RESUMEN

On January 13, 2018, an alert was sent to Hawaii's people that a missile was heading toward them. People were in a state of alarm for 30 minutes before the government sent out a false alarm statement. Fifteen minutes after the message that told the people of Hawaii that they were not in danger went out, Pornhub's views spiked by 48%. On March 11, 2020, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) was designated a pandemic. By March 25, 2020, Pornhub's views had spiked to over 24%. We took the research available on problematic pornography consumption, also referred to as internet sex addiction, pornography addiction, and cybersex addiction, and compared that to the rise of pornography use since the year 2000 and how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted pornography use and the effects it had on sexual and social relations. We also wanted to see if there is any association between pornography consumption and other addictive disorders and cluster B personality traits. There is currently no Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition (DSM-5) diagnosis for pornography addiction. We want to see if the data we gather can aid in identifying whether problematic pornography use has a place alongside other addictive disorders in the DSM-5. We hypothesize that inappropriate pornography consumption has increased since 2000, only to increase further during the pandemic. The null hypothesis, Ho, states there has been no change in the consumption of pornography since the 2000s. The alternative theory, Ha, says that the proportion of people who use pornography has increased over the past 23 years. As for other addictive disorders and cluster B personality traits, we hypothesize the research will show that greater than 50% of people exhibiting problematic pornography consumption will also have an additional addictive disorder and a cluster B personality trait. Our results support our hypothesis that during the COVID-19 pandemic, pornography consumption increased beyond the baseline. The results did not support our prediction of a significant association between other addictive disorders and cluster B personality traits with pornography consumption.

RESUMEN

Evaluating the impact of surgical masks' conservation practices during the Coronavirus Disease pandemic in the bioburden of the operating room seems imperative, as they play a critical role against this pandemic. We demonstrate that surgeons' masks tend to be contaminated due to the conservation techniques to maximize protection equipment during the pandemic. Health institutions should highlight the importance of surgical mask exchange to avoid increments in surgical mask contamination.

RESUMEN

Psilocybin is an emerging potential therapy for the treatment of psychiatric illnesses. Microdosing has been shown to result in an overall improvement in patients with anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and substance abuse. This meta-analysis explores and compiles prior research to make further inferences regarding psilocybin and its use for the treatment of psychiatric illness along with its safety and efficacy. Database searches were conducted to identify peer-reviewed randomized controlled trials and clinical trials mentioning psilocybin use and psychiatric illness. A Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses flow diagram was created and analysis was run on the nine articles that met all established inclusion criteria. An event is defined as a participant who showed improvement, in a quantitative method, from baseline after the use of psilocybin. Another analysis was done using depression severity (Quick Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology 16-Item Self Report, QIDS-SR16) at baseline and after the use of psilocybin. Analyses of the original data and the nine articles showed a great deal of heterogeneity with an I2 value of 73.68%, suggesting that the studies in this meta-analysis cannot be considered to be studies of the same population. The Q value of 30.4 was higher than 15.507, which is the critical value for eight degrees of freedom found in a chi-square distribution. This Q value showed a high degree of variation and lacked significance. The second meta-run on QIDS-SR16 scores from three studies showed a Q value of 1.16 which was lower than 5.991, the critical value for two degrees of freedom found in a chi-square distribution. The I2 statistic for this second meta-analysis was -73% which can be equated to zero. This indicated that the data were homogeneous or that there was no observed heterogeneity. Due to low heterogeneity, the fixed-effects model was used. Based on this meta-analysis, psilocybin seems to show symptom improvement in some psychiatric illnesses. The effectiveness of psilocybin microdosing and the use of psilocybin, in general, need to be studied further to determine the efficacy and safety of potential applications in psychiatry.

RESUMEN

Traumatic brain injuries are often associated with a broad range of neuropsychiatric sequelae, for which no straightforward treatment approach is established. Historically, the treatment of traumatic brain injuries has been tailored towards the symptoms presented by the patient. In this paper, we present the case of a 42-year-old male with a past medical history significant for retinitis pigmentosa who suffered a traumatic brain injury and subsequently developed visual hallucinations consistent with Charles Bonnet syndrome.

RESUMEN

The lifelong prevalence of bipolar disorder in adults, including subsyndromal forms, has increased over the years in the United States. By contrast, neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease have demonstrated an age-related rise in prevalence. As the global population manages to live longer thanks to sociomedical developments, it is expected to observe a rise in the occurrence of comorbid neuropsychiatric disorders. Herein, we present the case and management regimen of a 51-year-old female patient with multiple comorbidities and in the presence of polypharmacy. She was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and bipolar disorder type I alongside multiple comorbidities; her polypharmacy and medical history presented a significant clinical challenge in managing her condition. This case report focuses on the pharmacologic management of neuropsychiatric disorders titrated to this patient's particular needs, which were complicated by psychosis and comorbidities.

RESUMEN

The ability to culture different cell types is essential for answering many questions in developmental and regenerative biology. Studies in marine organisms, in particular echinoderms, have been limited by the lack of well-described cellular culture systems. Here we describe a cell culture system, for normal or regenerating holothurian cells, that allows cell characterization by immunohistochemistry and scanning electron microscopy. These cell cultures can now be used to perform multiple types of experiments in order to explore the cellular, biochemical, and genomic aspects of echinoderm regenerative properties.

RESUMEN

When provided with an emergency blood gas or electrolyte readout, clinicians must identify the critical parameters that require immediate intervention. This article provides concepts in oxygenation and electrolyte evaluation to help fine-tune the initial treatment and monitoring orders for emergency patients.

RESUMEN

Blood gas analysis is frequently requested as part of the point-of-care testing for emergency or critical care patients presenting with metabolic or respiratory abnormalities. With the advent of portable units, information regarding a patient's acid-base, ventilation, and oxygenation status can be rapidly obtained. This article provides essential information on arterial and venous blood gas analysis with the goal of helping clinicians integrate such data in their case management.
