trevally, Scyris indica Rüppell, caught off Terengganu, Peninsular Malaysia is described with molecular data. The new species differs from other species of the genus by the morphology of the largest clamp, the presence of a penis gun-associated needle, the unarmed genital atrium size, and the presence of two independent vaginal tubes. Previous records of Kannaphallus species were compiled, and four nominal species including one species incertae sedis (K. virilis Unnithan, 1957; K. lateriporis Mamaev, 1988; K. leptosomus n. sp.; and K. mochimae Fuentes Zambrano, 1998 incertae sedis) and two undescribed species recorded as invalid names were listed. Cemocotylelloides carangis Ramalingam, 1969 was considered a junior objective synonym of K. univaginalis Ramalingam, 1960; this species was treated as Cemocotylelloides univaginalis n. comb. In addition, Unnithan's materials including type specimens of K. virilis could not be found in specimen repositories in India, and it appears that the specimens were probably not deposited in any institution or have been subsequently lost. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 28S rDNA sequences, Heteraxinidae was broadly divided into two clades, and Heteraxininae and Cemocotylinae were shown as polyphyletic groups, respectively.

Both sexes of Brachiella malayensis n. sp. are described on the basis of specimens found in the nostrils of narrow-barred Spanish mackerel Scomberomorus commerson (Lacepède) collected off Besut, Malaysia. The female of this species closely resembles those of B. magna Kabata, 1968 and B. cybii Pillai, Prabha et Balaraman, 1982 but is distinguishable mainly by the body size and the proportions of the cephalosome, posterior processes and caudal rami. While examining the male, we noticed a systematic inconsistency in some lernaeopodid genera. The genus Brachiella Cuvier, 1830, represented by its type-species Brachiella thynni Cuvier, 1830, and two monotypic genera Charopinopsis Yamaguti, 1963 and Eobrachiella Ho et Do, 1984, represented by Charopinopsis quaternia (Wilson, 1935) and Eobrachiella elegans (Richiardi, 1880), respectively, share distinct synapomorphies in the embracing (vs. pinching) elongate male maxilliped and the female trunk with a pair of long, cylindrical ventroposterior processes (in addition to a pair of modified caudal rami), both of which are involved in their unique reproductive strategy. The latter two genera are herewith relegated to junior synonyms of Brachiella.


TITLE: Une nouvelle espèce de Brachiella (Copepoda, Siphonostomatoida, Lernaeopodidae) de Malaisie péninsulaire, avec relégation des deux genres Charopinopsis et Eobrachiella en synonymes juniors de Brachiella. ABSTRACT: Les deux sexes de Brachiella malayensis n. sp. sont décrits sur la base de spécimens trouvés dans les narines du Thazard rayé Scomberomorus commerson (Lacepède) collecté au large de Besut, en Malaisie. La femelle de cette espèce ressemble étroitement à celles de B. magna Kabata, 1968 et B. cybii Pillai, Prabha et Balaraman, 1982, mais se distingue principalement par la taille du corps et les proportions du céphalosome, les processus postérieurs et les rami caudaux. En examinant le mâle, nous avons remarqué une incohérence systématique dans certains genres de Lernaeopodidae. Le genre Brachiella Cuvier, 1830, représenté par son espèce-type Brachiella thynni Cuvier, 1830, et deux genres monotypiques Charopinopsis Yamaguti, 1963 et Eobrachiella Ho et Do, 1984, représentés par Charopinopsis quaternia (Wilson, 1935) et Eobrachiella elegans (Richiardi, 1880), respectivement, partagent des synapomorphies distinctes dans le maxillipède allongé (plutôt que pincé) et le tronc féminin avec une paire de longs processus cylindro-ventro-postérieurs (en plus d'une paire de rami caudaux modifiés), tous deux impliqués dans leur stratégie de reproduction unique. Les deux derniers genres sont ici relégués comme synonymes juniors de Brachiella.

The complete life cycle of a pennellid copepod Peniculus minuticaudae Shiino, 1956 is proposed based on the discovery of all post-embryonic stages together with the post-metamorphic adult females infecting the fins of threadsail filefish Stephanolepis cirrhifer (Monacanthidae) cultured in a fish farm at Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The hatching stage was the infective copepodid. The life cycle of P. minuticaudae consists of six stages separated by moults: the copepodid, four chalimi and adult. In this study, the adult males were observed frequently in precopulatory amplexus with various stages of females however, copulation occurs only between adults. Fertilized pre-metamorphic adult females carrying spermatophores may detach from the host and settle again before undergoing massive differential growth into the post-metamorphic adult female. Comparison of the life cycle of P. minuticaudae has been made with three known pennellids: Lernaeocera branchialis (Linnaeus, 1767), Cardiodectes medusaeus (Wilson, 1908) and Lernaeenicus sprattae (Sowerby, 1806). Among the compared species, P. minuticaudae is the first ectoparasitic pennellid to be discovered to complete its life cycle on a single host without any change in infection site preferences between infective copepodid and fertilized pre-metamorphic female.
